That viral post that's going around about how people who write "book quality" mlm fic are too "normal" to publish and have real jobs so only "weird" people publish their "shitty" fanfic is so completely out of touch with reality and I am giving a massive side eye to everyone reblogging it.
Not only is it completely, easily verifiably untrue (you cannot enter any professional writing space without tripping over a dozen grizzled scifi writers who got their start by filing off the serial numbers and publishing their Star Trek fanfic even going back decades ago??? it's a whole thing?? plus how can you look at the mlm category on Amazon right now and say with a straight face that people aren't publishing shitty Spirk and Stucky fanfic??? Oh, honey...) it's also the perfect example of this kind of sneering elitism that true artists would never sully themselves by seeking profit, they do it only for the purity of the thing that always somehow leads back to, "no one should be paid to make art, actually."
The only reason you're seeing more published fanfic right now has nothing to do with the idealistic purity of your hypothetical government employee written smut of the past vs the debased scribbles of those awful straights of today and everything to do with the fact that a) self-publishing has created a voracious readership that wants a ton of content so it's become a viable, flexible income stream for many, especially disabled people b) anyone can publish now with self-publishing tools so there are less gatekeepers and c) lockdown got a lot of people into fandom and therefore writing who never tried it before.
And if you really think there's no "shitty" published mlm and no "book-quality" m/f writing out there that started as fanfic, then you are clearly not a reader so why are you even talking about this?
#love how they manipulated people into spreading that post by making it seem like a cishet vs gay thing#when the real message is OP thinks trying to sell your writing is cringe and 'weird' and 'normal people' with jobs would never#which would of course never have flown on the fandom website#so they played into the queer shipping is purer than cishet shipping puriteen thing#and it worked!#because my god people are gullible#this is the direct pipeline that leads to AI thievery#''normal' people write for the joy of it anyway so why do you need pay? you are just greedy and 'weird'!'#'oh no this isn't about who we get to call cringe and who gets to profit from art it's about um...#(quick what's a hated m/f ship?).. oh uh 'shitty' REYLO#and not our super pure uh... (spirk is still popular right? lets throw in that avengers one too to make it seem timely) stucky!'#I'm sorry if I have no sense of humor about this but the year is 2024 and people are still way too ready to sneer#about writers trying to earn a fucking living in the shittiest timeline#and i need you to look deep into yourself and ask you why it's so important to you to tell yourself that only people writing what you like#are 'normal' with real jobs and to vilify everyone else as 'weird' and 'shitty'#for trying to make an income during a financial fucking crisis#i would say sorry for ranting about this but I'm not sorry because wtf#write whatever you want#publish whatever you want#there is no moral fucking purity in what the content is#and one thing certainly doesn't make you more 'weird' or 'normal' than the other#like there is soooo much shitty mlm that started as fanfic???#that post is 100% OP made up some guys to get mad about and called them relyos for the clicks#writing#publishing#writblr#writeblr#i wasn't going to tag this anything but you know what fuck it I'm mad#i had like 5 more tags but tumblr cut me off which is fair 😅#fan fiction

i think the second you start putting together a list of the writers and what their gender/sexuality identities are for the sake of proving the ofmd writers room isn’t as queer as you think it should be you’re already in too deep. the fact that an izzy fan did all that AND went even FURTHER and just openly assumed everyone was cishet if they couldn’t immediately find evidence otherwise is beyond parody. i can’t even find it in me to be upset or anything i’m just amazed at how little self-awareness some ppl have. how do you type all that up and post it without ever stopping to think “wait is this a shitty thing i’m doing” like babe what is WRONG with you

Still thinking about that time I made the mistake watching the blood ridge clip from Rickternal Friendshine on youtube (I think when adult swim first uploaded it so all the comments were fresh), and all the straight guys of the fandom had the audacity to try and claim that Rick wasn't propositioning a relationship with BP or that he totally didn't want a romantic (and likely deeply sexual) relationship with the man.
Like, my brother in christ HE SPELLED IT OUT FOR MEMORY RICK AND THE VIEWER THAT EPISODE, PLUS RICK ISN'T EVEN REMOTELY STRAIGHT, HOW IS THIS NOT CLICKING FOR YOU??
I'm glad it's mostly sensible people now that it's sorted by top comments, but I was literally so pressed by the sheer audacity of those guys that I wrote a like 10 paragraph analysis comment on the video explaining how in no uncertain terms rick was in love with BP... and STILL had someone say "ok but not to marry him"

In regards to canon’s “adrien is a fairytale princess” thing, it is related to misogyny, yes, but it’s not directed at Adrien or a result of him being “femme coded”, it’s more so that the crew thinks reversing stereotypical gender roles is enough to be considered a feminist twist but they lack a vital understanding of the meaning behind these stereotypical roles and why they’re actually bad beyond being cliché and annoying. They haven’t broken down the tropes themselves but rather simply accepted the conclusion that they’re bad when applied to female characters without analyzing why they’re often applied to female characters in the first place and how it stems from misogyny.
I’ve mentioned the Enlightened White Male Atheist thing in the past (it’s not actually limited to any of these demographics but I’ve personally observed it’s more prevalent there) where a creator is so convinced that they’ve reached enlightenment about issues pertaining beyond their own lived experiences that they don’t need to keep taking any steps to improve themselves. They already know all there is to know and anyone that says otherwise is Wrong.
The crew is truly believes they understand writing and feminism well enough to execute it perfectly while actually only knowing the basic definition of each with no true understanding of the subject. It’s basically the problem with studying methods that rely solely on memorization rather than critical thinking, the students technically know what something is but they don’t understand it.

