20 Questions: Writer’s Edition
tagged by the beloved @myrmidryad
this is a LONG one so here’s a cut to avoid do you love the colour of the sky syndrome
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
101 after a recent purge... no one may know about my Past
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
329004! used to be about 350k but again... purge
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
on ao3 i’ve written for (chronologically) doctor who, skyfall, discworld, les mis, star trek, lord peter wimsey, marvel (various), in the flesh, red vs blue, roosterteeth rpf, check please, hockey rpf, star wars, daredevil, rivers of london, dishonored, emmerdale, dirk gently, holby city, hot fuzz, kj charles, guardian, the covert captain, taskmaster rpf, good omens, ghosts, roswell new mexico, leverage, schitt’s creek, the magicians, 9-1-1, it chapter two, the magnus archives, the old guard, the mandalorian, the ritual, the locked tomb
way back on the pit of voles i wrote for twilight, harry potter, hetalia and xmen first class. and on the newsround chatrooms i wrote exclusively harry potter fic about my oc neville and luna’s daughter
as you can tell i am not prone to staying in one fandom writing wise, i tend to end up with one complete fic and seven abandoned wips concealed deep in my google drive
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
finally see what it means to be living (captain marvel, carol/maria, i really hit the zeitgeist with this one i think i was something like the fifth fic in the ship tag)
do whatever you think (the magnus archives, this series is actually #2-7, then #8 #9 and #11 for me so i’m going to cheat a bit)
standing in a world of my own (daredevil, matt/foggy/karen, another zeitgeist hit! really miss writing for daredevil actually... it’s a perennial fave)
a winding road that stretches towards the truth (iron man, tony/rhodey, i STILL don’t know when this got so many kudos. i swear i looked away when it was at 100 and suddenly it ended up here)
where the long shadows grow (star trek aos, kirk prime/spock prime, thank god some people are checking the prime kirkspock tag is all i’m saying!)
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
i don’t really Do angsty endings... possibly a blanket of stars just because i ended it on something of a cliffhanger and then completely zoned out of rnm for long enough that i forgot where i was going with it. there was definitely the intention of fixing things but then i just... did not do that. and now the show is on s3 and i’m over a season behind! life comes at you fast
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
where the long shadows grow, because it reunited kirk prime and spock prime and they DESERVE TO BE HAPPYYYY. i’m a complete sucker for presumed dead/back from the dead stories, actually, so on a similar theme i have two (TWO) daredevil fics which follow the trope, one about ray coming back post-s2 (might never be normal again) and one about foggy and matt reuniting post-endgame (in the corner, taking up space). this is the only time i will ever acknowledge endgame ever again
7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?
i do write crossovers! in fact i am often roundly mocked by my friends for the increasingly esoteric nature of my crossovers. way back in secondary i wrote a twilight/labyrinth crossover where angela was sarah and jareth’s daughter  because i had a massive crush on a girl who liked both twilight and labyrinth. however, since that has been comprehensively scrubbed from the internet, i think my craziest crossover is probably part three of ‘traced upon the skies’, already an esoteric crossover of rivers of london and hot fuzz, when i added in a crossover with the horror movie ‘the ritual’ just because i wanted rafe spall’s character to be happy
8. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
EXTREMELY rarely and only with extreme embarrassment. i will not be any more specific than that
9. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
i used to really struggle with doing this, to the point that i had over 300 comments just. lingering in my inbox unanswered. so i decided to give those up and just commit to answering them from then on, which has been working fairly well for about a year and a half now. i love getting comments but i get overwhelmed really easily and struggle with replying in a way which feels meaningful without getting in my head about it!
10. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
yes lmao it was for a harry potter fic on ff.net where harry got sorted into hufflepuff instead of gryffindor. it wasn’t a very good fic but i think the fact it was clearly written by an 11 year old should have scared off at least some of the less flattering comments.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
i don’t... think so? i don’t know how i’d find out to be honest, my vanity googling is rarely very effective
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes! as bronze may be much beautified (skyfall, mallory/bond) got translated into chinese, i was extremely pleased. i think it’s mandarin but the ao3 page for the translation doesn’t say and my mandarin is.................. extremely poor
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
also yes! me and jess little-smartass have written a lot together, although only our star trek/les mis series has been published, more’s the pity. we spent a lot of les mis fandom time workshopping aus and we were always extremely correct about all of it, imo
14. What’s your all time favourite ship to write for?
oh god. i think probably kirk/spock, although there’s some recency bias to that since i reread space manhattans recently and was reminded of my love for them. i really like writing jon/martin but i’ve mostly done that from outsider pov which is a bit different to writing shipfic, i think. joe/nicky from tog was also something i really liked writing but i struggle with plotting longer fic with them
15. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
i recently went through my abandoned fic folder so i actually have a few options for this. the obvious choice would be ‘any of the hockey ones’ but i did delete most of those just for my sanity. more recently i started writing a vaguely smutty pre-the thing mac/fuchs fic for alex @milkdrinker5000 which i really WANT to finish but am struggling with. most obscure answer (even beyond the thing) and most likely to remain unfinished is the insanely in depth post-tog booker/copley fic i had planned out back in about october. i wrote a good 6-7k of that one and then i realised it was going to be, like, difficult, and decided if i was going to put that much work into something it may as well be the novel im meant to be writing
16. What are your writing strengths?
once a friend told me i had an excellent facility for dialogue and ive thought about it every time i write ever since. i love writing dialogue and i think i’m good at knowing what sounds ic and what is right out.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
one of the things i struggled with for a really long time, and honestly still have trouble with, is depicting action in words. once i wrote a hockey fic which featured multiple hockey games and i spent probably four times as much effort editing those to make sense and be interesting that i’ve ever done on a talkier scene.
18. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
i’ve done it but only when i knew more or less what i was talking about - i did italian at school so i felt confident using it for nicky in something particular and real. i try not to italicise when i drop in words from other languages, which is what i usually do when i’m using a language i haven’t studied in depth (for example, joe’s use of arabic in some of my fic), and to only use words which i’ve heard used by native speakers in that context. i think if you don’t feel confident using another language, generally speaking, you shouldn’t do it. and for god’s sake don’t use google translate for a full sentence
19. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
harry potter on the newsround chatboards. ariana lovegood-longbottom my sweet child
20. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
this used to be an easy question because hands down the fic i was proudest of on posting it was i’ll be seeing you. i spent a year and a half on research and writing! but these days i do cringe a little at my hockey fic, and i think i’m prouder of some of my shorter works. let’s do a curveball and say layer on layer, down on down, which is my favourite of my rnm fics and the one i like most from a narrative voice perspective. getting michael right was stressful and i’m still proud i got it down for a TIME LOOP FIC, my absolute favourite trope
tagging @little-smartass and @leescoresbies just in case they want to try this

FusionFall Bases and Outposts Headcanons: Candy Cove
Those of you who’ve been following these posts have probably already seen where I’ve talked about Candy Cove being one of the more secretive outposts for the Fusion Fighters.  As such, I may end up repeating a few points, but I’ll go more in-depth on the base itself below:
Though small, the outpost is considered one of the more important locations to the war effort because of its use for secure trade/travel between the city and the suburbs, with access to the ocean and the Cul-De-Sac following the creek. Outside of the felled ship, the Sweet Revenge, the location also remains largely untouched by Fusion Matter with few fusion monsters roaming the area, also making it safer than most other locations as well.
The outpost is split into two zones connected by the creek--the candy pirate camp and the actual cove itself, where the SKWID squad often leads it’s own operations--with sentries stationed in-between them to keep the Candy Buccaneers at bay.
Stickybeard acts as Candy Cove’s commanding officer.  Initially, not everyone was thrilled about it--specifically KND members--due to his long history as a villain.  However, his previous experience as a captain and his boisterous personality won over many quickly: He really is a good leader and many of those under his command respect him, and he in turn backs his ‘crew.’  He does still occasionally bicker with the SKWID squad, but many of them have even come to respect him over time even if they won’t admit it and stay warry.
The SKWID squad kept away from the camp initially due to their conflict with Stickybeard, but it’s also largely because their operations still focus on issues concerning the ocean/undersea missions, therefore keeping them farther out along the coast.  After witnessing how Fuse destroyed many of the waterways in the Darklands, they’re determined not to let him contaminate the ocean on the homefront. They're sometimes helped by the KND’s Deep Sea Science Lab, whose reconstruction was pushed further after the KND lost contact with the Moon Base.
Since the outpost is pretty secure and out of sight from most of Fuse’s army, it’s a good location for trading information and such without letting him pick up on any of the Fusion Fighter’s plans or battle strategies.
To keep it secure and limit unnecessary attention, only a select group of Fusion Fighters are stationed there at any time.  It’s pretty much exclusively run by the SKWID squad and candy pirates; however, Stickybeard’s not above pulling favors if someone wants to be stationed there so long as they’re willing to work hard. He’ll hand out missions just to go have people gather up lost candy and in return people can relax at the cove for a while. (While not much goes on, it is pretty peaceful there, so these types of favors end up being handed out more often than not.)
The main requirement for people stationed there is that they can’t really complain about having to “rough it” for a while.  As close as Candy Cove is to the suburbs, the outpost’s focus on secrecy means staying put and out of sight.  A person could get bored quick and tech is limited only to necessities, so anyone there better really like the beach and camping, because that’s about all they’ll have anything to do with for extended periods of time. Outside of sentry duty, the day-to-day stuff consists of handling trade, undersea research, and relaying secret transmissions. Periods allotted outside of the base are often reserved for deliveries and passing along info in-person--so enjoy them when you can and bring back some snacks and something for the others to do when you return.
Yes, you can bribe Stickybeard easily with candy. The same goes for pretty much everyone else there. Being ‘the snack guy’ we’ll make you an instant favorite at the base.
In an effort to take his ship back, sometimes Stickybeard will assign people to suppress or find a way to remove the Fusion Matter infecting it.  Thus far, it’s a failing effort, but it doesn’t seem to be expanding at too extreme a rate to be an immediate danger.

Survival Game Fractured Veil Allows 500 Players On Future Hawaii
Tumblr media
After reaching the Kickstarter goal, the survival title Fractured Veil will release in 2022 and can permit up to 500 players within the game on just one occasion. Fractured Veil, a multiplayer survival game by first-time developer Paddle Creek Games, has met its initial Kickstarter funding goal and is about to release on Steam Early Access in 2022. The Kickstarter will continue until October 7, 2021; the developer plans to announce more stretch goals shortly. Assail the island of Maui 100 years within the future; Fractured Veil will have up to 500 players on one map. The unique setting helps the game stand among its competitors. The "veil" referenced within the title refers to a teleportation system that failed catastrophically 50 years within the past and opened portals to other dimensions. Many of the enemies within the game will be humans and animals from these alternate worlds, alongside cannibalistic mutants that appeared across Hawaii within the years following the fracture because the catastrophe is understood within the game world. Crafting, base-building, and both PvP and PvE combat will be present within the game, and like other recent survival titles, players will be ready to team with other survivors at any time. According to Gamespress, Paddle Creek Games has already met it's initial $100,000 and can soon add more stretch goals to its campaign. Currently, the sole goals past the initial funding of the game are for furniture and decorations at $110,000 and a totem spear gun weapon at $120,000. Backers who have already donated to the project have secured rewards like exclusive skins, wallpapers, and Steam Keys to be used for the game when released in Early Access. Although the developer refers to the game as an MMO, it's stated that PvP won't be a requirement within the game, and there'll be zones where players cannot fight one another. Fractured Veil will also feature cross-server travel, explained in-game as transportation between multiverses, allowing players to seek new items and knowledge of unique biomes and weather patterns. The ultimate release will include an AI drone that will stream the game live to Twitch and Youtube 24 hours per day, allowing fans to ascertain what's happening on the island at any time. Survival games have proven to be popular, to the purpose that older games like Skyrim are modded into the genre. Fractured Veil won't be the primary game of its type to return out, but it appears to refine many of the mechanics that have contributed to the success of its predecessors. Fractured Veil has great potential to attract a good range of players if it can solve common complaints of the genre like unhealthy player interactions and unintuitive, frustrating combat. The inclusion of its fascinating lore and deep worldbuilding makes it easy to ascertain why it already reached its initial funding goal and indicates that the title features a bright future before it. Fractured Veil will release for PC in 2022 Source: Gamespress Read the full article

Where to live in Atlanta in 2020
Tumblr media
Your go-to guide for picking the best neighborhood in the ATL right now
What makes for a best Atlanta neighborhood? That’s subjective in a thousand different ways, but what’s indisputable is that Atlantans of all stripes need to be smart about locational choices or risk getting passed by in a city on the move.
