Hi!! I’ve been taking a break from social media! I’m back to share more astrology wiz with everyone.
But before I even get into anything, I’m gonna add some books and resources that have shaped my philosophy as an astrologer (and hopefully I can pin this to the top of my page because I’ve been getting so many messages in my absence about where I’ve learned my doctrine)
Tumblr media
1. Hellenistic astrology: The study of fate and fortune” by chris Brennan. This book will take you on a historical dive within astrology. You will learn some very useful and yet obscure ancient astrology techniques that kinda temporarily got shoved into oblivion by pop astrology.
2. On the heavenly spheres by Helena Avalar. Reading this book is what really convinced me to throw modern astrology out the window and helped me to see how “not helpful” it was. You will see how much pop astrology kind of alleviates the truth. Only get this book if you’re interested in why I have such a distain for some very questionable mainstream modern astrology information.
3. Astrology and the authentic self by Demetria George. I wanna say that this book was the very first one I read and it doesn’t prioritize the meanings of the signs. When you first get into traditional astrology you’re gonna think it’s so boring because you quickly realize that the signs get their meanings from the planets and not just from themselves. You’ll read things like “Aquarius: enemy of the sun, preferred domicile of saturn” etc. Something to take into consideration is also the amount of daylight and nighttime and that goes on during that signs time of the year, Hellenistic astrologers as I know now take meanings from that as well.
4. Ancient astrology in Theory and Practice: a manual l of traditional techniques. This book is volume one and 2.
5. The house, temples of the sky by Deborah houlding. I wanna say that this woman is my TEACHER and I LOVE this book because this book will introduce you to an ancient perspective of the houses, the very first interpretation of the houses. This book does NOT associate any of the signs with the houses as none of the ancient astrologers did and especially not the valens.
6. The astrology podcast. Go to to YouTube and search up “the astrology podcast planets” and just start writing things down. You can also type in “3 misconceptions of (insert any sign)” and Adam elenbaas will pop up, he is a certified Hellenistic astrology so prepare to learn things about your sign you never knew.
6. The most expensive resource would be to go to astrology school which is 1300$ dollars at nightlightastrology.com and is a whole course. After you get the certificate you can call yourself a “certified Hellenistic astrologer.” if this is your passion and something you wanna be doing in the long term I highly recommend.
Tumblr media
I wanna close this post out by saying that Hellenistic astrology is the oldest form of horoscopic astrology, it is the source, the OG and it is where everything we know about astrology today came from. Anything that was taken and misconstrued LITERALLY came from Hellenistic astrology.
Hope this helps xx

pretty slow afternoon, i felt like drawing so i began doodling type ideas. i was supposed to do my 36dot sketches, but i ended up intuitively creating a custom script lettering for "lovers" i REALLYYYY love it, i enjoyed doing it so much!! i think i got better at weight setting and understanding the ebbs and flows of script curves in type, i felt really inspired and impassioned
i shared on my ig story, that while making the letterforms, i was listening to soft, lucid love songs that reminded me of ocean waves, how affection feels like tides pushing and pulling, kissing and clinging onto the shore, and the sand always knowing that the waters will come back again and again... which inspired the swirls and repeating motifs in my work :] <333 sickly sweet and always the same. that is the lovers for me ~

May I ask this? I notice that opposite signs like Aries-Libra, Leo-Aquarius, Virgo-Pisces, and Cancer-Capricorn make sense, it’s pretty obvious why they are opposite. But I have trouble distinguishing Scorpio-Taurus and Sagittarius-Gemini because these signs are almost the same to me. Scorpio-Taurus are both observant and possessive. Gemini-Sagittarius are both bright and searching for knowledge. I’ve seen a fair amount conflict between the first four pairs in my life because of their opposing characteristics (ex. heavily Aries friend constantly argues with heavily Libra friend, roommate with strong Virgo fights with roommate with strong Pisces, etc.). These last two get along so I don’t understand how they’re considered opposites?
OPPOSITIONS
I'll answer both your asks, but it might not be what you expect,. First I want to talk about oppositions. Tumblr is probably the only place that talks about "sister" signs refering to opposite signs. I don't know where that comes from, but sounds to me like some jungian thing. His "shadow". Modern "psychological", or "evolutionary", or "archetypal" astrologers really like that. I'm a Psychology student myself and I don't like mixing Jung or Psychology with Astrology.
Astrology has a very rich philosophy and world view behind it, and it's very disappointing that people don't try to figure out it's principles and instead they apply completely modern concepts to it. And it's like...
