Mariinsky Observations...
I was looking over the playbill and noticed that the company is going to present Anyuta in early December. It seems to be the same one that the Bolshoi performs. I've never seen it but will look for clips online. The cast has not been announced, but there is a list of dancers rehearing lead roles. I was happy to see Alexandra Khiteeva's name in there. I also noticed that David Zaleyev is rehearsing…I don't think he's returned to the stage since his horrible accident, so I hope this is a sign that he will soon return to the stage.
Coming up…the Mariinsky's last performance of Jewels in the foreseeable future. I've read that their license expires soon, so the 11/28 performance is their last. Tereshkina & Shklyarov will lead in Diamonds. The are the dream couple here, but I would have loved to see more performances just to see how other dancers handle the choreography. My pairings would be: Skorik & Capitaine, Iliushkina & Korneyev, Batoeva & Stepin. Khiteeva in Emeralds. Alas… I hope that there are lots of recordings of this last performance. Maria Bulanova seems to be underutilized these days. I haven't read anything about an injury, so I hope she's rehearsing and preparing new roles. Anyone have news about what she's working on?

This is perhaps my favorite video to exist on youtube! I watch it way too often lol. These students were so lucky to share a stage with the dancers from Bolshoi.
It is so difficult to even choose favorite dancers in this performance. I would say Xenia Zhiganshina and Yulia Stepanova stood out for me though. Alyona Kovalyova danced my favorite variation, and I think she did a marvelous job here. I thought it was breath-taking. She's so tall though that in the end when she does the tour jete, it low key looked like she tripped lol. I know it's part of the choreography but my heart still skipped a beat. This performance is my Avengers Endgame haha.
Ooh, also. In the mazurka, look at how tiny the 2023 graduates are. Time flies. I still find it unacceptable that I'm now older than some prima ballerinas. Anyway, take a break for an hour and make sure to watch this the whole way through! I can also compile a playlist of the variations if anyone's interested. Oscar Frame 2017 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Conservatorie, music by H.S.Paulli) Eleonora Sevenard 2017 graduate (variation from the ballet Trilby, music by Y.Gerber) Alyona Kovalyova 2016 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Roi Candaule, music by C.Pugni) Xenia Zhiganshina 2014 graduate (variation from the ballet Gretna Green, music by E.Guiraud) Olga Smirnova 2011 graduate (variation from the ballet Paquita, music by L.Minkus) Mikhail Lobukhin 2002 graduate (variation from the ballet Don Quixote, music by L.Minkus) Yulia Stepanova 2009 graduate (variation from the ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse, music by C.Pugni) Evgenia Obraztsova 2002 graduate (variation from the ballet Le Pavillon d’Armide, music by N.Tcherepnin) Denis Rodkin (variation from the ballet La Source, music by R.Drigo) Svetlana Zakharova 1996 graduate (variation from the ballet La Sylphide, music by R.Drigo)

I'm rooting for Maria Khoreva's comeback. The only thing that scares me is with the comeback + the 2023 class graduation coming, there'll be a lot of competition. Safe to say Iliushkina, Khoreva and Nagahisa is a matter of a short time to be principals. Khiteeva unfortunately I'm kinda losing hope. But I'm scared for Shakirova most definitely. Among the favorites of the audience, she's the most underrated one by the management, which is sad, because she's the best of them.
Based on Khoreva's recent post, she's going to be back on stage very very soon after about 8 months off. I'm not too worried for her honestly, she has been consistently prioritized by management and even though the 2023 class is strong, I don't think even Koshkareva can match Khoreva's off-stage support.
If Khiteeva isnt promoted to soloist by the end of the season, I honestly think she should jump ship and head somewhere else because I think she's going to get buried. Now I'd love to see her in Munich or Berlin but that might be too complicated nowadays, but I think she'd get more chances even if she went to MK or Stasik. She's too unique to sit in the corps.
I am fairly confident in Iliushkina's eventual promotion, her beautiful lyricism is helped by the fact that she has an excellent set partner in Korneyev and he's around her age. This is a huge advantage that a lot of her 'competition' lacks. I was never sold on Nagahisa going all the way up but the "sudden" massive uptick in her popularity since returning back to Russia is making me reconsider.
Shakirova is a tricky case because I think it's all about the timing. While Khoreva was been injured and Shakirova has really blossomed, most notably with that Bayadere debut. Additionally, Iliushkina is a completely different dancer stylistically, there's room for both of them at the top easily. MT doesn't promote principals often and there's a lot of people wondering how much longer some of the older ballerinas are going to continue their careers. Kondaurova is 40 and has recently recovered from Achilles surgery, Novikova is 39 and became a mother for the 3rd time and Tereshkina is 39 and also battling injuries. I think it benefits Shakirova if a spot 'opens up' sooner rather than later because there's less time for some of the young ones to catch up.
Side note: I understand why Vishneva is on the roster, but it certainly feels factitious with the amount of actual dancing she's doing nowadays.

