Five Days in Copenhagen
Photo by Shvets Anna on Pexels.com Many years ago, I had the lucky experience of spending my spring break in Copenhagen while my husband was traveling there on a business trip. Spring break is one of the perks of being a teacher! While he worked, I got a chance to roam the city alone with no particular agenda each day. Looking back, it was once of the most relaxing trips I’ve ever taken. That…

Chef's Kiss | Carmy x fem!OC x Luca | Chapter 9
Tumblr media
Previous Chapter | Masterlist
Warnings: Explicit smut; soft, cheesy, ooey gooey romance; no actual conflict, just cuteness. This is hardly a story anymore-- just Luca being adorable. Word Count: 4,191 Summary: Sophie visits Luca in Copenhagen and they discuss their future.
Author's Note: I ended up rushing through to "the end" faster than I expected. But I still have one more chapter planned. I have ideas for a "visiting the family" chapter but I'm also tempted to write up a "moving in" chapter. So at least one of those will still be coming. Thanks everyone for the DMs and likes and reblogs. It means a lot. I hope you all enjoy.
Note part 2: I posted the wrong version last night! I somehow excluded the cutest part of the whole thing. Sorry about that!
Sophie sat, looking out the window of the plane. It had been eight weeks since Luca had visited. Six weeks since Luca had sent her a draft itinerary of all of the things he wanted to do with her in Copenhagen. And five and a half weeks since she had bought a plane ticket to visit him. She was going to visit for 7 days. She was excited to see him again. Excited to see Copenhagen too.
She walked off the plane feeling rumpled and in desperate need of a shower. She had never left the country before and the nine hour flight had been rough. But by the time she had made it to the arrivals gate, she was eagerly looking for Luca. She saw him holding a tiny sign with her name on it, a giant grin on his face when he met her eyes. She pulled her face mask off and rushed towards him. He wrapped his arms around her and lifted her in the air. She reached up and pulled his face to hers, kissing him again. Finally.
“I missed you.” she admitted, quietly. Lips parted for just a breath before pressing back to his.
“Me too.” he sighed, his hand reaching up to cup her cheek, keeping her close to him. Sophie slid her hands down to his shoulders, bracing herself against him and then pulling away with a smile.
“I’m in Copenhagen,” Sophie said, biting her lip. She felt a little giddy, feeling like she was still catching up with herself. The past weeks had flown by and it all still felt a little like a dream.
“You are.” Luca’s warm response was followed by his arm wrapping around her.
She hugged him tightly, making him grin. When she pulled back, Luca grabbed her bags and carried them for her as he led her out of the airport.
“Did you eat?” he asked as he looked over to Sophie. She was looking out the window eagerly at the buildings they passed on their drive to Luca’s apartment.
“Not really. I can never eat on planes,” she said, before grabbing her purse and digging through it. “I did keep the cookies though,” she added with a grin. She pulled the package of biscoff out of her bag and opened it. “You want one? The plane cookies always taste better for some reason.” He grinned at her as she fed him a cookie.
“I’m feeding you real food when we get home.” Sophie blushed at him calling it home. She remembered her sister’s suggestion–
“While you’re visiting, you should figure out if you could see yourself living there,” Mallary encouraged as the two sat in Mallary’s kitchen. At her sister’s shocked silence, Mallary continued, “I can tell you really like him. I haven’t seen you like this in so long.” “Like what?” “Happy,” Mallary said, with a soft smile. “You deserve to be happy. Just think about it.” “It’s only been a month. And I’m happy here too! With you and the girls.” “But you deserve to have your own life. And if Luca is half as amazing as you say he is, I think you should go for it.” “But you live here,” Sophie said, quietly. “We’ll be okay. I promise.” “I can’t just move across the world–” she was hesitant, scared. “You moved across the country for me.” “That’s because it was you!” She was getting emotional, she could feel the tears, the sudden pressure in her sinuses, the pounding of her heart. “I didn’t just come here because I wanted to help you. You’re my sister, Mal. I wanted to live here. We spent years apart already. I want to be with you and the girls and Tim. I don’t want to leave you.” “Sophie–” “I like him. A lot. And I’ve never felt this way about someone before. Not this fast. But I don’t know if I’m ready to leave.” She admitted quietly, feeling scared. Mallary wrapped her in her arms, holding her tightly. “You can visit here. And I can visit you. And you still have time. I just want you to think about it.”
---
Their ride from the airport went by fast and Sophie found herself looking around Luca’s apartment. It was warm. Decorated simply. A cactus on the window ledge, a small bookshelf against the far wall. It was bright and cozy and very Luca. She grinned at him as he gave her a tour.
He offered to cook them dinner and Sophie leapt at the chance to take a shower. She walked out to a delicious meal prepared, Luca setting plates on the table for them. Sophie decided it would be all too easy to imagine herself here. With him.
“You have to keep me awake,” Sophie grumbled as the two were curled up on his couch. Sophie was tired and Luca was convinced she should just sleep. But she was insistent– adorably determined to stay up and go to sleep at a more reasonable hour in hopes of making jet lag easier for herself. He knew he wasn’t helping her. He had wrapped himself around her as they sat and talked on his sofa. He had spent the last few weeks looking forward to her arrival so he couldn’t be blamed for wanting to be as close to her as possible.
“You could just go to sleep early,” he said, softly, as he ran his hand up and down her arm. “I have to work tomorrow anyways so you’ll have the day to yourself.”
“Yeah but I need to be a tourist,” Sophie pushed herself up, turning so that she was facing him. “Besides, there is something I’ve been wanting to do.” She shifted onto her knees and climbed onto his lap, hands grasping onto his shoulders to steady herself. A small teasing smirk on her face.
“What’s that?” he asked, hands reaching up to her hips to hold her to him.
“Something I’ve been thinking a lot about,” she said, leaning forward and brushing the lightest kiss against his lips while her hands softly traced up, under the hem of his shirt. “Can I?”
He hummed. “Anything you want,” he responded. Her cheeks flushed as she looked down at him. She reached a hand up to tangle in his hair. “I’ve been thinking about you,” she said as she pulled his shirt up and over his head. He helped, lifting his arms. Her hands were on him immediately, trailing down from his shoulders, over his chest. “Every night. When I’m in bed,” voice trailing off, eyes burning into his own.
His breath caught in his chest. Having her here with him was better even than he imagined. “Was my girl lonely?” he asked. He felt her reaction to his words, thighs clenching on either side of his lap as she leaned forward to meet his lips, kissing him again. Harder. She pushed herself against him, chest pressed to his.
His hands slid under the cotton of her shorts, gripping her ass and pulling her flush against him. She moaned into his mouth and he gripped her tighter. Her name fell from his lips as he kissed down the column of her throat, nipping the skin gently. She ground down on him, gripping his shoulders tightly.
He shifted his hands so he could support her and then flipped her over, pulling her shorts and underwear off in one smooth motion. He pulled back to take his pants off too. Suddenly feverishly eager, needing to be on her. In her. It was too easy to get lost in how he felt when she was near. The warm, heady, sweet scent of her. The sound of her voice. The taste of her mouth.
His mouth was back on her and she arched into his touch. Fire shot down his spine. She hooked her right leg up around his back as he shifted to lay over her. Her hip brushed against him and he moaned at the feeling of her against him. She grasped his shoulders, nails biting into him as she pulled him closer. The little pinpricks of pain made him groan against her neck as he kissed her skin.
He knew he needed to slow down. Needed to go get a condom. Carry her to his bed. He had planned on spending hours learning how she liked to be touched, seeing how many of those beautiful noises he could pull from her. He’d spent a long time thinking about her visit. He hadn’t planned on making out with her on the couch like teenagers– too caught up in her to take his time.
“Luca please I need–” she said and he was lost in her again. He’d take his time later. He needed her now.
“So polite,” he groaned.
“Fuck please- I want you.”
He slid two fingers inside her with no warning and she gasped and bucked into him. “My girl always gets what she wants.” She keened in response and he groaned, a curse slipping out as he watched her in awe. “So wet for me.” He started pumping, slowly–curling inside her as she clenched around him. She whimpered as he pulled his fingers away, her hips pushing forward, chasing the feeling.
