Best Siblings Round 2: Dean & Del & Don (Until We Meet Again) vs Lan Xichen & Lan Zhan (The Untamed)

Dean & Del & Don: "I think those three deserve a spot in this list because their dynamic is SO very interesting. Don and Del have a maybe more classic relationship to each other, they are only a year apart, grew up together, and they are obviously very close despite how different they are. And then there is Dean, who just came back to live with them, whose shadow obviously loomed over them all their life, who is their older brother and isn’t sure he knows how to be, and they all have to adjust to the new dynamic at home this leads to. What makes them so good in my opinion is that they actively try to make this work, they *want* to be good siblings to each other. It’s sometimes clumsy or hesitant, it’s sometimes plain sweet (Del being heartbroken that Dean stops eating breakfast with them??), and it’s just very loving in the end."

Turtles Finds a Coping Mechanism: The Until We Meet Again Rewatches

I've been so committed to crushing through the Old GMMTV Challenge that I kind of didn't allow myself to think that life's blips and bloops would shake me from my pace.

Well, real life has SLAYED ME as of late, SLAYED ME, and as @lurkingshan has noted to me -- yes, there's a CERTAIN amount of dissonance for my watching UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN, OF ALL SHOWS, as a coping mechanism, but here we are. I wanted to copy @bengiyo and rewatch UWMA anyway as a means of preparing for New Siwaj's Absolute Zero, which will be premiering at the end of September -- a time when my life will be calm-ish (???) again -- so I decided to take the plunge to see if UWMA would be a salve to my frayed nerves. It is, it totally is.

So here's some stream of consciousness notes, quite unlike my usual comparative/analytical style, just to honor what a ridiculously fabulous show UWMA is. (In my OGMMTVC analyses, I don't always get to gush over the cute stuff anyway because my posts get so long, so I'm doing a little of that here, too, ha.)

I knew that as soon as I watched it the first time for the OGMMTVC that I desperately wanted to rewatch it, so I just gave myself the go-ahead to eat the leum kleun candy. I've already completed one rewatch and am well into a second rewatch -- this show is so damn good, and now that I know the beats much better, I'm just having a lot of fun seeing in-depth the little nuances I missed the first time.

1) On my first watch, I did not appreciate how clearly Pharm was into Dean from the very start. The way Pharm flips through the photos of Dean that Team sends him from the first beach trip; the photo of Dean eating Del's breakfast; the way Pharm looks at the Facebook photo of Dean holding up the leum kleun. And how Pharm reacts when he saves Dean's phone number in his phone -- that ENORMOUS grin. I knew a lot going in the first time about Pharm's blushing maiden approach and how he was gunshy with intimacy for so much of the show. But I forgot in those early episodes -- homeboy was really into his crush! Taking that secret photo in the library, etc. He acknowledged it pretty immediately -- especially in that whispered conversation Pharm has with Team and Manaow in their English class. I had also forgotten that the show began with Pharm possibly questioning his sexuality, but being solidly knowledgable that it was Dean that was causing him to catch feelings.

2) Speaking of that fleeting moment in the library: after having watched the entire series the first time around, and remembering that Dean had saved that very first Post-It that Pharm had used to write a quick note on the papers that Pharm gave back to Dean in the library in... episode 2? Pharm had originally erased his name on that Post-It. It didn't click with me until this rewatch that Dean was able to make out Pharm's erased name from that Post-It -- which caused Dean to save the note, and use it as reference in the very last scene of the series. So cute.

3) I finally took the time to read about Phra Aphai Mani, the prince of the legend that Dean and Pharm talk about in the aquarium. Remember how Pharm says to Dean that Pharm doesn't like players?

DUDES. HAVE YOU READ ABOUT PHRA APHAI MANI? I guess, like, yes, if you're gonna have a super-long epic poem, a lot of shit needs to happen, but Aphai just kept marrying WIFE AFTER WIFE! FOUR WIVES TOTAL! One ogress, one mermaid, and two maybe humans? A half-ogress son here, a half-mer/son THERE, prince of THIS, king of THAT. Homeboy's life was COMPLICATED! I'm all EXTREMELY SYMPATHETIC to chaos, but this takes the damn cake. (And maybe gives me a touch more context into what's happening with that second marriage in I Feel You Linger In the Air, without the actual monsters/mermaids.) (Oh man -- imagine the Only Friends version of Phra Aphai Mani.) (NO.)

