I'm not sure if i'm tripping or anything but I think Maria Khoreva changed her Instagram bio and removed the soloist with the Mariinsky theatre part ? This doesn't sound good to me especially with her ongoing injury. But her telegram page bio still has that part and she's still listed on the mariinsky website.
Oh….that could launch 1000 conspiracies! Maybe it’s simply because IG is technically banned in Russia, and IG/YouTube is used for her global reach? I dunno. It’s weird. Very weird. 🤔

People might roll their eyes for me saying this - but I truly am impressed by Khoreva’s improvements since her return to the stage. Like, can we take a second to appreciate just how much she has grown? Especially after touring in China and her most recent Don Quixote. I notice that she’s much more interactive with her partners, as well as more expressive in general. She seems much more confident on stage. I think she’s maturing into a wonderful artist who - while not quite there yet - will absolutely be deserving of principal status someday.
I recognize that not everyone has the same taste in dancers, and she is understandably not everyone’s favorite ballerina, but I do wish her detractors would give credit where it is due. While it is true that she has a lot of privilege, it is also true that she works very hard - and it shows. I wish people weren’t so quick to discredit her.
This also might be a controversial opinion, but I really don’t see what’s wrong with her social media presence. She seems like a young person who loves ballet and is sharing that with the world. She’s also contributed to the rising interest in ballet over recent years (almost as an ambassador for her art of sorts), and I see more people loving ballet as a good thing. Social media isn’t going anywhere, so we might as well get over ourselves and embrace it. Maybe my bias is showing, but I find her a lot more tolerable than some of the other influencer-type ballerinas.
Anyway, thanks for listening to my thoughts! I know my opinion is a popular one with her international fans, so maybe I’m beating a dead horse. Still felt compelled to share though. I appreciate that you always seem to take a kind and balanced approach, even when offering critiques.
So so sorry for the late reply! Thanks for sharing, I love chatting on here about this kind of thing.
I've spoken a bit about Khoreva before and I'm definitely not hiding that I'm a Khoreva fan so I'm totally in agreement with you.
I don't always love the "instagram ballerina" thing because there are some dancers on social media who seem to focus more on number of turns, hyperextensions, etc rather than artistry. However, Khoreva is definitely not one of them. I find a lot of her posts to be really interesting and insightful and I love her adagio combination videos. I especially like her youtube account because I'm grateful for any opportunity to watch more videos of Mariinsky performances.
I've also spoken some already about how much I've enjoyed seeing the growth of Khoreva's acting skills in the past couple of years and the new maturity in her after she returned from her injury. You're right, It's totally valid for Khoreva to just not be someone's favorite dancer (everyone has different taste), but I really feel like the excess criticism she gets is a David and Goliath kind of thing. She's just been given so many opportunities and advanced so fast that it's easier for some people to root for dancers like Khiteyeva (whom I also love) who spent years in the Corps de Ballet waiting for their shot.
I was so upset to hear that Khoreva is out on another injury so soon and I'm hoping that she recovers fully soon!
Thanks again for sharing!
P.S. Why on earth has Khoreva not performed Grand Pas Classique yet? This needs to happen!

This is perhaps my favorite video to exist on youtube! I watch it way too often lol. These students were so lucky to share a stage with the dancers from Bolshoi.
It is so difficult to even choose favorite dancers in this performance. I would say Xenia Zhiganshina and Yulia Stepanova stood out for me though. Alyona Kovalyova danced my favorite variation, and I think she did a marvelous job here. I thought it was breath-taking. She's so tall though that in the end when she does the tour jete, it low key looked like she tripped lol. I know it's part of the choreography but my heart still skipped a beat. This performance is my Avengers Endgame haha.
Ooh, also. In the mazurka, look at how tiny the 2023 graduates are. Time flies. I still find it unacceptable that I'm now older than some prima ballerinas. Anyway, take a break for an hour and make sure to watch this the whole way through! I can also compile a playlist of the variations if anyone's interested. Oscar Frame 2017 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Conservatorie, music by H.S.Paulli) Eleonora Sevenard 2017 graduate (variation from the ballet Trilby, music by Y.Gerber) Alyona Kovalyova 2016 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Roi Candaule, music by C.Pugni) Xenia Zhiganshina 2014 graduate (variation from the ballet Gretna Green, music by E.Guiraud) Olga Smirnova 2011 graduate (variation from the ballet Paquita, music by L.Minkus) Mikhail Lobukhin 2002 graduate (variation from the ballet Don Quixote, music by L.Minkus) Yulia Stepanova 2009 graduate (variation from the ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse, music by C.Pugni) Evgenia Obraztsova 2002 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Pavillon d’Armide, music by N.Tcherepnin) Denis Rodkin (variation from the ballet La Source, music by R.Drigo) Svetlana Zakharova 1996 graduate (variation from the ballet La Sylphide, music by R.Drigo)

Do you know if Maria Khoreva switched her coach at the Mariinsky? I know it always used to be Elvira Tarasova but in her recent Instagram post about Swan Lake she mentions Tatiana Gennadievna (Terekhova). Do you think they just prepared SL together or might it be permanent?
I did see this and was surprised by this! Would love to know if anyone has more information!

