📚 10 f1 fics i've loved lately 🏎️

been thinking a lot about how to organise fic recs into some sort of sensible post, 'cus there are so many (great!) pairings and (delicious!) driver combinations, not to mention so many varying styles of fic and SUPER TALENTED WRITERS!!111!!

just gonna list a bunch in no particular order, with accompanying pics, so you can get a sense of the vibes.

listen. LISTEN! charles to rbr is one of the best premises ever and i will read it in like a thousand iterations. but this fic. this fic series in particular cleared my skin, made me want to cut my hair into a bob out of sheer emotion. i would be remiss not to start with this one because its impact on my f1 rpf trajectory should be studied by science. you know when a story just jumps off the page and it's so real that it becomes your canon. a kind of meteoric inevitability. plus, i almost never cry at fics. but by the time the third act of this one hit, i just went -- damn, am i rly about to tear up at a f1 rpf fanfiction rn? (yes.)

max as a f1 engineer? for CARLOS at FERRARI? sign me the fuckkk up. first off, awesome premise. there's always going to be something so heartwrenching about "what ifs", especially in any universe where max isn't a racer. despite the change of circumstances, just... the sheer poetry of two characters who just inexplicably find their way to each other in any universe... 🤧 also this story nails racing scenes in a way that's so visceral, i feel like a fly on the damn halo with them. and, aside from the gourmet lestappen, carlos's whole thing in this fic is joyous! spicy! he's so unapologetic and vaguely annoying! hilarious! + the swimming pool scene lives rent-free in my head.

this fic is magic. literally and figuratively. (MERMAID LANDO???? MERMAID LANDO.) the kind of story that makes you gasp and melt a little bit. and made me want to throw my phone at the writer, 'cause it's really that good. the yearning, the metaphor for all that's monstrous, a boy who is lost (and the boy who he finds, is equally so). this is just beautifully written and a little quirky and so well executed. i think i put it in my bookmarks as "what if lando was a mermaid and it was filmed by a24" or something. pearl of a story.

leaf meal one. i have only known you a week but if anything were to happen to you i would wreck everyone in the room including myself. in all seriousness, anything that leaf writes is brilliant. they're one of these writers who could do a throwaway line on the label of a ketchup bottle and i will probably scream about it. the precision, the way they switch up sentence structures, the freaking darcy-level regency yearning transposed onto a contemporary sports setting. i'd rec all of leaf's sports AUs and i'll probably talk about more in a future fic rec post. BUT. the hockeyyy one my GOD. the barely restrained violence, their mutual desire, the theme of finding your place... *wails uncontrollably*

max is a governess(govern..lad?) and daniel is the mystery man at the manor. this was a response to a request i made in the kinkmeme! (if you haven't read those fics go check 'em out, there are so many great ones, and not necessarily all rated e). this is a criminally underrated little story that has my favourite repressed feelings + people dancing around each other + gothic vibes + "what the hell is wrong with y'all in this tale" combo that i really adore. it's really well written and captures the atmosphere so well.

i profess i am not usually the biggest fan of A/B/O (altho!! this fandom has made me go BUT ACTUALLY HM at least a few times). and this fic freaking nails it, along with the twisted power dynamics between TPs and drivers, as seen through the lens of omegaverse. this story rattles around my head like a stubborn ghoul just from the style and prose and sheer audacity alone. george kneeling at toto's knees while he's working..... ohhhhhhhhh i was this close to calling my lawyers.

i LOVE, LOOOOVE a sci fi concept alright. love that shit, will inhale it like moon dust with zero regrets. and what a fantastic one this one is!! the premise is that the FIA can now statistically show the compatibility of drivers on the grid and it's very pacific rim-y drift compatible, mixed with the surreal vibes of eternal sunshine or HER or some such. it should be outrageous, but it really works. that's the beauty of a great fic right there.

also one of the fics i first read when i hopped on board the f1 rpf train. the pain and poignancy just gets worse the more i learn about brocedes. you know when you're like "there's no way this was reallll" and then you're like "fuck, it was so real". then you get a fic like this that just encapsulates all that rage and loss and grief and upset, set against the starry vista of endless space. *clutches tablecloth* god.

I started working on a new sports!series, this time hockey. It’s unnamed and unedited but here is a sneak peek of the first chapter! Also if you’re a hockey buff please hmu becauseI know waaay more about football than I do hockey and don’t want to sound dumb, lol.

Wanna see me do a trick?

I used to say that to my little sister, Prim, all of the time when she needed cheering up. Typically, the question was followed by me skating around the ice rink on one foot or making our old beat up puck fly across its icy length, straight into the net. If my best friend, Gale, was there then I’d drag him into it too. Skating underneath his long legs or body checking him until Prim cracked a smile.

Now, the question was practically my catch phrase.

Wanna see me do a trick? Look me up on YouTube. The stream of videos that will pop up would be all about how I was the first female hockey player at Capital University to perform two hat tricks in one season. A legend in the making. The Girl on Fire.

