Not even talking about romance, I genuinely believe that Sans is the most important character in Toriel's life throughout Undertale.
Toriel herself flat out tells us about her intense loneliness, the weight of it, and her desire to not burden Frisk is part of why she lets them go. More subtle though are the signs that this loneliness is self-inflicted.
As the Queen and the brains behind the throne, Toriel had power. She had other options to oppose the sacrifice of children. She chose to seclude herself behind the massive door to the ruins.
And what about within it? See through Frisk's eyes, we get to know a kindly nurturer who teaches us to talk through problems rather than fight. But that's not how she herself handles conflict. The inhabitants of the ruins are "all too intimidated to talk to her." She does not hesitate to throw a fireball at Flowey before any words, and she handles the first Froggit with a threatening glar. I bet when you approach her, you get the glare first, and the fireball if you don't take the hint.
And why wouldn't she act this way? Undertale is a game where every monster attacks you by default, but that's not a generic game mechanic, it's a character motivation; they're trying to steal your soul to destroy the barrier. So by declaring herself protector of humans, Toriel has also declared war on every monster in the underground.
All this effort to completely alienate herself, to turn away from anyone would could support or understand her, because how could they possibly understand the pain of a mother? Thus she is lonely.
But what if there was a safe way to assuage that loneliness? Through a door. Knocking back and forth. It's just a game, a bunch of jokes. They don't even trade names, and Toriel certainly never opens the damn door. But Sans listens. He appreciates her. And he keeps coming back. Little by little, she shares parts of herself. Though cloaked in plausible deniability, her jokes are a way of telling Sans who she is and what's in her heart: "Old Lady who?" "She was feeling bonely."
I don't know that Sans would have guessed that he was Toriel's deepest bond remaining to her. Her desperate plea to protect the human reminds me of when I did personal care, and the elderly would sometimes try to give me random objects around the house or confess their deepest secrets. Not because of anything about me really. Just because I was the only person there, and I showed a bare minimum of politeness. Toriel didn't have anyone else. With something like this, she had to trust Sans.
And yeah, I do think that informs our understanding of how they act when they finally meet face to face, and how Toriel immediately buddies up to him. And why they text like huge dorks: it's one step closer than knocking on a stone wall

On love and sacrifices
There’s so much more to this scapegoating business and big sacrifices referenced in the Good Omens narrative than the literal goats. And they’re only getting bigger, louder, final.
But let’s take it slow and start with the beginning, quite literally — i.e., with the Good Omens 2 title sequence. As we follow Aziraphale and Crowley on their journey, the universe warps and their usual left and right side positioning switches during the magic show (not accidentally an act of trust and sacrifice required both from the angel and the demon). They stay so throughout the next scene, which is their little dance in the air, and after they seemingly get settled on the A. Z. Fell and Co.’s roof and back to normal, the flipped sky in the background suggests that something’s not quite right yet. In the central part of the shot looms a large, humanlike shadow of the Elephant Trunk Nebula.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The nebula is a part of a constellation called Cepheus, after an Ethiopian king from the Greek mythology who agreed to sacrifice his only daughter in order to appease the gods and end a local calamity started by her mother and his wife, Cassiopeia (talk about generational responsibility). With time and a delightfully ironic twist of fate, the name of said daughter, Andromeda, became more famous than that of her father. Although she was chained up to a rock and offered to the sea serpent Cetus, the girl was spotted by the warrior Perseus, casually flying over the sea — either on the back of the Pegasus or thanks to a pair of winged sandals — after his victory over Medusa. He fell in love on the spot, defeated the serpent (with the help of a magical sword or Medusa’s severed head, depending on the varying sources), and freed the princess. That’s not exactly where their story ends, but we won’t be getting into the rest here.
Tumblr media
Not surprisingly, Neil has mentioned two parallel child sacrifice stories from the biblical context back in August. The first is one of the big ones — The Binding of Isaac. God's command to sacrifice Isaac, his only son, was a test of Abraham's faith. The angel of the Lord intervenes and provides a ram to be sacrificed in the boy’s place.
The second one isn’t nearly as popular, but you might have heard a variant of it in fairy tales or as the Law of Surprise invoked in The Witcher saga. In exchange for Israel’s victory over its enemies in battle, Jephthah had rashly promised God to repay the debt with the first thing seen on his return back home. The victorious warrior didn’t suspect to see his only child moving innocently "to meet him with timbrels and with dances" though. In horror, Jephthah covered his eyes with his cloak, but to no avail: ultimately, he was forced to honor his vow to God, and the girl was sacrificed. As grisly as it might look like in the Old Master’s paintings, it’s important to remember that human sacrifices weren’t limited to physical offerings only — Jephthah’s daughter might have been offered to God in the sense of officially shunning her family and dedicating her life to service instead, probably sequestered in a temple somewhere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interestingly, the main character of a big chunk of the Bible and the reason for the Second Coming happens to be THE most influential child sacrifice in the modern history. You know, a certain 33-year-old carpenter sent by his Heavenly Father to die on a cross for the sins of the mankind? Someone better call Aubrey Thyme ASAP.
Circling back to Aziraphale, he could be also seen as a representative of the concept of filial piety, since Eden willing to personally take a Fall not only for the humanity’s collective or individual transgressions, but the shortcomings of his Ineffable Parental Figure as well. Our favorite angel angel always fights for what is right and good, sure, but why would that be even a thing if God was truly omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Aziraphale’s medal is anything to go by, it looks like we might get an answer from the way it’s introducing another mythological narrative into the game, that is the story of Daedalus and Icarus. The most absorbing thing about this is the stark contrast to the recurring child sacrifice references for S3 mentioned in this post — Daedalus isn’t a father who wanted to sacrifice his son, it was his attempt to save him from imprisonment that ultimately drove Icarus to his death. The boy ignored his father’s explicit instructions, committing the grave and culturally universal sin of disobedience to one's parents that simply couldn’t go unpunished, one way or another.
But Icarus’s transgression could be seen both as high-flying ambition and striving for personal accomplishment as well as humanitarian sacrifice for knowledge and humanity’s advancement in general.
Similarly to a certain angel who left everything for what superficially seems like a work promotion, but is the ultimate act of love — both for his demon and the children they have been protecting and nurturing together for six thousand years. From the very Beginning, his white wings have been shielding everything he holds dear in this world.