I've heard that Maria Khoreva got injured during Swan Lake today, I don't know any more details though
I heard. I don't have any details, other than it is a knee injury and Tereshkina replaced her on the fly. What horrible luck. I can imagine that sustaining an injury on stage must be the absolute worst feeling. I wish her a full recovery.

A lot is said about Khoreva and her poor acting kills, lack of emotions and connection to her partner, etc. Honestly, I think it's blown out of proportion. She has come leaps and bounds ever since she started out. I'd say she has been dancing with a lot more feeling ever since she returned from injury. Her latest Bayadere was particularly lovely imho. And I enjoyed her Swan Lake debut.
With that said, how could she fix this? I guess some people are naturally expressive with their faces (like Bulanova and Khiteeva, for example, they command your attention effortlessly! ) and some aren't as much. And so how does one fix this? Acting classes? Better coaching? More experience on stage on a particular role to become less nervy? Just wait for the maturity?
I agree that most of the critiques about Maria Khoreva's emotional capacity are overblown. One reason for this is that many of the videos of her on youtube are from when she was eighteen and in her first season as a professional. Like you said, her Nikiya has improved so much since her debut in 2019 and the same could be said for plenty of her other roles.
Khoreva's maturity on stage will continue to improve naturally with time, but I wouldn't say that her more subdued style in itself is something that needs to be fixed. While she is not as dramatic on stage as someone like Bulanova, I don't see this as a problem as long as Khoreva isn't cast in roles like Zarema. I myself find Khoreva's cleanliness and elegance on stage just as compelling as Bulanova's fierce personality. It's all about personal taste.

What do you then think of Maria koshkareva’s debut in paquita?
For me I think her technique is great, but idk why I do not feel not much stage presence and charisma from her… not sure if it’s just me. She just look like a member of the corp de ballet when they all dance together, the only way to know she’s the lead is that she’s wearing a different costume…
It could have been A LOT better. You’re correct in that she didn’t stand out.
My concern for her in her past debuts was that she’s usually uncontrolled. We can see it in her Vaganova exams too, she’s clearly a risk taker. Sometimes even sacrificing clean finishes.
I didn’t see that brave dancer in her Paquita debut and I honestly expected more. This is usually a role that young dancers can excel in, like Alexandra Khiteyeva in her graduation performance. Masha, I think, overcorrected and was way too controlled this time. I think she had a lot more stage presence in her Trilby variation.
This might be a controversial opinion but I think Maria Koshkaryova and Maria Khoreva are both technical dancers but are not expressive dancers. Sofya Valiullina and Maria Bulanova are a bit more well rounded. They look like they are enjoying their dances, almost like they’re relishing every movement. That’s the kind of charisma I wish both the Maria Ks had.
That being said, it’s typically common in younger dancers to not have an established personality yet. I think Masha’s Paquita debut was def premature. Since she’s a soloist, they really shouldn’t have given her a principal role this early.
(Gosh so many Marias, and now that I think about it, I’m a Maria too lol)

Another one! The clothing is actually a little more accurate for this one cause I looked at a few reference pics of celebratory kurdish wear! I like her very much! Would the dancer literally die from that turtle neck and head dress? Yes. But this is just a design which I like!

So glad u r back! I'd love to hear ur opinion on Shakirova and Khoreva SL debuts.
I thought neither gave particularly strong performances.
I found myself more disappointed with Shakirova because I had higher expectations for her, especially after seeing her take on the role of Nikiya. In her desire to be emotional and expressive, lots of poses and moments were not academically correct, turned in, or aesthetically displeasing. I generally consider her an extravagant, bold, and daring performer, but sometimes she lost control of her body as a result. Additionally, these strengths were muted by technical shortcomings and the watering down of the classical text. Now I understand she doesn't have the classical 'swan' plasticity but there's a stark difference between that and simply desperately to emote with distorted lines while ignoring the music. In some cases, famous passages of choreography were changed, such as the port de bras opening of Odette's solo- technique is not an afterthought or an option- not with the classics.
Maria Khoreva danced as I expected her to dance? The majority of the big moments were clean and solid, and some of her messy transitions aside, it was a technically competent performance. But that's not enough, especially for someone who's supposed to be the next star of the company. Perhaps it's different in person, but I feel absolutely no connection between her and her partner, the brilliant Stepin, when she's dancing the adagios. I feel like all she's worrying about is keeping her legs by her ears. The two facial expressions she alternates between aren't captivating and I rarely feel much of anything when watching her. Just oh, she finished the variation.