Tumblr media
Oppositions are not "sisters", they're opposite. That doesn't mean they'll be people that never get along, neither that they will, especially because it's just the Sun sign you're talking about. Their whole chart can show so many things that make them like each other. And if they're born in the night, their Moon is much more important than their Sun.
The ascendant is the one really representing the person. No, it's not a "persona", not a "mask" you wear to other people to desguise the real you. That's a really modern psychological concept and it doesn't make sense with where astrology is coming from. Modern astrology is full of anachronistic traps like that. I might consider it a little bit whitewashing as well.
The most basic thing about Astrology is the simple hermetic principle of "As above, so below", so whatever is rising in the eastern horizon is just now being birthed and will show likeness with whatever is being birthed on Earth and vice versa. The first house is a place of spirit rising into matter, it reveals appearance and mind, body and spirit. It's where Mercury rejoices, the most human-like planet/god, who's both light and dark, male and female, diurnal and nocturnal.
Its opposite, the 7th house, however, is the place of death. I know you've heard it's the 8th, and it is, but the 8th was called by the ancient greeks as "Epicataphora", which means something like "casting down into the underworld", and it talks about the beginning and manner of death. Look at the 8th house ruler of famous people who died and you'll probably see the why and how. The 8th is called the Idle place, and by Firmicus Maternus as one of the gates of Hades, more especifically the entry gate. The 2nd house was the exit, representing riches that come from the earth. By the way, the etymology for "Hades" is "underworld" and Pluto means "riches" or "wealth". Those houses talk about what supports life or death, it's about earthly substance or loss of that. When you enter the underworld you have to leave everything behind, the body is considered only a borrowed costume and you leave it at the door.
The 7th is death because is where everything really sets and symbolically dies. Pytagoreans took from the egyptians and mesopotamians the idea that the east and west were linked to right and left respectively. Throughout the whole world, the east/right orientation was symbolic of anything good, light, beneficial, strong etc while the west/left was about giving strength to others, darkness, also a sense of union and partnership, but weakening for us, with potential harm from unknown forces, the other, the enemy. The opposite sign is where we're exiled. ¹
Oppositions are of the nature of Saturn, the original lord of death. He's the limit, separation, endings, the stranger, the unknown. Oppositions are irreconcilable differences, like black and white. If there's a little bit of white, then it's already not black anymore; if there's a little bit of black, then it's not white. There's no way you can blend the two and not loose them both. Both transmute each other into grey (keep that in mind).
But there's a way they relate. You can't see in darkness, but you can't see if there's too much light either. The Sun makes all of the other planets invisible in the sky while he shines. You can see because of its light, but in darkness you can see all the stars. Opposite signs are completely different in what they do, they come from completely opposite places, and they're going towards completely different places, but still towards one another. Cancer marks the summer solstice for the northern hemisphere, it's the longest day of the year, but from there, the Sun starts going down, towards Capricorn. Capricorn marks the winter solstice, the longest night, but from there the Sun starts going up, towards Cancer. Opposites are always of the same modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable) and of complementary elements (air and fire/earth and water). So they're able to affect each other from a place of confrontation, that doesn't mean they won't mingle, but when they do, we won't get them fully, we won't see black or white, or day or night; we'll see grey, or a twilight.
Am I saying "opposites attract"? Yin yang? No, but kinda. Gender norms and heteronormativity was probably a big contributing factor to the idea that you relate with your opposite (male with female), so relationships were put in the 7th house. But it's still kinda true about how relationships work, energy exchange wise. We're in front of each other, backs to opposite sides, trying to affect each other from opposite perspectives.
Marriages and relationships kinda work like enmities and we have to pay attention not to cause harm. We're always trying to figure out how to get to the other and affect them, but also how to not loose ourselves in the process, by creating boundaries. It's exactly what you do in a fight, only the kind of intention is different. Relationships are very saturnine. You're trying to get to strange territory and if you're not careful you could break or break them.
Now diverging just a little bit, I really admire Eliphas Levi's work and he talks about how love is sometimes dangerous because of "sidereal transmutation". It's the idea that by sympathy, we transform the targets of our investments. We identify ourselves with the other because of how we affect them directly and start blending our energies with them. People notice that in how couples start looking alike and behave similarly after some time together.
