Casting is Out For Premiere of Lavrosky's Romeo and Juliet at the Bolshoi!
April 4th (opening night):
Juliet: Elizaveta Kokoreva Romeo: Daniil Potaptsev Mercutio: Daniil Lopatin Tybalt: Mikhail Lobukhin
April 5th:
Juliet: Evgenia Obraztsova Romeo: Artem Ovcharenko Mercutio: Alexei Putintsev Tybalt: Alexander Vodopetov
April 6th (matinée):
Juliet: Eleonora Sevenard Romeo: Denis Rodkin Mercutio: Mark Chino Tybalt: Nikita Kapustin
April 6th (evening):
Juliet: Svetlana Zakharova Romeo: Artemy Belyakov Mercutio: Dmitry Smilevsky Tybalt: Denis Savin
April 7th:
Juliet: Ekaterina Krysanova Romeo: Vladislav Lantratov Mercutio: Denis Zakharov Tybalt: Igor Pugachev
Very excited about some of the line-ups! I'm especially excited about Sevenard performing Juliet as well as the Kokoreva-Putintsev pairing, and Krysanova-Lantratov will be lovely. But I'm not as crazy about Zakharova performing Juliet. I just don't see her as the youthful and sweet fourteen-year-old Juliet anymore. I know her and Krysanova are relatively similar in age, but for me I see Krysanova far more as Juliet. Still, it's Svetlana Zakharova, so I'm sure she'll pull it off.
Anyway, I'm very excited for this premiere!
P.S. Would love to see Vinogradova and Maymula as Juliet in this ballet at some point as well!

This is perhaps my favorite video to exist on youtube! I watch it way too often lol. These students were so lucky to share a stage with the dancers from Bolshoi.
It is so difficult to even choose favorite dancers in this performance. I would say Xenia Zhiganshina and Yulia Stepanova stood out for me though. Alyona Kovalyova danced my favorite variation, and I think she did a marvelous job here. I thought it was breath-taking. She's so tall though that in the end when she does the tour jete, it low key looked like she tripped lol. I know it's part of the choreography but my heart still skipped a beat. This performance is my Avengers Endgame haha.
Ooh, also. In the mazurka, look at how tiny the 2023 graduates are. Time flies. I still find it unacceptable that I'm now older than some prima ballerinas. Anyway, take a break for an hour and make sure to watch this the whole way through! I can also compile a playlist of the variations if anyone's interested. Oscar Frame 2017 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Conservatorie, music by H.S.Paulli) Eleonora Sevenard 2017 graduate (variation from the ballet Trilby, music by Y.Gerber) Alyona Kovalyova 2016 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Roi Candaule, music by C.Pugni) Xenia Zhiganshina 2014 graduate (variation from the ballet Gretna Green, music by E.Guiraud) Olga Smirnova 2011 graduate (variation from the ballet Paquita, music by L.Minkus) Mikhail Lobukhin 2002 graduate (variation from the ballet Don Quixote, music by L.Minkus) Yulia Stepanova 2009 graduate (variation from the ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse, music by C.Pugni) Evgenia Obraztsova 2002 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Pavillon d’Armide, music by N.Tcherepnin) Denis Rodkin (variation from the ballet La Source, music by R.Drigo) Svetlana Zakharova 1996 graduate (variation from the ballet La Sylphide, music by R.Drigo)

Silmarillion AU: The Ballet
When Túrin left Doriath, Beleg begged leave to follow after. He was captured by Túrin’s followers, who did not know Beleg and so tortured him, until Túrin returned and raised him up. Together they commanded the outlaws and guarded the land against Morgoth. But they were betrayed; Túrin’s men were killed, and Túrin himself captured. Beleg rescued him, but Túrin woke from his swoon in the dark of night and dealt his friend a mortal blow, for he did not recognize him.

is it only me or i just really dont like when elya and rodkin are partnered together?? yes they are a couple but i dont know how that translate to their work on stage. but look, like kimin and renata, i think they are exes?(correct me if im wrong in assuming their relationship lol) i really love when they dance together. i guess you just know when the partnering is done right.
It's honestly a disappointment because Sevenard + Rodkin should be the it couple right now for BT. Like on paper they should be everywhere and be blowing up all over the place. And they're just not??? Some people, like Kimin/Renata really do have that something special. And it doesn't even have to have any romantic feelings behind it at all, look at Nunes/Muntigirov! It's strange but some couples really don't work well together on stage and these two certainly aren't the first. Listen, I love Sevenard, but I'd much rather enjoy watching her when she's dancing with literally anyone else. I understand why they keep putting them together...but it wouldn't be my ideal pairing.

