Independence Day Celebrations
India attained independence on 15th August 1947 and as a mark of respect & celebrations, Independence Day is celebrated on this day. Celebration of the day holds immense significance in the history of our country. In schools, this day is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm, not only to commemorate the hard-fought freedom but also to instill a sense of patriotism and respect for the country's heritage among students. The celebration of Independence Day in schools is a vibrant and memorable event which involves a blend of traditional ceremonies, cultural performances, flag hoisting, patriotic speeches, cultural exhibitions, arts & crafts shows, pledge taking, distribution of sweets and also outdoor social activities.
Preliminary preparations for celebrations for Independence Day in BBPS Solan commenced a month before 15th Aug. The children were explained various duties to be performed & the importance of each duty. The celebrations & various activities continued for over a week. During the week long celebrations the school organised various activities like drawing of national flag, making of national flag with origami sheets, slogan writing and painting of famous leaders etc. The objective of this week long celebrations was to inculcate a sense of patriotism, belongingness and an inherent feeling to do something for the upliftment of the nation. It was impressed upon the students that Independence comes with responsibilities toward one's nation and its citizens. The celebrations extended beyond classrooms through various outdoor activities viz social responsibilities, community service projects etc. Students were engaged in activities such as cleanliness drives, tree plantations, and visits to local charities. These initiatives contributed positively to our society and environment. The week long celebrations not only educated students about our countries history but have also left an everlasting impression on their impressionable minds in promoting a sense of belongingness and a sense of responsibility. The children were educated upon their duties and role to build the nation. It was brought out through above mentioned activities that it is not only the duty of the Government and the officials but each and every citizen is responsible for the upliftment of the nation. All these activities have left an everlasting impression on the minds one and all.
The Independence Day celebrations went beyond festivities. The celebrations served as a valuable educational tool for the children. The students were made aware that the independence of our beloved nation was not achieved in a day, it took many sacrifices of our own countrymen. Such exposures enhanced their understanding of the struggles which are ancestors underwent. They were tortured and even put to death by the rulers. The fruits of freedom which we are enjoying today have seen many struggles & hardships of our forefathers, leaders & freedom fighters.
On the Independence Day i.e. on 15th Aug 2023, despite bad weather and incidents of major landslides outside and also within the School campus, all the children could not make it for the flag hoisting ceremony. However, considering the importance the Independence Day was celebrated with the limited staff & children available within the campus. Flag hoisting was done by the School Administrator followed by the national anthem.

Primary and Secondary School Heads to Serve 15 Years Term Limits in New Agency Contracts
Tumblr media
Primary and Secondary School Heads to Serve 15 Years Term Limits in New Agency Contracts A new proposal by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) may introduce term limits for primary and secondary school heads. The proposal contends that, like other government institution heads, school heads are chief executives overseeing public funds and should have renewable term limits based on their performance. While the specific period of service is not defined, this proposal could result in school heads having contracts with expiry dates, departing from the current practice where they serve until retirement. ALSO READ: TSC Teachers Salary and Allowances for D3 T-13 Scale Principals & Deputy Principals In 2014, a similar proposal was put forth during Prof Jacob Kaimenyi's tenure as the Cabinet Secretary in charge of education. The suggestion was to limit school heads' service to a maximum of 15 years, divided into three terms of five years each. However, this proposal was dropped and did not become part of the regulations passed in 2015. Recently, the idea resurfaced as part of the discussions at an education stakeholders meeting chaired by Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang. The proposal, presented for consideration in the fine-tuning of the Basic Education Bill 2024 at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), advocates for term limits and emphasizes the need for accountability in managing public funds. In addition to the term limits proposal, there is a noteworthy suggestion to grant agency contracts to school heads. This proposal, if adopted, would designate school heads as agents of the Ministry of Education, allowing the Cabinet secretary to hold them accountable for mismanaging public funds. The Kenya Union of Post-primary Education Teachers supports this proposal, emphasizing the importance of clarifying the role of heads as agents of the ministry in law. ALSO READ: TSC Bank Form: Salary Payment Procedure and Accountability The proposed legislation also addresses amendments to various education sector laws, including the Universities Bill, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Bill, the Kenya National Qualifications Framework Bill, and the Tertiary Education Placement and Funding Bill. Additionally, amendments are proposed for the Kenya Literature Bureau Bill, Kenya National Examinations Council Bill, and Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development Bill. If enacted, the appointment of school heads as agents will be a significant development, as they will report to both the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Education. TSC will handle the hiring process, while the ministry will issue appointment letters designating them as agents for financial matters. This move aims to establish the ministry's authority in overseeing school funds, resolving ongoing disputes over the power to take action against school principals between TSC and the ministry.
