hi!! so this isn't actually the case as while gourdy was briefly mentioned in a trial, said trial had nothing to do with whether or not gourdy was "real" per se as much as. well. murder, actually. while gourdy WAS found out to be an inflatable steel samurai this was not brought up in the case at all as the veracity of gourdy wasn't really as relevant as the fact that the witness was looking for gourdy rather than at the murder she claimed to have seen. plus this was also a relatively small part of a MUCH larger trial which for those interested not only solved the dl-6 case but ALSO marked the end of prosecutor von karma's ~40 year long record and the court records are really a fascinating read through!!

Default Replacement PSA

I wanted to write a post about this because I’ve seen a few cases now of people either making files like these and sharing them, or downloading files from someone else and not understanding why they are conflicting. So!

When making default replacements, make them from scratch whenever you can to decrease the risk of conflict. I’d say that the one exception to this is when changing textures for existing hair defaults, as you’re not changing anything about the mesh, and people probably don’t have another copy of that hair with the same instances in their Downloads folder.

So, kinda tiny pictures but I’m hoping tumblr will let you click them to see a larger version. Here’s a default replacement for fhairflypigtails using 3t2 Steampunk Pigtails. Make note of the instance number for the GMDC (0xFF23C930) and the group and instance numbers for the texture (0x5FB92C0C and 0xFFD686D9).

And here’s a default replacement for fhairpigtails using LeahLillith Birds. If you look at those group and instance numbers, you will see that they have those same group and instance numbers. In fact, even the name of the GMDC is the same. The way this default was made was by extracting the Birds GMDC from that mesh and replacing the Steampunk Pigtails GMDC with it, and then doing the same for the textures from the recolour packages.

Now, this file in isolation is not a problem. It won’t have anything to conflict with. I still wouldn’t recommend it, but if you are making this file for personal use and this is a method that works for you, then I won’t stop you. I would not recommend sharing a file like this, however.

See, to the game, these resources that I pointed out are identical. When I look at them, I can tell that the meshes are different, and that the textures are different. The game doesn’t care. It’s gonna see one GMDC resource with instance 0xFF23C930 (well, and some more things) and read that, and the next time it gets to a GMDC resource with instance 0xFF23C930, it already knows what that looks like.

“But rudhira,” you might say. “You can only get one default replacement per hair anyway!” Yes. That’s true. These two files already conflict with each other by virtue of being default replacements. But! These are not the only files that can contain these resources.

Let’s say I get the file replacing fhairpigtail with LeahLillith Birds. I also get a custom version of 3t2 Steampunk Pigtails, or even a default replacement for another hair using 3t2 Steampunk Pigtails. What’s gonna happen?

This. In both of these cases, the game is reading a GMDC resource (mesh) with instance 0xFF23C930.

The top row is showing the custom hair being read first, and the game learns what that mesh looks like. Then, it encounters that same mesh (same instance number!) in the default replacement package, sees a resource it already knows, and applies the textures in the default replacement to that. The result being that the Birds textures get applied to the Steampunk Pigtails mesh.

The bottom row shows what happens when the Birds mesh gets read first, and what the Steampunk Pigtails textures look like when applied to that.

These problems can be very unintuitive to diagnose, as you can’t really tell that the resources have been affected without opening the package file. There is nothing about the replacement using the Birds mesh that really tells you it would affect the Steampunk Pigtails files. When making these for personal use, you can easily keep track of them by noting what meshes you’ve edited, but when making default replacements to share, I really would recommend going through the trouble of doing it properly.