“I’m on birth control,” she gasped, still bucking her hips against him, needy. “If you want– you don’t need a condom.” Her pupils were blown wide, mouth open, looking at him with want in her eyes.
“Fuck, Sophie.” He leaned forward and kissed her, his hand moving down to her pelvis, his long fingers stretching up over her lower stomach as his thumb pressed against her clit with a firm pressure that had her writhing against him. “My pretty girl.”
“Let me know if you want me to stop yeah?” he said, making sure to meet her eyes before he went any further. She nodded eagerly.
He pulled her towards him. Lifted her leg up and over his shoulder, and then slid inside her. They both exhaled together, Sophie’s a soft whine that had Luca groaning. He leaned over her, pushing into her, a string of praises leaving his lips as he started to move. “So fucking good for me.”
“Pretty girl.”
“Mine– all mine.”
Sophie’s responding whines were barely intelligible needy sounds, asking for more, gasping his name. Luca slowed and grabbed her hips, realizing he was getting too close too quickly. She whined and bucked back into him.
“Let me take my time with you. Want you to feel good.”
“It would feel better if you moved,” she groaned, breathless but voice still full of attitude. He laughed in surprise, grinning.
“Heard,” he responded with a groan as he thrust back inside of her, harder. His hand slid down between them and he rubbed his thumb gently down, between her lips, over her clit, causing her to gasp and arch against him. He groaned and sped up, thumb moving faster, urging her towards her release before he found his own.
It didn’t take long for Sophie to clench around him, moaning his name out. And he followed her, leaning forward to bury his face in her neck as he thrust into her one last time.
---
Luca tried to sneak out of bed without waking Sophie but she sighed and rolled over, looking up at him with bleary eyes.
“Off to work?” she asked, voice still rough from sleep. She had propped herself up on an elbow to talk to him.
He nodded. “Go back to sleep,” he responded quietly, his hand reaching out to gently run through her hair. “I’ll be back in the afternoon.”
She grabbed his hand in her own and she pulled it to her mouth and kissed his palm. “Have a nice day,” she said, sleepily as she let his hand go. She laid back down with a sigh, burrowing back into the blankets.
Luca felt his chest warm. He had the urge to call in sick and spend the day with Sophie. Seeing her in his bed made the prospect of spending 8 hours away from her seem like torture. But he knew he was only working one more day and the rest of the week they’d spend together. So he turned to leave, a smile on his face at the thought of her in his apartment. Having her to come home to.
---
“Luca, your girl has you off your game,” Alex, Luca’s sous chef said to him in Danish as Luca put down the plate he was holding. Luca grabbed the tweezers so he could start plating the dish for the third time.
“Sorry, chef,” he sighed.
“No– I’m happy for you. You should leave early. We’ll be fine without you.”
“Especially if you keep messing things up,” Tess chimed in, grinning at him. He shook his head as he finally finished plating the dish correctly.
“We’re excited to meet her tomorrow,” Alex added as he set his own plate next to Luca’s for service. “Now get out of here.”
“Are you sure?” Luca asked, eager to leave but not wanting to ditch his colleagues. Alex laughed at him knowingly.
They kicked him out and Luca took their good natured ribbing in stride as he left.
He ran into Sophie on his way home, she was standing at a stall, speaking in stilted Danish to a man with a giant grin on his face. She was holding a bundle of sunflowers in one hand, a half eaten kanelsnegle in the other.
As Luca got closer, he realized she was asking the man about the dough for his pastry and he had already grabbed a card and was writing down notes for her.
Luca walked up and smiled as Sophie grinned widely at him in return. “Off work early?” she asked and he nodded.
“Did you learn Danish for your visit?” He smiled at her blush.
“Barely. I only learned the basics. And also how to ask for recipes. Of course."
Luca laughed.
“Oh I got you flowers,” she said, holding them out to Luca. His eyes lit up. “I saw them and thought of your tattoo and–” she stopped, cheeks still pink. “Thank you,” he smiled at her and took the flowers along with her bag so that she wouldn’t have to carry it.
“Sunflowers are my favorite too,” she said, hand reaching up to grasp his arm, thumb running over his tattoo. He pulled her to him a little tighter.
The man handed her the recipe card, telling her she should come back and he’d have new pastries the next day. She thanked him, her knowledge of Danish failing her as she tried to convey that she’d definitely be back. Luca helped her and the two set off back to their apartment.
Sophie put the sunflowers in a vase on the sill in his kitchen. “They look nice in your apartment. Sunflowers always make things brighter,” she smiled at Luca as she stepped back.
“You look nice in my apartment,” he said with a warm smile as his hands came to rest on her hips. She smiled up at him and leaned in for a kiss, her tongue teasing his lower lip, chest pressing against his. His plans of taking her for a walk around the neighborhood were pushed to the back of his mind as he picked her up and carried her to bed.
---
Luca brought Sophie to meet his friends at a chic little bar in Vesterbro. Sophie was nervous but Luca had assured her they would all get along.
Sophie anxiously fiddled with the sleeves of her sweater as they walked down a street lined with shops. The architecture helped distract her a little, the rows of buildings clumped together drew her interest, the lights from within spilled onto the slowly darkening street. There were bars and cafes and little stores. Some were closing for the night, others just opening. A steady stream of people walked down the streets. It felt alive. It reminded her a little of her old neighborhood in San Diego and she felt comforted by the surprise dose of familiarity.
They turned a corner and there seemed to be a street full of picnic tables laid out, clustered together near the adjoining businesses. A few groups of people were wandering around but two drew her eye immediately. A man with short dark hair in a blazer and a woman in a beautiful green dress had spotted them and waved them over. Sophie felt underdressed, nerves returning. Luca seemed to notice as he wrapped an arm around her back as they walked over.
“Nice to meet you Sophie, I’m Tess.” She introduced herself– in English, and pulled her into a hug. Sophie grinned and hugged her back.
Luca was embracing the man, clapping him on the back as he seemed to say something in his ear. When they stepped back, Luca introduced him as Alex. Alex pulled her into a quick hug as well.
Tess pulled her towards the bar while the two men talked.
“It’s really nice to meet you. Luca hasn’t stopped talking about you since he came back from his trip,” Tess smiled at her and Sophie tried to hide how happy that made her.
When they got up to the bar, Sophie nervously slid her notebook from her purse. She had taken notes on how to say certain things in Danish– how to order a drink at the bar was one of them.
“Did you bring translations with you?” Tess asked with a soft smile, looking over Sophie’s shoulder. Sophie blushed.
“I’ve been trying to practice but it’s hard to remember everything,” she admitted, flipping a few pages.
After Sophie ordered her drink, Tess looked over her notes and helped her practice a few phrases, complimenting her on her pronunciation. Sophie was pretty sure Tess was just being extra kind because she could hear how stilted her voice sounded. They ended up bonding over their shared love of stationery. Tess complimented her color coded highlighting system and the two talked about their college days.
They chatted about Copenhagen, Sophie learned that Tess had worked with Luca for the past three years and they had become good friends. Sophie could see why they were close, Tess was very kind and super smart.
Tess had flipped another page of her notebook curiously and looked up at Sophie with a grin. Sophie was confused for a second, unsure what she could have found until she remembered. Her cheeks burned and she grabbed the notebook back, feeling awkward. Tess laughed and grinned at Sophie. “Jeg elsker dig. It’s a good one to learn.”
Sophie had written down how to say I love you in Danish. She knew it was soon. Didn’t even think she’d use it– but something made her look it up. She did not intend to have one of Luca’s closest friends find it written down. Possibly with a pink heart drawn next to it.
Sophie groaned and put her face in her hands. Tess laughed and reached out to put a comforting hand on her arm. “Don’t worry, I think he feels the same way about you. I’ve never seen him like this with anyone he has dated before.”
Before Sophie could react to that, Luca and Alex had rejoined them and Sophie hid her notebook away quickly.
Their night was full of laughter. Tess and Alex were a lot of fun. Alex taught Sophie some Danish drinking words and told her all about Luca’s distracted day at work the day prior. Luca shoved him and the two bickered a little, making Tess roll her eyes fondly. Sophie was glad Luca had such good friends around– and happy she was able to meet them.
