What, in your opinion, are the dumbest-looking/worst design Pokémon?

So... this absolute monstrosity would be at the top of my list. Enamourus, the fourth genie monster and an exclusive to Legends Arceus.

What.. what is this? What the ever-loving CARP was GameFreak thinking? How did this get a free pass? It's too thin, it's too complex, it's too... everything. It's so bad.

Rhyperior took a really solid, if a little dull, monster (Rhydon) and made it squat and disgraceful. The poor thing doesn't have a neck anymore! How does it turn its head?!

@roxycake and I have mentioned this before but Conkledurr is one of the single most gag-inducing monsters to exist; this weird... bizarre... vein-y clown thing hunched over two concrete pillars. Who the fuck thought this was okay?

Barbaracle is just... why are its eyes on its hands? Does that mean it can't pick stuff up? Who approved this?

Probopass has always been very unsettling to me, but it got worse when the 3D games started to get produced because its in-game blinking animation is so weird. That giant red cap thing on its head? Yeah that shit just clips down like a stapler. It makes my skin crawl.

Dracovish gets a bit more of a free pass because it's supposed to look awful (it's based on the unfortunate fact that early British paleontologists would put skeletons together incorrectly and display them in museums) but like... did they really have to make it look that bad? What's worse is that Dracovish is genuinely a good Pokemon, it just looks like shit. Maybe I'll warm up to it one day; it's kind of cute if you look at it from a certain angle. Fugly, if you will.

I'm reviving the pokemon au

Kuai Liang is the current ice type gym leader with a: Regice, Frosslass, Glaceon, Sneasel, Lapras, and Aurorus

The Regice was originally his mother's and the Froslass was one he caught while stranded on the top of a mountain during a blizzard, whom he privately believes to be his dead sister, Lian, and has named accordingly, as she died on that same mountain and it is believed that Froslass are born from the souls of women who die in the snow. Lian the Froslass saved his life by fighting off the pokemon who wanted to kill him and guiding him back down the mountain.

Frost is training under Kuai Liang and acts as a kind of mini-boss to challengers with a team of: Alolan Vulpix, Sneasel, Frosmoth, Cubchoo, Glalie and Cloyster

Her Sneasel, named Crimson, was a gift to her by Kuai Liang when he found her outside his gym one night, having run away from home. It was her first pokemon and still obviously her favorite, though she denies it to anyone who asks.

Bi-Han used to be the ice type gym leader, but after an accident that left his pokemon team dead, he abandoned the gym and vanished for years. When he resurfaced, he was the dark type gym leader with a team of: Weavile, Mandibuzz, Absol, Zorua, Umbreon, and Murkrow

The Absol, named Snow, was the first pokemon he caught after the incident and he maintains to this day that Snow caught him, not the other way around. He was originally never going to train pokemon again, but Snow pushed him

Hanzo is the dragon type gym leader with a: Dragapult, Drampa, Vibrava, Kommo-o, Noivern, and Dragonair

He is a descendant of the Draconid people and is one of the few who still maintains their traditions to this day, teaching anyone who wants to learn if they agree to join his gym as trainers.

Takeda acts as Hanzo's mini-boss, with a: Goomy, Gible, Deino, Bagon, Axew, and Applin

Kenshi left him in Hanzo's care when he was asked to join the Elite four by Raiden, fearing that the league was no place to raise a child and since Suchin had been a Draconid too and a member of Hanzo's gym, it was a way for Takeda to stay connect to her, even after her passing

The Fire Type gym leader is Liu Kang: Blaziken, Cinderace, Infernape, Armarouge, Hisuian Arcanine, and Talonflame

He was originally asked by Raiden to be the champion, but declined as he felt that such a position should be earned and not granted, instead working his way up to be leader of the gym.

