solavellan rivalmance things
since I'm replaying Virelan's file and she and Solas are actively hostile to one another in Haven, I thought I'd write up my idea of how it'd go if the da2 rivalmance system stayed in place and was better
the only two elves at the heart of chantry forces in the middle of a mage rebellion for how long? surrounded by people who assume they'd get along by nature of their matching ears? just adds insult to injury that Varric jokes about their conflict from the very first instant they speak (they're not Fenris and Merrill, Varric, please I'm begging)
they're drawn together by familiarity that's on this side of wrong, more willing to sit together and fight than be alone and at peace
the nights grow longer and so do their arguments, which turn into debates, which turn into stories, until it's almost dawn and neither of them have slept
Lavellan calls him 'flat ear' — he curses them in elvhen so old that their Dalish dialect can't parse it apart
Lavellan clings to Dalish tradition and prays the prayers every morning in camp, just to spy Solas regarding them with something like pity, or grief
he corrects their elvhen pronunciation and grammar — they call him 'hahren (derogatory)'
"I saw it in the —" "Elgar'nan, we know!"
Lavellan dismisses blood magic as evil and spirits as non-persons but they keep asking questions, more and more questions, and Solas isn't sure if they're asking because they're curious or because they want to mock him
he doesn't stop answering though
Lavellan notices at first that he only looks at their vallaslin when he speaks to them... and by the time they close the Breach, he glares into their eyes
Lavellan protects him, like they promised, and they shout at him to be more careful
Solas heals their wounds and scolds them under his breath… but it sounds suspiciously like worry
Lavellan tells Solas to go when Corypheus attacks Haven, pushes him towards the Pilgrim’s Path and doesn’t let him follow as they distract the dragon alone
He searches for them in the snow in the aftermath, a mournful, enraged wolf howling in the storm — why could they not have listened?
Lavellan’s alive
The sensible choice is to lead them to his home, his heart, where he held the sky back — he feels it too as Skyhold falls in love with Lavellan and their Inquisition
They find him in a dream, and things are easier for him in the Fade
“You’re the one who started with tongue” “I did no such thing!”
I mean I could go on lol

Out of curiosity, what direction would you have taken Cullen's character in Inquisition? Or would you have included him at all? :3
oh man well
first of all i’m not sure i’m the best person to answer the question because i am profoundly uninterested in cullen. even in dao, his most cohesive appearance by a mile, where he features in my favourite origin, he um... he sure is there! he serves his narrative purpose! i don’t know what else to say
more in the spirit of actually answering your question, i think dragon age inquisition is as fundamentally incapable of making good use of cullen as a game that would make cullen part of its main squad inherently must be. dragon age inquisition is not capable of breaking down what is wrong with the templars, which is why you get... i don’t know why people call it a redemption arc even in quotation marks. he just shows up. he still supports the templars, and would rather you go to them, who shouted you down in the street, than the mages, who by all appearances straight up invite you over. he has not had to face the consequences of his work in the templar order or his treatment of mages; for all intents and purposes, from his perspective, all he did wrong was not notice that his knight-commander was an anomaly who was crazy. he is fundamentally the exact same guy who told me to my face mages were not people, except he’s polite about it now, because this is dragon age inquisition and we all just need to shut up and come together to defeat the Real Problems. it is completely canonically possible for him to have taken part in two circle annulments, one of which he personally instigated. dragon age inquisition does not care!
so to take cullen in a decent direction for his character—if you insisted on bothering to include him in yet another game at all—you would have to be writing him in a different game than the one where the hero has no choice but to lead an organisation with cassandra and cullen at their side, where every challenge to that organisation’s divine purpose is laughed off. (meanwhile one seemingly humble elven apostate, who actually has entirely other concerns, is the only compulsory mage. no rebel aligned mages are even optional companions in the game.)