Bolshoi/ Promotions Asks
I saw Elya performed SL pas de deux with Rodkin as a gala..I think this is not the first time they’ve performed it together, I really hope he helps her rehearse O/O since she said multiple times that Denis teaches her/ makes her rehearse and that she will finally be given it when she is ready. Elya would make a gorgeous Odile I think
If/when she debuts it, I'm pretty confident saying they will debut together. It's a powerful marketing tactic for BT management and it will likely be more comfortable for Sevenard. I firmly believe she'd be absolutely mindblowing as Odile and I hope she'll get her chance soon.
Is the Russian ballet community fond of Kovaleva ? I don’t read any forum and from her insta it looks like she has little-normal following, considering she’s been a leading soloist for a while.
Of course, she has her super-fans, but my general perception is that she's liked only a touch more than Stepanova and Marchenkova. I do remember her account getting hacked in the past year or so, and she had to start again.
on what you were saying about Sevenard and her promotions (of lack thereof) - I feel bad for Elya. Whilst she definitely is a more bold dancer than your average M dancer, I think she’d have thrived at the Mariinsky Her placement at the Bolshoi was a political & slightly petty one, with Tsiskaridze sending her there as “revenge” for Fateyev rejecting Kovaleva. But now Kovaleva is shining in Vaziev’s eyes and Elya is def on a slower path. Esp when we know she was offered straight to soloist too
To be quite honest, Sevenard ending up at BT is a whole complicated affair. It really doesn't have much to do with Kovaleva, but more about Tsiskardize's aggressive favoritism, ambition, and hyper-promotion of her via casting, media appearances, and opportunities. Sevenard's own family and family descendency only make the target on her back bigger. Honestly, all of those factors did her no favors, she was really overexposed and everyone was waiting to watch her fail.
Just checked the bolshoi page and wow Kokoreva has also been promoted to leading soloist along with Sergeenkova! What do you think of these promotions? It’s like six or seven women now! Competition must have skyrocketed. Also Sasha Trikoz is finally a soloist!
....I honestly don't understand how BT manages their money. None of these are surprising but perhaps a bit fast but that's typical BT.
O.O I don’t understand this Sergeenkova fever at all . She is even less interesting than Kovaleva and she dances basically what Alena does, so what is the point of having her as a leading soloist/ principal? It would be much better to have both Sevenard and Kovaleva as principals.
She fits what Vaziev likes and what we've consistently seen him promote. She is an excellent adagio dancer and delivered a pretty decent Swan Lake on her first go. It wasn't perfect but of the really lanky girls that he loves, she's the most stable and is very promising. Also once Zakharova and Shipulina retire...who is gonna dance O/O? Kovaleva can't dance all the shows, they need to start preparing for the future.
I still think Sevenard will get promoted before everyone else because she's been such a steady workhorse and has bailed the BT out of disaster multiple times. However, she's had a couple of sloppier performances lately (her most recent DQ was a bit of a backslide) and needs to maintain her previous level. Honestly, I think part of this is Allash's fault for changing a lot of her variations but...I digress.
But honestly, Sevenard needs to nail a big dramatic lead or she really doesn't have an argument for promotion IMO. All she's shown right now is a rather shaky, mediocre Raymonda. She needs to debut (and blow the audience away as) either O/O or Nikiya or seriously improve her next Raymonda to be in serious consideration.
Is it just me or has Sevenard seemed to be getting messier? Ive been keeping up with all of her recent performances and especially her Kitris have hit me as not really being the cleanest. I love her so I hope it was just an off night. Her footwork just seems sloppy lately. Is it just me or has Sevenard seemed to be getting messier? Her footwork just seems sloppy lately.
I have to agree with you here. I'm not sure what it is. Is she injured or heavily overworked? Is Allash's scrambling of her variations to blame? Too much showboating and just generally neglecting the details in rehershals? Or simply a bad night?
What are some of your favorite dancers at the Bolshoi who are currently ranked as a soloist or a first soloist? I personally really like Anastasia Denisova and Margarita Shrayner.
Honestly, I had to look at the roster because they've done so many promotions lately and I was like WAIT WHAT RANK ARE THESE PEOPLE.
I would have to say my favorites at that rank are Kristina Kretova, Elonora Sevenard and Dmitry Smilevsky. I enjoy Kokoreva's dancing too.
