Update on Mariinsky Joiners!
Mariinsky has added new dancers to their website! So far, the Vaganova graduates who have joined the Mariinsky are:
Angelina Karamysheva
Daria Kulikova
Ksenia Potapova
Ekaterina Saplina
Usually, any foreign Vaganova graduates take longer for the Mariinsky to add to their website, likely because of Visa complications. So there may also be international dancers joining. I will update more when I know for sure.
Update:
They have added some boys to the website!
Nicholas Didenko
Dmitry Mukhametshin
Daler Ruzimatov
We also know that international students Jaden Grimm and Luca Dobos are joining as well.

Happy World Ballet Day!
Here’s Angelina dancing the peasant pas de deux variation from Giselle. Perfect until the last turn but she still did a marvelous job!
Def reminds me of Evgenia Obraztsova 💕 Looks and temperament!

did you see angelina karamysheva's bridesmaid variation debut? there is a video on youtube:)
I did, and thought she did a fine job. Very clean. Tempo seemed a bit slow, though. She’s also dancing the odalisque trio in Le Corsair — and she looks good in that, too. Giselle PPD & I think the Pas de Trois in Swan Lake. A great start for a recent grad!

Ask Responses - Vaganova
A compilation of responses to the Vaganova questions, which came through ask recently. Thank you for asking.
Hello! I saw the show Blue Bird where Anna Sharova and Angelina Karamysheva dance together. I find both of them are very promising dancers! After their performance they proceed to the couch where the lady who hosts the show seems to ask them something and their responses seem to make the judges laugh/amused throughout that conversation. I was wondering if you could kindly translate what they said in the conversation on the couch. Thank you so much in advance!
The hosts asks if it’s true that Tsiskaridze keeps tabs on what sorts of books the students are reading. The girls respond that it’s true, though Nikolai hasn’t actually checked up on either one of them yet. Tsiskaridze interjects to say that he only checks up on the students who are failing.
The hosts then asks what was it like to dance at the Mariinsky, and the girls respond that it’s a great responsibility and that they tried very hard to do their teachers and the academy justice. Both girls also say that they are never fully happy with their performances, though they always do their best.
They go on to talk about how well Anna and Angelina dance together, and the girls talk about their friendship and partnership on stage. Tsiskaridze adds that during the big performances, the girls compete with one another for “the centre”, the central spot in the foreground. And even though Nikolai tells them off for doing so, he thinks that it’s a mark of a future soloist.
Anna dreams of dancing the part of Giselle, while Angelina has her sights set on Kitri.
youtube
What did Tsiskaridze say to Kristina Spiridonova during last year's middle school graduation? The video can be found in Anna Shishanova's youtube channel, malipu.
He says she has to eat carrots. Lots and lots of carrots. He usually says this to the shorter students in the hopes that eating carrots will make them grow.
Is it just me or does Darya Ustyuzhanina (6th year student, incoming 7th) look like a younger Evgenia Obraztsova?
Not really.
If you were to cast this year's Nutcracker, which students will you pick for each lead role?
I hope Lana Khalimova returns to the academy and gets to dance Princess Masha. I would also like to see Maria Khoreva and Daria Ionova take on the role. I’d love to see more of Maria Bulanova and Maria Petukhova in the future (maybe the two leading snowflakes) and I’d like Sokolovsky and Zagidullin to dance the part of the Nutcracker Prince.
How strict do you think Tsiskaridze is compared to older ballet teachers, like his, Petyr Pestov? Do you think Vaganova teachers are "softer" to students nowadays?
If the stories are true, Tsiskaridze is a softy compared to Pestov. Russian ballet teachers have always been very strict and downright harsh, I don’t think this will ever change. Russians have a borderline militaristic approach to ballet education, which is partly why Russian dancers are so damn good.

Angelina Karamysheva and Anna Sharova in the Bluebird Competition.  I love watching this not only for their dancing, but for Tsiskaridze’s face during their performance and the judging after!  I have no idea what he, or anyone else, is saying, but he looks so proud of them!  I love it!

