Chime - a wolfstargazer microfic - word count: 303
When they were younger, time had meant freedom; a far off notion, shimmering with possibilities and the potential of things to come.
Then time became a fixed date on the calendar - 31st October 1981 - a way to measure all that had come before, and everything that fell apart.
Time was then twelve years, the days and months running together, marked only by the absence of anything worth marking; a hollowness that stole his youth before he realised what had happened.
And then time was, finally, never enough; when they had found each other and every moment had slipped through their fingers, precious and fleeting, wishing that time was forever...
...until Sirius had fallen through the veil and time stood still.
Remus stood before the clock that they had fixed in Grimmauld Place, that he had let run down and hadn't wound since the moment it had happened. He closed his eyes, struggled to recall its chime, and imagined a familiar voice in his ear whisper, "You should wind it, you know?"
Remus leant into the fantasy, conjuring Sirius' arms around his waist, the scratch of stubble against his ear.
Remus gave a shuddering sigh. "I can't," he said.
"But it took so long to fix it."
"I know."
A pause and the words he then imagined hit him hard, snatching his breath as he heard Sirius say, "It won't hurt like this forever." And then, "You will forget -"
"Never."
"Maybe," he imagined Sirius saying, that infuriating smile playing about his lips, before he said, finally, "But it will get easier to remember."
Remus opened his eyes and turned, lost to the hope he always felt when he conjured him so clearly. But there was nothing. There was no one. Everything was dark. The silence of Grimmauld Place was absolute. He wouldn't wind the clock.
