“The Lone Wanderer’s actions led to the Brotherhood becoming a tyrannical, overwhelming force on the East Coast” - Tragic. Unexpected. A reminder that the main character is not all-powerful. On the other hand, it doesn’t erase all the good the Lone Wanderer accomplished.
“The Sole Survivor either allowed or helped the Brotherhood to become a weird anti-sex cult that kills all ghouls, sorta enslaves children and kills them on a whim, and spans the continental US. It’s based in Boston BTW.” - Wh-what? In 2/4 possible endings that shouldn’t even be possible. And isn’t the Survivor a paladin/sentinel? You’re telling me they had no say in this? Even Maxson was specifically against the weird cult stuff. In nine years this happened?? I guess that’s… potentially interesting.
“The Courier’s life work exploded offscreen” - NOW YOU’RE JUST MESSING WITH ME TODD

my blog probably gives the impression that i think the show is bad as a whole, but the reason this show frustrates me so much is because it's definitely NOT 100% bad
like... the movies are bad adaptations. everyone knows it. they have some great moments (an embarrassing amount of which are better than the show lol) but overall they are widely considered blatantly bad adaptations. it's easier to make peace with that
the show, however, is far less consistent and i find it much more difficult to wrap my head around. there are parts that are bad and i'm happy to say that with my chest, but underneath numerous questionable-at-best writing choices, there are glimpses of really, really good stuff. the first few episodes had so much promise—percy burning blue jellybeans and praying to sally, the consensus song. these are brand new additions but they're good, they capture the spirit of the story and characters successfully
and sprinkled throughout the rest of the show are other strong choices! for example in the last episode i really liked that they set the betrayal scene during the fireworks, it created a fantastic ambience. i liked that grover left camp at the same time as percy and annabeth so the three of them got to part ways as a trio on half-blood hill
there are good changes being made, but they're almost all small in the grand scheme of things. in my opinion, the bigger, more consequential things are where they missed the most marks, and that prevented me from fully enjoying the show as a long time book fan
when it comes to writing nothing frustrates me more than wasted potential. mediocre writing is one thing, but mediocre writing that could have clearly been so much better is INFURIATING. i don't dislike the show because i wanted it to be a 1:1 recreation of the book, i dislike it because it's just okay when it could have been great. it so EASILY could have been great and i don't get why it's not. a lot of the writing choices are just baffling in their mediocrity, and sometimes technical weakness, when compared to the well written and effective source material. i wish i could have been a fly on the wall in that writers room when they were making some of these decisions, seriously
the cast is phenomenal. their budget is more than sufficient. they marketed it as a "redemption from the movies", as the adaptation that would finally give fans book accuracy. and the show we got is... fine. it's all right. it's not all that book accurate even though it was advertised as such. there's plenty to like but it comes hand in hand with plenty to dislike. it's only natural for people to be disappointed
i know my critiques can come off as venomous but please never mistake my harshness as hating for the sake of it. i adore the original pjo books so i really wanted to adore the show as well, but unfortunately i can't get there yet. "yet" being the key word because there's still plenty of time for this show to pick up the slack, and for that reason i'm glad it got renewed. i don't have the most faith the writers will listen to the feedback but i'm rooting for them to prove me wrong

do you ever worry your own writing might come off as misogynistic though? it seems deceptively easy
When you have anxiety, PTSD, OCD, or multiple of these things, every move you make is something you will self-doubt. It can become endless if you let it, and you can be frozen by absolute indescision.
Embrace the void and reach enlightenment with me; There are many ways to read a story, and no writer can pre-empt every possible interpretation. Not even myself.
If they think my work comes across as misogynistic? Let them. Salty amoebas are often wrong on the internet, but the block button and xkit are beautiful transwomen who are also my friends.

An amazing team up to be sure but boy oh boy I sure hope the child which suffered alone for his whole life and turned to villainy because of a percieved betrayal by the one person that called him friend won't be "taught a lesson" by the power of friendship and how great its to be surrounded by allies and at the end discarded because that's what he deserves!!!

fwiw I think the reason why BOLAS 2 took so long to release wasn't because it took them two and a half years to write a single new book, but bc they at the very least also outlined a book 3, so I (perhaps harboring under deep delusion) think we're not going to get the same insane wait time for book 3

Also to comment on the previous asker's tirade: a very interesting thing about Sansa is that she's very genre-aware, but for the wrong genre. Like, in the books, it seems that the world-picture of a great many characters is jaded, cynical, "down-to-earth", "pragmatic". And whoever adopts this view gains power from it. Tyrion, Tywin, Littlefinger, the men of the Watch, the Knights of the Kingsguard, the Hound, the ironmen, Arya... They derive their power from their "awareness" of "how the world works" which revolves around selfishness, fear, greed, death... To an extent, Sansa's fault, to these people, is the fault of her father: thinking she lived in a better world.
She's still the girl raised on courtly love and virtuous knights, and they hate that she doesn't believe in "The Real World". They see her as too stupid to understand that world, or refusing to join it out of selfishness... In both cases denying herself power.
But it's part of what makes her a great character, 1) the tension between how she lives the world and how she wishes the world to be, something which a great many characters have all but given up on 2) the fact that she isn't really interested in power. She plays the game with Littlefinger because there's nothing else to do, but she'd rather be home with her parents at any given time. She wanted to be a queen, but now she wants something more human. And 3) that she's essentially Emma Bovary getting to live the stuff novels are made of, and she doesn't like that either.
But that makes her intolerable to men because she doesn't try to "achieve" stuff, she's not on a mission, she has no goals, not even pleasure. She's just a teenage girl trying to live after losing everything... She's "unproductive" she doesn't respond "optimally" to stuff, she doesn't care about "the grand design" of Littlefinger's schemes. These men think that if they were dropped in the world of Asoiaf they'd become rich warrior-lords from their jadedness, or change history. Sansa not "min/maxing" her life is an insult to them because she scorns their entire value system by existing as a teen girl.
To me, that makes her the most interesting character of them all, because she really is alien from all the other characters. She is watches them caught in the cycles of desire and suffering, ambition and self-destruction, and has yet to participate. Whether she ends up playing or stays removed, the journey to getting there will have been so interesting...
!!!!!! you articulated this so perfectly <3333

So Miles is pitching for a Top Gun: Rooster and I dont think we need a sequel tbh but if we do get a sequel to TGM what would do you think it would look like/you want it to be like?
i don’t care. the storys over.
Let’s do an indy 5/cars 3 situation (gotta keep the IP alive) where mav is in an old persons home with dementia and multiple replaced joints and divorced but somehow the navy still needs him and just him to train the new 20 year old female protégé (maybe amelia for tie-in bonus?) after rooster volunteered to fight in ukraine in 2022 and got shot down and killed a week into the war… And somehow it’s maverick and only maverick who gets behind the yoke to save the day (OMG Tom cruise wins against all odds again)
fun for the whole family and it makes a lot of money 🥳🤑