What are your thoughts on Eleonora Sevenard, Ksenia Sevenard, Polina Konogray, Lada Sartakova, and Angelina Karamysheva?
Hi! Thank you for your question!
As you can probably tell, Eleonora is on my favorites list. She has gorgeous turns, a beautiful back, and nice crisp footwork. She also has this smoothness to her dancing which I find to be a good asset about her. Having seen her performing Atonement alongside Manuel Garrido, I was mesmerized by her beauty and soul. Immediately, I had fallen in love with her. I would love to see her dance Nikiya in La Bayadere someday. I think she would be able to capture the nuances of the character quite well.
I’ve already written about Ksenia but I can’t figure out how to link to it so I’ll write it again. I actually like watching Ksenia in her class exams because she has this regal and sophisticated quality that I find especially intriguing. Aside from that, she has a nice flow to her dancing and gorgeous head movements. She dances with aplomb and poise, characteristics that I value very much in a dancer. I would love to see how she develops these next two years.
Apparently, Polina is injured at the moment which is really unfortunate because she’s a dancer of such great caliber! She seemed to have lots of character and spark in her and it saddens me to think she had to stop. Aside from that, she is extremely charming and she has this playfulness to her dancing. I hope to see her return to VBA soon!
I don’t like the idea that Lada was a ballet prodigy ever since she was a small child. It shows that the Kuramshin school really focused on getting the fame and glory of having young students doing impressive tricks rather than going through the basic principles of the Vaganova method first. I really haven’t seen much of Lada ever since she transferred to VBA (or maybe it’s because I don’t try to) but in the videos I have seen, I would have to say that I don’t really find anything special about her. Keep in mind, she is still young so she still has a lot of time to blossom.
Angelina seems very sweet and charming. That’s all I would have to say since she is still a second year…? I think? I prefer not to comment much on the younger students since they still have a lot of time to flourish and you never know what direction they will go.

About your recent ask, I saw that Koshkareva was offered a soloist position at the Bolshoi, so I guess that was it? I honestly was more bummed with Kuprina going to the BT because she has such good technique/lines/lyricism suited for the MT. But I'm happy for the other girls as well, such as Khiteeva, who are now getting opportunities. If the Mariinsky really didn't offer a high position to Koshkareva and Kuprina, I kinda agree. The BT/MT are trying so hard to find their new Vishneva/Zakharova, that they are taking girls fresh out of school to big soloists positions and how time has proven, it didn't go well. They can't repeat what Diana and Svetlana were, and they shouldn't try. There's nothing wrong with growing at the theater, like Lopatkina, Tereshkina, Novikova, Krysanova, Obraztsova, and many others who are now big names and climbed the ranks. I'm also hopeful that the MT may take Kulikova, Karamysheva, and Rissanen now.
Yes, a soloist position would be very hard to turn down, especially since right now Vaziev is pushing dancers even faster than Fateyev is at the Mariinsky.
And I too wanted Kuprina to go to the Mariinsky, definitely bummed about that.
Personally, I also prefer when dancers start in the Corps de Ballet, even if it's just for a year. I think it's nice for everyone to start out on a level playing field, though of course the theatre will give bigger roles to the "star" graduates right away. Starting in the Corps gives dancers the ability to build strength and experience without the added pressure of a higher rank.
I do agree that Vaziev is trying to replicate what he did with Zakharova and Vishneva at the Mariinsky now at the Bolshoi, so far with Sergeenkova and Ar. Denisova. I like these dancers a lot but think they could have benefited from a slightly slower trajectory. Now we'll see how quickly Kuprina, Koshkareva, and Valiullina move up in the ranks. I also think BBA graduates Netsvetaeva-Dolgaleva and Konovalova show great promise and might get some big parts right off the bat as well.
To your last comment, we know now that Kulikova and Karamysheva were taken by the Mariinsky! They're both wonderful young dancers and I'm so happy for them! As for Rissanen, as I said in an earlier post, often the Mariinsky takes longer to add international graduates to their website, so I'm not sure where she's going yet.
Thanks for such a detailed ask and I appreciate your insights and opinions!

Thoughts on the VBA graduation exams? I know that Kuprina's and Koshkareva's future are set at the Mariinsky, but I'm rooting so much for Karamysheva and Valiulina! They are my favorites. Please, share with us who are the girls that will get accepted at each theater, when they announce it!
Sorry for the late reply, I wanted to wait for most of the state exams to be completed before I responded!
Yes, I was especially impressed with Karamysheva! After I saw clips from her exams I rewatched her variations from IBC Moscow and I wish she had placed higher. She reminds me of a young Obraztsova and yet she also has a unique energy about her.
Really, so many girls are so so strong this year, I think the graduation performances will be exceptional. I found it interesting also how evenly split the two classes are. Usually, there's one class with most of the strongest students, but not this year. Yulia Kasenkova has Kuprina, Karamysheva, Rissanen, and Kulikova and Lyudmila Kovaleva has Koshkareva and Valiullina.
I will definitely update as soon as I start hearing official news about who's going where! It always excites me to find out about where each graduating class ends up.
I agree that Kuprina and Koshkareva are most likely going to be going to the Mariinsky. I'm hoping Valiullina will go to the Bolshoi, I think she'd fit there really well. I was a little worried that Karamysheva might not be invited to the Mariinsky because of her size/proportions. However, on the other hand, the Mariinsky has recently taken quite a lot of shorter dancers including Ustyuzhanina, Shevela, and Lyskova so I think she definitely has a really good shot, especially considering how technically strong she is.