Raiden is the electric type gym leader and runs the league with a team of: Morpeko, Elekid, Alolan Raichu, Magneton, Jolteon and Ampharos

He refounded the league after it had fallen out of use as he wanted trainers to be prepared for the dangers to come

Mileena is the Fairy type gym leader with a team of: Mawile, Mimikyu, Grimmsnarl, Granbull, Hattterene, and Sylveon

Sick of living in her sister, Kitana's shadow, Mileena founded her own gym and became one of the strongest trainers out there, with many trainers complaining that her gym is the hardest to beat. The sylveon evolved from an Eevee Kitana had caught her when they were kids (before The Incident where they fell out) and as Sylveons evolve into that form due to how much they love their trainer, the Sylveon is her favorite as it is proof that she can be loved

Jax and Sonya are the Joint fighting type trainers with Jax's team being: Hawlucha, Gallade, Sawk, Lucario, Hitmonlee, Machamp. and Sonya's being: Throh, Hitmonchan, Sneasler, Toxicroak, Primape, and Poliwrath

Sonya originally wanted to be the water type gym leader but as there were already 8 gyms, she instead joined Jax at his, working her way up to be his co-leader and training all their underlings to be even stronger

Jacqui is their miniboss with a team of: Breloom, Conkledurr, Scrafty, Heracross, Crabominable, and Falinks

She doesn't want to be a fighting type gym leader or trainer though, she would much prefer to be a normal trainer doing her gym challenge but Jax is overprotective and won't let her go until she's "Strong enough" Despite the fact that he has gone three months without a battle bc she kept defeating every trainer to challenge them

Kitana is the flying type gym leader with: Skarmory, Sensu Form Oricorio, Swanna, Aerodactyl, Swellow, and a blue Minior

She inherited the gym from her mother and is doing her best to uphold the late leader's legacy although some of the things she is discovering about Sindel are unsettling

Jade acts as one of Kitana's trainers, fighting with a Tropius and a Tropius only, though she is still hard to beat

Of the Elite Four we have:

Nightwolf, the rock type, who has three Lycanorocs, one of each form, a Terrakion, Rhydon, and Regirock

Kung Lao, who is determined to be the next champion and uses steel type: Bisharp, Aegislash, Aggron, Metagross, Bronzong and Tinkaton

Kenshi, psychic type: Reuniclus, Oranguru, Hypno, Alakazam, Delphox, and Espeon

And Jade, the grass type: Tropius, Rillaboom, Venusaur, Torterra, Meganium, and Serperior

The current champion:

Cassie Cage, with a team of: Hitmontop, Beedrill, Golurk, Cyclizar, Toxtricity, and Gyarados

Rain is trying to create his own gym, water type, but as it is unofficial nobody counts his badge as meaningful though many trainers do fight his gym just to prove they can.

His team is: Milotic, Relicanth, Kingdra, Lumineon, Vaporeon, and Slowking

Johnny runs a pokemon rescue/pokemon nursery and was once a famous pokemon trainer and actor though he has since settled down. He doesn't have a full team anymore, just a Cinccino from his movie days and a Sableye that keeps breaking into his house to eat his jewelry

Shao Khan runs Team Hammer (I couldn't think of a better name) and seeks to turn the league into his own personal army by becoming champion and disposing of any gym leaders who won't fall in line. Shang Tsung, Skarlet, and Kano + Kano's black dragon goons all work for him and cause havoc wherever they can

Like we brianstormed half of this ages ago in the discord and then I made a joke and we brought it back up and Aki is making their own spin on it now(I love this for you btw it's fun and I love seeing the overlap on our thoughts)

ANYWAY: Who is what pokemon!

So first off. All of 1-A are first stage evolution because they're baby.

Izuku - Oh boy. Short version: Mew 3 but thinks he's a Shaymin. Long story will swing back to it eventually

Katsuki - Riolu! I had narrowed it down to Riolu, Cyndaquil, or Mankey, all for appearance and vibes and some in the power category. But then it was pointed out that Riolu evolves through /friendship. and I just. The narrative there? Beautiful.

Ochako - Cleffa! They're from space!

Kiri - Sandshrew! I knew he'd be a ground or rock type and Sandshrew's a vibe and they're all pointy, but also because my AU has Kiri and Tetsutetsu as siblings I wanted something to fit both of them as they'd be the same thing, and main Sandshrew is ground but the Alolan one is part Steel for Tetsutetsu

Shoto - Vulpix, still a Chimera so he's both Kantonian and Alolan.

Denki - Pichu. Like how can I not he already gets the Pikachu jokes but Pichu is extra baby and can't yet control the electricity!

