This book!!!!! So amazing!!!!! I adore Octavia Butler, and I adore Ibi Zoboi, so when I got this book signed by Zoboi at ALA this summer, I was over the moon! But I hadn't read it yet til now, when it just won an award and reminded me it was waiting like a jewel on my shelf - and WOW. I can't think of anyone more perfect to tell Butler's story than Zoboi - they were both introverted Dreamers who found refuge and inspiration in speculative fiction as kids, which shaped their journeys as groundbreaking authors. Zoboi tells her story in a beautiful blend of expository text, images, and and poetry, each enhancing each other and adding deeper layers, parallels, reflections. This is a biography like no other, expository literature at its height. I'm going to be recommending this to some of the aspiring authors in my school! #octaviabutler #octaviawasright #ibizoboi #sciencefiction #speculativefiction #afrofuturism #blacksciencefiction #blackauthors #blackbooksmatter #blackauthorsmatter #youngauthors #childrensbiographies #biographies #expositoryliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/CoizAKfssyc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

CHILDRENS BOOKS TO CELEBRATE WOMAN'S HISTORY MONTH Sonia Sotomayor: A Judge Grows in the Bronx / La juez que crecio en el Bronx (Spanish and English Edition) English/Spanish Edition By: Jonah Winter Description The inspiring and timely story of Sonia Sotomayor, who rose up from a childhood of poverty and prejudice to become the first Latino to be nominated to the US Supreme Court. Before Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor took her seat in our nation's highest court, she was just a little girl in the South Bronx. Justice Sotomayor didn't have a lot growing up, but she had what she needed -- her mother's love, a will to learn, and her own determination. With bravery she became the person she wanted to be. With hard work she succeeded. With little sunlight and only a modest plot from which to grow, Justice Sotomayor bloomed for the whole world to see. #purchasebook @amazon https://www.amazon.com/Sonia-Sotomayor-crecio-Spanish-English/dp/1442403039 Fourth image is of Sonia Maria Sotomayor today: #about Sonia Maria Sotomayor an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Viví Loves Science by Kimberly Derting is the latest in a series that includes the picture books Libby Loves Science, Cece Loves Science, and several early reader books. I adore these books for how they normalize and celebrate girls and POC in STEM, and their genuine excitement as they explore science in hands-on experiments and experiences.  In this title, Vivi is overjoyed to go to the aquarium with her class. When she wonders how fish can float when they swim, the guide introduces her class to a marine biologist, who explains and shows, using a balloon, how a fish's swim bladder works to increase and decrease their density so they can float and sink. The book, like the others in its series, provides instructions on the back for how kids can do the experiment themselves!  Love the inquiry, collaboration, and fascination with science in this book!  #earlyreaderbooks #earlyreaders #icanread #weneeddiversebooks #childrensbookillustration #childrensbiographies #girlsinsteam #girlsinstem #librariansofinstagram #schoollibrarian #teacherlibrarian #teachersofinstagram #primaryschool #primaryteacher #diversebooksmatter #childrensbooks #steambooks #marinebiologist #marinebiology https://www.instagram.com/p/CnQX8m5MqKl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