VBA Questions
Do you think tsiskaridze made a casting mistake this year's grad performance??? Or do you think they were suitable to their given role??? thanks
Yes and no? I think his casting does the actual graduating class a disservice by refusing to cast them in leading roles. This show is for the grads to get jobs, the underclassmen have PLENTY of exposure already. If the graduate class isn't strong enough to do so...then that's a whole separate issue. The decline of the male talent is also very evident and I'm not sure Raymonda's grand pas de deux was a wise choice.
But mostly, I think the girls he picked were suitable for the roles even though I would have liked to see others highlighted. I would have liked to see Kuprina get a shot at "Queen of the Night" but I understand why she didn't.
Honestly, it's pretty simple, Kuprina stepped up to the plate at Moscow IBC and Valiullina didn't. Based on their performances at the competition, it's pretty clear that Fateyev viewed Kuprina as more prepared for a traineeship and chose her instead.
seems like vba grad concert at kremlin was a success. what do you think about it?
The 2022 grad class were essentially wall flowers, the poaching of underutilized MT boys to dance roles solves neither VBA's male training issues or MT's refusal to give more young guys chances, and the repertoire selection was perhaps not the best.
That being said, the 2023 class danced very well, on the whole.
In previous ask, you talk about Karamysheva doesn’t have the ideal body proportions. Can you explain why, I’m not a ballerina so I don’t know. Because for me she have similar body type with Sofia Valiulina but shorter. Anna Sharova doesn’t post much about ballet. She’s most prob the shortest between the 5 of them, might be taller than Maria Koshkaryova but Koshkaryova is lithe. Sharova and Karamysheva always seem to be the shortest in their class even when they were in the documentary.
Talking about their documentary, I found it weird we never saw of Maria Koshkaryova and Sofia Valiulina when they are in the same year. But Valiulina did appear in the other documentary with Renata Shakirova. Sharova and Valiulina both talks about playing little Masha in their docu respectively. But Kosharyova also has videos of her dancing little Masha.
It's not so much her height that's the issue but more her proportions. The ratio of her legs compared to her torso isn't 'ideal.' Theaters and especially Russian ones are currently favoring dancers with longer legs because the current aesthetic and glorification of the ideal body line favor dancers with longer extremities. Valiulina is a bit lankier and she also appears taller to me, both factors that will likely give her an edge in major Russian theatres.
Honestly, I wouldn't put much stock on who we saw in that documentary. They were so young, I imagine the teachers chose girls who could speak well on camera at that age in addition to their place in the classes/ nutcracker roles. Also Koshkaryova could have been filmed but was cut by the editing team for cohesion/clarity. Additionally, those who are doing well at the start aren't always those who do well at the end. Eleonora Sevenard is a great example, she has talked about how she was barely scraping by in her first few years and it was only later that she started to apply herself and got featured more.
what do you think of sofya valiullina as raymonda?
Better performance than anything she gave at the competition, especially in the upper body but still shaky in the legs in the variation. I wonder how much time she spent preparing for this versus all those variations, the difference in preparation seems to benefit her confidence greatly. Even though her legs weren't always correct and her pointe work still got a bit untidy, she was still selling it from the waist up. That didn't happen in Moscow.
russian audience doesnt seem to like valiullina so much compared to koshkareva whose got endless praises while the former gets so much hate. like why????
Koshkaryova's stability and reliability have gained her fans, she's hard to dislike because she's met or exceeded all expectations placed on her. Valiullina has not met expectations, failed to place in the competition, and has unfortunately made herself a target for negativity.
not gonn lie i think ive enjoyed sofia's raymonda way better than Xoreva's stony expression at her debut. lmfao im sorry, ok i know the latter is technically flawless but the former's raymonda got more character???
I complimented Valiullina's improved presence above. However, I don't think that Valiullina dancing a grand pas de deux for about 10 minutes is comparable to Khoreva dancing the full-length Raymonda for over two hours.
yaroslavna kuprina has become a trainee of MT. so happy for her! but, well, valiullina is not fateev's choice? or MT is not her choice?
Honestly, it's pretty simple, Kuprina stepped up to the plate at Moscow IBC and Valiullina didn't. Based on their performances at the competition, it's pretty clear that Fateyev viewed Kuprina as more prepared for a traineeship and chose her instead.
Ive read an article that while Valiullina isnt as technically great as Koshkaryova but the former has charisma while she performs.
Valiullina's definitely not as stable or as confident in her abilities as Koshkaryova. Yet she does have this natural, effortless elegance and carriage throughout her upper that makes her look really mature and sophisticated. Honestly, it reminds me a bit of young Olga Smirnova, but Valiullina has a bit more warmth.
Maria Koshkareva got an intership with the mariinsky... What roles do you think they will/should give her?
I figure she'll get most of the standard starting roles for hyped grads, like Swan Lake PD3, Shades PD3, Corsaire PD3, maybe a Sleeping Beauty fairy or trio as well.
Asking the VBA wizard about Anna Sharova. She seems to fall behind a lot compared to other girls in her year. Did she not enjoy ballet anymore considering her ig have removed anything about ballet? Also is she too short for VBA/Mariinsky standard?
Leaving this one for the VBA Wizard if they see it! I don't know her exact height but it has been speculated that she might be.
Hi Ale! Do you know why Yana Cherepanova didn't continue to study at Vaganova and what is she doing now?
She doesn't study at VBA because she didn't pass her exam for her 3rd or 4th year, I can't remember which. She is now studying at the Dolgushin School of Ballet in St Petersburg.