Ballet Asks Part 2
“Idk if I’m the only one who thinks so but as a general trend, the Bolshoi up and comers are much more interesting, have a lot more distinct styles and personalities than their Mariinsky counterparts - with the exceptions of Shakirova, Bulanova and Caixeta. I mean, Khoreva, Nuikina, Borodulina, Nagahisa, Khiteyeva, Lukina have zero personality and are virtually the same kind of dancer yet look where they are rn. IMO even Mariinsky dancers worthy of the roles they get (Iliushkina, Korneyev, Ionova) lack the spark and flare of young BT dancers. The Bolshoi might have some overrated dancers but they also have a TON of truly interesting young talent originating from both VBA and BBA with incredibly diverse styles.... Kokoreva, Trikoz, Efimov, Gerashchenko, Sevenard, Soares, Denisova, Poddubnyak are all memorable and extremely different from one another with wildly divergent strengths. I’m really interested in reading your comments on this, especially if you disagree with me.”
Well you have to look at where they trained.  The Mariinsky dancers you mentioned, with the exception of Nagahisa, trained at VBA.  VBA is not known for producing dancers with insane personality and excitement.  Then the Bolshoi dancers you mentioned, all but 2 trained at Bolshoi Academy, but even Geraschenko not only went to BBA for a bit, but also had Tsiskaridze who continues to engrain that personality into his students.  The same goes with Sevenard who also graduated under Tatiana Udalenkova, Renata Shakirova’s professor, and worked closely with Tsiskaridze.  Bolshoi Academy is known for engraining stage presence, personality, and unique styles into their students, that’s one of the biggest differences between the two schools.  I do honestly think that currently BBA is producing better students, but the style differences do have to do with their education.
“Confession: I hardly ever watch the Royal but Liam Scarlett’s production of Swan Lake...... galaxy brain if I may say so.”
I love so much of his production too.  There’s some I don’t like (the Swan tutus are horrific and wtf are those stupid headpieces), but all in all it’s one of my favorites too.
“If Tikhomirova was better at leading ballets, I would love to see a sequel of Don Q with her and Ruslan, street dancer and matador”
I mean, Tikhomirova does street dancer quite well.  I’m not sure what this ask is asking?

WOW. This is exciting. Khiteeva as Raymonda! Although this is the Primorsky stage, there's a clear pattern of dancers debuting here and then later debuting at the Mariinsky Stage. Also, it's exciting for the audiences to see “the Queen” Okasna Skorik along with upcoming dancers (Bulanova, Korneev.) I hope there are some videos posted of this. I haven't seen much of Khiteeva’s recent Don Quixote performances, nor her recent turn in Clemence — a role that is just so lyrical and crazy hard, which she dances beautifully.

Hello! I've been a lifelong ballet fan but only recently discovered that I can follow ballet all over the world online and on social media -- and I've become somewhat obsessed! A funny thing that I've recently I noticed is this: while the entire world of ballet is wrapped up The Nutcracker, the Paris Opera seems to have Swan Lake on the bill during the holiday season. Does the POB not do The Nutcracker?! Or is there another company in Paris that serves up the Christmas time confection? I can't help but think how Parisian and contrarian that they're snubbing a worldwide crowdpleaser, but maybe that's why the company is having such a hard time? On another note, I'm over here rooting for Alexander Khiteeva but haven't seen her featured much this season at Mariinsky, which makes me nervous. She's such a lovely dancer and I love how she moves.
I'm glad you're becoming more involved in the ballet community- welcome!! Glad to have you!
I see you have discovered just one of the issues at POB which has upset dancers and audience members alike: the programming. The repertoire selection and also timing of the schedule are baffling. I'm sure there are probably some smaller troupes and schools doing a Nutcracker but come on, they're not POB. There are certainly some companies who try to do a different ballet during the Christmas season but I generally think happier ballets tend to do better eg Sleeping Beauty or even Cinderella. Heck, I think Royal even tried Coppelia?
I am also rooting hard for the stunning Khiteeva...but I am also worried she's going to get buried badly after the next class of VBA girls join MT.