A few rounds of drinks later and Luca and Sophie were walking back to the train, Luca’s arm wrapped around Sophie’s waist. Sophie was talking about how much she liked Tess, she’d already followed her online and Tess gave Sophie a few recommendations for things to do in their last few days. Sophie was excitedly talking about a bakery Tess mentioned when Luca kissed Sophie softly on the crown of her head making Sophie’s heart race.
It was the perfect evening. Except–Sophie’s feet were starting to hurt. She had worn her cute sandals and the price of that was that her left heel had blistered. She tried to hide it but Luca noticed her favoring her right foot. He grabbed her hand to stop her from walking and squatted down in front of her. “Come on, climb up.” He patted his shoulder.
“What?” she asked, with a laugh. “A piggy back ride?”
He grinned up at her and she melted. His eyes shining from the reflected light off the street lamps, the soft smile on his face. She felt her heart skip a beat. She shook her head, smile still on her lips and walked up to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. He shifted his hands so they gripped her thighs as he stood. She wrapped her legs around his waist and clung onto his shoulders.
“We can’t have you hurting your feet. We have a lot of walking to do the next few days,” he said, voice soft and warm. She settled onto him, snuggling up to his shoulders.
“Thanks for everything,” she responded sweetly, pressing a kiss to his cheek. He squeezed her thighs in reply, holding her tighter to him.
---
Their week together sped by.
Sophie had gotten along with his friends. She had already started chatting with Tess online, exchanging recipes and restaurant stories. Luca was impressed with her attempts at Danish but his friends were happy to speak with her in English. He was glad she seemed to fit in so effortlessly with the people most important to him. And every smile she sent him made him more confident in his feelings for her.
Their week was filled with exploring the city. Spending time with Sophie was fun. And he was not ready for her to leave.
He kept trying to get himself to ask her what was coming next. For them. He had been thinking about their options. About whether or not he could move to Chicago. He had even sent some feelers out to his colleagues, seeing if there might be a restaurant in need of a pastry chef.
He didn’t want to move too fast. Didn’t want to pressure Sophie when she already had so much going on in her own life. But he hadn’t felt like this about someone for so long, he didn’t want to lose her.
It was Sophie’s last night when Luca was preparing to bring up the conversation. He was surprised when Sophie got to it first.
They were sitting on his couch, Sophie’s second attempt to recreate the kanelsnegle–the Danish cinnamon roll– on his coffee table between them. She had turned to look at him, pulling her leg up under her.
She looked at him nervously before blurting, “Before I left, Mallary told me to try to imagine myself living here. To try to use the visit as a sort of test run.” She rushed to amend herself. “I know it’s early. I mean, it’s only been two months. So I don’t want to make things weird.”
Luca just grinned and shook his head, grabbing her hand in his. “No, I’ve been thinking about this too.”
“You have?” Sophie seemed to calm a little at his responding nod. “I really like it here,” she said, voice so warm and genuine that Luca felt his heart start to pound.
“You’re thinking about moving here?”
“I mean, not– not right away or anything,” she stuttered a little and Luca saw she was nervous, realized she had somehow not figured out how much he wanted her there. With him.
“I looked into moving to Chicago,” he admitted quickly. “Before you even visited. So I’ve been thinking about it too.”
Sophie looked at him in complete shock. “You did?”
“Of course I did.” And her responding smile lit up her face.
“I was so nervous to bring it up,” she admitted. “I mean, I do still want to take more time before we decide on anything. But I really like it here. In Copenhagen. And with you.”
Luca felt his heart skip a beat as she looked up at him with a shy smile. He leaned forward to kiss her sweetly. “I’d love you to move here, Sophie. But if you decide you want to stay in Chicago, I would move there instead.”
She smiled and shifted onto her knees so that she could get closer. She climbed onto his lap and kissed him, fingers tangling into his hair. He pulled away, hand cupping her cheek gently, needing her to understand what she meant to him. “I’d follow you anywhere, love.”
Jeg elsker dig. It was too soon to say it. But she could feel it– where this was headed. And suddenly she knew he must feel it too.

I'm still sort of irritated about not managing to get to Stockholm for one show a couple of months ago, largely for disability reasons. Extra shitty, since I wouldn't have hesitated to hop on a train for that otherwise. Wouldn't have minded poking around Stockholm again either, with no particular itinerary.
But, there's not that excuse for another one that I just saw is coming up next month:
Explicitly listing the planned timetable for each act involved struck me as just amusingly Swedish.
At the one main "alternative" venue here in town (as in, about 15 minutes away on the bus that stops right out front), which I have been meaning to check out anyway. They do get some decent acts there.
This one also features Trubbel, plus a few other bands I'm not familiar with. Including a couple of local ones I should probably check out. (Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Hjelle might also be there, if not performing this time. Because local music scenes.)
Plan B's accessibility info also looks decent, even if someone did decide to use a pic of some shitty hospital transport chair in the header. From what I have seen of the place, wouldn't necessarily anticipate anybody trying to stick me in some substandard designated area back in a corner where you can't see anything, as soon as I rolled up. They certainly don't mention anything like that, not that I would be inclined to cooperate too well anyway.
Hell, this is about as wild as I've seen crowds there get (not even kidding); my grouchy middle-aged crip ass would most likely be comfortable enough right up front. Probably just as well that I've just about had my fill of pit action over the years anyway, is all I can say. Maybe you'd have better luck finding that across the bridge in Copenhagen, I really couldn't say at this point.
But yeah, glad to see a decent more accessible opportunity I'm interested in which doesn't require much travel, the way things have been. Says person who used to need to drive at least 4 hours to get to most shows they were interested in--but also was better set up to do that, in just about every respect but spare time and money. Got more of both at my disposal these days, so just about everything else gets more complicated!

Heyyy, sorry to bother, but how do we know he isn’t pretending to go to LA? Do we have hints of his whereabouts? I thought the flight he was catching at that airport was rumors to be to LAX (not saying it was LOL, as you said he has no reason to go to LA)
well I have no reason to believe he’s in LA and he hasn’t indicated he is.. no sightings, no tweets from his acc. at a time that would match an LA schedule like we’ve gotten before
there are no direct flights from Athens to LAX so unless someone had access to his itinerary how would they even know where he was going? and he was seen in the line to board a BA flight to London with chris and joni - who are both unlikely to follow him to LA on his break
to me nothing indicates he went to LA.. and unless he tweets some shit like "back from LA!" like that time he was seen in copenhagen less than 24 hours earlier it seems to me we’re supposed to believe he’s in the UK

Okay so other than the xavier riddle idea that is currently on the back burner (i can talk about it more if you want idk if i've told you i know i rambled to tobi though) and the scioly fedex au that i'm currently almost done with chapter 2 of (!!!), I had yet another idea while in the shower.
So circa halloween 2020, my mom had an idea to take my grandparents and my aunt/uncle/cousin on her side on a virtual cruise because we'd done an actual cruise the two years before but then covid and yeah. We called it squishmallow cruises and well it's expanded to squishmallow tours (road trips) and squishmallow resorts (cottage) but that's not super important.
Anyway we've had 3 cruises and 1 tour since with another tour scheduled for this winter break and a vague idea of one for spring break.
Then my brain pretty much goes "hey what if you used that as a fanfic?" so it'd have a chapter for each day the kotlc crew are on the cruise/tour and like Dex (because i project on to dex) and Sophie? (Because human) or Fitz? (Because he's a nerd like that. I think he would know geography) and everybody else would be unwilling participants.
Not sure which one of our cruises i'd go with but i'd go with one i already have in my google drive instead of making another one just for this. Cause i've got
Caribbean 1 - board in Ft. lauderdale, florida-> st. Penelope (squishmallow cruises' fictional private island in the bahamas) -> us virgin islands -> st. Kitts and nevis -> turks and caicos -> at sea (tea party) -> ft. Lauderdale. Overall quality was real bad because first attempt.