I just saw that Yulia Kasenkova wished Angelina Karamysheva good luck at the Mariinsky. I’m really happy for her, I think she’s an amazing dancer. But I’ll say it’s a little funny that we all got it wrong and Kuprina, Koshkareva and Valiullina are going to the Bolshoi (when especially the first two seemed destined for the Mariinsky) and Karamysheva was considered more Bolshoi material…
I'm also so happy for Angelina Karamysheva! She has a lot of talent and also a really charismatic and exciting energy when she steps on stage.
I do think Karamysheva is a better fit for the Mariinsky than the Bolshoi, but yes I had hoped Kuprina and Koshkareva would be heading to the Mariinsky too! Well . . . at least Kulikova is there!

Please, share some news and your thoughts on Vaganova last graduation performance! I'm really curious to know where are the girls going! I know that from Kasenkova's class, she always show much support to Kulikova, Karamysheva, Sharova, Rissanen and Kuprina (though she's going to the BT). So my guess is, if the MT is taking four girls this year, it will be them. But it's just a guess anyway... but I hope it happens. They are good, but aren't much in the spotlight compared to the ones going to BT
I enjoyed the graduation performances, the students all performed wonderfully. Their cleanliness on stage made me feel like it was close to watching a professional company's performance. I especially enjoyed Koshkareva and Kodama-Pomfret's grand pas de deux, Risannen's variation, and Valiulina and Kulikova's variations. Kuprina also performed beautifully, though I thought she especially didn't get enough time on stage.
I enjoyed them bringing back the Laurencia Wedding scene which hasn't been put on in full by Vaganova since 2015. And having the Lively Garden from Le Corsaire was entirely new to the Vaganova.
However, I was hoping for a three-act performance like they've had in many past years. Even though they did Paquita three years in a row (2017-2019), now that it's been four years I would have liked for them to perform it since it gives so many dancers an opportunity for featured roles. It would have also been wonderful for them to do the Kingdom of the Shades which I believe hasn't been put on since 2011 with Shapran and Smirnova as Nikiya. There isn't often that Vaganova has a dancer mature and talented enough to perform the role, and I think there were quite a few graduates this year who could have done it, especially Kuprina or Koshkareva.
Really, my reasoning for wanting more pieces in the graduation shows are that the 8th year and 7th year classes are so so strong and there were so many girls that could have been featured more heavily. Even Kuprina and Koshkareva had only one relatively short appearance each compared to star graduates in the past who either had many different roles or one large leading role. However Kuprina, Koshkareva, and Barinova all shared the spotlight in Le Corsaire and then that was it for them.
I was also disappointed with how little Karamysheva was used. Her only featured role was as one of the Four Girls in Laurencia. Karamysheva would have made a beautiful Gulnare, 1st Odalisque, or Pasquala.
I'm still not positive where Karamysheva, Sharova, and Rissanen are going, but I know for sure now that Kulikova is going to the Mariinsky! Thank goodness with Kuprina, Koshkareva, and Valiullina all going to the Bolshoi. Hopefully Karamysheva, Sharova, and Rissanen were invited too. We'll see!
But even if some of them weren't accepted, it's definitely not the end of the world! Dancers who haven't been the absolute best in their graduating class who have gone to smaller theaters have often done very well. There's Lada Sartakova ('21) as a first soloist at the Primorsky, Mara Tudose ('21) as a leading soloist at the Eifman, Polina Chekhoviskikh ('20) as a soloist at Samara, and Maria Arseneva ('19) as a soloist at Novosibirsk to name just a few of the most recent ones!