4) The first time around, I kind of though that the bits about Alex hitting on Pharm were a little extraneous and maybe a touch unnecessary, à la New Siwaj's style. But after my first rewatch, I stopped thinking so, and I actually began to enjoy them -- not only for how ridiculous they are, but I also recognized that that was the first time in the show that we see Pharm establishing boundaries. Of course, we see Pharm in his blushing maiden era forming boundaries with his P'Deeeean. But the way he's very clear with Alex, putting up as many walls as necessarily, and being exact in his communication that he likes someone else and is VERY not into dating Alex -- Pharm showed clarity and strength there. While Dean clearly liked to care for Pharm and treat Pharm as his younger companion -- Pharm also had agency, and knew he owned his agency, and I liked how that agency was first demonstrated vis à vis Alex.

5) I totally forgot about this, but -- I think it was the second time they had breakfast together in Pharm's condo? the third? that scene where Pharm's wearing the yellow shirt and he drops the bowl -- remember when Pharm asks Dean if he's mixed-race? I don't think I still understand the meaning of that. I'm guessing Pharm is asking if Dean is Thai-Chinese? I want to think on this more, because -- in episode 16, when Pharm goes to his uncle's/grandpa's house, it is clear that the house is a Thai-Chinese household. There are banners with Chinese script on the walls. I wonder if that was meant to indicate that Pharm was under the impression that he himself (Pharm) was fully ethnic Thai -- but with his relationship to his dad's side of the family being more revealed, it would turn out that Pharm himself was also "mixed." I did think it was cute that Pharm said, "I like it" to Dean after Dean's answer -- another instance where Pharm was being clearly flirty, despite the whole blushing maiden thing.

6) I did not appreciate the first time around, how good Ohm Thitiwat's acting was in the car scene when he's processing Korn's suicide. At the end of the series, I was so taken by the condo scene that I failed to give props to other intense moments, and that car scene was one of them. When Dean arrives at the building where Pharm and Sin lived next to each other -- a part of me wondered if he had originally intended to visit Sin, before hesitating to knock on Pharm's door. I'm not sure, and I wasn't sure after this rewatch. But that was a hell of a recognition moment on the part of Ohm's acting, and it was really damn good. (In fact -- it was my thinking about that car scene, and my wanting to watch it again, that prompted these rewatches in the first place.)

7) It may have been a little confusing, but: I really liked that the Korn x Intouch flashbacks were never presented in chronological order. I liked that the show had Dean and Pharm piece together their dreams and nightmares to come to a collective understanding about the trajectory of Korn and Intouch's relationship, even before Dean receives the background information from Sin. I know I was always a little confused during my first watch as to what moment in time I was watching with Korn and Intouch, but I recognize now that that was a reflection simply of when Pharm and Dean were receiving the same information themselves -- and I liked that the viewer was going through the same process that Dean and Pharm were going through.

8) At the way beginning of the series -- episode 2, maybe? episode 3? -- I like that Dean slyly figures out where to park himself on campus to see Pharm coming out of class. This is before the electric transformer explosion. Dean already was so swayed by Pharm. So cute.

9) I think it first struck me as a touch weird that Manaow and Del (Dean's sister!) were the admins of the DeanPharm chat group. But now that I can think more about it -- I wonder if they were doing that maybe as a way to help Pharm through his hesitancy and protect him from the fans. That being said: one of my absolute favorite moments was when Del first leans about Dean's first sleepover at Pharm's condo -- the way she jumps up and down and tries to calm her smile down. I was CRAAACKING up.

10) Maybe it's because I'm Indian, and used to very large and complicated families, that the relationship between Dean being a part of Intouch's family and having Korn's spirit, and vice versa with Pharm, wasn't confusing to me. But what really got me during my first rewatch was: Fluke Natouch's just INCREDIBLE acting when Pharm first meets Intouch's sister/Dean's grandmother, and Intouch's niece/Dean's mother. When I first watched the scene of Pharm meeting Dean's grandmother, a number of friends commented on loving that scene as well. GOD. It struck me as hard the second time around as the first time. And I think I was even MORE moved the second time around to see Pharm meeting Dean's mother.