i am interested in what it would theoretically take to write a compelling ex templar character. my own inquisitor is an ex templar! dragon age is a series designed to challenge your ideas of what backgrounds allies can come from, and designed to throw in your face that, for better or worse, good or evil, everyone on every side is also a person who believes they have their own reasons to do what they do. but if you wanted the ex templar character to be cullen, you have to challenge the foundations of his beliefs as a templar. you have to make him... actually regret being a templar? criticise the templars for anything other than imperfect service to the chantry and impolite wording of their deadly prejudices? you might even want to consider centring his personal quest on, hey, the terrible things he’s done and believed, not on the harm to the poor little stoic self-sacrificing templars
sorry this is coming across a little aggressive. you see why i’m the wrong person for the job. i don’t like cullen and he was an antagonistic force in the previous two games who my characters felt personally threatened by. i don’t see why i have to swallow that he’s one of the good guys now without him facing a single consequence, much like cassandra, who was introduced interrogating my friend. (but hey, this religious army has good intentions!) and i certainly don’t see why you would not only do all that but make him the face of a ludicrously flat, wish fulfillment romance only available for women of the conventionally attractive races (available for circle mages! with a throwaway line about how she’s not like the other girls to address it!) to get straight married and settle down with a dog and a picket fence. (i’m not saying there is no place for wish fulfillment romances whose only stumbling block is cutesy awkwardness. but that’s not what dragon age is for! where’s the teeth! it’s representative of a wider tone change in dai that i deeply dislike and if i get onto it i’m going to make this post so long. and with this man?)
idk i think cullen should have been the rogue templar breaking rules to hunt wardens in awakening and sigrun should’ve got to cut his head off. the end. that’s my ideal. sorry again

thinking abt. things.
things like solas not joining the inky for a given mission and discovering smth in his books that might help track the red templars so he brings the info to cullen only to find him shaky and sweaty and obv cullen tries to brush it off but look me in the eye and tell me solas wouldn't recognize withdrawal for what it is
mini fic bc I can:
He hasn't actually been to the Commander's room before, but he found something useful. He would normally bring it to the Inquisitor's attention, but they were out on the field and it seemed redundant to hand it off to someone else, especially since there were few he trusted to properly convey the intricacies of the information. Besides, there was no reason for him to fear Cullen. There had been countless opportunities for him to push back against Solas or the other mages, but he seemed truly dedicated to setting aside his past as a Templar. The role, if not the abilities.
Because of this, Solas entered the office lightly. What he found was... surprising.
Cullen looked haggard, worn, with deep circles under his eyes. He also looked absolutely shocked by Solas' presence, straightening up and trying to compose himself. Trying... and failing. A better posture couldn't hide the sweat shining on his face - inappropriate, considering they were high in the mountains, surrounded by snow and ice - nor the trembling of his hands, even though he tried to still then by laying them flat on his desk. "Solas," came his delayed, stiff greeting. He inclined his head slightly to the Commander in response, then moved nearer and set the book down on the desk. Cullen looked at it with obvious curiosity, but Solas no longer intended to discuss it. Not at the moment, anyway.
"Look at me," he said instead, voice far firmer than he ever would have thought to use with Cullen. The human seemed quite as surprised, gaze snapping up. "Focus on me. Breathe."
"What are you-"
"I said breathe," he insisted. Cullen continued to stare for a moment before doing as he said, although it was more a huff or sigh than a true breath. Solas arched a brow. "Breathe deeply."
Cullen frowned but obeyed, taking a deep, genuine breath and exhaling slowly. "Good," Solas said gently. "Feel the desk under your hands. The air against your skin." He watched a furrow grow between Cullen's brows. "Do not concern yourself with these things, just feel them." The Commander let his eyes slip shut as he focused, face relaxing slightly. "Keep breathing. Do you feel the cold air? Concentrate on how it feels in your nose, your throat, your lungs."
Slowly his trembling eased, although Solas knew it wouldn't disappear. He'd seen people go through this: in the flesh and in the Fade both. He knew deep breathing wouldn't counteract the physical effects of withdrawal - he had to assume from lyrium, distantly impressed by Cullen's willingness to undergo such a risk, to break the chains the Chantry and the Templar Order bound him in - but it would help with the feelings of panic. With the sense of being unable to possibly withstand such horrible feelings and urges.
