Right now, most of the US supports poor farm practices. Harmful insecticides and toxic pesticides are sprayed on crops, because they’re planted in a monoculture. Acres and acres of one crop, only invites diseases and pests. And when we take from and till the soil (a huge carbon release) year after year, it goes from a lush nutrient rich quality, to dried up clumps void of life. The government unfortunately subsides these practices, which makes food cheaper, and more ‘affordable’. Support good practice farming, support the building of healthy soil, support biodiversity, & support small scale permaculture. It’s difficult to know how our food is grown, especially when most people buy within their budget & don’t have the means nor capacity to support organic. Let’s prioritize good practice agriculture so it can become accessible to everyone. If you ‘can’, do it for the earth. I know it’s expensive, it’s a lot to ask in this economy we live in. There’s probably so many places you’d rather put your money. But food is life. Know your farmer, and know their practices. Mulching for a Drought-resistant Garden
Temperatures are breaking new records and rains are much needed. In times like these our gardens tend to suffer as well, particularly if we can’t afford to use up all our precious water on them. But there are a number of simple ways to make the garden more tolerant to droughts. The easiest and most effective technique is mulching.
Tumblr media
Keeping the Water from Evaporating
Mulch can be considered anything that you use to cover the ground with, whether it’s woodchips, cardboard, compost, straw, weeds, wooden boards, leaves, even rocks, or a combination thereof. While each type of mulch comes with its own set of pros and cons, one thing they all do, is give the water in the soil another barrier before it evaporates into the air. That is the first and foremost function of mulching the ground. And the effect can be felt immediately: just stick your finger into the ground that’s been covered by a rock: it is going to feel a bit damp, compared to uncovered soil. And this is just the first one of a wide range of benefits.
Tumblr media

The Sponge Effect
While rocks are great at shading the ground, and trapping moisture in the slightly cooler air between them, they don’t actually soak up the water. Organic material, on the other hand, that is anything from straw and leaves to cardboard, can serve as a veritable sponge, keeping the water inside and among its pieces. Though it can still evaporate from there, it happens at a much slower rate than out of the naked ground. During cooler nights and the early morning hours, it can even soak down into the soil, at a rate it can absorb it without being overwhelmed. However, the best thing about organic mulch is that while it decomposes it mixes into the soil, making itself like a sponge for optimal water retention.

A Place to Live a Rich Life
Talking about decomposing, I can’t get around mentioning the incredible diversity of microbes that make up a healthy soil. As you would expect, if you create a moist and protected environment for them, they are going to come from far and near to help decompose your organic mulch, mix it into the ground, and create a rich soil ecosystem. Best of all, you don’t need to do a thing after you’ve established a nice mulched garden bed. Though if you water it on occasion, you will see it thrive even more.

Nutrients Anyone?
If you really want to do everything you can to create a rich soil life, add something nutritious to your soil: some ripe compost, or cow manure. Don’t leave these nitrogen rich materials exposed to the sun either, but make sure it is covered with other layers, such as straw or leaves. This is where a combination of different types of mulch comes in handy, which mulch enthusiasts refer to as “sheet mulching” or more descriptively as “lasagna gardening”.

Living Mulch: Covercrops
What if you the mulch you use to cover your soil with is not made up of dead and decomposing things, but of living and thriving plants? Sure, they use up their own share of water, but what the offer in return makes up for that loss in many ways. First of all, the shade they provide for the ground, and the habitat the create for all kinds of organisms, outweighs that of the best sheet mulched bed. But then we haven’t even talked about their roots, which hold the soil together, along with the moisture trapped inside it, especially if they have fibrous root structures. Since plants also put a lot of effort into reaching water wherever it’s available, they will also pump it from deeper underground into the surface area, along with nutrients. Plants with long taproots are especially good at this. For this reason, it’s good to use mixed covercrops with fibrous roots and taproots.