Dean's mother had to process a LOT in the moment that she met Pharm. She had to process that her son had a boyfriend, that that boyfriend was there in her house in the first place, and that she'd have to tell her husband (Dean's dad) that their son's boyfriend was sleeping over. AND, that was all BEFORE Pharm had his reaction to Dean's mom once he was finally awake and processing things again. And THEN, she knew that Dean HIMSELF would have to tell his dad the next day and ask for his blessing. Moms have to go through a lot (do I ever know that life), but that was a LOT for Dean's mom, and god, I just gained a new appreciation for those scenes and how Dean and Pharm managed the whole damn thing together. (Also, now that I've seen The Love of Siam, as well as, of course, KinnPorsche -- and, OH, Be My Favorite, too! Kob Songsit. LEGENDARY BL DAD!)

11) My initial flip-out on the condo scene still stands. During my rewatch, I rewound it, like... three times? Fuck, man. One of the BEST BL scenes, ever, ever.

12) I loved taking my time to watch the very final scene, when Dean and Pharm have had the same dream of Korn and Intouch thanking them, and they get back together. I really loved paying attention to how all the Post-Its came back, the meaning of Never Forget, all the little notes and memories of when they had first met. Intouch's ring, the very first note Pharm wrote to Dean, all of it. Dean was such a sentimental simp from the start.

(Because I'm on such a DeanPharm kick -- and I know this is against better advice, but -- I'm considering a fast watch of Between Us just to see DeanPharm's conclusion. I know! The side couples are supposed to be chaotic, but, but. Once I get more time.)

13) Last note. Again, when I have time again, I'm wanting to write a Big Meta on separation. I've noted in some of the most important GMMTV BLs, that separation is often a key theme. But I think Pharm asking for a break was also incredibly key, and keyed into his continued commitment to setting boundaries. I think I probably fell most for Pharm as a character with him doing this -- strange, I know, since I love DeanPharm incessantly, but his standing up for clarity for his feelings meant so much for the internal strength he had gained by surviving the ordeal they had gone through. He was going to stick to his guns to make sure the relationship was authentic FOR HIM, and he did just that.

GOD, THIS WAS CATHARTIC! If you read this, thanks for going through this with me! I'm addicted to writing and this was a fun break in the midst of life chaos. I promise the OGMMTVC will hopefully continue without interruption, but that being said -- I'm watching Not Me, slowly, and having a great time with it. But UWMA is my woobie at the moment, and I just love having fallen in love with this show.

Because I'll tell ya what, my brain has been OBSESSING over the idea of the two friend groups meeting. What a glorious mess it would be. Phum and Dean *might* dislike each other greatly. Wait no, would it be Win and Phum who dislike each other? Is Dean too above petty squabbles? Also Fai + Del = LURVE.

The answering of your partner's phone

Dean x Pharm : After a sorrowful night of past life flashbacks and sleep crying with supportive cuddles

We find our lovers cuddling and their phones side by side and Pharm being the more awake one, answered without checking who's phone he is grabbing. Who's calling?

Why, its Del, Dean's little sister and Co-Captain of the campus Dean/Pharm ship.

And while Dean is blissfully unaware, Pharm is having a panic and Del is off to inform Don of their brother's whereabouts.

Win X Team: After an emotional graveside breakdown and a dramatic and very unsafe drive in the rain via motorcycle

We see an awake Win who is making a very conscious decision to answer Team's phone (which considering who is calling, is probably the correct one). And who is calling?

It's none other than Team's mom....who knows who Win is. Team, I see you over there listening...

The parents are clearly on the SS Ally but we both know Win is now shitting bricks and Team is over there either amused or touched. Or a little bit of both. TIME TO MEET THE PARENTS Round Two.

I'm not surprised necessarily, but I am a bit surprised at the lead that Waan/Tul had....I'm still working on my full post about their relationship, but for funsies once that's done I might do a quick little series suggestion. Like a short little concept for the series as a whole with episode breakdowns. So for some more fun how about another poll... Who would you want to see for the second couple??

Now this is an interesting one since Cooheart does appear in Until We Meet Again, but since his character is dead....we could technically keep this acting pair together. No clear ideas for the couple dynamic/story.

We could pair Santa with a new actor, for this one I'm feeling that Wiew ends up going to college in Chonburi, maybe living with Waan, or in the hotel (which is a very specific trope that I really love for some reason). Love interest could be anything character wise, maybe another employee, maybe a fellow student, another long-term guest, who's to say??