"Good," he said again. Cullen had continued taking deep breaths, eyes still closed as he concentrated on his immediate surroundings instead of his panic. "This is normal. It hurts, I know, and your body is fighting you. But you still have control. You are stronger than this."
"Am I?" Cullen's eyes opened at last, meeting his with a strange desperation. Solas nodded.
"You are. To have gotten this far is evidence enough." Cullen snorted, then shook his head.
"So, who told you?" Cullen asked, Solas arching a brow.
"No one." Now the human frowned again.
"Then how..."
"I recognized your condition." Cullen stared for a time, searching Solas' face before eventually shaking his head and standing upright.
"You are... thoroughly unexpected, Solas." A pause, as if he was debating whether to say more. "Thank you." He inclined his head slightly.
"My pleasure, Commander."

Updated: 2023/12
I originally posted this on my old blog. Since posting that, I've found other foods, drinks and ingredients. As of now this list is updated with everything found in media released as of Oct 2023.
Like the original, this is still a very long post that contains all canonical desserts, dishes, drinks, ingredients, and sauces. Unlike the original, I could not list canonically suggested food and ingredients, nor every codex, item, letter, ect in the sources. Because it was too long. I did add them to the individual post.
Like in the individual posts, the list has the country of origins next to each item and any relevant information. Such as ingredients, use, notes, or trivia. For the canonically suggested foods and drinks I list what their real world uses are for your reference as to what they might be used for in Thedas.

The ingredients are flour, salt, butter, water, apples (golden apples from Lady’s Orchard preferred but others are acceptable substitutions), brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. (Orlesian)
Minced Pie - filled with finely chopped fruit and sweet things.
Pudding
Blancmange - A white pudding made of milk or heavy cream, its name is Orlesian for "white eating". I have no idea why but I absolutely hate how Ameridan' story was handled, they basically dumbed it down to him worshipping both the creators and andraste/chant of light, which kind of proved Cassandra's dumb (and incredibly disrespectful) point of an inquisitor having "room for another god". It's also so unfair how they made the evanuris to just be power hungry slavers and tyrants, my only hope is that if the creators were disproving then I hope it would be the same for the chant of light and maker (seeing asnit was solas who made the veil and not the creator) I really hate how centrist the game has gotten, like flat out, whenever I hear the words grey morality and nuance I can't help burn cringe, that's how much dragon age has ruined it for me.
It's also so incredibly funny how the devs are genuinely surprised that most of the players are pro mage, like of course we are?
i think it's particularly extremely aggravating, the way bioware writers write about a pantheon as if polytheistic religions are simply a thing of the past and dead and some kind of mystery/mythology. according to bioware, this kind of writing for polytheistic religions is fine because no real religion these days would everrrrrrr worship multiple gods /sarcasm. (note that the links are just some examples and not comprehensive in the least)
there's a lot of writing choices i quite simply disagree with in dai, and there's some that are just... i don't even disagree with them because that implies it's something to argue about. some of their writing choices are just wrong. after borrowing so heavily from ethnic groups to shape their fictional histories, the disrespect of writing their fictional oppressed minorities as being responsible for their own oppression because they were not "open" enough to include/absorb expy christianity into their religious beliefs and fought back against violent colonialism. the resulting clumsy collation between isr*el and the indigenous people of the americas wanting to reclaim their lands stolen from them by white colonisers makes my blood boil.
ameridan is just another piece of the puzzle that makes me seethe. we have a man who apparently ~existed before hostilities between the elves and the humans~ which is now the fault of drakon's son who invaded the dales after ameridan was long gone. that's already absolute bullshit because ameridan lived in the fucking dales. elves only started living in the dales AFTER ANDRASTE'S REBELLION. after the fall of arlathan, and hundreds of years of enslavement at the hands of tevinter humans???