What’s paramount in your buying or renting decision? Access to Atlanta transit? Walkability to a nice cozy tavern—or seven of them? Room for guests to park? Space for the in-laws? A flowery yard? Absolutely no yardwork whatsoever? A social scene that never quits? Or a home away from it all, where you can enjoy quiet summer nights in the yard, symphonic with the sound of cicadas?
Highlighted below are seven eclectic options picked from more than 240 neighborhoods officially recognized by the city of Atlanta, diverse in geography, architecture types, general price points, and demographics. But each neighborhood below offers the culture and convenience that only living intown provides, and their appeal is growing by the minute— you’ll find new housing stock, surging restaurant scenes, and freshly minted sections of the Beltline.
Whether for an empty-nester, first-time buyer, transplant from afar, or longtime renter who likes it that way, these neighborhoods offer an opportune place—one that’s quintessentially Atlanta—for thriving in 2020.
Summerhill
The draw: Diverse; steeped in local history; lower cost of living than its eastside counterparts
Similar neighborhoods: Peoplestown; Old Fourth Ward (circa 2006)
Types of homes: Everything from adorable shotguns to hulking contemporaries
Within a football’s toss of what’s become Georgia State Stadium, Summerhill is blowing up like few other places in Atlanta right now—with all the gentrification challenges inherent in such transformative development. Most notably, the depressing dead zone that was the storefront carcasses of Georgia Avenue—which had housed a diverse slate of grocers, restaurants, and spaces for butchers and shoe shops in the early 20th century—is being restored to vibrancy with the likes of Wood’s Chapel BBQ, Junior’s Pizza, and Halfway Crooks Beer, among others. By all indications, that’s just the beginning.
Within a few blocks, nearly 1,000 new multifamily residences are in the pipeline or have recently opened near the repurposed Major League Baseball stadium and its barren lots. Elsewhere, just north of the stadium, Aloft is planning to build its first hotel south of Interstate 20, and Georgia State is moving forward with an $85 million convocation center where the school’s basketball team would play. But only a fraction of the new housing has been earmarked as “affordable,” as determined by the earnings of residents in the area, in a district that’s been considered low-income for generations.
Renovated standalone homes costing north of a half-million dollars aren’t uncommon, while new construction routinely aims for higher prices. A national builder is erecting nearly 300 apartments near the neighborhood’s northern border, I-20, with each of them deemed “luxury.” On the transportation front, Atlanta’s first rapid bus transit project is planned for a three-mile circuit that would travel from downtown, through Summerhill, to the Beltline’s Southside Trail. Summerhill stands to be a substantially different place in coming years, for better or worse.
Buckhead Village
The draw: Car-free oasis with ritzy shops and restaurants
Similar neighborhoods: Midtown’s core
Types of homes: A mecca of high-end, sophisticated new condos and apartments
This is the trendy, walkable, hip, and some would argue pretentious section of Atlanta’s most monied neighborhood, located near the heavily commercial area around Peachtree Road’s split with Roswell Road. New (not cheap) housing options and restaurants have multiplied in recent years, but relatively affordable deals can still be found (though rarely at Jimmy Choo).
One of several new Buckhead Village apartment high-rises, for goodness’s sake, is actually called “Gentry,” and at the posh, glassy edifice that is Hanover Buckhead Village, studios of barely more than 600 square feet will set you back $1,837 monthly—or more. Still, that’d be peanuts compared to most mortgage notes at The Charles, a deluxe condo building at the coveted crossroads of Peachtree and East Paces Ferry roads. The Village is Exhibit A that Buckhead exclusivity, like enhanced walkability, doesn’t come cheap—unless you’re willing to look deeper and compromise a little.
So why pay the steep prices? Where else in Atlanta can you browse at Hermès, nosh at a white-tablecloth destination like Le Bilboquet, and catch a show at a landmark venue like Buckhead Theatre within a few blocks and without a car? And it’s not all bad; smaller condos that enjoy the same geographic benefits can routinely be found for less than $250,000.
Beyond the shopping and swanky flats, Charlie Loudermilk Park is a green respite amid the village’s commercial buzz. (Trivia: It was once the site of Henry Irby’s General Store, the man widely regarded as Buckhead’s founder.) And ATL newcomers might be surprised to learn that, where the village’s upscale outdoor shopping district stands, an estimated 100 bars and restaurants once thumped deep into the night, until general rowdiness and one very high-profile crime helped the city accelerate their demise.
Westview
The draw: Neighbors old and new who take pride in having so much pride
Similar neighborhoods: Adair Park; West End
Types of homes: Quintessential Atlanta bungalow or quaint cottages with Tudor flair
With smokin’-hot real estate for the past several years (thanks, Beltline buzz), this historic, diverse, and formerly downtrodden (thanks, Great Recession) neighborhood along the Westside Trail has shown anecdotal signs of cooling off recently, although bidding wars for choice properties are still a thing. Buyer incentives (closing costs paid, etc.) that seemed unthinkable not long ago have returned. Locals have also recently argued that the Westside Trail hasn’t yet lived up to its hype as an accelerant for outside investment—while others are grateful it hasn’t yet been the gentrifying tool for displacement many had feared. But it’s still early.
While Westview home sales in the $400,000s are commonplace these days, cheaper renovations with charm to knock your socks off are still out there for significantly less. The City of Atlanta counts about 1,100 single-family homes in the neighborhood, with a strong majority of them now classified as being in “good” condition. And Westview remains that increasingly rare Atlanta neighborhood where buyers hankering to live in their own fixer-upper might not be bullied out by deep-pocketed investors and moneybag flippers.