We act by our imagination on the imagination of others, by our sidereal body on theirs, by our organs on their organs, in such a way that, through sympathy, whether of inclination or obsession, we possess one another reciprocally and identify ourselves with those whom we wish to affect. Reactions against such dominations may cause the most pronounced antipathy to succeed the liveliest sympathy. Love has a tendency to unify beings; in thus identifying, it renders them rivals frequently, and hence enemies, if in the depth of the two natures there is some unsociable disposition like pride. To fill two united souls with pride in an equal degree is to disjoin them by making them rivals. Antagonism is the necessary consequence of a plurality of gods. ²
You're putting a lot of energy towards them, and it's really like the laws of physics to Levi, you hit a brick wall and you better believe it's going to hit you back. So you better affect them with something good. You affect them and eventually they'll show likeness to whatever you're putting out towards them. They'll transform into what you put on them, that's why relationships with parents who love to label their kids are so pervasive and toxic. Levi refers to this kind of labeling from parents as a "curse" in this chapter.
You also have to be aware of how they're affecting you, how relationships are transforming you. It's interesting how in myth, love a lot of the times happens with a transmutation and it' always a little weird and "problematic". Levi even says:
"This virtue of sidereal transmutation, which really exists in love, explains the allegorical marvels of the wand of Circe. Apuleius speaks of a Thessalian woman who changed herself into a bird; he won the affections of her servant to discover the secrets of the mistress, but succeeded only in transforming himself into an ass. This allegory contains the most hidden secrets of love." ³

Deborah Houlding wrote an absolutely fantastic article about the way the aspects were used in traditional astrology. She talks about out of sign aspects, whether an aspect is dexter or sinister, orbs for individual planets, how the square aspect was viewed in comparison to today, and so much more. I highly recommend reading this one. I normally include a quote but I’d end up quoting the whole article if I did that here.

House 3: The energy is about expression and interaction
Tumblr media
While the 1st House tells a story about what makes you, the 3rd House says a lot about personality too - it is the energy in which your individuality is expressed and how you connect to the community.
The 3rd is about communication, learning, school life, short distance travel and/or migration, family connections other than parents, neighbors, community, how the mind functions.
The 3rd is what we say and its consequences, it's how we can fit in a community, how we see others as close or equals in a shared environment such as siblings, cousins, or classmates. This house has friendly roots, seen at one point as the house of "fortunes and fates of brothers".   "The 3rd house, like the 11th also has a traditional association with friendship...But the friends of the 3rd are assumed to be personal and family-related. The 11th House has a stronger connection with "social" friendships." -Deborah Houlding
The 3rd House can be just as impactful on daily life as the 6th. We see the uniqueness in how we speak, gossip and rumors, who we see as worthy to send holiday cards to, sibling rivalry or understanding, how we feel safe to communicate, the stress of family visits, and more.

Markiplier and his basic placements (Astrology)
This is an attempt of delineation as someone who is a wee bab in astro (Need to say this because y’all will smite me). This is a basic interpretation of Mark Edward Fischbach, also known as the Youtuber Markiplier and is one half of the duo in Unus Annus. He was born on June 28, 1989 in  Honolulu, Hawaii at 5:36 AM, as per his 30th birthday video.
This will be in the traditional and in whole signs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cancer ASC, Sun, Chiron and Venus - The Cancerian archetypes are visible in this. He is often shown as very expressive, reactive and sensitive. There are several times he has cried (Whenever his community does wonderful things), can’t hold up his laughter (Try not to laugh challenge videos) and even anger (The whole Youtube chat banning thing). He is basically a soft boi both inside and if he feels things, he will definitely let people know despite at times he has difficulty restraining it (opposing Saturn). He is also affectionate, sentimental and nurturing. These characteristics are what people might perceive to him and how he presents himself in general. Cancer ascending has a typical feature of having soft faces and small stature soooo I’m sorry Mark if you are reading this.
Tumblr media
Taurus moon - Taurus moons want comfort and emotional stability. His moon is in 11H (friendships, alliances) so there is this chillness when he is surrounded by his close friends. He does collaborate with them a lot as well and you can tell his rowdy enjoyment in being with them. He loves the security he has regarding his friends, preferably a small circle of friends, and trusts them a lot. He did say he is an introvert multiple times, as his moon is trine with his sun, this can be an indication of that.
Gemini Mercury and Jupiter - He is very articulate in his communication, especially about his experiences in serious topics, as per the domicile of Mercury. He can make so many reasons to get himself out of it and can talk for hours. He also uses his platform for charity livestreams several times.