Caribbean 2 - board in Ft. Lauderdale -> usvi -> st. Lucia -> curaçao -> aruba -> at sea -> ft. Lauderdale. I don't have an immediate counterpoint to this one
Alaska - board in seattle -> at sea -> juneau -> skagway -> glacier bay national park (scenic cruising) -> ketchikan -> victoria (british colombia, canada). This is where we started adding youtube videos to our slide presentations for each of our excursion and it's the one i'm probably most familiar with
Ireland (tour) - this one's gonna be too difficult to list but basically fly into shannon, stay in ennis, stay in galway, then up to giants causeway, stay just south of dublin, then down and over to killarney and stay there before going back to shannon to fly home. This one was shortened to 3 days because we didn't want to do a whole week but it certainly deserved it
(Winter break) Italy (tour) - pisa, siena (tea party), rome, panicale (squishmallow cooking channel-hey i could do something with fitz's baking), florence, and back to pisa to fly home. The only problem is that this isn't finished and i haven't lived through it that much and i don't have any slides
(Spring break...maybe) Scandinavia & baltic - copenhagen, aarhus, berlin, at sea, tallinn, helsinki, stockholm, copenhagen and go home. Unless i want until next summer for this i won't be doing this one for similar reasons as above
why i knew so much about alaska/british colombia with keefe's house location on the canon map, should make sense now. The itineraries were probably unnecessary but *shrug*
Idk if it'll happen considering the rate of the scioly au that'll only slow down more once the scioly season starts and i've got cyberpatriot starting monday so idk we'll see. It's not like someone else can take this one off my hands though. All the slides for the excursions live comfortably in my google drive and i'd rather not let my mom know that i write fanfic by sharing it with someone and the email notif pops up on her phone. I already almost broke the system by sending a word tracker google sheet to swan i'm not making that mistake again
Idk if this idea makes any sense and i haven't really given it much thought but hey we're suffering together :)
we sure are suffering together in the too-many-fic-ideas department, my dude. we are tired office workers banging our heads against our desks at how much paperwork (ideas) are piling up. but reading through this file was interesting! even if my geography-dunce brain didn't understand some of the specifics super well. (also, you're right, your extensive knowledge on british columbia and alaska makes more sense now.) also, that part about accidentally notifying your mom that you're a fic writer - mood. biiiiig mood.
my only question with this fun idea is whether or not the kotlc kids are going to all these places irl or doing virtual tours like you did. because that definitely changes up how the story plays out. i would say i'd give you ideas if you need them, but you're far more familiar with geography and virtual tours than i am. but i'm here anyway! to listen if you need me to!

The Inevitable End: Part 6
Lilli laid his suitcase on the bed and frowned. "Babe, the car is coming in an hour. Can you please get packed?"
"Ok." Leon walked over and cupped her face in his hands before kissing her forehead. "I am but you need to remember to breathe."
With a nod, Lilli walked around the bed and flopped down on the other side, letting her breath out in a huff.
"What are you so worried about anyway?" Leon called out from the closet as he brought out his garment bag.
"It's not you," She draped her forearm over her eyes. "I always get like this when I go back home. I want to do and say the right things."
Leon continued to pack, trying to think of something to say to take her mind off of things. "But I'll be there too this time…what's our itinerary anyway?"
"We're going to fly into Copenhagen, I have us staying at the Hotel d’Angleterre." She followed him to the closet and pulled out one of his button down shirts. "Take this one too, it brings out your eyes. We'll go to my parent's house tomorrow and the either stay there for the weekend or go back and forth from the hotel."
When Leon laughed, Lilli frowned slightly. "What?"
"Nothing," He walked over and slung his arm around her shoulders pulling her against his chest. "It's just very unlike you to leave something up in the air."
Lilli allowed herself to close her eyes, breathing in his scent as she wrapped her arms around his waist. "Well, that all depends on how welcome I feel so…it is what it is."
"It is what it is." Leon repeated her words as he gave her a reassuring squeeze. When Lilli's phone pinged, he stepped back. "Ok, kid. I bet that's our ride."
The plane ride itself was only about an hour so Lilli barely had time to settle before they landed. Leon could tell she was getting anxious because she immediately reached for his hand. Once they had their luggage, they made their way through the terminal but Leon was surprised when Lilli walked up to a man holding a sign that read "Countess Ahlefeldt".
The driver greeted them with a nod and placed their luggage in the back of the car while they got settled in the back seat. Leon waited a moment before he spoke. "Why did the sign say that?"
"That's my official title." Lilli pushed her hair away from her face. "I've always gone by Lilli but Lilli comes from Elisabet and my full title is Countess Elisabet Marguerite Louise of Ahlefeldt."
Leon knitted his brow. "So…title as in monarchy?"
"Yes and no." Lilli felt a familiar reluctance creep in. "There are branches of my heritage relating to the Danish royal family but my family branch is not part of the one chosen to succeed. So there's a cadet branch thing which has to do with the male line of descendants…basically my family are considered lower tier nobility but I'm not the first born or male so it's basically just some fancy words added to my name."
"Oh."
Lilli didn't know what kind of response she was anticipating from Leon but it was certainly more than that.
"What's wrong?" She frowned when he had his head turned.
"I guess I just thought you would have told me this before now. The whole thing is that you don't seem to trust me enough to actually be yourself around me." Leon intentionally kept his voice low. "Do you not want me to know you?"
Lilli moved closer and took his hand in hers, giving it a light squeeze. "It's…I don't know how to explain it. Yes, this is my family but at the same time, it's not me. I didn't grow up here and I don't go around introducing myself by saying 'Hi! I'm a countess!' because it really means nothing. Plus, the fewer people who know means the fewer people expecting something from me. I wouldn't have brought you to meet my family if I didn't want you to know me."
When Lilli felt Leon squeeze her hand back, she instantly relaxed.
His voice was even softer than before. "I didn't mean to imply that you were lying to me."
She placed her free hand on his thigh. "That's not at all how I interpreted it. Truth be told, it's not something that I particularly enjoy either. The Danish press write a lot about the various noble families and I've become kind of a running joke with them. I'm the black sheep of my family and if I want to continue to be considered nobility, I'll need to marry someone with his own title. But I'm not really considered to be marriage material here so ha ha."
"That's bullshit, by the way. I'd marry you in a heartbeat." Leon picked her hand up and kissed the back of it.
Lilli didn't look at him and she told herself not to read too much into his comment but this was the second time he had made a joke about getting married and she didn't think he would have said it if there wasn't at least a tiny bit of truth behind it. Lilli would have been lying if she said she hadn't gone over the what ifs in her mind.
By the time they pulled up in front of the hotel, a few members of the staff came out to get their luggage and opened the car door for them. Almost instinctively, Leon held his hand out and helped Lilli out of the car. She then looped her arm through his as they walked towards the reception desk.
"Good afternoon, Countess." A middle aged blond man with dark rimmed glasses came out from behind the desk. "We have the Royal Suite all ready for you, allow me."
He gestured for them to follow prompting Leon to look towards Lilli and smirk.
"Stop," She whispered as she playfully chided him. "Just enjoy it."
Stopping at the door, he opened it and gestured for them to head in first. "May I pour you some champagne?"
"Thank you, Ulrik." Lilli smiled warmly at the concierge. "That would be lovely. This is my boyfriend, Leon, by the way."
Ulrik nodded as he passed a glass to Lilli first and then to Leon. "Very nice to meet you, sir. May I make any dinner reservations for you this evening? Or, perhaps you would prefer the privacy of our in room dining."
Lilli glanced over to Leon. "Do you want to go out or…?"
"Whatever you feel like." Leon only offered a shrug. "I'm not picky."
Looking back to Ulrik, she smiled again. "I think we'll be fine eating in the room tonight. Could we set up an order for breakfast as well?"
"Certainly, Countess." He nodded curtly before making his exit.
When Lilli turned back to Leon, he was smirking. "What?"
"Oh, nothing." He continued to smirk. "Countess."
Lilli rolled her eyes. "Enough already. I know it's ridiculous, ok?"
"Listen," Leon stepped closer and cradled her face with his hands. "I may be giving you a bit of a hard time right now but I am really thankful that you've brought me here because I know that it's important to you."
Lilli nodded as she closed her eyes, resting her head on his shoulder. She wrapped her arms around his waist and after a few moments, let her hand slip under the hem of his hoodie. When Lilli's fingers grazed along his back, tracing little patterns, he had to laugh.
"Well, if that's what you have in mind…"
Grasping his hand in hers, she led him through the rest of the suite back to the bedroom.