additionally, the battle of red crossing happened in 2:9 glory, but tensions between the elves and humans had been building up since the second blight. drakon the first died in 1:45 but the elves apparently did "nothing" to help montsimmard when it was overrun by darkspawn in 1:25 divine - twenty years before his death, there was already simmering resentment. additionally, it was drakon the first that expanded the orlesian empire and the orlesian chantry - wotv2 notes his battles against the darkspawn did more to spread the chant of light (specifically, the orlesian chant of light which he, yknow, fucking made up) than any of his other attempts. by the time the exalted march on the dales happens, over three quarters of thedas is under orlesian rule. maferath himself handed the dales to the surviving elves from andraste's campaign in -165 ancient and the elves lived in the dales peacefully until the orlesian chantry was salivating at its borders. and the orlesian chantry has a history of wiping out "cults" - i.e. other sects of their own religion that differ from belief, no matter how minor, to their own. including, notably, the wholesale genocide of a non-violent sect centered around fertility rituals and, later, the dragon worshipping sect in haven off their own land. (and i'm willing to BET MONEY that they were originally alamarri themselves, considering that andraste was brought there to rest, and considering how cultural variance in religion usually occurs [i.e. through the blending/adoption of folk beliefs or the cultural/religious practices from Before]. so the andrastians slaughtered the cult AND THEN TOOK THEIR FUCKING LAND.)
the entire way andrastianism is treated in inquisition makes me violent. and unfortunately, it does not look like it's going to change - there's been multiple statements about how the maker's existence will continue to remain "a mystery" out of a reluctance to confirm or deny the existence of a One True God which, coupled with how they've shat on every other religion in the game - the tevinter chantry, the qun, the stone, the elven pantheon, every other sect worshipping the maker/andraste - gives me absolutely no hope that the writing team is going to get their heads out of their asses about it.

Text
Alistair holds the Grey Wardens on a pedestal, this much is clear. He sees them as this good and heroic guild of warriors and mages who are willing to sacrifice themselves to save Thedas. but that's not entirely the case,
To Alistair, the guild is far too righteous to accept Loghain into their ranks, but Loghain is more than experienced and even...better to become a Warden.
Depending on your origin in the first game, you're a criminal brought to the grey wardens because of a chance arrangement with Duncan or because you're already infected by the Blight, which in that case you have no other choice but to join the wardens and abandon your previous life.
The Grey Wardens are a faction filled with criminals in all degrees who abandoned their lives to die for a better cause and surely Alistair must know this, surely he's met Wardens who were murders, thieves, bandits, and other lowlifes before they died at Ostagar. so why does he hold them on such a high pedestal as this beacon of good?
because they're the closest thing Alistair has to a family unit.
Alistair grew up thinking his mother was just some servant woman who got pregnant by the King and neither parent wanted him, so they sent him away to live with Arl Eamon, who then sent him away to the Chantry to be trained as a Templar. Alistair has never had a stable parental or familial figure in his life he can look up to, so when Duncan recruits him into the Wardens he finally has that. he has a mentor and father figure in Duncan and he flat-out sees the Wardens as his brothers and sisters. while that term may just be used in a "brothers in arms" type of way, I personally don't think it is, When the Hero of Ferelden is brought to Ostagar, Alistair immediately has a connection with you and by that point, you're not even an official warden yet, and if you're not romancing him, Alistair is protective over you as a big brother would be, interrogating Zevran about his intentions with you.
Alistair looks at the Wardens with rose-tinted glasses, this entire order is his life. his friends, everything Alistair is, he can attribute to the Wardens. even his real birth mother was a Warden. so much of Alistair's identity is that of the Grey Wardens and the very idea of Loghain becoming a warden taints that vision Alistair has created for himself

can i get your mary having Realizations. maybe at the day of her wedding?
omg TY for this prompt i love talking about mary but very rarely actually write about her. this stumped me for a little while because everything that happens at her wedding requires SOO much context that i had no idea how to start, and it felt ooc to just have cullen suddenly do something so terrible. so here's him and mary just kind of sucking in unique and strange ways. this takes place juust before the wedding when everyone is beginning to gather at the winter palace.
mild tw for vomit mention and templar ptsd-esque nightmares (???).