Throw in the 600-acre, gorgeous Westview Cemetery (the Southeast’s largest), access to the Beltline’s Westside Trail, and the One Night Stand (burger) at Slutty Vegan, and you might never leave.
East Atlanta
The draw: Great nightlife; affordable among its more northerly eastside brethren
Similar neighborhoods: Reynoldstown; Edgewood
Types of homes: Flashy townhomes; modest brick ranches; a few grand Victorian stalwarts
Longtime locals talk wistfully of the days when the East Atlanta Village had more gritty soul, or when a Craftsman-style cottage could be scored for the price of a used Tesla. But the scrappy spirit of this nabe, immortalized by artists like Gucci Mane and Camila Cabello, lives on. Added bonus: Plans are percolating to rework an East Atlanta intersection so notorious and nonsensical—the cockeyed Moreland/Glenwood Avenue crossroads—it inspired a Hawaiian artist to spotlight it in a book.
Like its cousin to the north, Little Five Points, EAV retains an anything-goes vibe and numerous watering holes that can get pleasingly rowdy (Midway Pub) if the right game is on. That’s despite the ubiquity of new townhomes and single-family houses selling high into the $600,000s these days.
Still, a max budget of, say, $300,000 scores a perfectly livable little house within hoofing distance of the bars and eats. Renting a well-equipped newer studio here—just a short drive from downtown on Interstate 20—could save $500 or more monthly versus Midtown and Buckhead.
Knight Park/Howell Station
The draw: Knowing the names of everybody on your leafy little street
Similar neighborhoods: Home Park; East Atlanta
Types of homes: Traditionals from recent decades commingle with old, revived bungalows
A diminutive, charming oasis of vernacular architecture and close-knit neighbors among the industrial Westside landscape, Knight Park/Howell Station stands around the corner from the gorgeous new Proctor Creek Greenway and the initial phase of what's projected to be Atlanta’s largest green space, Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry.
Last year, a Beltline spur trail that’s set to serve the historic neighborhood launched pre-construction clearing efforts. Also announced: a 15-acre warehouse conversion into an office and retail hub. The Knight Park green space is considered the district’s communal heart, but the Goliath park project across the road stands to really put this place on the map.
Located just a stone’s throw west of Midtown, fewer than 300 houses comprise the full neighborhood—or less than half as many as wee Cabbagetown. The neighborhood also has roots in the railroad industry dating back to the 1890s, with a National Register of Historic Places designation coming a century after that. The housing stock is almost exclusively standalone residences, ranging from rehabbed cottages in the low $200,000s, to more ornate bungalows and Craftsman-style offerings from the aughts edging over the half-million-dollar mark.
Piedmont Heights
The draw: A feeling of being tucked away, in the middle of it all
Similar neighborhoods: Morningside-Lenox Park; Peachtree Hills
Types of homes: High-dollar new construction; handsome brick townhomes; garden-style condos
An icicle-shaped neighborhood bounded by Piedmont Avenue, Interstate 85, and the former railroad line that cuts through Piedmont Park, Piedmont Heights is under-appreciated. This tony neighborhood is a segue between trendy Midtown and the old/new money of Buckhead, with enviable proximity to Piedmont Park and all the scuzzy wonders of Cheshire Bridge Road. Its roster of attractions includes venerable Smith’s Olde Bar and Ford Fry’s Little Rey, plus a stock of truly lovely, smaller houses that can be attained in the ballpark of $500,000.
There is history aplenty; Atlanta’s second-oldest home—the Liddell House, a classic, clapboard-sided antebellum farmhouse with a porte cochère—is located on Montgomery Ferry Road. But for all its aspirational residences and marquee location, not every Atlantan could point out Piedmont Heights on a map, which boosts the cachet.
Bonus: Piedmont Heights is getting its own Beltline segment—a stretch of the Northeast Trail, behind the neighborhood’s Ansley Mall—that launched construction last fall. The result should be a combination of Beltline and interstate access second only to West End and Reynoldstown. And locals know not to miss Grindhouse Killer Burgers, which opened its “flagship” location here on Piedmont Avenue in 2011.
Underwood Hills
The draw: A happy medium between Midtown’s bustle and the spacious lots of Collier Hills
Similar neighborhoods: Loring Heights; Ormewood Park
Types of homes: Large, older condos and Colonials
The construction of I-75 couldn’t dampen the charm of this neighborhood of about 1,000 homes that occupies the middle ground between hip, postindustrial Blandtown and manicured Margaret Mitchell. Established in 1902, Underwood Hills’s earliest denizens were employees of the Seaboard Coastline Railroad, and that railroad tradition lives on, just to the west. Today, Underwood Hills isn’t shy about adopting the “Upper Westside” moniker coined by developers as a marketing tactic for the general area northwest of Atlantic Station. Less trendy is Underwood Hills Park, a tucked-away gem with tennis and basketball courts and more than enough equipment to keep the kiddos happy.
Large-scale ventures such as Selig Enterprises’s The Works—a planned 80-acre adaptive-reuse redo that’s landed a Scofflaw brewing facility and food hall from celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern—promise to boost the district’s appeal in the popular consciousness of Atlantans. Meanwhile, patrons of Hankook Taqueria and Atlanta Brewing Company may have previously visited Underwood Hills without knowing it.
Large, older, but well-kept condo complexes make Underwood Hills a go-to for first-time homebuying, with renovated options in the low $100,000s fairly common. (Just don’t expect much more than 700 square feet.) Meanwhile, a concentration of Colonial-style dwellings help the streets stand out aesthetically in bungalow-heavy Atlanta. Recent sales in the latter style show three-bedroom houses moving in the $400,000 to $500,000 range.

MEDICINAL HOPS FOR HEALTH BENEFITS
Tumblr media
by Crooked Bear Creek Organic Herbs
While we know it best for the bitter flavour it imparts to beer, we celebrate hops as an increasingly valuable herbal medicine – and as the 2018 International Herb of the Year.
