hear me out, what about a fengqing medieval au. feng xi/fem mu qing. i dont have kingdom names or anything yet. also slight ooc for the last part princess mu qing in all her cold and sarcastic splendour and feng xin being her bodyguard. they bicker constantly, if it weren't for feng xin's background as a commoner, they would both be seen as lovers. little do they know, feng xin is the crown prince of a distant kingdom to spy on the royal family (bc feng xin's kingdom and mu qing's kingdom aren't on good terms). but he ends up falling in love with mu qing, which he finds kinda odd since he has a fear of women. since mu qing is a fucking bitch to everyone, the king finally gives up on finding a suitor for her until the king has the idea to hold a joust for his daughter's hand. promising that if they win his daughter's hand in marriage and a huge fucking dowry since almost all the kingdoms have heard of her insufferable attitude and constant eye rolling. because of the promise of the huge dowry, all the princes come from all over to win this joust. mu qing isn't told of this until the day of since they know that she'll do something to sabotage or run away with the aid of feng xin. but mu qing learned of the tournament beforehand, and she's ridiculously calm about it, or at least feng xin thinks, but he finds her brekaing down in tears and they talk for a bit and he vowes to somehow save her from this fate, however that may be. mu qing is skeptical since only those of royal backgrounds can compete, but she trusts him wholeheartedly and agrees to stay calm and trust in him. feng xin then asks for a few days of leave, mu qing is desperate and suspicious but agrees. the day of the tournament arrives and feng xin still hasn't returned, mu qing's nerves are as taut as a wire. her maids dress her in her finest gown and jewellery to sit in the stands and observe the princes jousting for her hand. all the princes are extremely good at jousting, but one shines above all. defeating everyone with such ease. they're rumoured to be the crown prince of the kingdom of southeast, who's straightforward nature angers those, they're apparently quick to anger and curse excessively over everything. no one can verify the rumours since the prince refuses to speak or remove their helmet in public. their identity being a mystery. if the rumours are true, mu qing would rather die than marry someone like the crown prince. as the tournament progresses, mu qing can't help but feel uneasy as the mysterious prince wins victory after victory. finally leading to the finals, the two finalists ready to joust. when given the word they start, the rumoured crown prince knocks down his opponent immediately earning a swift and easy victory. the king announces that the enigmatic prince has won, but in order to meet his bride he must remove his helmet. the prince easily agrees, after refusing the entire tournament. he removes his helmet to reveal that he is indeed the rumoured crown prince but also feng xin, the princess's bodyguard. mu qing is incredibly surprised, rising from the stands with shaky legs to meet her soon-to-be husband. when she gets over the initial shock, she restrains the urge to run to feng xin and wrap her around them. he gets on his knees in front of her, any sense of tiredness seeming to have vanished as he kneels for his bride and his princess, last but not least the love of his life. "Your highness, the princess..." he murmurs, kissing her hand. "your lowly servant wishes you to seek your hand in marriage. i promise to love you til the end of my life." mu qing nods mutedly, blushing as she whispers softly. "i accept..." the king and the rest of the court is in shock, the bodyguard that the princess had always bickered with had turned out to be the crown prince of the southeast. when mu qing and feng xin wed, they would unify the two kingdoms. of course restoring and repairing the wounds of the past would take ages, but the two kingdoms would be united in love and harmony.