Jiro - Noibat! Just fuckin look at it!

Tsu - Froakie. Frog!!! Will eventually be a Greninja and look at the similarities!

Fumikage - Murkrow. Once again. Obvious choice.

Hagakure - Kecleon! Invisible baby!

Ojiro - Aipom! Monkey! Tail is a hand!

Sato - Milcrey but like. Big one.

Momo - Eevee. Simple but many possibilities!

Himiko - Zorua. Known for disguising!

Mei - Tinkaton. It just. It's pink and it builds weapons!!!!

Monoma - Smeargle. he copies things!

All Might - Palafin. IT'S LITERALLY THE ONLY PERFECT CHOICE

Recovery Girl - Blissey. Nurse pokemon!!

Present Mic - Chatot. I have to make the gay bird be the other gay bird it's a pmd story I have to!!

Midnight - Slazzle

Cementoss - Conkledurr

Power Loader - Exadrill

Nezu - Ironically, the one random Human who got yeeted into the pokemon world.

AfO - A VERY pissed off Mewtwo.

Going into the Todoroki drama for a second:

Enji is an Incineroar(Seriously LOOK AT IT).

Rei is an Alolan Ninetails, chosen because 1.) compatible with Incineroar and 2.) can make both fire and ice kids.

We're /kinda/ breaking some of how in-game genetics and abilities work for the kids to match their canon powers.

Toya is a Kantonian Ninetails but he got Snow Cloak instead of Flash Fire

Fuyumi is all Alolan

Natsuo is the opposite of Toya, being Alolan but having Flash Fire instead of Snow Cloak.

Shoto, as mentioned above, is a Chimera. So he got both the Kanto and Alola forms in one.

Swinging back to Izuku's bullshit: Basically Dad for One but with me yoinking from my other Monster AU.

AfO being a very pissed off Mewtwo. Has become the thing he hated and tried to make another Mew, resulting in Izuku. Baby Izuku ends up teleporting his ass out of there and is found by Inko(a Shaymin). Imprints on her as a mother figure and unconsciously uses the transform ability to copy her form. Inko does not know what happened there but that is a baby and it's hers now damn it. Izuku knows Inko isn't his mom but isn't aware that he's not a Shaymin.

I always find it interesting that Darktail goes to the Dark Forest, implying that he may believe in it, or at least StarClan. It makes me think that maybe he did, but never cared about where he went, as long as he took Onestar with him, and yet he goes to the dark forest…and his Dad wasn’t there. I think about how that could have sat with him. Like maybe he was clouded by understandable vengeance towards his father, and yet he’s not there. What was it all for?

That's a really good take, I like that one

Onestar's Concussion went with a really boring take on it, confirming that the modern Erin approach to the Dark Forest is that it's explicitly a punishment. A cat first goes to StarClan, and then is sent to EEBY DEEBY after waking up in the starry fields.

Obviously I don't mind this TOO much. After all, I have an entire Mapleshade AU based around the idea of building up the concept of trials and StarClan having flawed judgement (and this is a trait shared with the Bonefall Rewrite-- I'll be very excited to talk about StarClan Lizardstripe someday), but man... they really went with the most boring way to approach the concept.

I really did like the old way that the Dark Forest seemed like a consequence of self-perception. If you think you're bad, if you're filled with spite for StarClan, you just... sink. You're incapable of finding your way to Silverpelt.

So Ashfur being in StarClan initially wasn't necessarily a mistake, but if he ends up in StarClan... the others just have to Accept It, and cling to a bunch of excuses they know are bullshit in the hope this ends well.

Darktail being in the Dark Forest? It means he really did think he deserved it. It would make you wonder if he ever thought he was worthy of StarClan, if he obviously believes in it.

Did he grow up hoping maybe one day, StarClan could grant his wishes? Did he turn cold towards them when they never answered his prayers? ...was it hate from the beginning?

I like it a lot more than Born Evil Darktail that Onestar's Conkledurr decided to commit to.