Step into a hop field and you will witness a gorgeous feat of herbal engineering. Whether flourishing in towering lush columns or luxuriously sprawled on garden trellises, Humulus lupulus displays strength and beauty. Pungent and sharp, hops’ unique bouquet creates an impression, while its remarkable medicinal properties have stood the test of centuries. It’s no wonder that The International Herb Association has chosen hops as 2018’s Herb of the Year.
Garden Growth
Many folks are surprised to learn that Humulus lupulus is a member of the Cannabinaceae family, a small group of aromatic flowering plants that includes the cannabis genus. Both share some similar sedative characteristics; however, hops have a much milder effect. Native to Northern Europe, hops was widely cultivated for beer brewing, with England’s southeastern region once the largest exporter. An introduced species to Scotland and Ireland hops now thrives in most countries throughout the northern hemisphere, Asia, and Australia.
Growing from a stout branched root, Humulus is a hardy perennial and vigorous climber, reaching at least 20 feet in a growing season. Its fibrous yet flexible stems contain downward-pointing bristles that facilitate its twining growth, placing hops in the category of “bine” instead of a vine. Rough and stalked, its dark-green serrated leaves are heart-shaped and often lobed. Lower leaves are opposite; upper leaves exhibit single or alternate leaf patterns.
Being dioecious {male or female}, both plants are needed for pollination. Female plants produce catkins or strobiles one-and-a-quarter-inch lovely, yellow-green oblong bracts with papery overlapping scales. Inside these bracts, glands hold powdery, golden pollen containing lupulin, the source of hop’s bitter character. Hops are harvested at summer’s end for brewing and medicine.
Hops prefer partial to full sun and deep rich soil, growing in Zones 5-10. Plant them in rows 7-8 feet apart, training the bines to climb lines or other supported structures. Cut back bines to the ground every fall after harvest. If you’re cultivating it for home use, be careful. Hops are very invasive.
Hops in History
The name Humulus lupulus is believed to originate from humus {rich soil} and lupulus, from the Latin lupus, meaning wolf. Its common name hops derive from the Anglo-Saxon hoppan, meaning “to climb.”
Scientists discovered its distinct yellow pollen in excavated prehistoric sites in Britain, revealing its use by ancient people. Hops grew in popularity over the centuries, in part because of medieval beer brewers, who began using the strobiles in the 19th-century. Before hops, brewers used “gruit,” a mix of bitter aromatic herbs such as mugwort, ground ivy, dandelion, and wormwood to flavor their ale. When brewers discovered that hops preserved the ale while imparting a pleasant flavor, they soon began to replace these other herbs. Rumours also circulated that some gruit contained hallucinogenic, aphrodisiacal herbs {perhaps due to the thujone content found in wormwood}, while hops tended to quell the male libido, making it “safer” to consume. By the 14th-century, brewers used hops almost exclusively. The rest of northern Europe adopted this practice, sparking the large-scale cultivation of hops that still exists today.
Hops were not without its detractors, however. Henry VI and Henry VIII both banned it, calling it a “wicked weed that spoils the taste of the drink and endangers the people.” Hildegard von Bingen wrote that hops were “not very useful in benefiting man because it makes melancholy grow and weighs down his inner organs.”
Despite its critics, hops were well-established for centuries as a medicinal herb, serving as a treatment for a myriad of symptoms. Medicinal beers or “draughts” were brewed with hops and other herbs to ease pain and settle nerves and digestion. In 1653, Nicholas Culpepper recommended hops for the “heat of the liver and stomach” as well as for skin infections and headache. In England, they combined it with bread to make a poultice for stubborn sores and ulcers. Pillows of hops were prescribed to guide some of our most distinguished world leaders off to dreamland, including King George III and Abraham Lincoln.
English and Dutch colonists brought European hops to North America in 1629, where Native American tribes were already using our wild species, Humulus lupulus var. lupuloides in warm poultices for an earache and dental pain, and to ease the discomfort of pneumonia. A tea from the blossoms provided sedation and relief from intestinal pain, fever, and urinary disorders.
The United States Pharmacopoeia {1831-1916} listed hops as a treatment for anxiety, but it was used for almost every ill: as an external poultice to relieve chest colds, internally for bronchitis, and inhaled for sore throats. Mixed with lobelia and thornapple {Datura stramonium or jimsonweed} it remedied constipation. As a tea, it relieved headaches, menstrual pain, indigestion, and cystitis. A hops mouthwash targeted thrush, and flannels dipped in a hot infusion served as a compress for mumps. More strangely, people applied hops in heated bags to the wrists and feet to sweat fevers and sometimes fried it in lard to apply if for breast pain.
Hops Stranger Side
For generations, folk remedies included hops. It was believed that placing a hops-filled pillow under your bed would alleviate rheumatism, and women wore an amulet bag filled with hops around the neck to prevent morning sickness. One interesting custom suggested visiting a hops vine for seven consecutive mornings and biting the end of a shoot to cure epilepsy.
Traditional lore associated hops with sleep, dreams, and protection against bewitchment. Often people blamed malevolent forces and night visitations for their interrupted sleep and nightmares, and hops-filled pillows yet again came to the rescue, sometimes combined with other sedative herbs to promote peaceful sleep and ward off night terrors. Mothers would wash nursery room floors with a strong infusion of hops to help fussy children sleep through the night. Burning the herb at night also served to ward off evil spirits. Mixing hops and calendula flowers in a pillow would grant the sleeper dreams of lucky numbers. Combined with other “dreamy” herbs like mugwort and lavender, hops could stimulate vivid imagery and promote dream recall. In Celtic folklore, hops were connected to the wolf spirit, used to both conjure and tame this wild energy.
Modern Medicine
If beer makes you sleepy, blame it on the hops. Its soporific, nervine effect is a go-to remedy when nothing else works for stubborn insomnia. Hops relax the whole nervous system, calming anxiety, stress, and even nervous digestive disorders, thanks to its components humulone and lupulone, which mimic the active chemical in valium. In 2013, a study from the Indian Journal of Pharmacology found that hops combined with valerian and passionflower had an equal effect on sleep latency {the amount of time it takes to fall asleep}, sleep length, and night-waking as zolpidem [AAmbien}. And it’s considered a safe short-term alternative.
