One of the greatest ballet recordings of all time is Marco Spada with David Hallberg, Evgenia Obraztsova, Semyon Chudin, Olga Smirnova, and Igor Tsvirko from 2013. Everything about it is flawless and I can't really watch any Marco Spada without comparing it to that performance. No one can or will come close.

My top 3 Mariinsky/Kirov Auroras
3. Diana Vishneva
She is sweet, playful, and carefree. Her personality suits aurora perfectly! I may have been fooled but it seems that this is but a fortunate coincidence. By nature, she embodies Aurora.
youtube
2. Evgenia Obraztsova
In my (perhaps controversial) opinion, she is the greatest dancer of her generation. The most absolute classical lines with such great charisma and personality. She has the sweet charm of youth, and the maturity to show the growth and change in responsibility by act three. An absolute fairytale princess.
youtube
1. Alla Sizova
The Aurora. yes, she has incomparable leaps, extraordinary technique, and is all around absolutely darling. But it's more than all that. Her seemingly effortless interpretation is unlike anyone else. I'm not sure it can be captured in words, at least, not by me. If you are yet unfamiliar, please enjoy the most perfect production of The Sleeping Beauty
youtube
honourable mentions
olesya novikova, stunning in the role but she has made such an impression in other roles that i don't automatically think aurora for her
altynai alsmurtnova, again just beautiful in what i have seen, but there is such little video and none of very good quality that it’s hard to place her as a favourite
Even narrowing myself to this one company, I could go on adding so many incredible dancers. So, I will stop myself here. Please let me know your favourites!

This is perhaps my favorite video to exist on youtube! I watch it way too often lol. These students were so lucky to share a stage with the dancers from Bolshoi.
It is so difficult to even choose favorite dancers in this performance. I would say Xenia Zhiganshina and Yulia Stepanova stood out for me though. Alyona Kovalyova danced my favorite variation, and I think she did a marvelous job here. I thought it was breath-taking. She's so tall though that in the end when she does the tour jete, it low key looked like she tripped lol. I know it's part of the choreography but my heart still skipped a beat. This performance is my Avengers Endgame haha.
Ooh, also. In the mazurka, look at how tiny the 2023 graduates are. Time flies. I still find it unacceptable that I'm now older than some prima ballerinas. Anyway, take a break for an hour and make sure to watch this the whole way through! I can also compile a playlist of the variations if anyone's interested. Oscar Frame 2017 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Conservatorie, music by H.S.Paulli) Eleonora Sevenard 2017 graduate (variation from the ballet Trilby, music by Y.Gerber) Alyona Kovalyova 2016 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Roi Candaule, music by C.Pugni) Xenia Zhiganshina 2014 graduate (variation from the ballet Gretna Green, music by E.Guiraud) Olga Smirnova 2011 graduate (variation from the ballet Paquita, music by L.Minkus) Mikhail Lobukhin 2002 graduate (variation from the ballet Don Quixote, music by L.Minkus) Yulia Stepanova 2009 graduate (variation from the ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse, music by C.Pugni) Evgenia Obraztsova 2002 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Pavillon d’Armide, music by N.Tcherepnin) Denis Rodkin (variation from the ballet La Source, music by R.Drigo) Svetlana Zakharova 1996 graduate (variation from the ballet La Sylphide, music by R.Drigo)

I was wondering about how long it is since the last time Bolshoi staged Sleeping Beauty, so I went to check it on their website but apparently they removed it from the repertoire list. Same goes with Esmeralda. Do you perhaps know any news/something about what had happened?
That is really strange, especially because Aurora is one of those prima ballerina-defining roles. I hadn’t noticed its absence from the repertoire until you pointed it out. What a mystery….especially because I’ve seen Obratzsova and Chudin dance the wedding PDD quite recently. But come to think of it, it was probably at galas at other theaters.
In the past, I had not followed the Bolshoi as much, but after the three recent Vaganova phenoms chose The Big, I started to pay more attention. Between the forums and telegram channels, there is just so much gossip and alleged dysfunction that it’s somewhat exhausting.

Do you know how tall Sevenard is? At the Bolshoi Krysanova seems to be the shortest O/O
Hmm when I met her, I believe she was the tiniest bit shorter than me? I'm about 1.7m and she was a couple cm shorter. Google says 167-8 (around 5'6") and that seems about right to me.
I think Krysanova is a touch shorter. And yes, she's the shortest O/O, or at least the shortest one to dance the role at BT. Obratsova has danced it but not on BT's stage.

hi! I often see dancers being described as soubrettes, and I think I know what that means just based on the names of dancers being described as soubrettes (correct me if I'm wrong, but short and charismatic and maybe couquettish?) but what are the alternative types for those who don't fall into the soubrette category? is there a whole lexicon of names for performer types? I would love to know if there are existing ballet vocabulary words for descriptions like "leggy adagio types" or whatever because that just sounds silly
To be honest, I don’t know if there are other labels. I’ve only read about soubrette! Given that most dancers are in the long-limbed category, I think Russia (in particular) has singled out soubrette dancers who tend to be more petite, fast jumpers and turners. Think of Amour in Don Quixote. (Obratzsova is my fave here.)
