The Stray

The kids have lured in a stray kitten. Surely Cooro and Nana can decide on a name, right?

Cooro's heart swelled with joy as the young, white cat rubbed against his legs. It was just a bit older than kitten-age and quite lanky, but still adorable. 

"Can we keep it?" Cooro said to Nana, who crouched next to him in the grass. "Please?"

"I don't know. We should ask Harden and Margaret," she smiled. The cat kept pacing between them, rubbing its face and getting plenty of pets and scratches from the two pre-teens. 

The cat had found the house a couple months ago, and the kids had become enamored with it–whether Husky wanted to admit it or not. The cat didn't seem to fear humans at all, hinting that it wasn't feral. So the kids had started leaving out water and food scraps for it until it became a regular around the house. 

"I hope they say yes," Cooro said. 

"Yeah. Husky might be like 'we can't have a pet!' though," Nana said, mimicking a grouchy voice. 

Cooro laughed. "Cats are good to have though! They keep mice away."

"Yep," she nodded. "My family had a couple outdoor cats that hung around our farm. I miss them… Sometimes it felt like they were my only friends… back then, I mean." Memories of a fluffy, brown tabby and a black tuxedo cat came to her mind. 

Cooro pondered her wistful countenance. "What were their names?" he said. 

"Oh! Um… Brownie and Midnight." A small smile spread on her face. 

"We should name this cat!" Cooro smiled. 

"Yeah!" Nana said. Cooro's enthusiasm, as always, was contagious. 

"What about Snowflake?"

"Hmm… maybe. Is it a boy or a girl?"

Cooro lifted up the cat, unafraid of any retribution he might receive. Luckily, the cat was relaxed. "A girl, I think." 

"Ooh! It has to be really cute then! Like…Princess!" 

"Maybe. I still kinda like Snowflake though…"

Nana gave him an amused look. "It's not very…original."

"But you named a cat Midnight. I bet it was black, right?"

"Well…yeah, but I was also like, seven!" she stammered, caught off guard by his accuracy. 

He chuckled. "We can have everyone vote on it." He gently, but confidently, scooped up the cat. He wondered how soft her fur would be after a good wash. 

"Noo!" Nana pouted. "Husky will hate my name, I know it. That's an automatic vote for you!"

"Probably!" Cooro grinned, which made her heart do somersaults. 

"Hold on, I need to think of something else!" Her mind desperately scrambled around. "Uh…Daisy? Or maybe Lacey?" she thought out loud.

"Those are white things, too, Nana."

"No, they can be any color!" 

He hummed. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

Nana huffed. Cooro cradling the small cat in front of her was distracting, just from how cute he looked. "I… I pick Lacey," she decided. 

"Okay! Let's go!" He turned to walk into the house. 

"Ah, we'll need to ask if we can keep her first," Nana realized.

"Oh yeah," Cooro chuckled. He had nearly forgotten the cat wasn't theirs yet.

Nana pursed her lips and looked at him. "...Get your puppy-dog eyes ready," she said quietly as they neared the door.

"Already on it~"

Chapter 53: My Anima

So...Blanca.

Husky and Nana see her, Nana thinking that she's a real angel. Then she wakes up and GASP, she's the White Shadow!

Husky and Nana escape the room, recognizing her from last night. They find themselves in a strange room full of plants. Then Nana sees this:

She screams and runs off. Then the White Shadow flies around her. She freaks out, thinking it's trying to get inside her. Then Cooro and Senri burst in...then Fly bursts in after them, shoving them out of the way. He cries out "Blanca!" and the White Shadow returns to Blanca's body. Nana asks if Blanca is the girl's name and Fly responds in the affirmative. He says she's an angel Anima. Husky demands to know what the hell is going on and Fly offers to explain in a different room, leading them to another track that leads out to Astar. Turns out they're in a tunnel that was made in the capital a long time ago. Only a small part of it is still usable. He takes them outdoors to the Astarian National Research Facility. Then he takes them to the library where they see Marca (surprise surprise, Husky isn't happy to see her). Cooro just recognizes her as the lady who gave them apples. Fly asks her to make them some tea as he leads the kids away.

He finds out they met Lyra and confirms that she underwent Anima implantation at her own request. He also confirms that he can also remove an Anima, turning the Anima user into a human. He says that becoming an Anima is not something children wish for; they unconsciously draw in Animas in order to survive. A child cries, an Anima arrives. The Anima marking is a scar that he can remove with surgery. Animas tend to leave on their own when a child grows up, no longer being needed. But Fly asks why wait? Why prolong your suffering? The facility can help children lead normal lives.

