Some of the flowers currently blooming in the flower garden
14-Jul-2023
i. Phlox Paniculata 'Pink Flame'
ii. Daylily (I did not plant this, it just showed up in the old garden area)
iii. Snapdragon 'Rocket White'
iv. Marigold 'Inca Orange'
v. Dahlia 'Figaro Yellow'
This winter I became obsessed with dahlias and bought some tubers to plant. I read about the seeds and when the garden center person asked if I needed anything else I sad I was looking for Dahlia seeds, they told me you can’t buy them that way. Which I knew wasn’t true and I found some online,
The thing with dahlias is that if you want the same consistent colors you have to propagate with tubers, but if you like a little chaos you can plant seeds. There’s no control because you don’t know what color pollinated what. I love this sort of experiment.
I planted some in posts on my porch and everyday I’m checking to see the colors. So far there’s a yellow, yellow with peach tinge, lite pink with dark pink stripes, and a sort of purple magenta color! bring more chaos flowers please!
August is ripening grain in the fields blowing hot and sunny, the scent of tree-ripened peaches, of hot buttered sweet corn on the cob. Vivid dahlias fling huge tousled blossoms through gardens and joe-pye-weed dusts the meadow purple.
These dahlias did so well despite the shitty weather. They were labeled annuals when I bought them but I’m gonna try to dig their tubers out in the fall, after the first frost, to see if I can overwinter them.
