Hella Big Skirts panel
Ever wanted to make a hella skirt? Wondering how to keep your hella big skirt puffy? Join cosplayer fabrickind to learn the ins and outs of patterning, sewing, and supporting the large, fluffy skirts of your dreams!
This is just the bare bones of the panel, as many of the examples were elaborated on in-person, and it is just the slides, not any of my notes. It is not meant to be exhaustive or definitive, and is just meant for general advice and suggestion purposes only. If anyone has feedback they would like to give, feel free to do so. That said, I hope that people find this information useful.
Here is a link to a pdf of the presentation. You may download for personal use, but please do not alter the presentation, repost without permission, or do any sort of other unauthorized use. (If you have a question about how you can use this presentation, please send me a message with your question and we can work it out. I promise I’m not scary. ;]) Feel free to reblog this post as much as you want, though. I do these panels and post them because I want the information to be shared.
I hope someone finds this helpful! :]

Ok tumblr you've gotta help me.
Let's say I know absolutely nothing about make-up at all. Zip, zilch. I am a 30-something year old woman who somehow managed to make it this far without owning or using any makeup.
And that I want to wear some for cosplay purposes which will at least vaguely help to make me, a round baby-faced woman, look more masculine.
What should I buy? Preferably the minimum and cheapest as possible?
And like... just how? Like... how?

I cannot tell you, as a long time cosplayer, how much joy it will bring you to go back and make the costume you really wanted to make as a beginner but didn’t have the skill yet. Who cares if the source material is 5 (or 15 or 25) years old? There’s nothing like treating your younger self to a piece of delight and victory. You’ll feel amazing when you look in the mirror. Try it out next year. I guarantee you’ll have a good time.
Don’t have any of those? Go back and find your jankiest early costume where you still love the character but at the time you had no idea what you’re doing. Redo it with all the skill you have now.
It’s the best feeling in the entire cosplay hobby.

Cosplay community this is a cry for help how do i attach horns to my forehead theyre made out of cardboard so preferably a way that i wont have to wash off (at least not with enough water to damage them)
Also i have a very low budget considering the fact that im a teenager who doesn't have an official job yet (so like 15$ cad at most)
Also incase its important theyre like a little less that two inches tall, the base is roughly the size of a toonie (canadian 2$ coin) and the base is also slightly curved to fit my forehead better

Okok so small question for the cosplaying community ; If you have used metal in cosplays before, what kind of metal(s) would you recommend for beginner cosplayers? I wanna try and make an armor, but I'm not sure what I should use. Thank you for reading!!!

In the past, I've tried to open a kofi (where you can accept $3 donations towards your projects) usually with goals in mind for the money that reflect patron interest, but for me it was highly unsuccessful. I've also tried to offer art commissions so that I can afford more materials, and that got me nowhere. I'm wondering what I can do to save money for this cosplay, especially now recently, when I had to turn down going to an event because of the costs. It's the one thing that's making me down, because I'm held back by my poorness. lol I laugh as not to cry. Suggestions from fellow artists in this situation?

Hi! I hope you’re doing well. I’m very very new to cosplaying. I’m currently working on my first cosplay and I was hoping to get some advice? Thank you 💙
Hi love! welcome to this beautiful world! of course! you can ask me whenever you need anything in particular! As general advice you should always remember:
DO NOT COMPARE WITH OTHER COSPLAYERS. Everyone has their own style, some more time and money than others, and some even more experience.
DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED. Sometimes you will think your cosplays do not look good enough. You will get better the more practice you get. as an example take a look at my first fem! ichigo (2022) vs my newest one (2023). Or my first Byakuya (june 2022) vs my Oct 2022 one. It's all about practice I think :3 Of course I still need HELLA practice but I know I'm getting better every day taking baby steps!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Confidence AND practice helps a lot!
3. BE HAPPY. cosplaying is a hobby, something you do to enjoy yourself and be happy. Don't pressure yourself, take your time. Learn from videos, posts. Other cosplayers will be here to help you out!
Please ask as many questions as you want! I love to help :3

