a second printing of @shireness-says masterwork a fate woven in thread and ink. a little quarto this time, otherwise identical to the design elements in the typeset i made for dev with artwork by @eirabach. since i had a smaller cover i went with this traced and painted design (never again)--a particularly creepy rendition of The Lovers, a major arcana tarot card.

If you've been following me for a while you'll know I'm soon going to be releasing The Perilous Pear & Plum Pies of Pudwick, a 52 page full-colour, fully illustrated adventure for Melsonia where a group of plucky adventurers will shrink to insectoid size and adventure into the uncanny world that exists inside a sapient pear tree in a system agnostic weird fantasy bugcrawl.

If that interests you, you should absolutely check out Beetle Knight, which I hope to run TPPAPPOP with when I get my grubby palps on it!

Beetle Knight has got a cool contested rolls system, an emblems mechanic reminiscent of the medals in Bug Fables or charms in Hollow Knight, and it comes from a team embedded in the OSR/NSR design trajectory.

I'm not involved with Beetle Knight, but if luck is on our side both projects will release the same day Silksong comes out! If it sounds like your kind of game (and you know it is if you're following me) go check out the kickstarter page!

Monkey Man (Dir. Dev Patel)

I want to say ‘I’m speechless’, but that’s such a lie, I have so much to say.

This is truly one of the best films I have seen in a long time. It hit so many notes, so perfectly. It was captivating the entire way through, it had subtle nods (I believe) to Shantaram and John Wick. The film pulled forward very real challenges that exist in India, and held up a mirror to the savage disparity between the ruling class criminals in India and the every day man, to the corruption, sex trafficking, poverty, violence against minorities and politicians who are running the country into the ground. It went somewhere that Indian cinema doesn’t have the balls to go and it did it masterfully.

Ugh, this film was just so fucking good. And that’s to say nothing yet of the acting, which was absolutely phenomenal.

Dev Patel had murder in his eyes in the best way, and I’ve never genuinely rooted for such graphic murder in a film before, but his acting/directing/writing had me holding my breath for his character to destroy his enemies.

My absolute favourite scene though, was far more tame - with the Zakir Hussain. I still can’t quite believe it happened, it was the perfect addition to an already wonderful film.

I went into this movie blind - I did not see a second of a trailer or read a single thing online, and I’m so glad, because my jaw was on the floor from how impressed I was.

Dev Patel is a talent and I’m now going to spend the next month or so going back through all of his work. I know there’s more to come from this brilliant, brilliant mind, but in the years to come people will point to this film as a career standout for him. What better way to make a directorial debut.

It was captivating the entire way through, and just so fucking good.

Please go watch it if you can.

Tag Game: Rec Your Own Fics

Well first, I want to say I’m very proud of my three heaviest hitters—The Return, Nature and Nurture, and If The Sky Comes Falling Down (For You)—because they were hard to write and people ended up really loving them. Including me, I’m people! They are my three most popular fics for good reason. but outside of those obvious ones, here are a few more:

The End of Infinity (With You)

Why: This truly is a gift from me for me. I wrecked my own shop with this one. I love everything about it, from the non-sequential timeline to the world-building to the angsty affection. Hnngh.

Breathing

Why: I got to steal a scene from my favorite book of all time, give a nod to its predecessor, and write a really good Jason. Why wouldn’t I love it?

White Lighters / Afterglow

Why: May have made myself gut-sob with this one. I regret nothing. Because I took you all down with me.

Bang

Why: Maybe this is turning into the “I wreck readers’ shops with Jason Todd” but I don’t care, I did a good job. (How did this even happen? I feel like I’m known more for Tim??)

Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien

Why: It’s just a hecking weird little thing. Also it was my revenge on @audreycritter​ for sending me a gifset of Tenet with the note “They’re like an AU Bruce and Clark!”

Bloody Brilliant

Why: It was my first time borrowing the light of my life, and I was pleased that I didn’t horribly screw up.

the story: A Fate Woven in Thread and Ink by @shireness-says, written for the Captain Swan Supernatural Summer @cssns in 2021 and finished earlier this summer. AU inspired by The Night Circus.

the art: by @eirabach, a true gift and friend. two of her pieces are spotlighted on the covers and each chapter has an art piece designed for it specifically. covered in lustre 220gsm cardstock. tarot images composited by me from stock at iStock. the rings and charm are inspired by scenes from the story.

the book: sewn boards sewn with orange DMC floss in a french link. tissue endpapers crinkled to look like flames (oh, the pain i went through pasting these endpapers. do not ever ask me how many times i had to re-paste them). printed on the church paper bookbinder's special. printed and bound for Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day 2023 (lovingly)

We suspect the animal kingdom of plotting a revolution and you are here to help us understand their devices.

Our mission in the Observancy Department is to spot any such behaviour or signs of suspicious activity, note them down, and draw our conclusions.

1928 – Giants

From the landscape sprung the flowers, but who formed the landscape? Newly uncovered texts indicate the folklore might be true and giants may have indeed roamed and shaped the earth.

Our mission is to lower our gaze to the ground to identify oddly shaped mounds, mimetoliths (rocks resembling faces), gouged earth, and suspicious urban planning decisions. Under the hills there may be sleeping colossus.

I wanted to shine a light on this project because I met Luke at Dragonmeet in December '23 and fell in love with the way he thinks about RPGs, graphic design and play/ritual/thinking-the-world in his games!

I can't recommend this project enough and I've been waiting excitedly to support it and see it succeed! It really represents everything I think is special about RPGs and the things I also want to explore in this design space *and art movement* and if you have any interest in TTRPGs beyond the scope of dungeon games, Luke is making some of the freshest and most evocative design you can find in the entire medium.

Everything you see here is directly from the kickstarter. Go back it! I promise you'll be glad you did, there are few more unique and inspiring things you could spend your money on in TTRPGs right now!
