Commissar Cain against the Valhallans' deadly weapons🙂
My friends and I also do Warhammer 40,000 cosplay.
Ciaphas Cain and his loyal assistant Jurgen are definitely among my favorite characters. Cain's style of storytelling is sometimes so reminiscent of my own internal monologues (oh, that impostor syndrome!) that I simply repeat them as a refrain in my head.
And the ironic comments of Inquisitor Vale are a special pleasure and add layers and depth to the story.
I would love to cosplay the dodgy commissar myself, but purely based on physical characteristics, I don’t fit the image of a two-meter tall athletic guy with sideburns. Unlike my boyfriend, as you can see in the video ( ・・)つ⬆️ (yes, a little bit of bragging about my boyfriend, don't judge me (*/_\)
P.S. This is the first greatcoat option; an improved version is currently in the process.

I freaking love bumbling around with my servo-skull. Everyone's always so nice when I ask to take their picture, then when they realise I'm doing it with a servo-skull they always get excited 😆

I don’t know if they ever threw any patches out to keep it playable in Current Edition but if so, it strikes me that you could use that old Renegades and Heretics list to play the Necron vassals of those among the Newcrons that have such things
Wouldn’t be a good idea but it would be a cool modelling project
Humans serving someone like the Nihilakh, who apparently order the populations of conquered worlds to build huge monuments for their glory and shit. And who Trazyn at least reckons will keep humanity around to serve them. Who knows, with all that crazy Dark Imperium shit going on, if a Necron Dynasty started repairing Pylons or building new ones or whatever and curbing all the Chaos bullshit the locals might serve them willingly. Trazyn shows there’s precedent with his pet scribe, who did better under him than under other Imperials.
Wouldn’t be a great society to live in even in the best case, we know the Necrontyr let their lower classes live in mud brick houses even after they’d developed FTL because they didn’t value life, but it’s 40k. It could be worse.
Anyway the R&H list was mostly guard units with some gimmicks (random leadership, mix and match weapons) and a few novel unit types, and you could use it for a wide range of stuff: There were chaos options, but you didn’t need to take them. You could just load up on Apostate Preachers and angry mobs and have them be a religious or even secular uprising, go heavy on wargear options to represent “Xenos heretech” and model some Ogryns as Ork mercenaries to play a human society which is friendly with aliens, take 5 rogue psykers and a refractor field on every character possible to model a psychic uprising, etc. Was a pretty rudimentary list but it was what we had.
So for Necron vassals you’d obviously avoid the psykers. But you could take Chaos Marines with Infiltrate as an Elite choice* and they had almost the same statline as Necron Warriors; use Warrior models as standins and have them infiltrate to represent Necrons phasing in to support their vassals (or more likely, using them as cannon fodder to avoid fighting themselves). You could even justify the lack of Resurrection Protocols by saying they didn’t care enough to self-repair for the sake of their slaves, and just phased out once injured.
Take a few Enforcers (special unit type, execute people to stop units breaking. Bit like some commissar rules I think, never played muc IG on tabletop) and load em up with carapace armour, refractor fields and plasma pistols to be “Necron Overseers”. Give them a glowy green whip, be a nice conversion job. If the plassy overheats it’s because the Dynasty sent the most fucked up and damaged Necrons to corral the inferiors and they’re falling apart, obviously.
Give the guys Egyptian themes to show them aping their overlords. Grab a few old mud brick buildings and spooky black obelisks as terrain pieces. Convert a squad of the elite human infantry, can’t remember their names, to look like they’re trying to cosplay Immortals.
Somehow they’re still nicer to work for than half the Imperium.
Nihilakh Ascendant!
*you could run these as loyalists to make an army of Chapter Serfs, come to think of it

Heavy cosplay coming soon!
Btw, I will be using a longer version of the Commissar's Coat for the cosplay
Mainly because long coats are awesome and that the coat in the image was manufactured in Russia

Feel like posting some screen shots of a few of my FFXIV "cosplay glams".
At top you have 40k Imperial Commissar for tanking, next is mech pilot/mechanic for machinist, and then last is my attempt to make a Skitarii vanguard tank glam.

I secretly knew because I have a 40k commissar cosplay and the second, the second I put that stupid fancy coat on I'm like "god I wish there was a living saint here for me to venerate" and I see the nearby anime convention girlies dressed in fancy white dresses with fancy custom halos and angel motifs and I orbit them like some sort of insane lunatic until I ask for a picture and every time I'm like. "Hey. Hey can I, like, kneel in front of you? Would that be awkward?"
I also had a super weird dream about it (the cosplay) once where I was basically psychologically terrorizing my fictional boyfriend's enemies on his behalf while he did a wargame.
But sometimes it literally does take someone to be like "I think you're into the dynamic from the opposite end that people would think" for you to be like "aw shit you're right I DO want to be the guy demanding that people kneel in front of the lady and show her some respect, huh."

This is the anon who only knows about 40K through your posts while my partner has just gotten into it-
He’s gotten a lot more into it, so much so that he’s making an oc to cosplay. Very ww1 vibes, I couldn’t tell you which faction, but I can tell you he looks amazing and I’m seeing the appeal more and more. (All of the art looks great the appeal was there-it was just not as strong since I didn’t know the characters well)
He’s also listening to a podcast about warhammer now and retelling stuff to me. Tonight he was telling me about how every space marine has a chaos counterpart? I’ll admit I didn’t follow everything but it sounds fun.
Anyways, I wanted to share this little update and say all of the best to you and may your words flow easily while writing!
(Thanks for listening even if it’s kinda random.)
I'm very happy that despite not being into it you're still supporting his hobby, not everyone does that. I'm sure if even if he hasn't said it, he's very thankful you are. I know that's kinda sappy to say but, I've never had that so I want to support your silly endeavors.
WW1? that's probably either The Death Korps of Krieg (gas mask?) or an Imperium guardsmen/commissar. All are fan favorites.
Thank you for the good wishes friend! We'll see if the writing gods are on my side XD

I have short hair rn, and I should do a quick Mother Raised by Wolves cosplay, it would please me, but also I want to do Mad Max Furiosa again as well, because short hair, which means my next two con day cosplays will be spoken for which mean no commissar, which like.... I gotta wash the coat and add some extra flair anyway (medals!!) but like I like the commissar coat I wanna wear the commissar coat everyone notices me in the commissar coat and I get to stomp around the con yelling at people :(

I went to Death Unto Darkness episode 5 at the weekend and had the time of my life as Commissar Feliks Flowers. Here he is in a couple of official portraits by an on-site Imperial pict-scribe.