“Like so many of the stories that we’ve done, many many different elements came together to create a script. Mehndi was one of them and it’s something that I was a little aware of. I’ve done a little bit of reading on it. Not a lot. I believe Rob was the one who came to me, however, and said ‘Wow, this is fascinating’, ‘this is, you know, really great, what can you do with this?’
I had already wanted to grab a hold of the reincarnation idea and there are a few elements that fuelled this. One I’m going to have to reference is a song by Paul Williams, which was in The Muppet Movie. And there was a line in this one song that I felt, and I’d always felt this way, described the two characters perfectly. The line was ‘there’s not a word yet for old friends who have just met’. And I thought you know something? They are old friends. They just met. But they’re old friends. So in my mind throughout history and throughout destiny, these two characters’ souls have existed and have met, parted ways, met, intertwined, parted ways. And that fit in perfectly with the reincarnation theory but what was important for these two characters is that those two souls have throughout history intertwined, they’ve come together, they’ve parted ways, they’ve come together again, they’ve intertwined, they’ve parted ways. This has happened continuously and every time it happens in their lifetimes, they recognize each other. Not like ‘oh, you’re Xena, oh, I’m Gabrielle’. No no, they say ‘I know you. I know you and I have to be with you. I don’t know why but I do’.
Now bringing the Mehndi into it. Mehndi was perfect symbolism to this because when you think about it, Mehndi, um, if you’ve done it and if you’ve read up on what Mehndi means, it’s not just drawing. Mehndi has an entire meaning behind it. There’s a whole philosophy and spirituality based on Mehndi. The simplest part of it was the fact that Mehndi has a lot of lines that run parallel to each other and they will intersect, they will form beautiful designs, then they will part again and run parallel. Well, that’s lives. Xena and Gabrielle - those are the lives. Those are the threads of their lives. They run parallel to each other, they intersect, form beautiful designs. Then they might part but they still run parallel to each other. And what really counts is what’s between those lines. There’s the title; ‘Between The Lines’.”
Half the reason why they ended up taking the soulmates motif so seriously and literally was due to Steven L. Sears and his reincarnation idea and understanding of Xena and Gabrielle’s soulmate connection. So, in my view, half the reason why the love story is so damn profound is because of him.
Now he would be the first to scoff at that and say that I’m giving him far too much credit. But that is exactly why he is amazing and deserves that much credit.
‘Between The Lines’ took the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle to a whole other level because we do learn that they actually are true to life soulmates and all of what that informed and involved for them as individual characters as well as together as a couple. And so everything leading up to this episode now felt so much more intense and deep and poignant.
Substantial. And I wouldn’t have been able to write my character study thesis without it. Even though I don’t directly mention it - it’s sort of just embedded within the insightful interpretation that I’ve made about it because this episode doesn’t just tell a one-time storyline about the characters. It essentially informs EVERYTHING about them. Who they are and why - and especially how they are such a great team that navigate their soulmate connection to be just that.
It’s like these two people who seemed to be total strangers until this episode was seen were actually destined to meet and travel together and fall in love because their very soul that they shared fated it so.
And by the gods - I have yet to see or know a relationship that is that damn EPIC on-screen.
Xena and Gabrielle are the WLW representation you expect to be provided - considered canon or not - because this level of storytelling between female characters that can be interpreted as romantic just doesn’t happen anymore. There’s no time or room for it to in the TV art/entertainment industry apparently.

i think people who are big fans of the dd tv show that show no interest in the comics r boring. like the show is so. Normative yk? like the fact that they didn't understand matt and his motivators so they defaulted to religion. the fact that they had to continuously sexualise the disabled main character (the writers and actors were literally and explicitly making jokes about how many shirtless scenes there were and how they literally had to turn down a few 😧) for him to be an appealing one. the fact that they dumbed down the way his blindness worked and basically made it Seeing Part Two. the fact that they played into the fetishism of chinese culture for The Hand and then they?? abandoned it because they didn't want the 'main' villain to be a person of colour lmao. the fact that the ableism is the same kind of ableism in the comics like they hardly tried to be better. the fact that they gave karen such a different and objectively better (imo) backstory but 🤓☝️ instead of making her grow on her own continuously teased a romantic relationship in which with every instance, of said persuasion she acted out of character because they literally couldn't make it work other but would not leave it alone because of 'comic accuracy'. the fact that there are so many explicit shot for shot, 1:1, comic to show translations but not one of them prompted you to open a book? ewwwww

love when shows 'acquiesce' to their audience by providing canon queer side characters that will live for exactly 3 episodes and get character exploration akin to that of a piece of cardboard. dude, bisexuality 101 and gender identity 401 personified are stood behind you. your show has provided the characters. they've been here all along. you wrote them a decade ago. they're right there. i can see them. they're delicately woven into a complex narrative. baby talk to me

one time saw a poll of like "which character has the most nonbinary swag" and it listed JACK and ive never been more incensed. she's butch you fucking cowards. yes there's certainly room to toy with how her backstory might lead to her feeling divorced from human social things or feel inhuman entirely but she's presented to us by bioware, known Chronically Cishet White Men, as a scary butch woman i hate you people butches get so little to begin with already
also there are literally so many other characters (asari) who are canonically nb and you go with the fucking butch human woman. i hate you.