Mary awoke in Cullen's arms. Their bed at the Winter Palace was bigger and softer than any she'd ever slept in - she and Cullen gravitated towards the middle of the feather mattress together, leaving a large indent that would inevitably linger after they crawled out of it in the morning, waiting for their return later that evening.
Cullen never looked more like a Templar than when he was sleeping. It was strange - Mary had heard (and, she was ashamed to admit, read in Varric's romance novels) that people were supposed to look innocent in sleep. Haunted heroes became innocent boys, creased foreheads smoothed, racing thoughts slowed.
But Cullen's brow remained creased as he dreamed. He muttered to himself, kicked, scratched, growled like a dog. Sometimes, he frightened Mary. She'd cling to him in the dark, heart pounding, as he whispered cruel words at some imagined threat that taunted him behind his eyelids.
Were all Templars like this? Were there thousands of people all across Thedas just like her? People who lay awake with their palms flat against their lovers' sweaty backs, thanking the Maker that they weren't born a mage? Was she just unlucky? Or was this, as Hawke had darkly insinuated that final time they'd spoken, exactly what she deserved?
According to Varric's stories, Mary had a duty here. She was Cullen's reward at the end of a difficult road, a symbol of all he had lost and gained. She was supposed to comfort him, to soothe and fix his troubled soul - her arms designed to wrap around him like bandages, her kiss the perfect antivenom.
But on nights like this, when she pressed her lips to his twitching cheek, the taste of stale sweat always made her draw back with disgust.
One night early in their relationship, Cullen had drunk far too much and vomited all down himself. Shuddering and crying, he'd reached out for comfort. The smell of his breath, beer and vomit mingling together, had made Mary turn and run, leaving him alone on the floor in his own filth. The next morning, he'd kissed her chastely on the cheek at breakfast and his breath had smelled of peppermint.
It was easy to resent him for drinking like that. Many women resented their men for drink.
"Drink doesn't make men into beasts," her mother had whispered to her one night before bed, not loud enough to cover her father's heavy snores in the next room, "it just tells us which ones have beasts hiding inside them."
After that, she'd spent years of her childhood trying to see who did and didn't have a beast inside of them. She wasn't sure about her father - if he was a beast, he was nothing but an old bear, loud but too tired and lazy to do any harm. A few of the Chantry Mothers, the ones who would rap her on the knuckles when she giggled during the Chant, seemed to have dragons inside of them. The men who fought outside the taverns late at night were wolves, howling at the moon with their hackles up. And the girl in the portrait that hung above the fireplace in Mary's bedroom stared at her with the eyes of a songbird.
Cullen had something inside of him as well, but Mary wasn't sure if it was a beast. A beast, after all, could be killed.
As his dreams became more violent, so did his body. He writhed in her arms, as if a demon was taking over him. Mary held him tighter.
"She'll regret it," he muttered, "she'll be sorry soon."
Mary shuddered. Trying to distract herself, she traced the muscles in his back with a morbid fascination, feeling as they shifted and bulged unnaturally. If she'd been a healer, she might have understood how muscles worked - the violent snap and pull of them beneath her fingers might have been cause for gentle concern rather than a sensation that revolted her. But the inner workings of the human body were as good as witchcraft.
Cullen groaned, "kill it," he said, so loud that Mary squeezed her eyes shut and prayed that nobody else could hear, "kill it now!"
Whatever he was dreaming of terrified him. He cried out and twitched, kicking Mary hard enough in the shin that she yelped and pushed him away roughly enough to wake him up.
Cullen's eyes flew open. He stared directly at Mary, panting.
"Oh, thank the Maker," he whispered.
Mary stared back at him, keeping her eyes half closed as if she'd just woken up, "hmm?"
He looked like was going to cry. To Mary's horror, his trembling lips embarrassed her; she edged away from him a little, hoping he wouldn't notice.
"I was dreaming," Cullen said, "it was just a dream. A terrible dream."
Mary didn't respond. This was exactly how this scene played out in every single one of Varric's stories. She swallowed her disgust and reached out to brush Cullen's hair from his sweaty forehead, almost gagging as her fingers met his wet skin.