One Wish: Fatima al-Fihri and the World's Oldest University by M. O. Yuksel Do you ever read a book and instantly know who you want to recommend it to? That's me with this wonderful book by the author of last year's beyond-gorgeous In My Mosque, and I'm going to give it to her as soon as we get back from break. There are so many amazing Muslim authors writing phenomenal novels and picture books - but on the biography side, I don't often see a lot of female Muslim heroes highlighted. Malala Yousafzai is everywhere, and she is awesome, but there needs to be more and wider representation in biographies of all the brilliant Muslim women who have done so much in science, art, education, and more. Enter this wonderful biography of Fatima al-Fihri, the creator of the oldest existing university in the world. Fatima cherished education throughout her life, and dreamed of creating a school for everyone, free of charge, where anyone could study and achieve their dreams. After losing her home as a child to war, establishing a new life as a refugee, becoming a successful merchant, and losing her father and husband, Fatima decided to use her fortune to build the school she had always envisioned - one that would welcome all people, regardless of gender, wealth, or refugee status. According to the back matter, this university, among others of its kind, inspired Western universities like Oxford and Harvard, and facilitated academic and cultural exchange throughout the world. Serving as university, mosque, and library, her school cultivated scholars since 859 BCE - and still does, today. Now to write a note about this book for my student! Yay! #fatimaalfihri #muslimwomen #muslim #kidsbiographies #childrensbiographies #childrensbooks #childrensbookstagram #childrensliterature #librariansofinstagram #librariansfollowlibrarians #schoollibrarian #teachersofInstagram #teachersfollowteachers #mirrorsandwindows #muslimkidsbooks #diversebiographies https://www.instagram.com/p/CmezB3Sv7-d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I always love getting new books for the library, but the ones I've been excited about the most are ones about diverse inventors! Too often inventors of color, inventors who are women, or who are LGBTQ+ have been sidelined and pushed into the margins, their rightful credit given to members of the dominant culture. We need to know about their brilliance! So I was so excited to read this beautiful book about Sarah Elisabeth Jacobs, inventor of the space-saving cabinet bed. Born enslaved in the mid-1800s, Sarah Jacobs dreamed of becoming a carpenter, and as an adult, she achieved her dream, working side by side with her husband in her own furniture store. But many of Sarah's customers lived in small homes, unable to afford space for furniture - so she set out to find a solution. She invented, crafted, and tested her creation, persevering through difficulties and a rejection of her first patent application, and at last, her work was recognized! Her invention represented not only her ingenuity and creativity, but also her ability to realize her dreams. This book would make a wonderful read-aloud for classes teaching the Civil War and Reconstruction (Reconstruction doesn't get taught nearly enough, being left out of state standards or added on almost as an afterthought), or in a unit about inventors (I'm going to use this with my second graders in my inventing and inventors unit!). I love this book! #blackinventors #inventors #innovators #carpenters #carpentry #picturebooksofinstagram #picturebooks #librariansofinstagram #librariansfollowlibrarians #teachersofInstagram #teachersfollowteachers #schoollibrarian #schoollibrarian #schoollibrary #windowsandmirrors #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #blackhistory #reconstruction #childrensbiographies #childrensbooks #childrensbookstagram #diversebiographies https://www.instagram.com/p/CibD8yqvt7k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sisters: Venus and Serena Williams by Jeanette Winter - this absolutely gorgeous, poetic biography brings the two tennis superstars' experiences alive, centering their unbreakable bond as sisters. The strength of their sisterhood persists through growing up in a difficult neighborhood, facing bitter jealousy from other competitors, and health travails. Through their supportive family, who cultivated their skill through endless practice and their academic studies through high expectations, the sisters found the confidence to shine on the court. Winter's prose sparkles, zooming in on details like the swing of the beads in Venus' hair, the quiet moments of reading together at home, and the pause before entering a "sea of white faces" in competitions. And the illustrations! With deep colors and fantastical elements, Winter's art intertwines with her words, inseparable from each other in their cinematic style that bounces smoothly between seeing from the sisters' perspectives and head-on views from a fascinated reading audience. You need this biography in your life. #venusandserenawilliams #tennis #childrensliterature #childrensbooks #childrensbiographies #kidlit #kidbiographies #booksforkids #diversebooks #blackjoy #diversekidsbooks #diversechildrensliterature #sisters #blackfamiliesmatter https://www.instagram.com/p/CIthRevBaje/?igshid=1t9gel21xjlff

(Gifted) BOOK REVIEW: On Wings of Words: The Extraordinary Life of Emily Dickinson by Jennifer Berne, illustrated by Becca Stadtlander 🦋 . Happy release day to this gorgeous picture book biography! 📖 I was very excited to read this because I knew very little about Emily Dickinson’s life. What I especially love about the story, is that it’s written very lyrically to match Emily’s love for words. Another lovely touch is the quotes from Emily’s works that are integrated into the story. The illustrations are gorgeous, focusing mostly on the passion Emily had for the natural world. 🌿 Sometimes the artwork borders on fantastical to reflect the great imagination Emily had, as the beautiful cover shown here highlights! 😍 . Though I appreciate poetry, I often struggle to understand it fully, so I do wonder if children will be able to grasp some of the quotes scattered throughout the story. I do like that some information about reading and writing poetry is given at the back of the book to help kids get into it. . Thank you @abramschronicle for sending me a review copy! . . . #JohannasReviews #onwingsofwords #jenniferberne #beccastadtlander #emilydickinson #poetry #picturebook #picturebooks #childrensnonfiction #childrensbiography #illustrator #bookstagram #cozyaesthetic #momstagram #kidlit #childrensbooks #childrensillustration #bookcover #bookcoverart #beautifulbooks #kidliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/B8uuQBFAvdn/?igshid=f8i1knsfcyd7
