Chaco Canyon is one of the most inaccessible National Parks in the country. Although it is well-known, there is no easy way to get there and there are no amenities once you arrive. The closest town is 60 miles away. There’s a gas station on the main road, near where you turn off on Highway 550. That’s the last opportunity for gas, water, snacks, sunscreen and supplies.
Furthermore, there is no good road to Chaco Canyon. Bluntly, it feels like an Indiana Jones expedition the moment you turn off the main road. The jolting journey evolves from a deceivingly decent dirt road to not so good to face rattling off your skull for a couple of miles. Also, there's a large wash on the way, which can become impassable during heavy storms. Don’t be daring, because there’s no cell phone reception either.

Notes from the Field
I've got a six-page "short take" article in the latest issue of Railroad History (no. 229). The subject is some of the remaining semaphore signals on the Santa Fe Railway in New Mexico; it's a follow-up to my much longer 2019 article in the same publication (no. 221).
Most of the aging semaphore signals of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway have come down in recent years, replaced by modern devices. But eleven of the 100-year old sentinels soldier on with no replacement signals positioned adjacently. My article provides the location of all, images of several, along with the appearance of Amtrak's Southwest Chief, which is the only train on the line currently tripping these ancient implements.
Three images by Richard Koenig; all taken April 2023.

Magdalena is also known for its beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The small community is nestled at the base of the Magdalena Mountains at an elevation of 6,548 feet. Mines in Kelly helped to make Magdalena a boom town in the 1800's. As the mining boom came to an end, the ranching industry rose to the fore. Starting in the late 1890's to the early 1970's Magdalena was the end of the trail for cattle drives that went as far as Springerville, AZ.

Macaws, LC Site, NM. Some zoomorphs that are generally thought to depict macaws. The Pueblo Culture likely traded for macaws with southern tribes, based on macaw skeletons that were found at Pueblo sites. There’s even speculation that live birds were transported over 1,000 miles from Mesoamerica to be bred in Pueblo cities. At Chaco Canyon, 14 macaw skeletons were found in a single room with a large deposit of guano on the floor, suggesting the room was an aviary.
The hooked beak and prominent tail feathers on these glyphs look like macaws to me, especially Slide 1, which has a ceremonial feel to it with the pair of birds. The glyphs in this area are mostly attributed to the Pueblo Culture (primarily Pueblo IV 1350-1600 CE).
