Is there a fanfic idea that you're dying to read that doesn't currently exist yet?

I want to see a nice complicated romance where we get to explore the tricky nature of BJ working very closely with an assertive blonde named Margaret, and how that would undoubtedly fuck with him a bit, especially given how often he's turning to booze to blur the world enough for him to be able to tolerate it.

@cuddleswinchester did me a damage the time that a bunch of us were talking about WTK and what a whirlwind it must've been for all parties involved—Frank and Margaret who were excited to have a fresh young surgeon to fuck mold in their vision, that sort of thing—and we were discussing how shitfaced Beej was when he made his first impression, and Kellan said something to the effect of, "He's just had a horrible dream. Thank goodness his wife is here," in regards to him dropping to his knees and clinging to Margaret immediately, and it dealt me such critical damage that I have lingering wounds that continue to flare up every time I remember it.

So yeah, a fic exploring how BJ might relate to her in that initial transition into the camp, how he finds himself in her space more than he should be, leaning on her, teasing her, being fond of her and far far too familiar, and how rapidly that has the potential to spin out of control in an ill-advised situation or two. I would love that.

This is an idea that no one else cares about, but I will die for all of my rare pairs, and you did ask, and so here we are hkffd

Merry MASHoldays to my dear friend @cuddleswinchester! Dear Kellan, I had the honor, the privilege and the pleasure of crafting a gift for you. I decided to record a podfic of your story, ‘Curves Facing Up.’ I am still pretty new to podficcing, so this may not be as polished as others, but it was made with so much love.

I did, for a minute, entertain the thought of recording ‘Crabapple of my Eye,’ and offering only the first chapter to you as your holiday gift and the rest following as I had time over the course of the year, but I didn’t feel quite right offering an incomplete gift (but now that the idea is in my brain, it continues to intrigue), and besides, I felt that 'Curves Facing Up' is a beautiful illustration of what I love so much about your presence in this fandom and the richness you bring to us all: your knowledge of medicine and medical procedures gives such depth to your stories and your commentary on the episodes. But more than that, it’s the way you are able to show how what they are actually doing in surgery interplays with who they are as people.

On a personal note, I want to express how glad I am to know you and how much I enjoy everything about the way you interact with this show that we all love, from your cosplay to your stories to your love for memorabilia. You are a delight. And especially in regards to your writing, I want you to know how much your stories have moved and affected me – after reading a few of your more surgically-oriented fics, to then go back and watch the show and to know how much more is going on that we’re not seeing when they’re moving their stained-red hands beneath the stained-red drapes, it heightened all my senses of who these people are, of how incredibly skilled and dedicated they are, and also how horrific this situation is for them and how amazing they are for living through it, staying (mostly) sane, and holding on to their compassion and humanity. Rare the story that both changes and enhances one’s experience of the source material in such a profound way: your stories did that for me.

To speak specifically about Curves Facing Up, I found myself so drawn in to the details of the case that it wasn’t until a second read-through that I realized how delicately you found the balance between detail and pacing. I get the feeling that a medical professional and a layperson could enjoy it equally; the medical jargon never overwhelms the scene or slows the pace, every detail serves the story, and deepens our understanding of who these characters are as people. I found it so touching, the way you showed us Margaret being so used to doing everything herself and being so intensely competent that she could do it all herself, learning to lean on those around her. And Charles’ convoluted path to working himself up to just going to see Margaret at the end of a difficult day; the details you include about his thought process, his habits, his intentions, showing his hyper-awareness of everything around him even when he does not fully understand it (or himself).

And of course, Klinger and Kellye, the unsung heroes of the OR. As Margaret said to Charles: “[you don’t understand] how good I have to be at my job to make you look better at yours,” and that goes for everyone on every rung of the ladder. I was so touched to see Klinger’s dedication to his role in this operation, and the acknowledgment of his and Kellye’s skill and competence was so well-deserved and shown so deftly, it made me very emotional.

LAST SONG: I really don't remember. Last time I conciously listened to music was last thursday when I was out with friends in a really oldfashionend place we use to go to since the mid 90s (and it was oldfashioned then). The landlord has a radio station playing which plays only 80s and early 90s songs all of which we knew to the surprise of the kid of one of my friends. The last song I remember from that night is "Would I lie to you" from Charles & Eddie.

FAVORITE COLOR: Not good with favorites and I like so many colours. Blues (I'm wearing mostly blue) but also a big fan of red(s) and green(s).

CURRENTLY WATCHING: M*A*S*H, Ducktales, Sherlock Holmes (Granada, rewatch) and a Big Bang theory rewatch (after finishing Young Sheldon).

SWEET / SAVOURY / SPICY: Savoury or spicy. I'm not overly fond of sweet (if it isn't chocolate).

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Longterm realtionship since 1992 ...

CURRENT OBSESSION: Last one is/was Good Omens and some other stuff David Tennant did. Other than that I'm obsessionless atm which is always a bit ... sad? I miss the excitement.