Husky calls him out, asking what exactly is he supposed to do for them? Fly responds by saying that since Nana is good with a needle, he can have her take an apprenticeship under a seamstress. He then cryptically says that if there's someone that you can't see because of your Anima, you can see them again in Husky's earshot. However, he won't recommend the procedure to Senri, saying that being a Kimunkle the Anima are sacred to his culture. The offer stands for everyone else though. Cooro himself says that Nana should do what will make her happy.

We later seen Nana bathing to prep for the surgery. Cooro himself is thinking by the window, wondering if he really will be happier without an Anima. I mean, he had one since birth so he wouldn't know. So Nana is being led to the surgery room to be prepped for anesthesia. She hesitates and admits that since it's the last time, she wants to say goodbye to her Anima. She sprouts her bat wings and bat ears and thanks them for helping her and introducing her to her friends. When Marca asks if she's ready, she flies off, saying she's changed her mind. She's not happy despite her Anima; she's happy because of her Anima. And hey, if it's going to disappear when she's an adult, what's the rush? She then rushes over to see Husky, afraid that he had the surgery and Husky pops out to yell at her for screaming. Nana hugs him and says that she didn't have the surgery. Husky says he thought about it but didn't go through with it; he's happy the way he is. When Nana asks where Cooro and Senri are, Husky says they never wanted to remove their Anima in the first place so they're probably in the waiting room. The chapter ends with them going off to search for them.

Fandom’s 5 Manga That I Think Deserve an Anime Adaptation

Winner of the last poll was with, so here’s what we’re covering today. 

These are five manga series that I feel deserve an anime adaptation. Series that for one reason or another haven’t gotten one, but would absolutely be great on the screen with the right team attached. All of them I’ve read and find absolutely enjoyable, and I think they deserve a spot in the limelight. 

Note: Some of the series listed do cover heavy topics, so please be sure to check for warnings before checking them out. 

And with that, let’s get started!

#1) My Hero Academia: Vigilantes

Koichi is a young man in university who always wanted to be a hero, but things didn’t work out quite like he’d hope. After running into a brass-knuckle weilding old man called Knuckleduster, and an aspiring street pop-idol known as Pop Step, Koichi finds himself roped into the world of Vigilantes; Heroes who operate outside of the proper legal channels and, by current societies standards, are technically criminals themselves.

While I know this will probably get some of its scenes animated given its relevance to the main manga’s current plot, this prequel story has more than enough to stand on its own as an anime spin-off. Old and new faves interact in amazing ways, and I absolutely suggest you give it a shot. 

#2) Kitchen Princess

Najika Kazami is a young orphan girl with a strong sense of taste who, after much hard work, manages to get into the prestigious Seika Academy with one goal in mind; to find her “Flan Prince”, a boy who saved her from drowning and cheered her up after her parents died, giving her the dessert that sparked the nickname for her unnamed hero. Before they parted, she promised him she’d someday make him the best dessert in the world when they finally met again. 

This one is a lot darker than the cover may initially let on and one I definitely suggest you look into the content warnings for before opening up the first volume. But the story is mostly solid and in the end ends on a sweet note, even after many bitter flavors.  

And if you don’t want to read it, I recommend getting the books anyway, because they include recipes for the dishes featured in every volume. 

#3) +Anima

In this world, there are those known as +Anima. People who have the ability to change their bodies and use the abilities of the animal they get their traits from. In this story we follow four young protagonists; the ever optimistic Cooro the Crow, the stern and serious Husky the Fish, the kind and quiet Senri the Bear, and the sweet young Nana the Bat, as they travel through the countries in an attempt to find a place where they belong. 

This was one of the first manga I ever read and by god is it an amazing 10 volume ride. The story is dark yet hopeful, the art is beautiful, and the characters are by far one of the best casts I’ve seen in a manga.  

#4) Yotsuba &!

Yotsuba Koiwai is a young girl who just moved into town with her father. As she explores the world around her, she gets into adventures with her father Yousuke, his best friend Jumbo, and their neighbors the Ayase Family, along with many other characters who come and go through the story. 

A simple slice of life story from the creator of Azumanga Daioh, filled with comedy, fun memes in the making, and all around a genuinely good, light hearted story. And while I know the writer said Yotsuba isn’t really suited to an anime format, I truly believe it would be perfect for an anime adaptation with the right team behind it. 

#5) My Son is Probably Gay

Hiroki is gay. He doesn’t want his parents to know. But his mom has already pretty much figured it out. She tries her best to support him regardless, and does her best to encourage his romantic pursuits and personal hobbies, without bringing it up and waiting until he’s ready to tell her himself. 

