I remember seeing a video of a woman so mad that her male gyn didn't tell her the risks of long term depo shots for birth control and menstruation control. I wanted to reply to it but Tumblr did that thing where you suddenly scroll up and lose the post. But as someone who has taken depo for a decade and not had a period, yes, you can.
I mentioned this to my obgyn and she said yeah, it's so frustrating how many women are told or believe that you can't take depo long term. The biggest risk of depo is bone loss, this can be counteracted by supplements.
It's one of those things where the male obgyn (never go see a male obgyn please for the love of God) wasn't as informative as he should be, but that didn't mean she had to stop. It's a risk assessment between you and you doctor.
For me the risk is simple, I have PMDD so bad that I got premenstrual suicidal ideation. Since the risk of suicide is worse than bone loss, I continue to take depo. Now that I have become more disabled than I was ten years ago, I have even more reason to stay on it. My disabilities are hell enough, not having a period too makes it a little easier to deal.
Don't let people scare you off a birth control that takes away your periods, especially when they're heavier and painful than average. I wonder if that fact is why people shit talk depo so much. I'll never forget a coworker saying it wasn't clean to not have a period. (Of course the irony being some consider periods themselves dirty) You don't have to clean out uterine lining if you never built it up in the first place. Also wouldn't that make young girls as well old women and some trans people dirty too? People don't think these things through.

Ok one thing I haven't seen anyone talk about regarding the Depo shot:
The way I smell changed. Not my nose or anything, but my body odor completely changed and it's freaking not only me out, but also my mother. The number one thing everyone warned me about was that I was likely to gain weight because I'd be really hungry all the time and I was like 'ok cool, that's fine with me'. But if I'd known my mom and cousins would stop hugging me because I don't smell like myself? If I'd known my underarm odor would be 10x worse? I might have had second thoughts
Like, don't get me wrong, I'm still 100% glad I did it because spending three weeks out of every month dealing with cramps and hormones and cravings and headaches fucking sucks, but damn I did not see that coming.

Do any of my followers/mutuals have experience with the Depo birth control shot?
I was told that it would increase my appetite dramatically but I've noticed an actual dramatic drop in my appetite. Like, to the point I forget to eat. Last night I pulled out the leftovers I had from lunch with my girls and sat the container next to me then totally forgot it was there for, like, an hour? Only remembered it was there when Sparta wormed his way across my lap to sniff at it.
I mean, I'm ok with this, I NEED to loose weight. But its just so different from everything I'm reading online.

Had surgery on my arm a week ago to get rid of my implant and had depo shot same day. Suffering endlessly, no medicine to help the pain from surgery or my arthritis.. Been busy taking care of my cat who is not well during this time of recovering from surgery. All my partner could say tonight is that “I’ve been negative lately”. It’s like geez I wonder why. Found out this past month I’m horribly horribly gluten intolerant (nearly had to go to hospital because I was becoming severely weak and sick) and they have been eating and drinking gluten stuff and on multiple occasions I have been contaminated by them doing this and have been wildly sick and have to fast for 24 hours every time I get an attack. Like they know I’ve lost 40 pounds from being ill from gluten since March. I know depo messed my mood up badly before - but like can’t they understand why I’m suffering and upset and sad and bit negative ????

Hey, since I don't believe I've ever made a post about this that actually uses tags for the sake of discoverability --
My name is Billie and I'm on Lupron!! I also used to be on Depo!!
Since 2017, I've been experiencing chronic pain of my uterus and ovaries, which so far does not have a confirmed cause, but my gynecologist and I think it's likely endometriosis
I started Depo-Provera (injectable progesterone) in 2019 then discontinued it in 2022 when I started Lupron Depot (hormone suppression), and my add-back therapy for Lupron is a combination of Jencycla (a form of oral progesterone) and Estrace (a form of oral estrogen)
My gynecologist and I are currently in the process of finding out if I can have a laparoscopy to confirm whether I have endo and to remove it if it's there, we're both on board to do it but I've gotta talk to the anesthesiologist first to find out if it would be safe in combination with issues I have with my joints and my heart
Ever since I went on Lupron, I've been posting here on Tumblr about my gynecological issues as well as some of my other health issues when they seem to be in connection with my gynecological problems, using the organizational tag of #the estrogen is slapping right now which I have popped into the tags of this post for easy finding -- I suggest checking out this tag directly on my blog, since I also use it for reblogs and not just original posts
Suppressing my periods isn't for dysphoria reasons for me, I only do it to deal with my organs being diseased, but I'm using trans tags here bc some of this info could potentially be useful for those of you who are medically transitioning or wish to do so, in addition to possibly being helpful for people like me who are using these medications to treat conditions like endo
I'm open to questions about this stuff, so if there's something you're wondering that you can't find in my special tag or that I haven't written about, ask me!! I don't always have answers and also my body is really weird so I can't be a very good standard for expectations, but I'd like to help you as much as I can

you know I get abdominal pains frequently enough that they might not All be period cramps but if my body wanted me to correctly attribute and treat symptoms then it should 1) stop having PCOS and 2) be less vague and confusing about said abdominal pain

You know, even if medroxyprogesterone acetate injection stuff is a little weird, you should still be able to do it transdermally, I suppose you maybe don't have the first pass metabolism problem you do with oral bioidentical P, much to think about.
Also does anyone have like, good information on alternative progestins? I've seen people have opinions, but I've never been able to substantiate their claims with my own research