Wiew/Don-Now I was hesitant, because I can't for sure get an idea of the age difference here, but seeing as Win and Dean are the same age, their brothers have to be fairly close in age. It's been a minute, but I think that Don is still in high school, but I could be wrong there. If so...maybe roommates to lovers while they're attending university together in Chonburi??

Entirely new couple, I'm seeing hotel employee romance, some workplace comedy vibes, maybe Tul does some matchmaking (honestly I can see that from Tul) while he's visiting Waan. I picked Fort and Oat for this because they're already signed to Wabi Sabi, but I do think they'd be a cute couple. They both had secondary roles in My Only 12%.

Finally, Del/?- So since we do love a connected story, we could bring Dean's sister into it, add a GL element, which is an idea I'm fond of. Del is still played by Pineare, and as her love interest I picked Aomsin, partly because she's also signed to Wabi Sabi, but also because she often has a badass vibe in her Instagram. I'm kind of thinking Del's going through a 'rebellious phase' she leaves school and gets a job at the hotel as like a holdover, kind of handed to her by her parents, since they have that connection (but she's still doing an excellent job, she takes pride in her work). Aomsin's character is someone she meets through work, she's out & proud, Del is intrigued by this very unapologetically herself person. She wants to get to know her. I'd personally stay away from gay panic and move more towards demiromantic/demisexual. Have this be the first time Del's had this more intense attraction toward anyone. I like the idea of juxtaposing the relationship of Waan/Tul (who in my head are two gays settled in their sexual identity) with Del in this new relationship, where you do have someone questioning, but not with the panic/fear.

So what do you think....to be honest, I think you could talk me into any of these with a good enough hook.

As much as I ADORE WinTeam (and overall BU), the series had so many flaws execution-wise. I couldn't get behind the new side couples. I didn't care about the Alphabet Gang or BeePrince and I also could've gone with TulWaan. I did love that Manaow got her own little mini storyline and I enjoyed the small tidbits of DeanPharm. Also the heat in Between Us was definitely top notch and was an excellent indicator for the progress of WinTeam's relationship growth.

UWMA holds a really special place in my heart. I found the InKorn storyline extremely triggering BUT UWMA was the best series I had watched in 2019. Like that series sent me on such an emotional rollercoaster and every ep left me exhausted but wanting more.

The soulmates thing really sucked me in, but also I just cherish DeanPharm so much. I also loved Team and Manaow and Del and Don. The plot was really interesting and held a lot of mystery alongside the drama. I loved DeanPharm's communication throughout the series.

As much as I love WinTeam (I really do), I'd choose UWMA over Between Us.

Best Siblings in BL - A Proposed List

I am incredibly excited for the Best Siblings in BL Bracket, it's hands down the one I had waited for the most. Consequently, I have submitted quite a few options and I am thinking why not share them all here. Consider this pre-propaganda for the ones that will be picked up for the bracket!

The ones I can see win this:

Yang and Tian from To Sir, With Love.

On paper, they had everything going against them: their respective mothers hate each other and try to turn them against each other, their father treats them unfairly differently, one of them is keeping a huge secret, the other falls for his brother’s fiancée … And yet!! they turn out to be the most loyal brothers we have ever seen in BL. They clearly adore each other, they protect each other and do whatever they can to make the other happy. Yang keeps Tian’s secret, encourages his hobbies and passions, and make sure he knows he’s loved, Tian defends Yang from their father, worries and fusses about him, and is always in his corner. They are simply wholesome and their love is top tier.

Minoru and Tane from Our Dining Table.

How could you not fall for the adorableness of this sibling duo? There is a huge age gap between Minoru and Tane, even further complicated by the fact that Minoru had to step up in taking care of his baby brother after their mother’s death. And yet, despite the difficulties the situation causes, both boys love each other so much. Even when Minoru is tired or frustrated, he always try to do his best by his brother. And Tane is just the sweetest (and most realistic tbh) little six years old I have ever had the joy to see in a BL. The scene where Tane babbles about poop curry and Minoru answers without listening until it finally clicks? peak sibling behavior.

Ton-hom and Long Pao from My Only 12%.