This manga is just...so goddamn sweet. You can tell this mom really cares about her son and really wants him to be happy. And Hiroki is a sweetie and you really want to see him find happiness. This manga would make a perfect mini series of shorts.

47. “I thought I was the only one.” from Halloween Prompts

Theoretically, Toby was good at parties. He was outgoing, he was funny, he knew how to dance.

He was also rather unpopular. As in, other than Jim, his closest friend was a guy he talked to on the Go Go Sushi forums. Toby doubted that the guy’s real name was AAARRRGGHH!!!, but it made sense since Toby went by Warhammer and that wasn’t his real name.

In all honesty, he was pretty sure that Aja didn’t invite her to her Halloween party/birthday bash because she liked him, but rather because her grandpa and his Nana were chess buddies. To make matters worse, no one recognized his costume; they thought he was some weird vampire instead of Nana Alba from what was apparently a very niche manga. Not even Krel, who had dressed as one of the mechas from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

“I thought I was the only one.” Toby turned around to see a girl with a yellow tunic, hair clips with feathers attached, and a pair of black feathered wings.

“You’re Cooro, I mean, Claire, right?”

“Yeah! I didn’t know you read +Anima. You’re in my History class, right?”

Chrom x specifically male protag (fire emblem awakening) female protag version is actually canon but i always HATED how her scenes with him are all cliche anime 'whoops fell into boobs' and 'nobody likes a woman who doesnt cook'. Male protag route is infinately more romantic just cos it actually shows their personalities! I mean if they both had the same dialogue just like most other scenes, i woulda been fine with the fem protag romance geez..

Virion x Panne (also fire emblem awakening) i have no idea why this obscure pairing grasped my heart and why more people dony like it! I like it cos panne snipes back at virion and takes none of his shit like sully, but without the whole 'girl who says she doesnt love him in the first scene eventually loves him if he keeps wearing her down' thing. And i like all the interesting cultural exchange that comes from a really pompous nobleman clashing with a rough and tumble stern fighter from an ancient lost lineage of lapinthropes. I dunno, his development into appreciating women just seems more genuine when you have this sort of auxilary sign that he's changed. He's willing to drop his pompousness and go on a big mountainclimbing adventure just to get her a traditional courtship flower amoungst her people! And its really adorable to see that like.. Its his first time ever getting nervous around a woman, cos this time the feelings are genuine instead of just lust and nothing else. And it was hilarious that he tried to get drunk to get over his fears, and then he fumbled the confession because of it! They have so many great sarcasm battle scenes, its hilarious AND adorable! Oh man and the scene where they actually got really emotional and panne talked about hoping her dead family is watching from the moon, and virion being vunerable about his past and just... AAA its such an unexpectedly good couple for such wildly different charries!!

Avery x Mason (hustle cat) mason is the most badass lady ever holy shit everyone should date her and she should lift them all over her head and maybe seven cars. She's a biker gang badass and a super cake chef and can turn into a cat and just EVERYTHING IS PERFECT ABOUT THIS CHARACTER THANKS FOR COMING TO MY TED TALK

Husky and Cooro (+anima) i know theyre just kids but i totally get a precocious crush vibe from cooro, and like it only ever seems that husky gets embarassed over 'but what will everyone think' rather than because he doesn't like him. And husky has a lot of issues with internalized 'i need to be super manly' type anxieties and all.

Quale and Quan (ff9) okay i guess not really a ship but a past ship? I kinda saw them as a toriel and asgore type divorced couple from how stuttery and awkward quale is about how quan left and betrayed qu society. Headcanon that really it was more like 'my boyfriend wants to go adventuring and i wanna stay and live in this safe town, and he decided that adventure was more inportant than me'. I prefer this headcanon cos really neither of them would be at fault here, yknow? Complexity! Also grandpas shipping! Both great things!

Cloud and barret (ff7) cmon yo they have a load of chemistry and have so much in common backstory wise and in terms of putting up a grumpy front and being scared of letting themselves ever love again. And barret is the handsomest character in the game! And he's super tormented and in need of love just ss much as vincent geez, even if he isnt a funky fashion vampire. But he's a BIG HUGS BEAR MAN!! And he has a sweet little daughter! And there's several opportunities for cloud to act nice to marlene and seriously imagine him as a dad!! And barret even does get a 'date' with cloud if you play the game super precisely to unlock that easter egg but its clearly meant to be a joke and all. I hope maybe they could make it more legit in the remake now we're in an era of more lgbt representation and all. Also i feel bad but i never felt any chemistry between cloud and any of the female characters? It seemed like tifa was intended to be his canon love interest and all but i never liked it, and i never felt anything more than bffs with him and aerith. Plus aerith and zack is classic sweet star torn lovers! And then literally no clue why people ship him with yuffie and elena from the turks (???) Try barret sometime. We need more barret fanart in general, even of nobody else likes this ship! Appreciate him!!