Hey Ale, if you could make a top5 with Valiulina, Sharova, Koshkaryova, Kuprina and Karamysheva. How would you choose? From first to fifth place. Oh, and I know they're all great (Valiulina my favorite).
Maria Koshkaryova- seemingly has it all right now. The presence, the clarity, the control, and the big one: reliability. She's proven that she's got the right temperament to succeed in this profession. She nailed her Masha debuts, was rock solid at the competition when everyone around her faltered, and held it together for all the grad performances.
Angelina Karamysheva- Knows how to use what she's got and that is a huge puzzle solved. I'm always a sucker for girls who can jump, some of her variations chosen really portrayed her in a flattering light like Coppelia and Kitri. Was a bit hit or miss in bigger moments, this is why she needs another year of school. I worry the most about her career because she doesn't have ideal proportions for Russian ballet. Could honestly see MT not taking her or keeping her in the corps forever. Wouldn't be surprised if she ended up elsewhere tbh.
Yaroslavna Kuprina- Came into the competition as the underdog and really made the most of her opportunities and got herself a traineeship for it! Reminds me a bit of young Alina Somova, she's got an excellent, flexible body that lends itself well to nice extensions but doesn't always keep the turnout in between these big poses. However, what I like is that you can see her fight. When she is a little bit off, she doesn't let her body collapse, she grabs her core and just refuses to fall off her leg.
Sofia Valiullina- Stylistically, she's my favorite by far. Her upper body and the elegance she has even as a 6th-year student but I found her lack of confidence and honestly bad repertoire selection for Moscow IBC to be damaging. When she gets nervous, she gets sloppy and closed off. This needs to change in her final year, she needs more belief in herself!
Anna Sharova- She's last simply because I've seen the least of her and have very little to judge her on.

What role do you want to see girls of vba class 2023 dance? I understand it may be too early to ask this…
Ooof really early, but I'll do off-the-cuff type stuff? Writing this one late at night, so I'm just gonna say the first thing that comes to mind
Koshkareyva: Aurora,
Kuprina: Nikiya
Valiulina: Odette/Odile
Karamysheva: Swanilda (secretly think this girl better suits BT)
Debates/alternatives are welcome, deliberately did not put a ton of thought into these

have you seen valiullina's small adagio??? The partnering needs a lot of practice esp the liftings, they are a bit struggling. or maybe i just expected more?? also kuprina is a lovely fairy doll, her long limbs are just magnificent creating beautiful lines. koshkareva, exceeds expectations as usual,
I have seen the videos and will link them below. Was impressed by all three. Kurpina is exceptionally precise and measured and looks even stronger than over the summer. She has excellent control over her plie and uses it well, those double attitudes with both arms up were spot on. This isn't a role I'd instinctively think would suit her but she's so endearing and charming.
I thought Koshkareva coped very well with the challenging Rose adagio. I wish they put her in a slightly darker colour tutu, I think that would have been more flattering for her. Some small moments of nerves, but honestly, I'd blame some of those boys...They caused me some stress and honestly, Koshkareva could do most of it without them. Boys!! You still need to mind your posture and turnout when standing on the side stage!!! You can't stand around or partner with turned in feet!!! Also, the two guys passing the dropped rose from one guy to another made me absolutely lose it.
I am...still intrigued as to why they are hyping up Luka Dubos. He danced twice in this concert, is a foreigner, and was the only boy given a solo variation. Side rant: (I also don't understand why VBA's technique for teaching 'double' saut de basques is so bad. They all do this high, floaty chasse or tombe+coupé to get into it, and their weight is way too elevated. If you watch any pro with a really good, fully rotated double saut de basque, you'll see how low to the ground their preparation is, allowing them to explode upwards.) I was pleased by Valiullina's performance and happy to see her looking joyful and confident but definitely saw moments of laborious partner work. Hopefully another month or so of practice will help iron it out.
Karamysheva also danced really well, with impeccable entrechat six and beautiful musicality. Of the younger girls, the most memorable performance for me was the girl who danced the Diamond in the Precious Stones pas de Quatre, I believe her name is Sofya Romanovich. The credits at the beginning only list the names of the 4 girls and I'm not sure if the order is significant at all, happy to hear any further details here. I also liked the Lilac Fairy from Daira Kulikova. Needs a bit more strength in her legs to jump but quality arabesque line and turned out transitions.