As his placements are in the 12H, which are about limitations, restrictions, it can also mean self undoing. 12th house often has significations relating to mental illness, this can relate regarding to his ADHD. Jupiter in Gemini shows a detriment state, which means how he approach and process his thoughts specifically (conjunction with Mercury) are different and often goes in excess. This can go in scattered and in over the top manner despite his intentions are good. Also, as mentioned, this is the house of restriction, at times he doesn’t set much boundaries to himself. One example is when he has to do a tasteful nude calendar and had to sign thousands of it, which he did in days. This is for a charity event for Cancer Research Institute. At that time as well, he had promised a ghost pepper challenge but he had to pass it out because of the calendar and health reasons.
Tumblr media
Leo Mars - Mars is in Leo in the 2nd house, the house of possessions, financial resources and support. Albeit jokingly, he did say “I AM A MAN WHO HAS 5 OVENS.” and has a competitive streak in every little thing he does which he has to check and be humbled regardless, especially to his circles. Multiple times he showed a dare me attitude and pushing his limits to see how far he can go, despite Ethan teasing him he is a “masochist”. This can indicate his part of being prideful and cockiness as he often shows it as a joke multiple times. This placement can show the potential to leadership, especially regarding his friendships (square to Moon in Taurus  along with Venus in Cancer in the 11H, also squaring to Pluto in 5H), but as mentioned prior, he has to be aware of the line between his pride and temperament professionally and emotionally. (Ruler of 10H and 5H also indicates it). One example I can think of was about the Markiplier and Cyndago situation years ago, which he did an apology for it and another, even though this is a fun activity, was the Presidential Fitness Test in Unus Annus with Ethan, where he punched the wall (can be out of the competitive pressure), injured himself and sincerely apologized to him afterwards.
Capricorn Saturn, Uranus and Neptune - These planets landed on his 7th house, which is more about his partnerships/relationships. This can go to his relationship with Amy, his girlfriend. Yes, she is a Gemini, but in this context, she shows a Saturnian nature to him. One example is her helping him with his schedule and projects. She can be a big influence to the discipline and adjustments he has to do to get on his day and to make his commitments meet (Opposing his Cancer placements). Another one that can show indication is his business partner of the clothing brand Cloak, Sean McLoughlin (Jacksepticeye), it has a nice touch that he has a Capricorn stellium. Another is to his fellow Youtuber and friend Ethan Nestor (Crankgameplays), his partner in Unus Annus, who according to him, has a Capricorn rising. Being in trine to his Moon in Taurus shows stability and reassurance within their common circles.
Tumblr media
Pisces MC -  As this is in trine to his Cancer placements, he has a reputation of emotional outbursts and creativity in various ways in his videos. Also, he has ventured to different kinds besides Youtube, such as having an improv tour You’re Welcome and voiced over multiple characters, especially in the podcast Edge of Sleep.
Mark is slowly finishing his Saturn Return this year. In the past years, there have been big significant changes mostly pertaining to his relationships/partnerships. As said in the Capricorn section, Amy is a big influence to Mark’s daily life and creative projects, she has been more of the back end of things but did a tremendous input especially to his biggest project A Heist with Markiplier last year. Also, Ethan and Mark launched Unus Annus, a Youtube channel that uploads one video a day and it will all be deleted a year later. They try new things every video and they have the Memento Mori as another slogan and says death themes a lot. This is such a Saturnian theme especially in Capricorn. Because of this, he has become incredibly busy and hence has to keep and follow a schedule. In 2018, Sean and Mark launched their clothing brand Cloak.
This 2020 will be very interesting as his annual profection will be in the 8th house, the place of resources of others, death, taxes, etc., where its ruler (Saturn because it's in Aquarius) is in the 7th (relationships/partnerships). I kind of see this in the Unus Annus project they had going on, as it attracted a fanbase and celebrating its last video this year and eventually disappearing will be a significant thing (ending a thing, or a “death”). This can also mean a possible venture of shared resources via partnership, as he shared that there is a works for a sequel of A Heist with Markiplier.

Astrology + Tarot Things I Am Making to Un-Bored You
Tumblr media
Now that I’m finally getting my feet under me with the whole plague thing, I’m working on figuring out ways to help keep everyone entertained.
Things you might want to take advantage of:
1. Free Panel on Polytheism and Asteroid Astrology: Asteroids of the Gods (@aotgproject) will be presenting at the TechnoCoven on Discord on May 1st at 7PM (UTC).