Bebop and Rocksteady (ninja turtles) look, 6 year old me wanted them to get married before i even learned that That Thing Is Supposed To Be A Man And A Woman Under God or whatever. Chapter 36: Market

Daisy reports to Crystal that Husky and Senri were kidnapped by slave hunters. She also says Cooro and Nana flew after the tracks. Crystal then says to an old guy named Bino that it's time to take the caravan to the market.

To our captured boys, an Anima slave hunter (Race Traitor Mailman has been dethroned.) inspect their "cargo", including a drugged out Senri. They write him down as making either a good boxer or a soldier. Next up is Husky, who is seen as a girl at first. When asked his name, he stays quiet. The slaver brushes it off, saying he's getting a new name soon anyway, and checks out his earrings, asking if he's an aristocrat's kid or something. Husky stays quiet until the guy starts going creepy grandpa on him, patting him on the head and telling him he has use as long as he's an Anima. This causes Husky to snap at him, telling him off for trying to be nice when he makes a living capturing and selling people. The old man responds that he'll leave Husky's piercings in; he'll sell for more that way.

Cooro and Nana are panting in exhaustion on a rock, still looking for the wagon that stole Husky and Senri. Cooro asks if Nana is okay but Nana explodes, saying Senri and Husky were minding their business and they were stolen. Why do Anima have to be treated like this? Cooro gives the best answer: it's Sairando's law. They then sleep to recover their energy...

The next day at the market, slave auction time! Crystal finds a bear Anima's auction number, figures it must be Senri's, and waits for him, figuring Cooro and Nana are biding their time to save their friends. Then some guy comes over to greet her, his name being Edo and his presence being unwanted. Edo starts his whole "Oh, you're the nice slave master but I'm tough on mine to show the audience that you're one of the good ones" spiel before Crystal leaves, sparing us further distractions. Next up, Senri! And Crystal recognizes him...like, not from the description she was given but really recognizes him.

Cooro and Nana wake up and realize that they overslept. They spot a town in the distance and fly over, thinking it's Market Town. On the way, they spot Anima sneaking in before they are spotted by a strong hunk Anima with wings. Noticing the seal on their choker, he recognizes them as Crystal's "workers". Smiling, he tells them if they want to be free, then just watch him...

Meanwhile, Crystal bids a high price for Senri and we discover that she is the woman from Senri's flashback who gave him the eyepatch. Present day Senri sees her...and turns around and runs away, going into the slavers' room to get his book, pick it up with his teeth and dash out with the flower Crystal gave him back then, causing Crystal to know that he does remember her. Cooro and Nana arrive in time to see Senri saved...and see the other Anima they came with throw sand at everybody so that the hunk from earlier can fly up and shout to everybody that Crystal is a hypocrite who says she wants to help the Anima but all she wants to do is control all of them.

Book Review: no spoilers Me and Emily are currently borrowing each other’s favourite books. She wanted me to read this one because I had just recently read Itazura na Kiss, another manga, and she thought I might like it. I did like it. I liked it more than I thought I would, because I don’t know how I feel about other manga just yet. But if this is anything to go buy, I think I might be a fan of manga.

This series is about a group of four friends that travel together, and they are all +Anima. +Anima are humans with animal like powers, and the friends take after different animals. Cooro is a crow +Anima, Husky is a Fish +Anima, Senri is a Bear +Anima, and Nana is a Bat +Anima. They are all travelling together, with no real goal other than to get money and feed themselves.

I quite like this book, because each chapter feels like a tv episode. They have their own story, and you don’t need to really know anything about the series to get into it. Emily didn’t have the first volume because she read it from her old school library, so my first taste of this manga series was volume 2, and I didn’t feel like I needed to have read the first volume to have enjoyed it. I will probably end up buying the first volume so I can understand the background a bit more, but I still enjoyed it. And the artwork was beautiful.

Overall I give this manga 8/10 or a 4/5. I did really enjoy it. I would have preferred a long recap, but then if you have read the first volume, you wouldn’t have needed a recap as much as I did. I hope the characters develop a bit more of the series, and I will most likely get the series. I would recommend this to all ages. Children, to teenagers, to adults can enjoy this manga series.