Finding Cosplay Photoshoot Locations: Part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
📸Want to do cosplay photoshoots but don't know how to find that perfect place to shoot? This tutorial covers how to brainstorm a location for your shoot, logistical and cost concerns with shoot locations, and how to actually find your dream location.
📸This tutorial can be applied to shoots of all types, including but not limited to self shoots, shoots with friends, and shoots with hired photographers. Self shooting or shooting with friends only requires a camera (a phone works!) and possibly a tripod.
Part 1: Location Types
Coming up with the general type of location you want requires some brainstorming about what you want from the shoot. Think about your specific goals and types of photos you want and how certain types of locations would work for your goal. Remember you can always do multiple shoots for the same costume with different concepts!
For example, if you want big, sweeping shots, you will need a location that allows for wider framing and still looks good, while if you are primarily after shots with closer framing, you can go with a location with only a small usable portion. If you are looking to primarily showcase the costume itself or your posing, a flatter and simpler background works better than a busy background, but if you want cinematic shots or shots where you are existing in the environment as the character, somewhere that can show off the location itself as well as how you exist in it would work better.
Types of Locations
There are three main types of locations for cosplay shoots in relation to the cosplay itself. Of course, you can combine these types and there is a lot of overlap, but thinking of these three location types will help you conceptualize your shoot.
The first type is locations that are similar to something in the series, or an exact location from the series. My cover image is an example of this, where I took photos at the location of the climactic battle of the manga. Most fictional locations don't exist in real life so exactly, however, so think of locations that look similar to where this character might be found. The example on this slide shows a cosplay at a nature preserve with grassy fields and oak trees, which is similar to the locations the character traverses several times throughout the game she is from. This category can also include locations with similar vibes, such as a studio made up to look like a fancy European castle for a character from a series about European royalty, or a shoji screen backdrop for a character who lives in a Japanese-style house.
The second location type is locations with symbolic meaning. These locations showcase something about the themes or character arcs present in the series, and this can be accomplished with anything from specific props and setpieces to the entire background. One shoot I'd love to do with this concept is of Lady Blackpearl staring into a mirror -- this would symbolize her dual personality nature -- or of Lady Oscar wrapped in thorns, with the rose thorns symbolizing her glorious but fragile life. I chose to represent this location type with Ultimecia, a sorceress who wants to compress time so she is the only one who can live in the combined past/present/future, set among ruins. The ruins aren't accurate to the game, but show her crumbling reign marked by the passage of time.
The third location type is locations chosen for pure aesthetics. Obviously all locations are chosen for aesthetics, but these are locations with no deeper meaning and may not represent anything from the series at all. These can range from a simple colored wall backdrop to a sweeping landscape that simply looks good with the colors of the costume. Some examples are the Yasuho Hirose ocean shoot on the slide, where it doesn't represent a particular scene or location in the series but simply looks good with the cut and colors of the costume and the sailor theming, or my Princess White Rose milk bath photoshoot, where again the character never takes a milk bath, but a bathtub full of milk and roses shows off the detail of her floral hat and showcases the opulent nature of a rose-themed princess.
Requirements of your Shoot
Once you have a general concept, think of what is required to fit that concept. This can be as general as specific backgrounds or types of backgrounds to as specific as particular items at the location or particular lighting setups. Some shoots might need specific props, such as furniture to sit or lounge on, and props that won't work in a public location, such as realistic weapons that may cause panic or worse. Also keep in mind any accessibility needs, whether it is an accessible location in general to accommodate a disability or a need that is caused by the costume itself. Check not just the specific area you want to shoot, but how to get there from the parking lot or transit stop. Finally, keep in mind that unsecured outdoor locations, such as a park or beach, are locations where you can't change things about the location and you may encounter other people. Discussion of how to be respectful of such locations is in part 5.
Stay tuned for the rest of the parts~!

