I’ve Always Loved You

So the script leaks today had me in my feels again, so here’s some post 15x18 pain for you all. 

Credit to @fandomstuff67 for some of these ideas, and thank you for ranting with me tonight. 

The tears had stopped streaming down Dean’s face, but dried lines were left on his cheeks in their place. He could taste the saltiness of them as he took another swig of his beer. He had finished off the last of the whiskey an hour ago, shards of the bottle lay scattered on the floor; the aftermath of glass hitting the wall of the room. Dean sat in a chair that creaked when he moved, the worn blue fabric tearing at the seams on the seat and the arms. Before him were monitors which displayed the images from the security cameras in the bunker, but there was only one he was focused on. 

The small screen showed an empty room, until moments later when Dean and Castiel burst through the door. Dean watched as the memory played on the monitor. Cas reaching into Dean’s back pocket to retrieve his knife, then using it to cut his hand and draw the sigil on the door, Dean can feel the relief all over again from when Billie’s hold on his heart was broken. The images that flashed across the screen before him had no color, but Dean could see Castiel perfectly. His bright blue eyes filled with tears as he told Dean about his worth, the way he changed Castiel, made him care about humanity, and then confessed his love. The ultimate sacrifice. Still no tears, he truly had cried them all out watching the events of that night replay over and over again. 

Dean rewound the tape, just before Cas said those three words. Three little words that Dean never knew could mean so much. Three words that would save the world. Three words that would be cause for a sacrifice. “I love you.” Castiel’s voice echoed through the empty room where Dean sat. He rewound it again. 

“I love you.”

Rewind.

“I love you.”

Rewind.

“I love you.”

An endless cycle of rewinding and listening. Dean rewound the tape once more, this time watching himself on the screen as Cas said those words. He stood there like a fool, mouth clenched tight, he knew well what was happening, and he wanted nothing more than to say it back. “I love you too!” he wanted to scream, but he stood there in shock, thinking that maybe if he didn’t say it back then The Empty wouldn’t take him. Maybe it wouldn’t take his angel. But it took Castiel anyway, and he died not knowing that Dean loved him with every fiber of his being. 

Rewind. Dean finishes the last of his beer and lets the bottle clatter to the ground beside the dozens of others. He’s exhausted. Exhausted from crying, from living in a world where Castiel isn’t. Dean pauses the tape before it gets to those three words again and pulls out his phone. Camera faced at the screen, Dean presses record and then unpauses the video. “I love you.” That’s all Dean wanted, he wanted those three words in his phone so he could listen to them whenever he wanted to. 

Another rewind, this time back to the beginning. Dean grabs another beer from the cooler beside him and fumbles with the cap, he can thank his drunkenness for the struggle. Dean’s throat tightens as he watches this time, fully aware of his feelings as he takes in every word that Cas had said to him. And finally “I love you.” 

Dean struggles to breathe as he chokes out “I love you too, Cas.” He can feel his eyes well up with tears once more as he pauses the video when Castiel’s hand is on his shoulder, leaving a bloody hand print on Dean’s jacket. “I’ve always loved you.” 

Dean rewinds the video over and over, drinking beer after beer until he fades into unconsciousness.

25)    You can only watch one season for the rest of your life. Which one?

god this question tears me apart because part of me wants to say either 9, 10, or 11 just for the angst because... i love angst. 

but, that would be a lie overall. i would watch season 8 for the rest of my life. for sooo many reasons. it has so many good mow eps (hunter heroici) it has goodbye stranger it has the purgatory scenes it has benny it has a great destiel arc, and it has a sam arc still !!! that’s not ignored !!! plus some fantastic crowley moments, one of the best season finales ever, i just love season 8. 

not that there isn’t problems with like the whole conversion therapy thing and the whole cas tells dean he’s suicidal and it’s never addressed... but i can take those problems and resolve them in my head easier than i can with like.. season 9. 

29)   You can cut one character at any point of the show. Who would it be AND what would happen as a result?

i would kill jenny. back in season 1 when she gets turned and you know the best part that would alter LITERALLY nothing until FIFTEEN YEARS LATER cuz she is NOT IMPORTANT but anyway then in 15.20 (aka the ep that didn’t happen) she wouldn’t be able to kill dean and dean wouldn’t die and then cas would be brought back from the empty because we KNOW that happened and then jack would decide being god wasn’t for him and then we get all human team free will in the bunker while amara rules heaven and rowena rules hell. it’s flawless. i’ve fixed everything.