As soon as she turned back to look at him, Leon grasped Lilli by the hips to pull her closer. He briefly kissed her lips before trailing his down her neck. Pushing him back, Lilli tugged his hoodie over his head before doing the same with his t-shirt. She kept her eyes on his as she pulled her own shirt over her head, only breaking the contact when she went to tug her pants off.
Hovering over her, Leon placed a trail of kisses on every inch of flesh he could reach. Starting at her clavicle, he worked his way down her sternum before stopping to knead and suckle her breasts. Lilli let out a soft moan while arching her back as he continued down her stomach he kissed along her hip bones. He paused, hovering slightly over her skin causing Lilli to hold her breath in anticipation, only to move past to her thighs.
“Leon, please.”
He looked up at her with a wicked grin as she rested a hand on his head. A moment later, she felt his tongue plunge into her. Lilli cried out as she laid her leg over his shoulder, his mouth alternating between licking, probing and sucking.
Leon felt her shudder beneath him in waves, he knew just what he had accomplished.
"I've never…No one has…" Lilli was practically panting now. "That's new."
He looked back at her for a moment. "No one has ever used their mouth on you before?"
"Guess I've dated some selfish people." She smiled sheepishly and tried to ignore the fact that he was still semi clothed while leaning over her fully naked body.
"Do you have it in you to do more?"
"Yeah."
Lilli lay on her back, while Leon had his face pressed in to her neck, placing the occasional kiss that coincided with the thrust of his hips. She wouldn't have considered herself inexperienced before but she never really thought of having sex to make her feel good as well until they had reconnected. Leon made a point of being attentive to her, taking his time when it was needed and increasing the intensity when it wasn't. She had come twice and knew he had finished as well but he was still holding on to her, still being affectionate.
"I can't decide." Lilli began to stroke the back of his head. "I want to show you around Copenhagen. But I don't want to get up."
Leon let out a little laugh as he repositioned himself, resting his head on Lilli's shoulder. "There's always tomorrow morning."
"You're right, as always. Plus that tub is calling my name." Lilli eased herself out from underneath Leon and stretched as she stood.
Leon opted to lounge in bed for a bit longer and grabbed his phone before pulling the duvet back over himself. He was scrolling through his instagram feed when he got an incoming FaceTime call from Serge. Once he accepted the call, he realized Joshua was on there too.
"So I go in to the gym today, thinking I'll run in to this guy there because, you know, he's always there." Joshua starts in. "Turns out, he's gone out of town."
Serge laughed "Where are you?"
"Oh," Leon stood and slowly panned around the room with his phone. "We're in Copenhagen, Lil's family is having some dinner thing since her brother is getting married."
"Meeting the family." Joshua smiled, almost proudly. "Things must be getting serious."
Leon shrugged. "Yeah, I guess you could say that. I dunno, things just seem…right."
"Right, about that," Serge spoke up now. "I'm going to end things with Marissa. I don't really know what's going on but she turns into a different person with Lina and I'm not about that."
"So you saw that too?" Leon smirked and tried not to laugh outright.
Joshua stepped in. "Yeah, it's like she and Lina bring out the worst in each other."
"We, uh," Serge cleared his throat. "We both felt bad about how the evening ended and wanted to apologize to you and Lilli."
"Lina too." Joshua interjected again. "She's sorry too."
"So, Lilli is taking a bubble bath right now but I'll pass the message on." Leon smiled, genuinely relieved that he wasn't imagining how off their evening was.
Serge spoke again while Joshua nodded. "Yeah, we'd like to take you all out to dinner to make it up, whenever you're ready."
"Yeah." Leon nodded. "Thanks, guys."
Leon decided not to mention anything to Lilli yet. He'd wait and see if Marissa brought it up although he knew that they hadn't really been speaking much. At least not nearly as much as they had been when he first met Lilli.
They spent the rest of the evening lounging, Lilli still in her robe following the bath, and eating their dinner on the terrace that overlooked Kongens Nytorv. Once Lilli did finally change out of the robe, it was only into a navy silk chemise with ivory lace trim. Leon felt a little tingle in the pit of his stomach every time he looked at her and he realized that he wanted to spend as much time with her as possible. He knew that seeing her every couple of days once they got home wouldn't be enough.
They ate breakfast on the terrace before Lilli led a little sightseeing tour of downtown Copenhagen. She started off her usual bright and bubbly self but Leon noticed that she became quieter and a bit more somber as the day went on. Originally, he figured it was the anticipation of return to her family home yet he couldn't help but think that the constant strobe of flashbulbs that followed them might have also been the culprit.
"Listen," Leon draped an arm over Lilli's shoulder. "I have loved seeing everything but why don't we go back to the room. You can get a massage and just try to relax before we go tonight."
Lilli frowned before looking back up at Leon. "You won't be bored?"
"I have to get ready too." He gently bumped into her. "I'll shower while you go to the spa and everything will work out fine."
Seemingly slightly defeated, Lilli nodded. "…ok."
Leon turned to face her, stepping in her path and causing Lilli to almost walk in to him. "What if we come back here next time I have a break? No obligation to see your family, you can just show me around then."
Lilli wrapped her arms around his and leaned into him. "Deal."
After seeing Lilli off to the spa, Leon hopped in the shower. Closing his eyes, he let the water cascade down his face for a few moments before reaching for the little bottles of complimentary shampoo and conditioner. It wasn't until he was rinsing the conditioner from his hair that Leon realized he was feeling slightly nervous himself. He wanted to leave a good impression with her family but mostly her brother. The past few days, Leon began to pick up on how fondly Lilli spoke of her brother and it only made sense that he'd want to impress one of if not the most important person in Lilli's life.
When he got out of the shower, Lilli was sprawled across the bed, eyes closed.
He couldn't help but laugh. "Feel better?"
"Mhmm." Opening her eyes, Lilli rolled over on to her stomach. "Probably the only thing better would have been a Xanax."
"Good." He leaned over to give her a kiss. "Now, I'm going to see if I remember how to tie a bow tie."
"My brother's fiancé is from London so everyone will be speaking English." Lilli called out to him as she was in the shower. "But Danish isn't that far off from German so you'll be fine even if someone slips up."
Leon stood at the vanity, fixing his hair, when the thought entered his mind. "Do they know I'm coming tonight?"
"I've told them I'm bringing my boyfriend." She paused, presumably while washing her face. "I have not told them that I am bringing Leon Goretzka, German international football player."
For whatever reason, that brought a smile to his lips. "Well, I guess they'll find out soon then."
Once Leon had finished getting ready, he went out to the sitting area and turned on the tv. He flipped through the different channels but never stopped on anything long enough to see if he actually could understand Danish.
"Ok," Lilli's voice brought his attention back to the bedroom as she walked towards him. "I just need some help with the back then I'll be ready."
Leon had seen the dress on its hanger but once Lilli had it on, it instantly made an impression. The deep teal pleated silk chiffon material swept along the floor while the same material lay flat around her waist creating a belt that defined her figure. Along the plunging neckline was a row of soft ruffles but Leon's favorite feature by far was the side slit that went almost up to her hip.
After helping Lilli zip up the dress, Leon kissed the nape of her neck while resting his hand just under the slit. "You look absolutely stunning, kid."