Digestion:
Aromatic and bitter hops is a classic digestive remedy. Because it stimulates gastric juices, it promotes healthy appetite and assimilation, while its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties relax the smooth muscles to ease painful gas and cramping, especially when associated with anxiety. This bitter property also makes it an excellent hepatic, increasing the flow of bile and toning the liver, encouraging optimal function. Traditionally, a cold infusion of hops was taken one hour before a meal to activate absorption, and sherry steeped in hops created a superb vintage digestif.
Hops’ antibacterial and antiseptic properties have been a proven, time-honoured remedy in eradicating intestinal parasites in humans and livestock.
Hormone Balance:
A 2016 study conducted by the midwifery department of Tabriz University in Iran confirmed the traditional use of hops for hormonal difficulties. A randomised placebo control group used to evaluate Humulus extract on menopausal symptoms found that women taking the extract had significantly fewer hot flashes than women in the placebo group. Researchers concluded that hops can be an effective treatment for early menopausal symptoms.
Yet these hormonal virtues aren’t limited to women. Preliminary research in Germany discovered that the flavanoid called xanthohumol found in hops blocks testosterone, thought to be a contributing factor in the onset of prostate cancer, prompting further investigation.
Pain Relief:
Less well known are the anodyne {pain-relieving} qualities of hops. Myrcene, humulene, and caryophyllene, the primary terpine properties in the herb, work together to provide anti-inflammatory and analgesic action. Combined with valerian, hops has made its way into traditional cough syrups to alleviate pain and calm spasmodic coughs that can accompany colds, flu, and allergies. Hops may be used internally and externally as a poultice or compress to soothe the inflammation and discomfort from cramps {including menstrual cramping}, and the pain of arthritis, earaches, and dental issues.
Wound Healing and More:
Topically, a hops poultice effectively alleviates chronic skin inflammations, mild wounds, ringworm, eczema, and painful swelling. In 2014, researchers found that the bracts of the hops strobile contain antioxidants that inhibit the dental bacteria responsible for cavities and gum disease. Recently, hops has become a trendy addition to natural deodorants for eliminating odour-causing microbes.
Essential Oil of Hops:
Sharp, bitter, earthy, and the hints of citrus, essential oil {EO} of hops is intriguing. The terpines concentrated in the oil create a highly antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, sedating, and pain-relieving action. For inhalation, hops EO works best when diffused, calming nerves, insomnia, and respiratory issues. To boost its effectiveness on sleeplessness, apply several drops to your pillowcase. For topical pain relief or to alleviate skin irritations, add a few drops to a soothing salve, carrier oil, or unscented lotion. Because its fragrance may not appeal to everyone, hops blends well with citrus oils, balsams, pines, nutmeg [also excellent for insomnia}, and spicy scents.
Hops Flower Essence:
To those needing a boost of self-esteem, youthful energy, and balance, hops flower essence imparts its exuberance and robust “personality.” Hops renew enthusiasm for living, creativity, new ideas, and travel while keeping one focused and centred. Great for overactive, frenetic minds, the herb helps to corral scattered energy, providing a feeling of control. Hops flower essence is wonderful for adults and adolescents who experience chronic over-stimulation, but also fatigue caused by this long-term, jittery stress.
Cautions:
Pregnant and nursing women, prepubescent children, those with estrogen-sensitive diseases, and those on hormonal medications should avoid hops due to its phytoestrogen content. This herb is contraindicated in people suffering from depression. Hops may interfere with sedative medications and alcohol.
Throughout history, hops has been a venerable staple in home remedies. The next time you’re struggling with sleep, anxiety, or a case of nervous digestion, consider reaching for hops. This time-tested herb may just provide the relief you need.
In this recipe, we temper strong hops and dandelion with chamomile and warming ginger for a vinegar that you can use as a mild digestive bitter or add to vegetables and salads. Use malt vinegar for sweetness [hops and malt are a traditional combination} or apple-cider vinegar for a crisper taste.
1 part hops {to taste}
1 part chamomile {to taste}
1/2 part dandelion leaf
1/4 part dry ginger root
1/8 part dried orange peel
Malt or apple-cider vinegar
In a glass jar combine herbs and cover to top with vinegar. Cap with a plastic or glass cover {vinegar is corrosive}. Store in a warm place for one to five days, shaking often, and testing for desired strength. Starin and bottle. Keep in the refrigerator for up to a year.
In combination, hops and valerian create a powerful sleep remedy. The addition of passionflower and skullcap quiets overactive minds and relaxes the body. Use this during bouts of insomnia to help facilitate peaceful, restorative sleep.
1 part hops
1 part valerian root
1/2 part passionflower
1/2 part skullcap
Combine herbs in a canning jar of your choice and cover with your favourite 80- to 100-proof alcohol to the top and cover. Store in a warm, dark place, shaking often, for four to six weeks. Strain and bottle. Dose: 20-30 drops one hour before bed and again upon retiring. Repeat dosage if you awake during the night. Use for up to two weeks.
Try this for a bittersweet zesty cocktail, aperitif, or with mineral water. For extra zing, add a pinch of freshly grated ginger.
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup honey
2 Tbls dried hops
1 tsp fresh lemon zest
Combine water and honey over low heat until well-mixed. Add hops and lemon zest. Remove from the heat, stir, cover, and steep 30 minutes. Test; if you prefer a stronger flavor, steep longer.
Get creative with this craft pillow, using different fabrics. These pillows also make great gifts for loved ones struggling to find sleep.
2 parts dried hops
2 parts dried lavender
2 parts dried mugwort
1 part dried chamomile
1 part dried roses
1/2 part dried marjoram
1/2 part dried catnip
Combine these aromatic, relaxing herbs and spoon into a 4 x 4-inch pillowcase, muslin bag, or sock. Secure the open side and place next to your pillow at bedtime for calming sleep and pleasant dreams.