Mu Qing feeling more confident like Fu Yao says a lot about his own self-esteem.
In heaven he believes that he must always act with a masked attitude, never being able to act 100% as he wants and say 100% what he thinks. When he was a servant of Xie Lian, he thought the same way. In the heavens he has power, but he still acts like that young servant boy, as if he's still walking on eggshells.
Mu Qing knows that Xie Lian is trustworthy, but he believes that "Mu Qing" isn't trustworthy enough.
The persona "Mu Qing" grew up as a survivor, needing to calculate his steps and keep his real thoughts, not because of Xie Lian, but 'cause of the monarchy and even 'cause of Feng Xin, and this ended up "spilling out" (soaking wet, tbh) at Xie Lian.
The "Mu Qing" persona is the "superego" and "ego", while the "Fu Yao" persona is the "id" and "ego". Both exist and are real, but one has learned to camouflage himself, while the other sees no need to camouflage himself and acts without a filter as he want.
If Mu Qing had gone as "Fu Yao" to visit Xie Lian in his palace when he was arrested, I doubt that Mu Qing wouldn't have been able to say everything he wanted as he wanted, and I doubt he wouldn't have asked a thousand questions about "What do you mean you're Guoshi Fang Xin?? Who would have thought that the perfect crown prince would be capable of such a trick", and he wouldn't even say that with the intention of being mean, but to make fun of a friend, especially 'cause he wouldn't have abandoned Xie Lian (he no longer sees himself in that obligation).
Mu Qing's mood is sour, he isn't gentle at all, and he's very sincere when he's like Fu Yao (and he's already very sincere like Mu Qing, the difference is that as Fu Yao he has the courage to say what the persona Mu Qing keeps). But since he was always looked at in a bad light, no matter how hard he tried to prove himself, it wouldn't be enough.
However, his acidity isn't that of someone who hates everything and everyone, but rather that of a typical tsundere who was rejected and stepped on by many and deep down he just wanted to be friends with the person he admired most. So much so that with Xie Lian he's always willing to help and gossip, while with Feng Xin he began to feel free to pick fights and provoke when he feels like it (something he was unable to do when he was the servant Mu Qing).
Of course, Mu Qing had his moments of aversion and envy, especially with Hong-er, but I won't talk about that, 'cause it still generates a lot of fights and I don't want to deal with that anymore.
However, by this I mean that Mu Qing is a very, very normal person, and he's much more like a scared kitten showing his claws than anything else monstrous. With Xie Lian, after accepting the hug, he lies down, rolls over and purrs, while with Feng Xin he hits, growls, scratches and bites, but only 'cause he's bored.

I desperately need more fics showcasing Xianle culture or the fact that it's old and Xianle Trio and Hua Cheng really remember it (and the ghost lady)
Examples:
At some festival (in Heaven?) there is a song played on instruments with no singing, nobody knows there even are words to it until Xie Lian starts humming them
Translator spell stops working one day and the newer gods can somewhat understand each other but they don't know what the older gods ( trio, Pei Ming etc) are really saying
Feng Xin and Mu Qing slowly forgetting Xianle language over the years and not being able to speak it to Xie Lian later (+ if they relearn it with him so it isn't too sad)
There is a fairytale about a beautiful prince and his good and brave deeds and nobody realises that it's about Xie Lian before his ascension (+ the fairytale mentions some Xianle traditions and everybody is like 'why did they do X in the fairytale?' 'i don't know' and Feng Xin or Mu Qing replying 'oh it's because Y')
And of course some really specific wedding traditions for Hualian wedding ❤️

Mu Qing: That's a hospital gown!

Ship Children drawing!
Xie Shujing and Xie Aibing were surprisingly the first ones to ever enter heaven. Nobody knew if they ascended or not, but one thing Xie Lian knew for sure is that when they showed up in front of him he didn't know if he was supposed to feel joy or sadness.
Xie Shujing gained the 'nickname' of the Sliver sun General
Xie Aibing gained the 'nickname' of the golden rose General
Tumblr media
Funfacts about the design: They only really wear red when in heaven. They also borrow some design elements from Hua Cheng because they miss him. Also no one in the family wants to come up to heaven.
Xie Aibing looks composed because she tries to be very polite but she's the 'nicest' among her siblings.
Xie Shujing had to be pinned down to make his hair look nice. Since he has a 'pretty' face he looks more worried than angry.

tw for suicide mentions + spoilers for TGCF's novels, mainly 6.
thinking about how mu qing and feng xin have NO clue that xie lian tried to kill himself and it had me thinking about what IF they eventually found out. probably after the novels have officially ended and they're all together as friends again.
XL still wears his bandages around his throat even though he doesn't have his cursed shackle anymore and they find it a bit odd. they ask once or twice and he's quick to change the subject so they don't push any further. this goes on for MONTHS until they go out on an adventure / mission together.
the xianle trio were off to solve some sort of mystery and XL gets in a fight. it results in the trio's win, of course, but the bandage around XL's throat comes undone. the white cloth unravels in front of their eyes and what they see immediately is setting alarms off in their head. a dark purple bruise is embedded into his skin and the trio immediately are jumping to conclusion, assuming hua cheng had done something.
XL is quick to deny those accusations while still trying to avoid the subject entirely, but it doesn't work well. eventually, he breaks.
"Ah- it's nothing to worry about, really! After mother and father died I foolishly tried to join them in the afterlife. It's stupid, I know- gods can't die, after all. Haha! It's nothing to worry about, though."
and the thick silence that ensues is SUFFOCATING for XL. he's concerned he'll be judged and perhaps lose his two friends once again. that doesn't happen, however, and instead there's this look of guilt on their expression that cannot be matched by anyone else. it was clear that they were blaming themselves for leaving XL even though it obviously wasn't their fault.
and then they go home and have tea together and cuddle and everything is fine. (it isn't.)