[ad_1] Cosy bars, majestic castles and timeless architecture make Lisbon a cool and entrancing city. Our 3-day Lisbon itinerary puts it all together, so you have time to savour it all. By: Paul Healy | Published: 16 Apr 2024 span box-shadow: none !important; filter: brightness(1) !important; ]]> Lisbon is cool. As a city unrestrained by convention, Lisbon is bursting with personality. Beside majestic architecture housing Portugal’s famous blue tiles, flea markets hum to the murmur of curious browsers. Re-purposed industrial areas give it an edge for artistic expression, while timeless monasteries captivate with beguiling designs. Windy lanes climbing up and down narrow streets hide tiny bars serving simple tapas and local wines. Live music spills from open windows; the wistful warbling of fado fills squares with an inexplicable yearning. We’ve visited Lisbon several times, and this itinerary captures everything we love about this alluring city. From the best local areas to the top tourist spots; exquisite galleries to the coolest street art; glorious castles to quirky shops. And of course, pastel de nata. IN THIS GUIDE 3-DAY LISBON ITINERARY DAY 1 São Jorge Castle, São Vicente de Fora, Graca’s Campo de Santa Clara, National Palace, Cathedral DAY 2 Antiga Confeitara de Belém, Jerónimo’s Monastery, Museu Coleção Berardo, Padrão dos Descobrimentos, LX Factory, Santa Catarina DAY 3 Tram 28, Praça Luis de Camōes, Praça de Principe Real, Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcãntara, Elevador da Gloria, Igreja de São Domingos, Convento do Carmo LISBON MAP | ABOUT THIS ITINERARY We’ve put this itinerary together after several visits to Lisbon. It has been designed to minimise the travel time between sights and you can follow most of this itinerary on foot. The map below is organised by each of the 3 days. >> DAY 1 – ALFAMA & OLD LISBON Alfama, perched up on the hill, is a maze of alleyways winding between grand historic buildings. There are sweeping views over the city and the sea, similar to some of the vistas in Porto. We always have a great time simply ambling around the area but here is a recommended route. SÃO JORGE CASTLE Start your 3 days in Lisbon at São Jorge Castle, high on the hill in Alfama. It was once a Moorish castle, but little remains from that period and most of it has been rebuilt over the years. The small museum could do with some improvements, but the views over the city from the rambling walls are excellent. Castelo de São Jorge / Skip-the-Line Tickets SÃO JORGE CASTLE CHURCH OF SÃO VICENTE DE FORA Grab a quality coffee at Copenhagen Coffee Lab and Bakery, before entering the Church of São Vicente de Fora. The church itself is decent and worth a look, but the monastery and cloisters next door are incredibly impressive. Blue tiles, protected by vaulted ceilings, shimmer on the white walls. The atmospheric side chapels have tombs adorned with skulls with a cloaked statue standing guard. Igreja de Sao Vicente de Fora / Check current opening times. SÃO VICENTE DE FORA GRACA’S CAMPO DE SANTA CLARA After the church, head over to Graca’s Campo de Santa Clara, where a massive flea market, Feira da Ladra, covers the streets (Tuesday and Saturday). It sells everything you will never need: old rotary phones, broken mannequins and pre-loved vinyl. The market is great for people watching and you may even pick up a bargain. LUNCH There are plenty of atmospheric places to grab lunch near the market, we loved Tabernita for the traditional Portuguese dishes. FEIRA DA LADRA NATIONAL PANTHEON In the afternoon, enter the striking Panteão Nacional. Originally built as a church it now houses monuments to the great and the good of Portuguese history including a shrine to Vasco da Gama who brought massive wealth to Lisbon. The entrance ticket allows access to the roof with excellent views of the city. From the upper terraces take in a birdseye view of the
marble hall. NATIONAL PANTHEON LISBON CATHEDRAL Next, stroll the tightly packed twisty streets of Alfama. Head past the cute stores and tiny bars to Miradouro das Portas do Sol observation deck for more views. Drop down the hill to the castellated fortress that is Lisbon Cathedral. The Romanesque Lisbon Cathedral dates back to the 12th century. With an imposing facade and two bell towers on either side, it rises like a medieval fortress from the old town. The view from the loft was the highlight for us. LISBON CATHEDRAL PRAÇA DO COMÉRCIO Finally, leave Alfama and stroll down towards Praça do Comércio. The harbour-facing plaza is one of the largest in Portugal and the most beautiful in Europe. It was completely remodelled after the earthquake and today it’s the seat of the Portuguese state departments. The large ornate square an excellent photo opportunity, but we’d suggest avoiding the restaurants around the square. PRAÇA DO COMÉRCIO FADO + EVENING In the evening head to Bairro Alto. Grab a drink on the steps at Meson Andaluz. Then, choose from the daily changing menu of local dishes at the tiny but charming Taberna da Rua das Flores. Later in the evening, Tasca Do Chico offers an intimate great value fado experience. One block north, cool jazz drifts out of Páginas Tanta. At Portas Largas a mixed young crowd can be found enjoying live pop music. If you can’t decide, just go to all three. There’s no entrance charge and the drinks are cheap. DAY 2 – BELÉM & WEST LISBON The seafront area of Belém lies to the west of Lisbon city centre. Come here for engrossing architecture, the epicentre of modern art in the city, and the best pastel de nata in Lisbon. ANTIGA CONFEITARA DE BELÉM Take tram 15 to Belém and begin the second day of your 3-day Lisbon itinerary with coffee and pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart) from Antiga Confeitara de Belém. Yes it has become a large tourist institution, but the pastel de nata is still the best in town. JERÓNIMO’S CHURCH AND MONASTERY After breakfast head to Jerónimo’s Church and Monastery. The remarkable vaulted ceiling of the church is held aloft by intricately carved stone pillars, illuminated by beams of light cascading through colourful stained glass windows. The tomb of Vasco de Gama – the first person to sail around the Cape of Good Hope and therefore enable Portugal to build an empire – takes pride of place. The church is free but we recommend paying to go into the monastery. The cloisters are magnificent and the view of the church from the upper choir is not to be missed. JERÓNIMO’S CHURCH AND MONASTERY MUSEU COLEÇÃO BERARDO End the morning at Museu Coleção Berardo, Lisbon’s best modern art offering. The permanent collection is well-labelled and offers a history lesson in the development of modern art. The temporary exhibitions have an excellent reputation, it was one of our favourite experiences in Lisbon on our last visit. MUSEU COLEÇÃO BERARDO BELÉM TOWER & PADRÃO DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS Cross the street and peer up at the tower of Belém. The climb up to the top is not really worth the wait, so we’d suggest skipping in and strolling along the seafront to find a spot for lunch. After recharging, pass by Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the photogenic monument to Portugal’s navigational prowess. PADRÃO DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS BELÉM TOWER LX FACTORY Head toward the city on tram 15, but before you get there, jump off at LX Factory, an old textile factory that has been converted into a modern and creative space under the railway line. There’s some excellent street art on old factory walls, indie shops, a very cool bookstore and some of the best coffee in town. It’s a great place to hang out and relax. SANTA CATARINA Hopping back on tram 15, spend the evening in the quaint neighbourhood of Santa Catarina which sits on top of a hill. A drink at Noobai Café offers views over the water. To get here it’s a steep walk up the hill or you could take the fun way and ride up on Eleva
dor da Bica. LX FACTORY DAY 3 – BAIRRO ALTO, BAIXA & CHIADO The central area of Lisbon is an eclectic mix. Narrow alleyways crisscross grand shopping streets, dilapidated ruins sit next to striking hotels, and music wafts through open doors and windows. It’s a great part of the city. TRAM 28 On the last day of this 3-day Lisbon itinerary, get an early start (to avoid the queues) and head to Praça Martim Moniz to board Tram 28. This tram twists and turns up the hilliest, narrowest and most scenic lanes in Lisbon. It loops around Alfama, across the centre of town and back up into Chiado. PRAÇA DE PRINCIPE REAL Jump off the tram in Chiadom explore the shops around Praça Luis de Camōes and then head north into the tightly packed narrow lanes of Bairro Alto. Check out the various new concept stores around Praça de Principe Real before lunch at A Cevicheria. Sit at the counter under a giant octopus, and admire the chef preparing mouth-watering fish dishes. MIRADOURO DE SÃO PEDRO DE ALCÃNTARA After lunch check out the view at Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcãntara, which we think gives you the best view in the city. Then make your way down to Rossio and Baixa. You can either take the Elevador da Gloria tram or walk down the path alongside the tram tracks to inspect some of the coolest street art in Lisbon. IGREJA DE SÃO DOMINGOS You now find yourself in Rossio and Baixa – newer Lisbon neighbourhoods, built after the earthquake of 1755. Explore the squares and statues making sure you call in at Igreja de São Domingos. This atmospheric church suffered damage during the earthquake and was burnt down in 1959. The roof was destroyed and has been rebuilt but the walls bear the scars of both events. IGREJA DE SÃO DOMINGOS CONVENTO DO CARMO Skip the long queues and only average views of