Well it's a mix of havin' tools--both handheld like my pickaxe, along with larger machines like drills--and havin' Pokémon help us out. 'N the case a' my company it's mostly the Drilbur, Sandile an' Tympole lines, with Gurdurr an' Conkledurr movin' the rubble out as we work. Though with the wave of released Pokémon thanks ta Team Plasma, there's also been a fair share of Sandshrew and Sandslash that workers have taken in and started trainin'.

Aside from that though, there's actually a few different methods ta mine. Ta keep from gettin' too technical, Driftveil Mining mostly does what's called room an' pillar minin'. Basically tunnels are dug out an' then rooms are made in a sorta grid pattern.

I know the newest pokemon games are considered easier than the older ones, but I'm still kinda stunned by how the elite 4 in unova kicked my ass. sure most of them were about 4-6 levels above my teams but STILL. yikes! is gen 5 usually considered hard or is my lack of experience showing?

I'll be honest I don't know for sure since it's been a hot second since I've gone back to gen 5 but I have distinct memories of Marshall absolutely sweeping the floor with my ass to the point where I had to restart the Elite Four numerous times solely due to him spamming bulldoze and his stupid POS Conkledurr ruining my day. Really the only one I think I recall being easyish was Caitlin and I think that's because I'm pretty sure I had a dark type on my team. Granted I was probably about 11 or 12 at the time but still I recall the game's climax being such a rough ride that I never ended up going back to fight Alder proper because I just never wanted to go near those assholes again

Ross- fighting they're the type people usually use to build things in the game and anime, thinking conkledurr and maybe lucario (or a fighting dark type, for balance purposes)

Smiffy psychic- one of the reuniclus line and maybe Delphox? (He do love to blow things up so fire type lol)

Okay, so I was thinking a very thing similar but different type trio:

With Trott being Ice because haha funny walrus man (plus Walrein is an ice type)

Ross being Ground because of the building element and the fact that most ground pokemon involve digging in someway

And of course, Smiffy as fire, for very obvious reasons

But I am still working out the mental kinks with them, and like how a triple battle gym would work along with how much self-sabotage the three of them would do. But yeah, the more suggestions and balancing ideas the better <3

hi! was wondering if you were open to suggestions for the chocobros + pokemon? for ignis, i'd personally suggest arcanine or stoutland (fire + loyal). for gladio ofc aegislash is perfect, id recommend conkeldurr (reminds me of the pillars he used in ep gladio lol) and bastiodon (another shield). and for prompto maybe klingklang (techy boy) or dodrio (like his beloved chocobos)! just my thoughts :O

Arcanine and Stoutland are far better choices than Delphox for Ignis imo. i kinda wanted a Starter Pokémon for each of them to have.

Hisuian Arcanine in particular is also suited to his role as the designated guardian, the one who looks after the Chocobros' well-being. which brings me to think about Dragapult as his designated Ghost-/Dark-type. yes i know it's silly. but look. Ignis is canonically silly: bro backflips across the battlefield for no good reason.

on the other hand, Talonflame is *gestures* Just There as a Fire Birb and it'd be cool to give Ignis more birb 'mons. or maybe Gallade? since it's kinda a starter (see: Wally) and it dual-wields its dagger-like appendages. but you see, Luna would have a Gardevoir and having a Gallade in addition would be a bit much.

i was also thinking about giving Gladio an Incineroar because a) it'd be his wrestling partner and b) it's a reference to his role as "the heel" in Chapter 10.*

Conkledurr has never been a Pokémon i liked because it's so... gonky. but Bastiodon is amazing. perfect. AND it's a Fossil Pokémon! i think Rock-/Ground-types are a natural fit for Gladio as he's not only the Big Guy but also the rock (heh) that the others rely on.

as for Prompto, Klinklang makes perfect sense. man's got the sense for machinery, Klinklang is a bunch o' fancy machinery stuck together, it's a match made in heaven. Dodrio, while visually chocobo-like, are kinda creepy compared to chocobos.

i was thinking perhaps a) a Fairy-type and b) a 'mon that evolves by friendship for one of its stages would fit his tendency to be the mood-maker (i.e. his perky outer side) and desire for true friends (his sad inner side). now, you might be thinking Sylveon, but consider: Togekiss. as an added bonus, it's also a bird-like mascotable Pokémon!