alright. we’ve reached deranged o’clock. today, i, tai, will be dissecting the garb of Fyodor (bsd). if someone has done this already, oops! let’s begin.
to start, an image of Fyodor for reference.
Tumblr media
so i’m kicking us off with his hat, because that’s probably the easiest part. the fandom has collectively agreed that it’s an ushanka, and yeah, i tend to agree. it pretty much looks exactly like this (image pictured below: white ushanka from this link).
Tumblr media
so that’s that. to balance it out, i’m doing his cape next, because what the fuck. it looks like a pretty normal cape at first glance. one with fur lining. like this (image pictured below: a black cape with fur lining at the top near the collar from this link.)
Tumblr media
but i urge you to go look back at the reference image, because not only does Fyodor’s cape not attach at the top, not only does it have buttons along the edges, but it has a notch lapel (a type of collar lapel; basically those foldy things by the sides at the top of a trench coat). and once again, it doesn’t attach at the damn top.
so that leaves us two options: either it’s an unbuttoned coat with sleeves that don’t show because it’s so dark and a fur lining, or it’s a really weird cape. and please spare me, because i know nothing about fashion. i’m doing this all for fun. so let’s explore each option.
it could definitely be something like this, except with fur added (image pictured below: soviet officer’s naval uniform from this link)
Tumblr media
except… you know. it doesn’t have sleeves. but his cape doesn’t have anywhere to clip onto at the top, and it also has that collar lapel, and also buttons, so it barely looks like a cape at all! what are you WEARING, Fyodor??
there’s one last possibility, but it’s not a style of cape so much as it is one specific thing i found that looks like the discolored version of what Fyodor is wearing. because i know i’m going to hit the image limit, i’m just going to tell you to visit this link if you wanna see what it looks like. it’s just a lora piana cape.
in any case, his cape does look like a personally tailored version of something that originally came from the russian military, so there’s some food for thought. moving onto his shirt.
the one clothing item that looks most like what he’s wearing is a qipao/cheongsam top. for all intents and purposes, the style and everything looks quite similar—the buttons and how they’re in the middle, where the purple-colored trim would go on Fyodor’s shirt and how it aligns with the sewing, etc. here is an example.
(image pictured below: a white qipao/cheongsam top that honestly looks a lot like what Fyodor is wearing from this link)
Tumblr media
that looks pretty similar, right? right?!?! but damnit Fyodor, you had to make things complicated, didn’t you?! because … because your collar? that is NOT a qipao/cheongsam collar. (image pictured below: official art of Fyodor holding his hat and smiling with no cape on from this link)
Tumblr media
the only thing that would explain how this was still a qipao/cheongsam top was if he was wearing a fengxian collar. and even then… it’s not quite right. (image pictured below: woman wearing a red dudou with a fengxian collar from this link.)
Tumblr media
…but putting so much effort into styling one single shirt… i mean, i couldn’t find any men’s examples of the fengxian collar because styling your qipao is more of a feminine thing to do. so let’s visit russian fashion again.
ah, but there’s the slight kicker. 19th century russian fashion was, to my knowledge, influenced by asian fashion. for example, the khalat, also known as a russian cape, which— huh, do you think he could be wearing a khalat?
….i finished talking about his cape. and as i was writing about the weird collar on his shirt, i remembered this official art, which i grabbed and saved directly from the manga so i don’t have a link source. (image pictured below: newish official art released in the manga—Dazai and Fyodor standing next to each other with yellow paint(?) severing their heads from their bodies and TV screens with various pictures surrounding them.)
Tumblr media
Fyodor’s collar! look, it’s straight! maybe he IS wearing a cheongsam! the cape still has that weird collar lapel (goddamn it) so i can’t really say anything enlightened about that, but… the shirt!!
cool! alright! his pants! so this is really straightforward. idk if it’s pants that come as a pair with the shirt or something, but they just look like normal white linen pants to me. (image pictured below: linen, white pants on a woman from this link)
Tumblr media
finally, his shoes. i only have one image left before i hit the image limit, so i hope you’re willing to scroll back to the top, where you’ll see his shoes look very strange, but surprisingly, they’re easy enough to label.
i think it’s likely he’s wearing Renaissance boots, given how they look almost identical to his sans the fact they’re disconnected in the front, but Renaissance boots DO have gaps, it’s just not pictured in the specific image of these specific boots i chose. (image pictured below: Renaissance boots from this link.)
Tumblr media
yeah, they’re a little short, and maybe they don’t look EXACTLY right, but you can’t deny it’s the same style. if you think the shoe quarters look a little less attached to the vamps, then i’d just tell you to consider the fact he’s wearing spatterdashes and call it a day. (more about spats here.)
and finally, if you’re interested in 19th century/historical russian fashion, given Fyodor’s outfit seems pretty inspired by that, i advise you check out this link, which goes into some detail about things i didn’t.
of course, i hope you enjoyed my disorganized insanity, and may you have a good sun-out time or moon-out time!

Hey btw I'm going to a nearby comic con in April and I'm not a professional cosplayer or anything but I thought it would be fun to have a few of my cosplays that I've made in the past ready to go depending on what I'm feelin and I was wondering where you guys would recommend getting affordable wigs from. My ass is broke but not keep-using-spray-in-hair-color-and-cutting-your-hair broke lol so any help is appreciated!! (also what kind of cosplays do you think are best for comic cons??? I was thinking of going as an omori character but tbh I'm not sure if anyone would get it, being a smaller more local convention ^^;;)

So, I’m doing a very, very low-budget Hypno cosplay for Halloween. I’ve got most of it down, but I’m not sure what to do for the gold parts of the outfit. I only really have a lot of bright yellow thread to work with (and no, I do not have any sewing/embroidery skills). What stuff could I do/add?