Elevador de Santa Justa and take the free supermarket lift to Rua Garrett. It’s less glamorous, but just as effective. Stroll the shops before visiting Convento do Carmo. The convent was damaged in the earthquake, and now only towering arches reach into the sky. The chapel at the back contains a strange mix of fascinating artefacts: tombs of the famous, a 2nd-century Egyptian sarcophagus and most interestingly, two mummies of Peruvian children. BAIRRO ALTO For the final evening, grab dinner at Artis Bar in Bairro Alto. It has a great local wine bar atmosphere and tasty dishes at decent prices. It’s also perfectly positioned for people spilling into the streets as music wafts in the air. CONVENTO DO CARMO WHERE TO STAY IN LISBON Lisbon is a relatively compact city, but it’s still a good idea to stay as centrally as possible. We recommend staying in Baixa/Chiado, Bairro Alto or Alfama. All these neighbourhoods ooze the charm that makes Lisbon the city that it is. They’re all centrally located allowing you to get an early start in the morning, and a late night in the evening. BUDGET CASA C’ALMA Casa C’Alma is a beautifully decorated B&B with a small, friendly vibe and a big continental breakfast. It’s located in a lovely neighbourhood about 1 mile from the city centre with plenty of restaurant options nearby. BOOKING.COM MID-MARKET CASA BALTHAZAR The modern, self-catering apartments of Casa Balthazar are bang in the centre of town, yet exude a relaxed chilled-out calm. The views are superb but upgrade to the Jacuzzi Terrace room for spacious luxury with landmark views. HOTELS.COM / BOOKING.COM UPMARKET MEMMO ALFAMA For an emphasis on design with all the latest gadgets, it’s hard to go past Memmo Alfama for your Lisbon stay. Although surrounded by some of the best attractions in Lisbon, it will be hard to leave the rooftop bar and pool with sweeping views over the Tagus River. HOTELS.COM / BOOKING.COM HOW TO GET AROUND LISBON Lisbon has a comprehensive public transport network including trams, funiculars, buses and a metro. A Navegante Card is a quick and easy way to pay for all your travel. The ca
rd costs €0.50 and can be charged with individual tickets, a day pass (€6.40 / £5.95 / $7.90), or with a balance of up to €40 to use as pay-as-you go. Cards can be purchased and charged at metro stations or small stores displaying the Navagante sign. However, the best way to get around the city is to walk. This Lisbon itinerary puts all the sights and experiences in the right order, so you don’t have to spend too much time between places. BEST TIME TO GO TO LISBON The best time to visit Lisbon is during the shoulder seasons of March to May and September to October. Over this period, the temperatures are generally comfortable and there are fewer visitors. You might also snap up a bargain with accommodation places slightly cheaper over this period. As with most European destinations, summer is the peak season when both the temperature and visitor numbers are high. In winter it can be wet and windy, although in Lisbon it’s rarely uncomfortably cold. WHAT TO BOOK BEFORE A TRIP TO LISBON Most attractions in Lisbon don’t require pre-booking and we wouldn’t recommend getting too much in advance so you can leave your itinerary flexible. If you’re visiting during peak times, you may want to book ahead to beat the queue especially São Jorge Castle and Saint Jerónimos Monastery. SAVING LISBON CARD With access to 23 museums and free tram passes, the Lisbon Card is a very cost-effective way to see the main sights in the city. Cards can be purchased for 24, 28 or 72 hours. HOW MUCH TIME IN LISBON? Most of the main sights in Lisbon could be seen in 2 days. It’s a relatively compact city with good local transport so getting between all the main attractions is efficient. We have provided a 3-day Lisbon itinerary because this allows you to see all the impressive historical sights and enjoy some local experiences. It also leaves a little time to wander the streets and soak up the atmosphere. Lisbon is one of our favourite cities in Europe. It’s charming and easy; beautiful and interesting. Yet the nightlife is pumping, the wine free-flowing and the locals friendly. So, you could easily spend up to 4 or 5 days visiting Lisbon, especially if you added a day trip to Sintra, which you could either do on your own or join a tour. TIPS FOR VISITING LISBON Firstly, read our guide to the best things to do in Lisbon which covers all our top highlights in more detail. TRAM 28 TIPS Getting on board Tram 28 at Praça Martim Moniz can be painful as queues are often long. Get their early or walk to the next stop at Rue Palme and hop on there. Tram 28 is a wonderful Lisbon experience but a pick-pocketers delight, so keep an eye on your stuff. STREET SELLING The whispers of “Hashish? Cocaine?” on the streets of Santa Maria Maior is part of a well-known fake drug annoyance embraced by Lisbon. Simply say “no thanks” and move on, in most cases, you’re just rejecting flour or crushed up bay leaves. AUTHENTIC FADO Fado is a moving experience in Lisbon, but the best never gets advertised or promoted to tourists. If you hear it wafting from a packed bar, but there are no signs, this is the place to check out. TOURIST RESTAURANTS Lisbon has grasped the concept of the tourist restaurant. If you want a local dining experience, gravitate towards places without English menus, and avoid places with people hassling you out the front. MIRADOUROS Always take the opportunity to collect the views at a miradouro; they’re a great place to hang out and Lisbon’s array of roof tiles is stunning. Some of the best are: Miradouro das Portas do Sol Miradouro da Graça Miradouro de Santa Catarina Miradouro de Senhora do Monte Miradouro de Monte Agudo MORE PORTUGAL READING ANYWHERE WE ROAM ISREADER-SUPPORTED When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a small affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. Copenhagen, the vibrant capital city of Denmark, is a true gem of the Nordic region. This beautiful city is known for its stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture. From the moment you arrive, you'll be captivated by the charming streets lined with colorful buildings and picturesque canals. Copenhagen is a haven for art and design enthusiasts. The city is filled with museums and galleries showcasing both contemporary and classic works of art. Copenhagen is not just about its beautiful sights. It's a city that embraces the concept of hygge, a Danish word that encompasses coziness, warmth, and contentment. Whether you're sipping a cup of coffee at a cozy café or exploring the vibrant food scene at the street food markets, you'll feel a sense of comfort and relaxation.
December 19 2022, I'm exploring the beautiful city, embracing the winter vibes and showing off my best winter fashion. I mean, you gotta stay warm and stylish, right? In one of my Instagram posts on, I shared some stunning photos of me in a double-breasted coat from THE ROW, off-white track pants from PANGAIA, and high-top leather sneakers from Autry. And let's not forget the gray carpenter beanie from LAUREN MANOOGIAN that completed the whole look. I was feeling myself, and I hope I gave you all some winter fashion inspiration! But here's where things took an unexpected turn. As I was exploring the city, I came across some pigeons. Now, I've seen pigeons before, but these ones were different. They were so friendly and not afraid of humans at all. I couldn't resist posing with them and making a cute face for the camera. I even squatted down to get a closer look at these adorable birds.
But then, something happened that caught me completely off guard. One of the staff members who was with me said, "Wow, they really aren't running away." And in that moment, I couldn't help but wonder if these pigeons had found something delicious to eat. So, with a mix of curiosity and excitement, I asked, "Is it delicious? What are you eating...?" And let me tell you, what happened next was absolutely unexpected and hilarious. I let out a scream! Yes, you heard that right. I screamed, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. These feathered creatures are a common sight in Copenhagen, just like in many other cities around the world. While some people may see them as a nuisance, I find them quite fascinating. Pigeons have a unique ability to navigate and find their way back home, even from long distances. It's incredible how they can adapt to urban environments and coexist with humans. If you visit Copenhagen, you'll often find pigeons in the city squares and parks. They add a touch of liveliness to the surroundings and can be quite entertaining to watch. So, if you're planning a trip to Europe, make sure to include Copenhagen on your itinerary. It's a city that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. And don't forget to appreciate the pigeons that call this city their home. They may seem ordinary, but they are a part of the vibrant tapestry that makes Copenhagen so special.

How do you plan budget-friendly tours to Scandinavia?
Are you dreaming of exploring the stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant cultural heritage of Scandinavia without breaking the bank? Look no further! In this blog, we'll delve into the art of crafting budget-friendly tours to Scandinavia, where breathtaking fjords, picturesque cities, and charming towns await.
From navigating the unique cost of living in countries like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark to uncovering hidden gems and affordable accommodations, we'll equip you with invaluable tips and insights to ensure an unforgettable Scandinavian adventure that won't drain your wallet. Get ready to discover the magic of Scandinavia without the financial stress!
