November 6th, 2022 at 10:56am my best friend (cheech) died in my arms.

He lived such a long and happy life. If you knew me and met him, he reflected me: happiness. He always had a smile on his face, except when there was food, he would look focused instead, lol.

His final hours I gathered him up in his favorite blanket, I put on his collar when he knew it was time to walk, I walked out that door and every step was excruciating. I felt him perk up once we got to my car. He was too weak to stand or really move but I could tell how excited he was. During our drive, my mission was to get us to his favorite lake. It would be twenty minutes but it was worth it. The entire drive he held on, he barely looked out the window but I could tell how grateful he was. Arriving at the lake, I cuddled him for a moment, I could feel his breaths growing weaker. I walked to the beach, cradling him as I felt his head slightly shift towards the water. I made my way to the sand, laid him on his blanket, facing the water and turned on Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (live). He laid still, breathing faintly as the song played and my eyes watered. The tears fell as the middle part came and I kept my hand on his body the whole time. When the song ended I could feel he was ready to go, but still holding on. I pulled him close to me and kissed his forehead as his eyes started to close. I whispered “you’ve been the best boy” and before I made it to the car, he was gone.

Our connection was nothing short of a miracle. I attained him from a friend during a fight with my mom, I told her I’m going to get a dog and the next day my friend was giving him away. He came fully grown, maybe 4-5 already. It was history from there.

I had cheech from December 2013 until November 2022. In the end he was still fighting. Just before he passed, he used the last of his energy to run up the stairs to my apartment, waited for me at the top. I realized when I looked at him, it would be the last time, ever. He knew it too, because he waited and on the way to the door, he rushed in. He wanted to pass away with me and not before I could bring him home.

I’m so grateful for having him apart of my life. He survived every boyfriend I’ve ever had, and was the only boy who never broke my heart (on purpose). He was diagnosed with a terminal illness in January 2022 and was told he had days maybe weeks and he was not ready to go then. I had so much more time with him than I ever thought I would.

I’m so proud of how long and hard he fought. Every day was easier knowing I would get to care for him, the way he cared for me. I asked for unconditional love and God brought me Cheech.

I will forever love and miss the little guy. Until we meet again.

Rest easy, you deserve it.
