Finished my Season 10 Joel cosplay!!!
I wanted to incorporate his build style into the design for the costume, so it’s cyberpunk with Sakura blossoms! I’ve also got honeycomb smocking for the cuffs to tie in his bee farm. That took forever to do but I just had to include it!
I’m so glad I got this done in time since the blossoms bloomed early this year and I really wanted photos with some pink blossoms! I’ll probably post some bts and more details about this design but I just love how this turned out!
It’s so crazy to think I’ve been watching Smallisbeans content off and on since the days of CrazyCraft. I’m so glad Hermitcraft/the life series brought me back, I’ve missed the chaos.

Hi Tumblr! You get rights!
[aka. I wanna show off my Rae cosplay because GAAAAAH I am so happy with how it turned out!]
For this cosplay I made everything except the wig, ears, leggings and shoes - in about two months give or take [making vlog soon to come]. I made the bracers, sewed the shirt and cape and corset, embroidered the corset, made the horns and bound the Field Notes journal myself. And not gonna lie, it's one of my best builds I've ever done I think. Gosh, I'm so happy it's done though, I've been wanting to be able to share this forever! Really hoping I can take it to a proper location shoot too at some point...

What could possibly be the reason for the change in the masquerade dress. It’s Downright ugly now. It’s weird since not Lucy and holly had normal ones from the start. At least based of on picture from before the reopening.
Beats me. I look at what the European Star Princess costumes USED to be in the 1990...
Tumblr media
...and then how some of the modern UK versions look...
Tumblr media
...and I am saddened. Annoyed. Offended. Why the bad bodice fits and lackluster decorations, why the neon colours, why the half-assed sleeves, why, why, WHY?
This is not due to the lack of talent of the costume makers. I see stuff they make which is A++++, so this is what they have been instructed to make. I have heard many different explanations as to why - that producer Cameron Mackintosh wanted Christine to stand out more and ordered bold colours, that the original beaded bodices were fragile during Raoul's lifts, that they were too time consuming (and hence expensive), that the new costumes are more danceable for the Christines.
Everything is probably correct. But that doesn't take away the fact that THEY LOOK LACKLUSTER. 100% Maria Bjørnson would not approve. The costume never looked like this during her lifetime. There were many other variations and experiments, in colours, silhouettes and details, but never neon colours and scarce decorations. And I KNOW they can make way better stuff. Stock costume or not, this is the UK costume Claire Lyon donned in the World Tour revival, which shows a recent UK costume at its best:

Still very bright in colours, but lovely bodice fit, fully beaded, and a bodice perfectly matching the skirt. THIS is art. More of this. Puh-lease.

The gauntlets for my Guild Wars 2 cosplay are done, other than sanding and painting! I still intend to finish this costume lol, it's just taking me extra time because life. All pieces are made of worbla over foam or cardboard, or by itself. The gloves are made from the same fabric (hand-dyed by me) as the rest of the costume. Everything is fully articulated to move with my hand and arm. The only armor piece I have left is the upper arm. Then it's just wiring, sanding, painting, and styling the wig! Woo! I'm pretty excited for this cosplay. Not only is it the most complex and difficult costume I've built, but it has also been with me through some tough times. At some point, I'll have to put all the pieces on and share some pictures :-)

It’s done!
After ten days of work (and another three for a waistcoat I’m not that happy with; see below), the NotD coat is finished! Woohoo!
Overall, I’m really pleased with it, which is just as well as it’s taken so much time (and grief!). I worked out that if I’d paid myself minimum wage for all the hours I put in the labour alone would amount to about £500. One of my ex colleagues used to suggest I set up a dressmaking business and wouldn’t believe me when I told her it wouldn’t be cost effective as the amount of labour involved would make everything too expensive.
Anyway, I have taken quite a lot of photos, so you can see how it turned out:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This got long so I’ll stick the rest behind a cut.
I ended up adding some extra fabric to the tails, as they were sticking out at an angle and didn’t look right. It means an extra seam but it’s not that visible and I much prefer it this way, with more fullness at the back (and it properly covers my bum, which is very important!):
Tumblr media
Though it looks fine on the dummy when I put it on I’m not convinced I didn’t raise the back waist seam a bit too far, but it’s sitting on my waist so… *shrugs* I don’t often look at myself from behind so it probably doesn’t matter that much.
After sewing on the two back buttons I changed my mind and went with the covered ones in the end, deciding on reflection that those I bought last week were a bit too pale. They would have fitted better if I’d made the binding more of a contrast (which I’m glad I didn’t as it would have been more obvious that it’s not exactly perfect in some places). I had to make the buttonholes manually as there was no way the automatic buttonhole foot wouldn’t get caught at some point. I haven’t sewn any that way since I first started out six years ago and was using my mother’s old machine! All the ones I’ve owned have had an automatic function so I had to practice a bit to remind myself how to do it. Thankfully they’ve turned out well.
I also solved the problem of the gap between the collar and lapel by stitching them together. It works a treat!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though I’ve made a miniature version for Eight Bear, this is the first time I’ve tried to replicate an existing garment for myself (the Dark Eyes coat was an interpretation rather than a direct copy), and I am actually really proud that I’ve ended up with something that does look pretty much like the original, as well as Steven Ricks’s recreation, which has been a definite influence!
That said, while the coat has turned out well I’m not massively pleased with the waistcoat. I decided to make another one on a whim as I had a more accurate pattern and saw what looked like an ideal fabric but I don’t like it all that much now it’s done. It was hell to put together because the satin just started disintegrating and still is; I’ve had to sew up holes in both the pockets because the seams have just frayed straight through and I’d put them together before I thought of stabilising the edges with interfacing. It’s another men’s pattern and I should have made some adjustments but after doing so much to the coat I really couldn’t be bothered and just put it together as it was; I should really have added some length, which is ironic given the amount I had to remove from the coat, and perhaps levelled it off at the front. Consequently it’s not a great fit and sits really awkwardly on Stella as you can see, though that may have something to do with the fact that I put the buttonholes on the wrong side out of habit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a watch on the end of the chain this time, because the pockets are real! I quite like the look of the waistcoat undone when I put it on, but done up not so much. There’s a lot of spare fabric in the front for some reason, which I tried to hide by smoothing it under the collar and then stitching the collar down. It hasn’t entirely worked, and it doesn’t help that the brocade is such a bouncy fabric and doesn’t press well.
Putting it all together I do think it looks better on Stella than me, but that’s probably because I rarely wear so many layers! I wish I had a better backdrop than the bedroom but it’ll have to do:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe I could unbutton the waistcoat and untuck the shirt and be Eight having a casual day? I love the coat but I do feel much more comfortable wearing it over a t-shirt and jeans!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I just have to wait until some cooler weather to be able to put it into use. My only gripe is that there are no external pockets, either on the original or the pattern I used! Surely you’d think the Doctor would need pockets?