When people thought about Women’s College Hockey, they thought of me. That wasn’t me being cocky, it was just the truth. Little girls wore braids in their hair like mine to our games and competitors wore looks of despair when they saw me across from them on the ice. It was an amazing feeling, watching something I’d worked so hard for play out. But I was well aware that talent never came without a price. Mine was the nearly soul crushing pressure I felt to not fail.

No. Failure wasn’t an option. Not only because my team was depending on me, but also because I knew there were scouts in the audience scoping out talent for next year’s Olympics. The next step in my career that the entire college circuit had been discussing. Most of all, Coach Abernathy. He’d been drilling the importance of this game into my head all week.

I glided down the ice, my skates landing smooth each time despite the grooves and indents put there from the period. I could feel the sweat collecting on my forehead, trickling down the side of my face, and the way my chest heaved with effort as I made my way closer to the goal.

When you scored three goals in one game, that was a hat trick. One of the rarest moves in hockey, and I was going for my third one of the season. Two alone was insane, but three…I’d solidify my legacy. There’d be no way for the Olympic committee to ignore me.

The roar of the crowd echoed off the doming walls, getting louder the closer I skated towards the opposing net. Tuning them out, I focused my attention ahead, towards the goalie who was already starting to square up, preparing for me.

I could’ve laughed, practically imagining her sweating bullets. She wasn’t ready for me. But it wasn’t her fault. No one was.

I hoped the announcer had my goal music cued up, because I was about to make a massive--

Out of nowhere, it felt like I’d been hit by a car. My body slammed against the wall with no time to brace for impact and a grunt tore from my lips before the wind was knocked out of me. My stick fell out of my hands, spinning across the ice followed shortly by my glove. My helmet went in the other direction as I crashed down onto the ice.

Fucking ow.

“Oh my God, I hit Katniss Everdeen,” I heard the girl gasp above me as several pairs of skates came into view. She was practically giddy as she said it again.

“I hit Katniss Everdeen.”

“Say it again and I’ll hit you,” I heard Glimmer, my left wing say.

Madge, my other teammate crouched down in front of me, a worried look on her face despite the heavy gear covering half of it.

“Katniss, are you okay?”

I was fine. The bruise on my ribs was going to hurt like a bitch in the coming days, but nothing I couldn’t survive.

It was my ego that was damaged beyond repair.

I was not the type of player who got knocked on their ass, gear spread out across the ice. I was the player who did that to other people. The one they based all of their drills and practices around before matching up against Capitol.

The bitch who knocked me down was never going to forget that moment.

Not that I could blame her. Neither was I.

Game Changers series by Rachel Reid - Heated Rivalry is one of my favourite books full stop, and I really like its sequel, Long Game, but my other favourite from this series is Role Model. I've read them allllll more than once though. It's embarrassing how many times I've read Heated Rivalry. Maybe seven times?? It's not "maybe seven times", it's definitely seven times, I've got the Goodreads data to prove it, but anyway.

Scoring Chances series by Avon Gale - Minor League hockey. Did I know what that was before reading this? I mean, I know nothing. But I DO know what minor league hockey is now. My favourite of these is Breakaway, the first one.

CU Hockey series by Eden Finley and Saxon James - College hockey.

Puckboys series by Eden Finley and Saxon James - NHL spinoff of CU Hockey. These two series are pretty fun.

I have some mixed feelings for this one. I liked this but it also felt like it didn’t keep my attention in some places. I think that was mostly down to me being wrapped up in the other book that I was reading at the same time.

I really liked that Foster was out as bisexual (at least at his college and to his hockey team) and was so completely smitten with nerdy, sweet Zach. I loved that they had a really great banter together and that they were both so determined to not mess around with each other for the sake of Seth (Zach’s bff and Fosters twin brother). I also loved that Seth was hesitant about them getting together at first but was onboard once he saw them together. This was sweet and steamy and I think I’m giving this four stars.

Puck Drills & Quick Thrills by Eden Finley

This book, the final installment of the CU Hockey series, follows Westly, an NHL star turned college coach and legal guardian of his five younger half-siblings, and Jasper, a math professor who doesn't like jocks. I was a little hesitant; the "I don't like jocks" thing is not really for me in a lot of sports romances, but I was pleasantly surprised that that aspect was over pretty fast. What really sold me on this was basically that Westly is a hot mess. You already get the impression in the previous installment that Westly is in way over his head with his siblings, and it worked there to emphasize Asher's hidden qualities because he was the one providing emotional and practical support to his siblings where from his perspective, Westly was mostly taking care of physical needs. In this book, it becomes apparent that Westly's really, really trying, he just doesn't know how, which is not at all surprising given the circumstances, and it's heartwarming to see how he improves with his siblings over the course of the book. It's also what makes the relationship with Jasper really work, because it's so clear that Jasper provides the emotional support Westly needs to be in a place to take care of others. The added sexual component of the caretaking also really worked for me, ngl. All in all, it's a very adult romance, which is maybe more telling about me as a reader, but there you go. Sick of being asked if I could be gay by ex-girlfriends, friends, and even my parents, I join a gay dating app to prove a point.