76 child sacrifice victims with their hearts ripped out found in Peru excavation
Tumblr media
The remains of dozens of child sacrifice victims have been unearthed in Peru, and many more are likely waiting to be found, archaeologists say.
The skeletons show evidence that the children's hearts were removed, said Gabriel Prieto, an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Florida who directs the excavations at Pampa La Cruz, the site near Huanchaco where the remains were found.
All 76 skeletons had a "transversal clean cut across the sternum," Prieto said, which suggests that "they possibly opened up the rib cage and then they possibly extracted the heart."
"They were buried on an extended position, with the feet toward the east," Prieto told Live Science in an email. "They were buried on top of an artificial mound." Read more.

Archaeologists Uncover Bodies of 76 Children with Hearts Removed in Peru
Archaeologists theorize that in keeping with the customs of the time, the children were victims of child sacrifice.
"They were buried on top of an artificial mound." It's not clear why the sacrifices were located in this position in this place. "We thought that the area, and particularly the mound, was free of Chimu child sacrifices, but we found the opposite," Prieto said.
Excavations have been underway at Pampa La Cruz for several years. So far, 323 child sacrifice victims have been found at the site, and another 137 child and three adult sacrifice victims were found at a nearby site called Las Llamas. These remains also show that the children's hearts had been removed.
Based on the archaeological finds found so far, there are likely many more child sacrifices waiting to be discovered near Huanchaco, Prieto said. "It could be more [than] 1,000 victims, as crazy as it sounds," he said.
Radiocarbon dating needs to be done on the 76 newly uncovered skeletons, but previously found victims at Pampa La Cruz dated to between A.D. 1100 and 1200, Prieto said. Around this time, the Chimu people, known for their fine metalwork and the city Chan Chan, flourished in the area.
Why the Chimu would have engaged in child sacrifice in this area on such a large scale is unclear, Prieto said, but the Chimu also built an artificial irrigation system and new agricultural fields nearby, and some of the sacrifices may have been done to "sanctify" this agricultural system.
People who lived in Huanchaco during the first millennium A.D. also practiced human sacrifice in the area, said Richard Sutter, an anthropology professor at Purdue University Fort Wayne, who is part of the team working at Huanchaco. This means that the Chimu may have been carrying on a long-running practice in the area, Sutter said in an email.

Over time it simply became more and more clear that the United States is basically where Judah and the Canaanites were: child sacrifice is simply a part of our culture—a sacrament, really. And if the right to do it is infringed or revoked, don’t be surprised when people respond with a religious fervor. After all, abortion is a religion as old as Molech. ~ Jesse Johnson

Quote
In Aeschylus, Agamemnon lures his daughter, Iphigenia, to a spot she thinks is for her wedding, as the chorus urges: “Hoist her over the altar like a yearling, give it all your strength … gag her hard.” Agamemnon agonized but felt he had to sacrifice his daughter to appease a goddess and be granted favorable winds to sail against Troy. Small sacrifice to get your fleet moving.   In Shakespeare, Titus Andronicus kills his daughter, Lavinia, at the dinner table, after she has been raped and maimed by attackers. “Die, die, Lavinia!” he cries. “And thy shame with thee.” Small sacrifice to save your honor.   On “Game of Thrones,” Stannis Baratheon orders his sweet child Shireen burned at the stake, as she cries out for the father she adores, so black magic will melt the snows. Small sacrifice to get your starving army on the march.   Now, however, I think of child sacrifice as a modern phenomenon, a barbaric one that defines this country. We are sacrificing children, not only the ones who die, but also those who watch and those who fear the future.   Children having their tomorrows taken away. Small sacrifice if we can keep our guns. Why not let every deranged loner buy an assault weapon?   America is not a mythical kingdom ruled by fickle gods or black magic. Our fate is not in the stars. It is in ourselves. It is within our power to stop schools from becoming killing fields.   We have simply decided not to do it. [ ... ]    The Republicans are doing everything they can to stop women from having control over their own bodies and doing nothing to stop the carnage against kids; they may as well change the party symbol from an elephant to an AR-15.
Maureen Dowd in the New York Times describes how the United States has adopted chid sacrifice as a result of the Republican Party’s attempts to appease the false gods of the NRA.
Republicans have adopted the practices of what they would call a shithole country. It’s time to flush Republicans from public office.

Excavated Canaanite High Place: "the sin of the Amorites"
Expedition Bible
In 1902, archaeologist Stewart Macalister began excavating at Gezer. He soon realized that he was digging a Canaanite high place where the ancient inhabitants of the city had worshipped their gods.
There he unearthed deeply disturbing evidence for “the iniquity of the Amorites,” which corroborated the Canaanite worship practices described in the Bible.

Sending Angels, Georgia Guidestones, & Washington Monument Falling
Sending Angels, Georgia Guidestones, & Washington Monument Falling
Background: Sending Angel Armies I thought it crazy that we might have hosts of angels under our authority to command according to God’s word, even though is says  “Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14, ESV)   In the Greek, it does not say “for the sake of”    It actually says “Are they not all ministering…
