I think one of the most devastating attacks on people's faiths is when they witness people doing evil things in the name of God, and it's something I think we Christians need to be more willing to talk about.

While it is true that some people lie about having religious trauma and whatnot for internet brownie points, not everyone who claims to suffer from it is lying. If we believe that humanity is sinful and in need of penance, why would we believe ourselves to be any different? If anything, these sorts of claims need to be taken more seriously not only because they are all too plausible considering what our faith says about human nature (including ours) but also because as Christians we are held to higher standards than non-believers.

Unlike those who do not believe, we Christians are called to act as witnesses to the Gospel and to God's plan for mankind. If we give bad testimony through wicked actions, who can blame the non-believers for not being convinced? You don't need a degree in theology or years of studying the bible to spot a liar or a hypocrite.

Obviously, we should not and cannot atone for other people's sins. And yes. Sometimes the accusations and demands non-believers make of us are lies, or are unreasonable. But we also need to be vigilant not only in our own behavior, but also in what our brothers and sisters do in the name of the faith. Not all who say Lord Lord are good servants.

In Islam there's this idea called shirk (شِركْ, literally "association"); the sin of associating or equivocating something or someone to God, because God does not share His divine attributes with anyone or anything, so to associate something with Him is a grave insult to Him. It's not exactly the same, but I do feel as though the concepts of the Nation or the Monarch as an object of reverence are an insult to God's glory. The idea of a monarch as God's divine representative, or of a country as something equivalent to God, or of a monarch receiving legitimacy from God, fails to fully encapsulate His glory. Why would God need representatives, when we are all His representatives through the Holy Spirit? How can a single nation compare to God, when He has seen every country rise, and will see them all die? Why would God enthrone a man as king when the Son of God has already been enthroned as King forever?

I cannot understate how important it is to properly denounce evil that festers in Christian communities.

In a world that hates us and frequently uses bad faith arguements to insult us, it is easy to assume that every single person with a bad thing to say about our faith is just a bigot.

And yeah. A lot of them are just bigots. But some of them have had genuinely negative experiences. Some grew up in abusive Christian households. Some were raised on faulty theology or outright heresy. Some lost family and friends because they were gay or trans. Some were taught that racism and misogyny and other forms of hatred were things God wants. Some escaped cults. Some were sexually abused by clergy.

And yes. It isn't fair that we are judged for evil we did not commit. And yes. It is not fair that evil people are used as examples of our faith. A faith they have misused for their own purposes. But all the same they have done evil in the name of God and people are hurting because of it.

And if we are to be exemplars of Christ we need to try harder to be loving and kind in response to that pain instead of lashing back at it.
