Saw this gorgeous hat at a vintage store (first pic) it said something like “Victorian mourning, Beetlejuice inspired” on the tag, it also said like 200 and something bucks on the tag and I was like @shabby7887 put the hat down, back away slowly, I’ll make it for ya I need another project
And thus the Lydia hat was born, I used two hats, one for the head piece and one for the brim because no single hat was perfect, (the brims are sewn together and the top Bron mad a seam at the back which I strategically covered in tile n flowers) the tulle is tacked on in strategic places with thread and I sewed all the roses on and used hot glue to make sure they didn’t come apart, think I used hot glue for the smaller roses because they were made of foam and I didn’t want em to rip, and I made the handbook from one of those paintable fake books and some ribbon for the strap and closure
I asked if C-town could take a couple pics so I could post em but instead she did a full blown Lydia photo shoot cos she’s extra!
Check out her art n her makeup she’s so talented!!!

So I saw rocky horror with my friend last march, it was AMAZING Anyhew we all dressed up and I made Magentas space suit from the end of the movie
It’s a cheap yoga mat, I made a mock-up on several bits of newspaper taped together and tried it on and then cut it out of the mat, then I covered it in a sequin fabric (because I didn’t want to quilt the thing, my fingies don’t deserve that) and i hot glued it on the back of the mat, I cut out the neck hole and glued the fabric to the back there too, the shoulder bits, pauldrons? Yeaheahhhhh pauldrons! Are made of black glitter foam (after several newspaper mock-ups) and got glued together, in the front and back they had a strip attaching them so I could tie em on with a strip of fabric to help keep ‘em in place and to help synch the waist before adding the belt, otherwise it’s soooo hard to fanangle it all, and the cuffs are also foam and hot glue and the jester anklets are glitter aider facing in and then curled down so it shows the glitter side and had some shape, I heated it briefly with a lighter then curled it in itself and let it cool, and I added Velcro dots later on when my mate wore it in a shadow cast because what I did when I wore it was just hot glue it to itself and hope I didn’t destroy em taking em off at home
I made a second costume for the shadow cast for magenta and it was the same but I added a deep v neck.
So it’s really just a lot of newspaper mock ups, try em on, pin them to yourself, measure twice cut once cos crafting can be pricey!
Also you probs need more hot glue sticks than you think
I don’t think I would change anything on the costume it turned out really well but make sure you’re cutting thing out on the correct side of the foam cos otherwise you will end up with two left pauldrons and then you’ll do it once again when you make the second costume, idk how I managed to do it twice but eh you’d never learn if you never made mistakes
Also the yoga mat has a slit cut up the front and back to aid walking and movement, I was worried to add em but I knew if I didn’t need em I could fix the underside with hot glue and foam, if you can repair something don’t be afraid to break it
Oh yeah and I dressed as the usherette to hand out popcorn and my headpiece is glitter foam with a gem either side of Roxy and it’s all hot glued together and I sewed it to a tiara cos I wanted the option of taking it off the tiara for all my tiara needs, the popcorn bucket is a tiny washing basket I nicked from my ma and I added pink tissue paper on the inside and as a fringe and then double sided taped it all together and threaded a long ass bit of ribbon on to it to make a strap, and the collar and cuffs of my dress I sewed on, the cuffs are from my Transylvanian costume because I was warm and my shirt was a lil small (I’m just too buff for sleeves) so I cut off the sleeves, then I used the excess fabric to slap together a collar and I straight up used a mini hair tie to affix a circle of fabric over the button cos it was black, oh and the popcorn letters on the front are glitter foam too!
I make the mistakes so you don’t have to, learn from em, ask me the things :)

I take Christmas REAL SERIOUSLY and if you tell me “festive dress is expected” expect and arch elf on your doorstep
The beret is upholstery velvet because it was the perfect dark green colour and I thought the stiffness would help with the shape, it did but at what cost? My fingies that was the cost, it was so harrrrrd to push through multiple layers of thick ass velvet so that’s a thing I learnt
The ears are multiple layers of latex on these hooky over your real ears elf ears, then dusted with flour (couldn’t find powder works the same) and then spirit gummed to my ears, they came out super realistic cos the seam was in the curve of my ear, I also added a couple coats of alcohol paint to tint them and also some blush, if they were any taller I’d add some cotton to keep the shape but I don’t think I needed to with these ones
I did heavy blush and gold glitter on my cheeks (if I had one I would’ve done a crème blush and added glitter while it was tacky) and some dark eyeliner and curled my hair and promptly messed up the fringe with a clip cos I didn’t want it to touch my face
The shirt is second hand and painted with glitter fabric paint straight from the bottle, I drew it on the shirt first to map it out (use a pencil or chalk) which was suuuuuuuper handy but even still I made mistakes but it’s busy enough that you don’t notice (there’s a beautiful drawing I made of the pattern it took so long to wrap my head around, I traced it on insta)
The necklace was made of the funky bell charms I painted blue and an old necklace I took apart and a bunch of gold beads, the blue paint is an iridescent nail polish with a dry brushing of silver, the tassels are made from a gold trim I cut and rolled into tassels and held in place with a couple stitches and probs some hot glue, I know I sewed em to the beads, I like to think about what’s the most structurally sound way to affix something, it helps with wear and means I don’t have any last minute breaks
Make it strong cos I know I don’t wanna be worrying that my costume is gonna fall apart if I breathe too hard, I wanna run around like a lunatic!
Learn from my mistakes, ask Le questions :)

