Rudolph Rambling
I've been thinking about which of these two regularly aired versions of Rudolph is superior (Freeform/CBS Edits), and I know I haven't posted much, so here's this for now.
I was originally going to make a pro's and con's list for both edits, but you know what? I'm not in the mood to be organized! Here's my beef with both versions.
The infamous CBS edit... (also on AMC as well?) It's not very good... That 'We're a couple of misfits' edit is horrible. I can't defend it. Practically all of the songs were edited to be shorter (And several scenes removed), and while I really don't like that, I understand why that's a thing. And at least they're shortened in ways that make sense and flow decent enough. We're a couple of misfits though? Nope! Nope! Ruins the entire thing. Every time! Why would you put it over unrelated footage like that?! Makes no sense! Nothing matches up!
The only real credit I can give is that it's short and sweet. And I like that in a tv special. Also means less commercials.
Now you're probably expecting me to praise the Freeform version, and there's plenty of things to praise. For one, they play We're a couple of misfits in its entirety with it's original footage. That's always good. Actually, this version keeps a bunch of stuff! Not only is nothing shortened, they throw in the Peppermint Mine scene at the end! (Which, while it was definitely on some home releases, apparently wasn't on tv since 1964! The original broadcast! That's amazing!)
But I'm not ready to say this version is superior, as it has it's own problems. ...Technically not a problem, but I am definitely not used to the Universal logo at the beginning. The first few times I saw it, I questioned whether or not a mistake was made. But no, a quick scroll through Wikipedia proves that is correct. ClassicMedia (Now DreamWorks Classics) got purchased by DreamWorks, which is owned by Universal.
The main issue with the Freeform version is that there are WAY TOO MANY COMMERCIAL BREAKS! And where the breaks are located make very little sense! (This is an issue I have with most things on freeform. Especially with older tv specials. You can tell that the specials were made with commercials in mind, but nobody ever seems to use that to their advantage. And it bugs me way more than it should. I would rather have a few longer breaks than more short breaks in this instance.)
Also, did I imagine this? Or did they completely cut the ending music number (Y'know, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer)?? Because that makes absolutely no sense. If it's a run-time issue, it's freeform's fault for all those commercials! Don't be greedy!!! (I beg to Disney, knowing I'll be ignored)
...I hope I haven't rambled about this last year...