Lekki seaport: Analysts proffer measures to avert repeat of Apapa scenario
Tumblr media
As Nigerian businesses anticipate the completion and take-off of the much-awaited $1.5 billion Lekki Deep Seaport, the consensus opinion among experts is that the promoters of the port project must do everything possible to avert a repeat of the Apapa conundrum. Apapa, which plays host to Nigeria’s two busiest ports – Apapa and Tin-Can Island – that together control 75 percent of import and export activities, has for too long been bedevilled by persistent gridlock occasioned by unwholesome activities of truckers. This situation, apart from its effect on daily movement of motorists, residents and commuters in and out of Apapa, has crippled businesses in the port city, crashed property value in this prime location, and left over 40 percent of the buildings in Apapa GRA currently empty. It is this situation that the analysts say the Lekki Deep Seaport axis may eventually face unless the promoters of the port project push for the expansion of the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Epe-Shagamu Road as well as the development of functional rail line to ensure smooth movement of cargoes in and out of the port. Iheanacho Ebubeogu, general manager, security, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), said Nigeria needs a deep seaport as soon as possible to allow for berthing of bigger ships and achieve economy of scale. He added, however, that there was need to expand the roads leading to the Lekki Deep Seaport to eight lanes to avert the reoccurrence of the Apapa problem.
Tumblr media
“To avert the reoccurrence of what is happening in Apapa today, government in building the new port, should ensure that between the port entrance and about 4 kilometres away, there should be only warehouses for storing cargoes and roads for movement of cargo by trucks,” said Kunle Folarin, chairman, Port Consultative Council (PCC), at a recent quarterly business roundtable organised by MMS Plus Newspapers. Lekki Port, which is a multi-purpose seaport located at the heart of the Lagos Free Trade Zone, is expected to be one of the most modern ports in West Africa at completion. The NPA awarded 45 years concession to Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis. The experts say the promoters of the project also need to push for the establishment of truck and trailer transit parks within Epe axis to serve as truck holding-bays where electronic call-up system will be used to streamline the number of trucks coming to the port to pick laden containers or drop empties. In addition, they say the Federal Government needs to limit the number of oil tank farms licensed to be situated within the Epe axis while the existing tank farms and refineries should use railway or pipelines as alternative means of evacuating products. When these are done, they believe Nigeria’s first deep seaport will become a destination hub for trans-shipment and local cargoes without recording incidents of traffic congestion that currently obstructs free movement of cargo out of the nation’s major seaports. Ebubeogu advised promoters of port projects in Nigeria to learn not to depend on port plan but port master plan. “Port plan covers the jurisdiction of the port while port master plan covers the port itself and its maritime industrial environment. For instance, if the NPA has had the vision of port master plan at the time Apapa port was built, the whole of Creek Road and Wharf Road would have been secured and owned by the NPA,” Ebubeogu said. “If the NPA had Creek Road, there is no way the authority would have allowed two tank farms to be located on Creek Road. We must have port areas where the port managers collaborate with the city administrators to regulate traffic,” he added.
Tumblr media
Citing the America example, Ebubeogu said the World Trade Centre and its environs belong to the Port of New York and it enabled the US port authority to regulate the tenancy such that the traffic flow from the city is not in conflict with that of the port. Folarin said there is no port corridor in Nigeria because there are several residential houses located 10 metres from the port. He suggested that new ports like Lekki should have ring road exclusively reserved for port operations. “If we keep using single mode of transportation without rail and waterways, the roads will fail due to the pressure on them. For example, when Apapa-Oshodi Expressway was constructed, it was conceived that the road was meant to serve the Tin-Can Island Port, but today the road has become a municipal traffic area used by residents,” he said. According to Folarin, a recent study carried out shows that about 1 million vehicles transit from Oshodi through Apapa to Lagos at peak period, showing that new ports like Lekki should plan for future growth. “If we fail to do the right thing today, in the future, if Nigeria prospers and the volume of cargo increases, it will become difficult to manager prosperity than poverty,” he added. Speaking further, Ebubeogu said traffic has been difficult to manage in ports in Lagos because all Nigerian ports have extensive port mileage except Warri port. Port mileage is the distance between the port entrance and the highway.
Tumblr media
Ebubeogu said Warri port is the only port a trailer can come out from and drive into the expressway while others create port mileage, adding that Lekki needs to avoid city traffic interfering in cargo transportation. “When Tin-Can was built, the highway started from Tin-Can gate, but today, if a trailer leaves Tin-Can Port, the driver will keep accelerating and breaking until the vehicle gets to Mile 2,” he said. “Leaving Apapa Port from Wharf Road, it is only when the trailer gets to Stadium that the driver will start having constant acceleration. But from the port, the driver can change gear more than 50 times before getting to this point,” he added. Upon completion, Lekki Port will have a total of three container berths, one dry bulk berth and three liquid berths. It is expected to have 16.5 metres draught for berthing of larger vessels and accommodate 2.7 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of container capacity per annum. In terms of ownership, International Consortium led by Lekki Port Investment Holding Inc. (Tolaram Group) holds 75 percent of the equity share, Lagos State Government 20 percent, and the NPA hold 5 percent. Source: By AMAKA ANAGOR-EWUZIE Read the full article

Hey Gorgeous!
And, welcome back to my blog!
How are you today?
Before you read this post.. Take a moment to center yourself by taking three deep breaths.
Alright, done?
Coooool. Let’s get into then.
Happy Wednesday!
On Wednesday’s we brag about this week’s #INSPOBAE.
Why? Because she’s our woman crush, duh!
This week, I’m bring you a true goddess.
She’s currently Miss Universe Great Britain (MUGB) 2018 and, she recently competed in the Miss Universe Pageant.
She’s a cool, and down to earth Queen.
And, she just so happens to be cousin! Talk about blessings.
Welcome this week’s #INSPOBAE:
Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers MUGB 2018
Hey Dee-Ann,
Thank you for joining me today on Roseconnexa.
Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?
I’m a 26 years old who grew up running around barefoot on a tiny idyllic paradise called Anguilla which is probably exactly why my future husband and I will have to understand that pedicures have to be part of our routine. I’m a “post-athlete” still benefiting from my years running around the track and a beauty queen. Additionally, I have the most random but awesome taste in music ever (shameless plug).