The two of them were fantastic older siblings to Seeiw. While he seemed a little closer to Ton-hom, they both always were there for him during the whole run of the story. They always looked out for him and took care of him, and it was obvious that he felt safe to tell them thing. They both provided comfort and gentle advice every time he needed it, helping him take responsibility for his mistakes but still ensuring he knew they were here for him. The gentleness that permeated through their relationship in every episodes really made them a strong contender for best siblings imo.

The underdogs I still would love to see go far:

Livy and Mikey from Rainbow Prince

The twins in Rainbow Prince have such a lovely, sweet relationship. They love and trust each other, and distance clearly hasn’t affected this. Also they share a beautiful duet song about how they’ll always be here for each other, and I think that has to count for something!

Kiw and Seuadao from My Secret Love

They were such quintessential little sisters, the both of them. They were bored with their older brothers’ antics in the way teen siblings often are, yet ultimately very invested in them working out and being happy. I’m sending them as a unit because the way they teamed up for/against their brothers was adorable – and they resemble each other a lot both in character and in their relationship to their respective brother.

Diao and Dao from Rakdiao

While they may not look like it at first glance, with their constant bickering and dramatic antics (hello sitcom writing), or the way Dao steamrolls her brother’s boundaries and Diao’s temper tantrums, they actually are quite a sweet pair of siblings. Diao came to live with his sister so she could keep her home after a breakup, and he worries that he may not be able to do so and will cause trouble for her. Dao wants he brother to find someone to build a family with, and even if she teases and mock a little, she worries when he gets in trouble and knows his worth. They do love each other, in their bizarre, over the top ways.

The ones I would really be happy to see win - the UWMA propaganda:

Dean, Don and Del Wongnate

Intouch and Ahn Chatpokin

The women in Intouch’s life love him very much, especially his older sister. In always trusts his sister with his secret, and Ahn while worrying for him, always protect and take care of him, and she never reconsider his role in the life of her daughter. She was already a teen when he came into her life, she sang to him when he cried as a babe and held him when he cried as a young man, she tried her best to shield him from their father, and she should never have had to bury her baby brother so young.

Korn, Krit and Kard Ariyasakul

Maybe the least focused on siblings of the show, I think they actually do deserve a place in that Best Siblings selection too. Korn, on top of everything going on with his father, always stand as a shield between his violence and his little brothers. He hates it, but he will sacrifice his dreams and aspirations so his brothers can follow theirs. And that love is entirely reciprocated, both Krit and Kard being here for him when their father hurt him, Krit ready to let go of his dream of becoming a cop to alleviate Korn’s burden, Kard naming his sons with the names both his brothers chose when they were young. Those three brothers loved each other so much, and my heart breaks every time I think of Krit, grown up and a father himself, telling Pharm "I don't have any brother left..."

I am, very obviously, missing a lot of really good siblings from really good shows, but those are the ones I love the most across all the shows I have seen. Can't wait to see everyone's submissions and reasons!

Hi Key, I feel like I dreamt this but I think i read somewhere that Between Us isn't going to have 16 episodes as MyDramalist suggests but that it's going to actually have 12. Do you know anything about that? And if you do, do you have a source?

I don’t have an official source, but people who attended the blessing event in July heard from New, I think, that it’ll be twelve episodes.

It makes sense that it’ll be shorter than UWMA’s 17 episodes since UWMA had five couples and a whole exceedingly intricate family history to explore. From what I can tell, BU mostly focuses on WinTeam with WanTul (Win’s older brother and one of Win’s classmates) as a secondary pairing, the swim club members (like the trio in Team’s year nicknamed ABC), and Win’s younger brother View.

OhmFluke are reprising their roles as DeanPharm, but apparently they’re only set to film a few times, and Ohm’s already gone once on his own for the training camp scenes. We know DeanPharm’s story already, so we probably won’t see much of them. I don’t know about ManaowPruk but I wouldn’t bet on getting a lot of of them either. Del’s not in it, neither are InKorn, nor SinSorn, nor any of the adults, since they’re DeanPharm and InKorn’s family.

So unless they increased the number of episodes or someone misreported the number, looks like we’re getting 12!

Once again thinking about how Dean spent his entire childhood seperated from his parents and siblings for the most part and he basically ends up living with people who are almost strangers to him once his grandma dies and how much it must've been a relief to be able to make that step with the help of Pharm to get to know Don and Del better and to be a better big brother and to overall just feel like he has a proper place in his family. In this essay I'll-