Weird Al scrubs I sewed when my roommate and I saw him in Melbourne last year, (he was lit as all geddup) I hand sewed these because every time I go to use a sewing machine I can’t find a part or it doesn’t wanna work or it’s in my folks room while my dad is taking a nap I swear it’s as bad as can openers! (Every can opener I’ve ever used except one has broken, we are talking tens of can openers, I also have horrible luck hearing tomato soup, these are my only flaws and none of em are my fault)
Anyhewwww it took SO LOOOONG UGHHH I was finishing the Madonna scrub gown the day before, and the scrub caps, I think I was trying to refrain from hot glue, but after much frustration I finished em, and I added pockets to the pants BEAT DECISION IVE EVER MADE I debated not doing em cos I SOOOOO didn’t wanna but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t so I was like go big or go home and those bad boys fit my keys, phone, wallet, a whole ass shirt, two bigass stickers, my friends stuff, makeup, so much!
ADD POCKETS TO YOUR COSTUMES!!!!!
It’s so useful and you don’t have to worry about a bag affecting your look, it’s one of my fav things about my beej costume, I had so much crap in my pockets, aaaaand it’s perfect for putting all the stuff you inevitably buy at cons, or shove a tote bag in it, or spiders and business cards (I did that for beej)
Oh also the glasses are $9 blue light ones from Kmart, fabulous for costumes, and the stache is alcohol activated paints and I curled my hair with straws overnight while it was damp, add mouse and a chemical warfare amount of hairspray, give your roommate asthma, also bobbypins!
Learn from my mistakes, I made em so you don’t have to, any questions ask away!
Ps due to the hotel having a distinct lack of chainsaws for photo ops I’m holding a can opener (in other pics I’m holding a saucepan and a broken electric toothbrush:)

I got a random vhs as a white elephant gift and my friend was like “oh god lemme take it back so you get something decent” and I was like “oh no you don’t! I’m a crafter this is perfect! I know exactly what I’m gonna make with this!!!”
I put string lights in it (those flimsy copper wire ones, on sale for a buck after Halloween, I impulse bought like 5 packs I wish I got more) initially through the holes in the top as I could only get one screw out of the back, my dad got another couple out but I couldn’t get the back off, hence the top hole entry, but I decided it wasn’t good enough so I kinda just pried up the sides and bent the lights into a C shape so they’d be less visible and jammed em in #percussivemaintenance
Ideally I would’ve printed out a muppets take Manhattan label for the front but I neither had the patience or printer ink to do so, but I had been hoarding keeping a scooby doo sticker because I just knew it’d come in handy (cos I’m actually like so psychic) and bam! Perfect vhs accoutrement!

My beej cosplay, secondhand jacket and pants that I taped off with masking tape (be smart and make the stripes the width of the masking tape, don’t be impatient like me and make them a rulers width wide because you don’t have tape because it will turn out that your ruler is exactly 6ml wider than masking tape and you’ll have to overlap billions of bits of tape, unless you wanna learn how to eyeball 6ml really well)
The stripes are painted on with a mix of paint, glue and water, and yes, that did make the suit crispy but I reckon that’s just points for authenticity, you can’t tell me a quillion year old demon’s suit won’t be crispy. Anyhew then I went at it with Stanley knives, a couple different files and a cheese grater to get that perfect liveddied-in look, and I made some extra tatters and sewed em on to make it as stage accurate as possible because I’m incredibly autistic anal insane detail oriented.
I also went over the whole thing with black, white and grey watered down paint on a stiff brush to speckle it, and added dry brushing and smudges everywhere (I used like 6 billion reference pics) and I added strategic bits of green, some of its hairspray cos I was lazy and the drippiness worked perfectly.
I thought the shirt would be fast, it wasn’t, trying to make the wiggley lines crisp is a pain in the ass, and my roommate made the tie cos I’d spent 50+ hours coated in paint and didn’t wanna, it’s a clip-on, well elastic-on, ever since I hear him described as having “the body of a used car salesman” I’ve been like yes and in my mind a used care salesman would wear a clip on.
My beard is alcohol activated paints (cos I am a chronic face toucher and will smudge everything) and the hair is teased and sprayed green.
Oh and I cut out the right pocket so I could shove a femur down in it juuuust in case someone told me I gave them the creeps.
If I did it again I would do the stripes the width of the tape, expect everything I own to have paint on it, and I’d see a chiropractor because I was hunched over like gollum for like two weeks.
Ps I have polymorph (a thermo plastic/ plastic that becomes mouldable when you heat it up) fangs glued in with denture glue and tinted (because my teeth aren’t perfectly white) with alcohol paints cos my tooth stain had dried out, if you wanna learn how go to YouTube because I’m pretty sure I made them with demon power cos I was method acting
Please learn from my mistakes, I made them so you don’t have to, if you have any questions lmk :)