What do you want your legacy to be? Or what is your life’s mission statement?
Wow. My legacy? I’m still in the process of creating that by living life in my truth. What I constantly remind myself and the people I mentor is that life isn’t necessarily about being exceptional. It’s about being intentional. Wherever your foot lands it’s not just about your talent but the heart you show by going for it.
What inspired you to start competing in Beauty Pageants?
I started competing in pageantry after I realised that the knee injury I sustained during the heptathlon at the Commonwealth Games wasn’t transient and, I wouldn’t become the Olympic athlete I thought I would be. So, in my search to find something new and challenge my comfort zone I decided to do the last thing I ever planned on doing. Model on a stage in front of people (that wasn’t the challenge) and look graceful doing it (here we go).
What is your favorite part/process when it comes to competing?
What I love about competition is mastering the mental prep- its like preparing the soil of the mind to be fertile enough to grow the seed you want it to grow. For track and field it meant debunking my bodily limitations and for pageantry it was about creating a pool of inner confidence and knowledge that allowed me to feel secure in myself around a bevy of educated, ambitious and beautiful women.
What advice would you give to young ladies who are interested in competing in Beauty Pageants?
This is going to sound cliche. But you need to understand yourself and feel secure in what you have to offer the world. Pageants don’t have performance indicators that you can measure by speed, time or physical ability. It’s about branding, having business sense, being emotionally intelligent, communicating well and actually making a difference in your community. Start small- help out at your local clubs because these volunteer positions put life into perspective. You can’t inspire others without helping others.
How did you feel during the journey of competing at Miss Universe? What was it like for you?
Miss Universe was a rollercoaster of emotions. Imagine being placed in a complex with 100 people from different countries who are speak different languages, have different personalities and think in entirely different cultural contexts. Whilst still managing your own emotions, your lack of personal space and focusing on presenting yourself clearly to the world in a way that you want to. No pressure really.
What does it mean to you as a woman of color with dreadlocks competing in these major pageants?
As a woman of colour with dreadlocks to place 11th at Miss Universe I feel as though the tide is changing but it has not yet come in. As women we are demanding that the world make space for us because for too long our requests have been ignored. I want young black women to understand that they are worthy of any space we occupy and that they do not need to cast off their cultural identity in order to do so.
What is a normal day in the life of Dee-Ann after Miss Universe and after being crowned MUGB 2018?
A normal day in the life of Dee consists of exercise in the morning, sending off emails, replying to requests online, briefing myself on legal developments; so that when I go out into the law I am not up the creek without a paddle, modelling, salsa dancing and organizing charity events.
What’s your #1 beauty secret?
Water. Seriously, the more alkaline water I drink (evenly spaced throughout the day) the better my skin looks with and without makeup.
What’s next for you?
Whats next is practicing law and deciding where in this big beautiful world I want to live! if its one thing Miss Universe has taught me is that my options are limitless and there’s nothing I can’t do.
Thank you Dee-Ann!
This interview was so lively.
I got some great takeaways from our interview too.
Being a young black women with dreadlocks and competing in these major pageants is ground breaking! I love your statement about young black women understanding their worth. We are so worthy of everything and anything! I think that you have paved a way for others who recognize themselves in you. Aka; me and probably so many other young ladies. I truly loved watching you grace those stages. Not only because we are cousins. But, because I can see your power and you’re purpose radiating through that fierce walk. You are very inspiring to me.
I love what you want your legacy to be. Life is about being intentional and real. Wherever we are right now is where we are meant to be. We should always be present and wholehearted. And, aware! Where you lack the talent replace it with a warm and intentional heart. That will take you further than any talent, any day. In my opinion.
I think that this short interview has really captured your soul and your intellect! You are the funniest in real life and you have portrayed your wits during this interview. I LOVE!
Thank you again Dee-Ann, for being apart of Roseconnexa.
This interview has given us all a deeper look into the life and heart of Dee-Ann. We can’t wait to see your journey unfold for you. You are definitely making us all so proud. Whilst  making an impact in the world.

About ODM Here
Brief Background About ODM!

So, interestingly it was solely sold and distributed mostly by ministry members who had no job or jobs but used it as a means of survival. It has gone into the outermost parts of the world, and today it is being distributed worldwide by local and international distributors, sold in churches, bookshops, streets and street corners, hospitals, prisons, orphanages, Bureau centres (business centres) and all corners of the world.
Today ODM has practically become a household name, used by millions of people all over the world.

Free parking, free gear check and a free kids’ mud zone area for children 12 and under are available, as well as the unusual amenity of on-site showers for mud run participants. Post-event activities include individual and group award presentations, a festival area with food and drinks, and walkable access to the adjacent Cedar Lake Cellars winery. The run’s obstacles, which vary each year to ensure new challenges, include the signature Torpedo Launcher, a 100-foot water slide that empties into a 12-foot deep water pit. Other highlights include The Gauntlet, which is six lanes of varying difficulties situated over an eight-foot deep water pit. The Battlegrounds incorporates all types of terrains including creeks, woods, fields and valleys that add to the intense level of competition. Proceeds and a canned food drive held at the mud run will benefit Operation Food Search (OFS), a hunger relief organization that provides food and nutrition education. Founded in 1981, OFS helps feed more than 200,000 individuals on a monthly basis – one-third of which are children – through a network of 330 community partners in 31 Missouri and Illinois counties, as well as in the city of St. Louis. The Battlegrounds will work with Funds2Orgs.com to collect and donate racer’s shoes to those in developing nations with proceeds benefitting Operation Food Search. The Battlegrounds will host an exclusive wave designated for elite runners to race others with similar abilities. The 8 a.m. wave is limited to the first 250 runners who can maintain an 8 minute 30-second mile pace. Awards are presented to the top three individuals for their gender in the 18 to 30, 31 to 41, and 41 and older age groups. All participants must be 18 years of age or older. Ticket prices range from $90 to $150 for premium morning time slots and $70 to $130 for general afternoon admission that does not include race timing.