2. Free Readings: I am offering a free, private single-subject reading to new Patreon supporters. Astrology or Tarot? Your choice! I sell these readings for $25-45, and patrons can get one for free if they support me for at least $3/month. It’s a really good deal.
I am also doing my best to increase the number of free readings I offer patrons. I have been spending 90% of my working hours lately doing free readings or making stuff for Patreon. If you just follow me here, you’re missing most of the fun.
3. Free Tarot Class: I am working on a free class on how to learn Tarot the fun way. If you have been struggling with memorizing all 78 cards + reversals, I will share an intuitive approach that draws on things you already know and find interesting to help you read the cards.
I will be teaching the class on the Diviners Anonymous Discord Server, and I will be announcing the date and time there first. If you want to make sure not to miss it, join Diviners Anonymous.
4. Brain Candy: I have new tiers on Patreon which give you access to my astrology research notes. I watch a lot of very long podcasts and am very good at condensing them and providing context, so you don’t have to listen to boring tangents and rants.
I also share essays in which I explain the cool parts of what I’m reading. Right now I’m going through The Houses: Temples of the Sky by Deborah Houlding, which completely blew my head open. If you have a hard time with the difference between signs and houses, you must read this book become my patron.
5. Really Cheap Brain Candy: Until June 1st, you can get most of what I offer on Patreon for $1/month by joining my Early Adopter Tier. In June, I will be limiting the number of members I allow in that tier. So, you really want to take advantage of this if you can.

I just finished Deborah Houlding's book on the houses, The houses, Temples of the Sky. It took me longer than I expected. It's not a difficult read at all. Life just intervened and I found it hard to give the book the proper attention until today. It's a short book. Only about 150 pages. 30 of which constitute a rather useful glossary and appendix. Overall I enjoyed it. It's great for reference. Though, I have to say I enjoyed the first part more than the second part. That may be because I am already a devout user and proponent of the whole sign house system and I don't really consider Ptolemy an astrologer in the classical sense. Ptolemy kind of reminds me of contemporary New Age people who try to incorporate "science" and "technology" into their spirituality in order to validate it. If it works for them, great. Personally, It's just not my thing. That said, I realize it was his approach that allowed astrology to survive through the middle ages and that all contemporary astrologers are indebted to him. Still, not my cup of tea at the moment. I'm much more old school in the sense that for me astrology is a form of soothsaying where fate is revealed through planetary movements and positions. For me, it is not a form of pseudoscience where the planets cause events through their nature and influence but an inspired language of complex astronomical symbols that relate to our human condition. Symbols that lend themselves to a certain level of ineffability and uncanniness in their actual ability to divine. That was a bit of a tangent. Anyway, the point is the book is worth your time. Especially if you want to get away from the overly simplified Aries = the 1st house = Mars Alan Leo formula, and truly understand why the houses mean what they mean, and how those meanings are actually related to the diurnal motion of the sun. Fascinating stuff!

Hi I really this blog, I'm learning astrology and I'm glad I found this blog. Can you talk a bit about the 8th house? Because I'm still new and all I know about it is it talks about death and money from other people. I dont really know how to read it properly or the meaning of having personal planets in the 8th in a natal chart. All I found on the internet was those stuffs sugarcoat everything and sex urg. Thank you. I'm sorry if this bother you in any way.
I have three planets in the 8th (whole sign) house myself. The most accurate interpretation I have found is that the 8th house relates to anxiety. It was known as the idle place by Hellenistic astrologers. It is associated with others' finances, but I think it relates to other people's resources as well, people with power over you, people you hold power over, as resources in this society are associated with power.
Traditional astrology relates the eighth house to crisis, hidden matters, anguish of mind, poison and deadly fears; yet psychological astrology often refers to it as a house of inner transformation and growth. It should be remembered that true transformation follows the burst of creativity that occurs after the lessons of this house have been properly digested. Only by facing our innermost fears are we able to overcome them and move on with the strength of experience and wisdom. But this house is not relevant to the period of growth, its concern is the inhibiting factors that stand in our way. It is a house of personal vulnerability, albeit perhaps a necessary vulnerability from which we may eventually gain. It is wise to avoid any financial gambles or high-risk activities during periods when this house is heavily emphasised.

The fourth house is a 'dark' house, representing hidden or private matters. It is said to indicate the beginning and end of all things, representing early childhood experiences that give rise to an unconscious experience of life, the vulnerability of old age, and the process of death

~The Ascendant~
What is the ascendant? Is it your mask, your outer self, your personality, your physical appearance, is it part of your 1st house, it is IN your 1st house?