Scandinavia as a Budget Destination
Scandinavia, which includes Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, has a reputation for being an expensive region to visit. It's true that Scandinavia has some of the highest costs of living in Europe, and tourists used to luxurious vacations may end up shelling out quite a bit of money here.
However, budget-conscious travellers can absolutely plan affordable trips to Scandinavia. While you may have to forego luxury hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants, the natural beauty of fjords, glaciers, forests, and mountains doesn't cost anything to enjoy. The lively cosmopolitan cities like Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen offer free museums and galleries, vibrant nightlife, and delicious street food options for reasonable prices.
With some smart planning, the Nordic countries can provide an unforgettable vacation without breaking the bank. The key is focusing your itinerary on free outdoor activities, local culture, and budget-friendly transportation and dining. Armed with the right strategies, you can experience Scandinavia's fairytale landscapes, cutting-edge design, and warm hospitality on a budget.
Plan Your Time of Year
The time of year you choose to visit Scandinavia will have a big impact on the weather you experience and the prices you'll pay.
Summer months bring the warmest weather and long hours of daylight, but prices also peak during this high season. Hotels, tours, and flights can be significantly more expensive in July and August. The weather is ideal for exploring cities like Copenhagen or Stockholm, hiking scenic trails, and enjoying Scandinavia's beautiful coastlines. However, the crowds and costs make summer less than ideal for budget travellers.
Spring and fall offer a better bang for your buck. You'll find lower prices on accommodations and airfare outside of peak months. From May through early June, and September through October, the weather is still relatively mild. Daylight hours are a bit shorter than in summer, but you'll avoid the most intense crowds and expenses. This "shoulder season" is arguably the best time for budget-friendly touring.
For the deepest discounts, consider a winter trip from November to March. Hotel rates and airfares can be slashed dramatically during these cooler, darker months. But winter isn't for everyone; the days are short, and some tourist activities may be limited. If you don't mind bundling up to save money, winter can be an affordable time to experience Scandinavia. Just be strategic by focusing your itinerary on major cities.
Prioritise Your Destinations
Scandinavia is comprised of three main countries: Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. While all offer incredible natural scenery and historic cities, trying to visit more than one or two countries during a budget trip can quickly become unaffordable.
Focus your itinerary on just one or two countries to make the most of your limited time and money. Typically, Sweden and Denmark are more budget-friendly options compared to Norway. Sweden has youth hostels in Stockholm and Gothenburg, while Copenhagen, Denmark, offers more budget accommodations and free attractions.
Start your trip in the more affordable cities before making your way to the scenic but pricey Norwegian Fjords if you have some flexibility. This allows you to get the flavour of each country without overextending your budget. Staying within a defined region also minimises transportation costs between countries.
With some strategic planning, you can see the highlights of Scandinavia without breaking the bank. Define your must-see destinations, focus on 1 or 2 countries, and start in the more budget-friendly cities. This approach maximises your experience while keeping costs down.
Choose Budget Accommodations
When planning tours to Scandinavia on a budget, one of the biggest expenses will be accommodations. Hotels in Scandinavia can be very expensive, especially in popular cities like Stockholm and Copenhagen. The good news is that there are plenty of budget-friendly alternatives to hotels.
Tumblr media
Hostels
Hostels are one of the most affordable accommodation options. Scandinavian hostels are generally very nice, with private rooms in addition to dorms. Many hostels have communal kitchens, so you can save money by cooking some of your own meals.
Apartment Rentals
Renting an apartment through Airbnb or VRBO can be cheaper than a hotel, especially if you're travelling with a group. Scandinavian apartments tend to be modern and well-equipped. Consider staying a bit outside the city centre to get more affordable rates.
Use Public Transportation
Getting around Scandinavia on trains, buses, and ferries is easy and affordable. Public transportation makes it simple to travel between destinations without the cost of renting a car or taking flights.
Within cities, walking and biking are the best ways to explore. Copenhagen and Stockholm are very bike-friendly, with miles of dedicated bike lanes throughout each city. Oslo and Bergen are extremely walkable as their city centres are compact. Wear good walking shoes to traverse the cobblestone streets.
For going between cities and countries, trains and buses are reliable and comfortable. Book tickets in advance for the lowest fares on specific routes. The Eurail Scandinavia Pass offers unlimited train travel if you plan to hop between multiple cities.
Ferries connect Denmark, Sweden, and Norway across the Baltic Sea and make for scenic journeys. The overnight Copenhagen-Oslo ferry lets you save money on a night's accommodation while travelling.
Scandinavia's user-friendly public transportation network makes budget travel achievable. You can comfortably get around without the expense of driving or flying.
Find Free Activities
Scandinavia offers many free and budget-friendly activities for travellers looking to explore the region's natural beauty and culture. Focus your itinerary on free options to save money:
Hiking - Scandinavia is known for its stunning natural landscapes. Go hiking in Norway's fjords, Sweden's forests, or Denmark's coastal trails. The scenery is an attraction in itself. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day immersed in nature.
Parks - World-class parks like Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, and Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo offer free admission. Wander through gardens, enjoy sculptures and architecture, people-watch, or relax on the grass.
Museums - Many top museums offer free entry on certain days of the week or after a certain hour. Check schedules online for the National Museum of Denmark, the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo, and more. Time your visit to take advantage of free hours.
Walking Tours - Look for free walking tours in major cities like Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Bergen. They provide an overview of top attractions and history from a local guide. Tipping is customary if you find it helpful.
Markets - Outdoor markets for local foods, handicrafts, antiques, and more provide an authentic taste of Scandinavian culture. Copenhagen's Norreport market, Bergen's fish market, and Stockholm's Östermalm Food Hall offer hours of free entertainment.
Avoid expensive guided tours, theme parks, performances, or adventure sports. Focus your free time on sightseeing in nature, parks, monuments, and museums to control costs. With stunning scenery and world-class museums, Scandinavia rewards budget travellers with unforgettable experiences.
Pack Light
One of the best ways to save money on tours to Scandinavia is to pack light. With budget airlines charging high fees for checked bags, minimising your luggage is a great way to avoid extra costs. Try to fit everything you'll need into a carry-on bag that you can bring onboard flights and easily manoeuvre around on public transportation.
Pack versatile clothing like t-shirts, jeans, and sweaters that you can layer and mix and match. Limit your shoes to a pair of walking or hiking shoes and some sandals or nice shoes if needed. Only bring essential toiletries and medications to save space. If you'll be travelling for an extended period, plan to do laundry locally at laundrettes, hostels, etc. This allows you to pack less clothing and reuse items. Some accommodations may even offer laundry services.
By packing light, you'll save on luggage fees, be more mobile during your travels, and reduce your load if you'll be covering ground on foot. It takes some planning, but the cost savings are well worth it.
Conclusion
Planning a budget-friendly tour to Scandinavia is not just about saving money; it's about unlocking the secrets to affordable exploration in one of the most captivating regions on Earth. By harnessing the power of early research, strategic accommodation choices, and tapping into local expertise, you can navigate the stunning landscapes and vibrant cultures without breaking the bank.
Remember, Scandinavia's allure lies not only in its picturesque landscapes but also in the warmth of its people and the rich history waiting to be discovered. So, pack wisely, embrace the journey, and let your budget-friendly adventure through Scandinavia unfold, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Prior to the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, my Wife and I had a trip to Japan booked. Tickets bought. An overseas holiday after years. Of course, covid brought that crashing down.
Once the pandemic lifted, the thought of booking our trip returned. However, it was at this point when I got my Leukemia diagnosis. After receiving treatment, and having a successful Stem Cell Transplant, I reached the 2 year post cancer, with my chance of recurrence dropping from 20% to 2%.
We once more resumed talks of overseas travel. However, with receiving lung damage from the stem cell transplant (or the chemo), I was worried still about catching Covid. So, my Wife had a thought about it, and as Japan is densely populated, we were worried that it would be too risky to travel there, so she threw out another suggestion of a country we were interested in: Iceland.
We began looking into it, deciding to do 'Icelandic Full Circle at Leisure' through Nordic visitor, which organised our car rental, accommodation, and airports transfers as well as giving us a lot of itinerary options of things to see and do along our road trip to Iceland so we could plan a lot before we went over. We also decided to have a stopover in Denmark, staying in Copenhagen on our way to Iceland, and upon our return home.