My Handmade Sailor Star Fighter Cosplay!!
This design is a mashup of the Classic 90's anime, the Sailor Moon Musical Sera Myu, and a little bit of Cosmos/the manga thrown in! I felt like taking a bit from each would make it an awesome representation of all versions. It also helped me conceptualize a design that I felt would be more beautiful irl and on my own figure.
The colored tiara and hair tie calls back to Cosmos, and the ear piece with the star mic is also more manga accurate:
Tumblr media
Most of the costume is based on the Sera Myu version since it offered the most support as well as a level of coverage I was comfortable with. I opted for thicker holographic straps and higher waisted shorts that both looked more flattering and made the suit feel more battle ready:
Tumblr media
I used the coloring from the 90's Anime, leaning towards an ultra shiny black rather than a dark blue/navy. The entire look was based on the holographic effect that the fabric I used had, so each piece incorporated that flare. I also wanted to keep the original v shaped design on the shorts, and while the gold belt that the Musical version featured worked to break up the fabric, I opted to avoid it and instead put in slits to offer more mobility while helping the bottoms flare & look smaller.
Tumblr media
I stayed pretty classic for all the props, using a 3D rendering designed by @digitalauge-de as a reference alongside official artwork and proplicas I have:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Sailor Star Yell prop features remote operated color changing LED lights inside. I'll do a separate post breaking down the Sailor Star Yell prop, earpiece, and brooch later!
I'll also do a more in-depth breakdown of drafting & constructing the costume itself at some point, but there's so much behind the scenes material to go through it'll take a hot second to organize it into one post.

I bit the bullet and I bought another batch of material for my larp costume, including the damn buckles...
Why pretty buckles are so expensive?
I still need a fair bit more but at least now have no excuse to not start working on this thing.
The plan is great. Let's see about the execution
I still need to figure out how to clone the caftan below ^^'

Alright y'all costumers, cosplayers, and apparel makers; what's the best way to make a corset?
I'm trying to make this dress into a reality
Tumblr media
I've got the petticoat and hoop finished and the circle skirt draped and ready to sew, but this is my first time making a boned garment of any type so I need all the advice I can get!
I'm planning on using simplicity's 1183 corset pattern as a base and adding the straps and silver ribbon later.

Weird Al scrubs I sewed when my roommate and I saw him in Melbourne last year, (he was lit as all geddup) I hand sewed these because every time I go to use a sewing machine I can’t find a part or it doesn’t wanna work or it’s in my folks room while my dad is taking a nap I swear it’s as bad as can openers! (Every can opener I’ve ever used except one has broken, we are talking tens of can openers, I also have horrible luck hearing tomato soup, these are my only flaws and none of em are my fault)
Anyhewwww it took SO LOOOONG UGHHH I was finishing the Madonna scrub gown the day before, and the scrub caps, I think I was trying to refrain from hot glue, but after much frustration I finished em, and I added pockets to the pants BEAT DECISION IVE EVER MADE I debated not doing em cos I SOOOOO didn’t wanna but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t so I was like go big or go home and those bad boys fit my keys, phone, wallet, a whole ass shirt, two bigass stickers, my friends stuff, makeup, so much!
ADD POCKETS TO YOUR COSTUMES!!!!!
It’s so useful and you don’t have to worry about a bag affecting your look, it’s one of my fav things about my beej costume, I had so much crap in my pockets, aaaaand it’s perfect for putting all the stuff you inevitably buy at cons, or shove a tote bag in it, or spiders and business cards (I did that for beej)
Oh also the glasses are $9 blue light ones from Kmart, fabulous for costumes, and the stache is alcohol activated paints and I curled my hair with straws overnight while it was damp, add mouse and a chemical warfare amount of hairspray, give your roommate asthma, also bobbypins!
Learn from my mistakes, I made em so you don’t have to, any questions ask away!
Ps due to the hotel having a distinct lack of chainsaws for photo ops I’m holding a can opener (in other pics I’m holding a saucepan and a broken electric toothbrush:)

Ears! I tried to use the ball joints from a phone stand to get poseability but they poked up behind the sculpts raised bits too much, so back to plain galvanised wire. I’m so happy how the paint work came out on them too.