The ascendant may seem like a straightforward part of the chart but I’ve seen more and more debate about this angle/point in the community over the years as well as more frequency in confusion about it.
First, the ascendant marks the beginning of your 1st house and really your whole chart, it is an angle in your chart or a point in your chart. It is not “in” your 1st house. The sign your ascendant is in will also be the sign influencing your 1st house, this is because it marks the beginning of the house.
The most common misunderstanding or subject of confusion about the ascendant is the difference between the ascendant and the 1st House. Both sound very similar and/or share many of the same meanings. For example you may have heard that the ascendant and the 1st house can tell someone’s physical appearance. While I myself am skeptical of this, I will tell you that I think a planet aspecting the ascendant and/or in the 1st is more likely to influence looks rather than the ascendant or 1st house by itself. This is because planets are active players and energy in the chart whereas the house is just the environment.
Part of the confusion may stem from the fact this is the beginning of the chart - the birth of your chart in a way. The ascendant is surface expression and energy, a symbolic angle/point/division. The houses are environments and areas of life, the 1st house is the development of self and the environment of self. If you are out to find parts of the chart that tell of your physical appearance then both the ascendant and 1st house can come into play but know they are not interchangeable.
“[Ascendant] is the face that a person presents to the world as a shield to protect his or her inner sun-sign self. As the first thing others notice, an ascendant can effectively mask true personality.” - Judy Hall
The ascendant being about your “physical appearance” I think is the most superficial way to look at this part in astrology. Calling the ascendant a “mask” can be somewhat shallow but I still agree with this interpretation HOWEVER I think people may be looking at the idea of a “mask” in very simple terms. The ascendant can represent your outer self and the outer self may be very different than your emotional self or deepest sense of self and spirit but it doesn’t have to be shallow or superfluous. Just try interacting with a Scorpio ascendant!
The mask shouldn’t be ignored or looked over or underrated. Your outer self is still very much a part of you. Many astrologers have made the argument that the ascendant is not “just a mask” but your true personality, maybe even your most pure expression of personality. After all many horoscopes suggest you look at the ascendant rather than Sun or Moon sign. This is due to a few reasons; one because some believe the ascendant is a very accurate and raw description of who you are due to the fact your ascendant is calculated off your specific time of birth - it is more specific than just your Sun and Moon. Another reason is because many ancient astrologers drew horoscopes from the ascendant rather than Sun based on their calculations and methods.
But I think the “mask” and your “true personality” can be one in the same, I think your outer personality can be a very pure expression of who you are. I guess this may be more of a philosophical issue (my sag ascendant 😏) than just an astrological one.
Moving beyond first impressions the ascendant also acts as a way of viewing and taking in the world. Some astrologers even believe the ascendant is the place to look for when determining basic interests. The ascendant is your approach and perception. A Sagittarius ascendant for example may approach the world in an exploratory manner, with optimism and openness. A Capricorn ascendant approaches the world more seriously, looking for meaning or purpose in everything, being more realistic or possibly negative in their perception.
The ascendant is how we are externally and therefore can act as a gate or guard regulating how close others get and how they get to know us. While the midheaven is important for reputation and our “self” in the outer world, this is typically in a more distant manner, how strangers, acquaintances, and coworkers see us and interact with us. The ascendant can be looked at as the method and flavor in which we peel ourselves back, introducing our personality despite reputation and status.
“The ascendant signifies the point of ‘life’ because as the Sun rises here each morning it distributes its life-giving properties of warmth and light to the world.” - Deborah Houlding
The ascendant is the sign on the eastern horizon during your time of birth. In traditional astrology the “Sun is born at dawn” and “dies at sunset”. In this symbolism the ascendant has a focus on the very vitality and power of life where as the Sun travels to other points such as the IC, DC, or MC there is contrast with different meanings.
Because the ascendant actually starts the 1st House you can’t ignore their connection, the ascendant is part of the 1st House but you can’t completely intertangle them. Think of the ascendant as that very first spark of life and then the 1st house your beginning, the way in which the self is shaped. Planets move through the houses where as the houses themselves stay in the same position, they are in a sense passive.
But these angles/points are powerful spots of division and energy. A planet can aspect your ascendant or midheaven but cannot aspect your 1st house or 5th house, only a planet in the 1st or 5th can be aspected by another planet or point.
In summary the ascendant can cover a wide range of topics and associations and shouldn’t always be seen as something shallow OR its “surface level” shouldn’t be seen as something less or be devalued.