I don’t expect to find what’s always been missing. A real connection.

The problem is, I’m too scared to meet him in person. He’s a hockey player, and I fear when he finds out my twin plays for the NHL, I’ll be overshadowed by my overachieving brother. Again.

My Review: 5/5 Stars

Cohen and Seth's turn and it was so good! Seth is really tired of everyone questioning his sexuality. It's hard enough for him to figure it out, he doesn't really appreciate everyone's opinion. So when his latest girlfriend breaks up with him, he can't help but blurt out a legitimate reason why. And is surprised when she gives him some pretty solid insight. This leads to creating an online dating profile. He can figure out his sexuality and get that emotional connection first before actually meeting anyone in person. It takes off the pressure of the physical parts of the relationship, while also getting to know someone. Too bad online dating isn't easy. At least until he meets Richie. Richie aka Cohen has come to learn that perhaps kissing your guy best friend in high school isn't exactly normal. And he is having his own struggle of figuring out his identity. And when his best friend suggests a dating app, he goes for it. And meets Seth. But he doesn't know it is Seth. Seth isn't keen on releasing his name and Cohen calls him Einstein. And everyone on campus calls Richie by his last name Cohen. So when his profile says Richie, it's safe to say Seth has no clue. As they spend months and months texting and getting to know one another, they start to realize that perhaps they do have a connection. But both are willing to take it slow as they figure themselves out. And when it comes close to wanting to meet... well, it's not in the way either expect! I loved their story! Each of them have a journey to find out who they are and what they want. And when they get to know someone and connect, they start to realize that gender doesn't matter for either. It's really who that person is inside. Such a sweet story! Seth and Cohen fit so well together even when they crossed paths before knowing who other truly was. Loving this series and I'm on to the next one!

Thanks for the tag @everythingbutcoldfire, I actually finished this one instead of getting halfway through and then leaving it in my drafts

Relationship status: happily single

Favourite colour: emerald green

Favourite food: mashed potatoes (when I was a kid the only thing I had planned for my wedding was that there would be mountains of mashed potatoes) Also a really excellent fish especially catfish, tuna, or salmon. I also grew up in a place with excellent trout, reddish, drum, and shrimp so those are all very nostalgic for me.

Song stuck in your head: nothing currently stuck in there but there are two that I have been playing in repeat which is unusual for me. Both are remixes, I'm Good (Blue)/Bebe Rexha, David Guetta and Shrekinem (Vavo mashup). Both of them just tickle my brain in a very pleasant way.

Last thing you googled: "team rocket", I dressed up as James for Halloween and wanted to see some poses

Favourite time of day: afternoon/evening aka the time when all the work is done for the day and I can veg out

Dream trip: I really really want to rent a boat and sail around the Mediterranean for a couple of weeks stopping at random islands

Last book/fic you read: Currently listening to the CU Hockey audio book series by Eden Finley and Saxon James. Each book is a smutty romance between two queer hockey players. I started crying when I got to the one with a demisexual lead because I wasn't expecting that.

Last book/movie you enjoyed: I will answer both. Last movie is RRR, I had heard it was great and a wild rise so I watched it blind and I loved it so much. The violence in the beginning made me very uncomfortable but I kept watching and did not regret it. I will not spoil it but this is the kind of movie where the protagonist punches tigers and also has time for a dance break in the middle. Just watch it. Last book is The Lies of Locke Lamora, I feel in love with the fantasy world based on Venice. Also Locke is somehow both a bit of a mary sue (i love a mary sue sometimes what can i say) but also things kept getting worse and worse for him that I didn't know how he was possibly going to make it out.

Last book/movie you hated: it is not so much that I hated these but I have complicated feelings and lots of opinions/things to say. Thor Love and Thunder felt like Taika didn't really know what story to tell so he just had a bunch of fun with his friends on set instead. Peter Darling frustrated me so much I wrote a whole essay about it. I loved so much about it and the things it set up were so compelling but it never followed through on any of those ideas. There were narrative conflicts that were completly ignored and the ones that did get resolved had zero build up. I finished this book feeling so unsatisfied it was painful.

Favourite thing to cook/bake: probably baked catfish or chocolate pie, also @beedragony taught me how to make esfiha and I have been making it a lot lately

Favourite craft to do in your free time: writing and bookbinding :)

Most niche dislikes: soft, fluffy pillows? Idk I like a firm squishy one

Opinion on circuses: oh my mom hated the circus, zoos too, because of the exotic animals being in captivity. My dad would take us by himself and she would stay at home. My feelings aren't as strong as hers but I don't particularly like the traditional circus either. I do love cirque du soleil though, I just find it to be amazing story telling!

Do you have a sense of direction and if not what’s the worst way you’ve gotten lost?: I do have a good sense of direction and one of the first things I do when I get to a new place is figure out which direction is north and some kind of orienting marker like a river or landmark. When we would travel to foreign countries as a kid my mom never trusted my directions but I was always right and now she doesn't even question it. None of that stops me from using my gps everytime I get in the car though which drives my dad crazy for some reason 😆