Just the Tip of the Iceberg
So many benefits to mulching! And originally all we wanted to do was to make the garden a bit more resistant to drought! But this is literally just the beginning. There are so many amazing new levels you can take to mulching, such as Hügelkultur. So it’s safe to say, once you discover the wonderful benefits of mulching, you’ll be likely to take it as far as you can.

the weather sure is... weather lately! i'd say we're fully in fool's spring, but it's getting really close to the average last fall date without any frost in sight. so maybe it came like a month early. ~climate change~
anyway, here's a little tour of some progress!
Tumblr media
the new bed has like 20 plants in it, even though you can only really see a few - things are just barely coming out of dormancy.
tapestrying is in progress! there's still a good bit of covercrop in (largely winter rye), because i want to make sure i have enough plants for coverage and it'll be a bit til my seeds and cuttings grow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so far i've got various thymes, phlox stolonifera, rose vervain, coreopsis 'nana', and some self-heal taken from elsewhere in the yard.
Tumblr media
the first (mostly) perennial bed is doing well, especially that pink moss phlox! the one thing is though, i let things reseed freely and well... i can't say it didn't work, but...
Tumblr media
i have no idea what most of this is. sure i can get some context clues, and there's a few pretty unique seedlings, but it's gonna take a while for me to be able to tell what's what, especially with them so crowded together - i'm kinda thinning them out in places but it's tough. either way, one partridge pea seems to have made 60 or more seedlings, so i'll be a lot more hands-on in my approach this year. funnily enough one of the better-behaved plants was borage, which is typically a bit aggressive.
Tumblr media
serviceberry flowers! hopefully we get to try some berries this year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
kale flowers! turns out you can eat the buds like broccoli raab and they're super tasty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
fothergilla and quince.
Tumblr media
lastly, i bought a mystery "bag o maters" from a grandma at a farm market with a list of what they could be (mostly pretty fun varieties) for $1. i'm not even sure how this happened, nor do i need ten tomato plants, but.... $1. curious to see what we get.

I am grateful to live in such a beautiful part of the world...last night on our walk I kept smelling the most amazing hay like , patchouli laced scent. It was glorious. I kept thinking that I was back in the 60’s wearing my favorite solid hippy chick perfume...does any one remember the Coty Sweet Earth solid perfume compacts? Well I couldn’t figure out what I was smelling until I got around to the front of the lake. It was an enormous patch of Yellow Sweet Clover, a beautiful biennial that is used for forage, cover cropping, conservation, and honey making and of course bouquets... I walked over to admire it and found that it was covered with honeybees, always a good sign. I thanked them for taking me on such a delightful trip down memory lane and went home to enjoy a most delightful and psychedelic sleep. I can’t wait to go back and collect some seeds for my own flowery mead...#flowerymead #flowerymeadow #clover #yellowclover #theschooloftheseasons #livinginseason #seasonalcelebrations #seasonalpriestess #cotysweetearth #bethschreibmangehring #herbanfarmgirl #herbanglow #herbs #covercrops #shakerlakes (at The Herban Inn) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPsrDbmpnc9/?utm_medium=tumblr

Here you see one cover crop mix used at our home farm, Mt. Folly, made of daikon radish, crimson clover, rye and wheat. Except for the radish, the mix will be green and photosynthesize all winter, with the radish breaking hardpan as it grows in the fall and then, on freezing, adding organic matter to the soil.

What is Agroecology? Why is it relevant? _ Agroecology - ag·ro·e·col·o·gy - in short, is a transdisciplinary approach that aims to sustain production, conserve natural resources, and maintain social equity. _ It was with great pleasure and honor that I was able to represent my lab today at the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources (BANR) of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) 75th Anniversary Event. We put together a poster addressing 3 of the 5 breakthroughs that are ways to take agricultural and natural resources research to the next level for sustainable benefits in Florida and beyond. _🐊 #agroecology #agroecosystems #transdisciplinary #sustainability #conservation #socialequity #BANR #NASEM #UFIFAS #UFTREC #thegatorgood #agriculturalresearch #datascience #moreresearch #moredata #moreplants #agronomy #covercrops #greenmanures #biomass #soilorganicmatter #soilmatters #protectthesoil #livingsoil #soilmicrobiome (at Reitz Union Hotel) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7ZMmDxH5EW/?igshid=9mw4kehqr8tl