Charles Emerson Winchester III

I'd be the first to admit *looks at @topshelf2112-blog * looks at @cuddleswinchester * well okay, no, in this company I would never be the first to admit - that Charles Emerson Winchester has points to admire.

He's brave. I don't mean physically - he quite clearly has a strong reluctance to put his physical safety at risk if anyone else can be got to do it for him. CEW would never have gone out into the compound to disarm and unexploded bomb or offered to climb down a ladder from a chopper to collect a wounded man or run out into the compound under fire to open the gate to save the POWs. But he does have moral courage, in that he won't take undeserved credit when he knows he screwed up: he won't lie for Colonel Baldwin to traduce Margaret: he admits he's hooked on amphetamines when Hawkeye and BJ make him face it (and kicks the addiction).

He's ... generous within his own boundaries. Which include an absolute loathing for being asked for money. But when the gang are trying to figure out how to help Radar pay the taxes due on the O'Reilly family farm, Charles is the first one to suggest a simple solution: they just send him the money.

He loves his sister Honoria and in her honour will blast to the fiery pits of hell anyone he hears mocking a stutterer. (You want to know what Cousin Alfred did? Mocked Honoria's stutter at a family dinner 20 years ago. Charles has neither forgiven nor forgotten.)

That he's a good surgeon who does his best work even when in a M*A*S*H unit where he was transferred in an emergency and kept by the joint vengefulness of Colonel Baldwin and the villainy of Colonel Potter, is not really a count for virtue, but it is why Potter keeps him there and Hawkeye and BJ put up with him.

But.

Charles Emerson Winchester is a stone-cold bigot. He doesn't like anyone who immigrated to the US more recently than his family: specifically Italian immigrants, Irish immigrants, or anyone "swarthy-skinned". The incident where he assists Colonel Potter in trappping a racist would have been absolutely unbelievable except: all Charles was required to do was loan his oak-leaf clusters and the request was made by his commanding officer, not by Hawkeye or BJ. (He may also have actively disliked an officer who got rid of the black soldiers under his command by sending them into danger, however much he sympathised with opposition to integrating the army.)

Winchester never apologises for his bigotry and is never shown actually having a change of heart: the incident where he apologises to Honoria for his angry opposition to her marriage to an Italian, the engagement is safely over anyway and he's comforting her hurt at being jilted.)

Winchester also has an upper-class superiority complex. He is the kind of born-from-wealth/wealthy rich-are-different man: he "works for a living" because he wants to be a surgeon, but his goal is a prestigious position at a prestigious Boston hospital, which he regards as his as of right and the only reason he might be denied it, is he's stuck at an army base in Korea for a year.

He loves Martine LeClerc, but won't pursue the relationship because she's not appropriate kind of people for his family.

He likes Donna just fine, but is screwed up at the thought that he might actually have married her - until it turns out he didn't.

He regards Margaret Houlihan as a friend, but he can absolutely see why Donald Penobscot's mother is reluctant to welcome "a Houlihan" into the family and supports Mrs Penobscot in not recommending Margaret as a memmber to the Daughters of the American Revolution, for reasons which he explains to Margaret, till she threatens to do him personal damage.

While he came to respect the medical staff he worked with, he still thinks he's better than any of them and entitled to things they aren't, purely by reason of his having been born into an upper-upper class family.

Charles is quite capable of being charming when he wants to be. And wealth, as a character in some lesbian detective novel noted to me at some point, wealth is very charming. If Charles wants to be gracious and generous and charming, he can be: he knows how. His upbringing taught him to be chivalric to ladies and his natural inclination is to be nice to pretty girls (I know David Ogden Stiers was gay: but to me CEW comes across as very heterosexual) - but he moves (or he would prefer to) in a world where the lower classes are servants, and the middle classes exist to him as patients if they can afford him.

I would not like Charles Emerson Winchester if I met a man like him in real life (I have met these men in real life, and I know). And a man like CEW would arrange his life so as to meet as few people like us as possible. He's part of the wealthy elite, and he feels he perfectly deserves to be there.

So: why do we like him? Is it possible to write him true to how he is and make him dislikeable? If not, why not? If so, how?

This is coming from a newer WIP that’s got its claws deep in my brain. The gradual relationship development of Hawkeye and Charles, with the main focus being Hawkeye noticing that Charles gets more and more touchy as time goes on. It’s gonna be a longer one, featuring several parts set within episodes (Dr Winchester and Mr Hyde, Bless You Hawkeye, just to name a couple…), and a whole lot of me going insane about hands + touch as is my nature

Hawkeye glances over. Sure enough, Charles is rooted to the spot, staring at the dripping, shattered state of the still with what he can only describe as some sort of fascinated horror. He doesn’t particularly want to look at the still right now, though, so he quickly looks away.

“You missed the main event,” He mutters, his tone savouring strongly of something acidic, “One night only, BJ Hunnicutt and his rampaging bull in the china shop routine.” That’s probably mean. His eye hurts too much for him to really care at the moment, though.