"Just a nightmare." She agreed, hoping Cullen didn't notice how flat her voice was.
Cullen, Maker help him, closed his eyes at Mary's touch. He lay there and shook as she stroked his hair, tense shoulders beginning to relax. That innocence he lacked in sleep was plain on his face now - he looked like someone Mary had never met before, someone she wasn't sure she would ever meet again.
"What was the dream about?" She tried.
Opening his eyes, Cullen stared at her for a long moment. His gaze passed over her face, lingering on each detail for so long that she almost found herself blushing.
Only when Mary was sure that he'd forgotten she'd asked him a question did he answer her:
"You." He said.
It should have been a shock, should have made her blood freeze, but in that moment his answer seemed like the most logical thing in the world.
Mary continued to stroke his hair, "what happened to me?"
"You were possessed," Cullen closed his eyes again, sleepy, "an abomination."
"Did you kill me?"
He was halfway back asleep now. He leaned in closer and wrapped an arm around Mary's waist, "I did," he whispered, "I killed it."
And then he stuck his face into Mary's neck, his hair brushing her collarbone, and fell straight back asleep.
Mary didn't sleep again. She stayed awake, palms against Cullen's sweaty back, and thanked the Maker that she wasn't born a mage until the sun was high in the sky.

Foods of Thedas: Master Post
Here is the very, very long and complete list of all dishes, ingredients, and drinks in Thedas as of Tevinter Nights.
This compiles all the canon posts. My headcanons are separate from this list to avoid any confusion but you can find it linked along with the other individual posts below.
Like in the individual posts, the list has the country of origins next to each item and any relevant information. Such as ingredients, use, notes, or trivia. For the canonically suggested foods and drinks I list what their real world uses are for your reference as to what they might be used for in Thedas.

I mean if your looking for injury prompts... I'll take one “Okay. Okay, here’s what we’re gonna do—fuck.” for what ever ship or characters or fandoms floats you little boat right now 💖
In the story he'd tell later, the Seeker pacing before him wearing a scowl heavier than all that Chantry-issued armor of hers, there'd be applause. It would be raucous and wild, interspersed with high, thrilled whistles and whoops from the audience and combatants alike. The throne room would glow with moonlight and the glint of steel raised high. And the Champion? The Champion would be resplendent in her regalia, in her victory; she would stand at the foot of the Viscount's seat with her arms up and out, waiting until the proper number of eyes were upon her to take a nimble yet exaggerated bow.
But tonight, Varric had no way of knowing that. Tonight, all he knew was dread.
Because when the screaming stopped and the terrified weeping began, when the last of the honor guard lay twitching and dying on the floor, he felt for the first time the stillness that had stolen over the keep, and realized its cause. The Arishok had fallen, true, but so had Hawke.
And she wasn't getting up.
In the story he'd tell later, his slow smirk a calculated guard against the knife at his throat, they'd all be there. The whole lot of them, swaggering and smiling, clapping each other on the backs even as they waved. Rivaini would be blowing kisses to the crowd, dropping lascivious winks to the ones shouting loudest; Blondie would be patching up whatever bump or bruise he could find; Choir Boy, Maker be praised, would not be there at all.
But tonight, Aveline was grey-faced and grim. She saw him coming and turned with a soldier's precision, barking unnecessary orders to keep the horrified looky-loos away - away from the scene, away from the blood, away from the corpses.
Tonight, Daisy had her hands splayed over the shallow rise and fall of Hawke's chest, the glow of her magic too dim for his liking, dark blood pooling at her knees as exhaustion gathered in her eyes.
Tonight, Hawke had not yet been named Champion. Tonight, Hawke had no as-named regalia. Tonight, Hawke was a street thug, an underground menace in secondhand leathers, the sort of hardknock scrapper Kirkwall bred like a rancorous Broodmother. Tonight, there was no legend attached to Hawke's name, she was just Hawke - his partner, his friend, his confidante, his better half, his worse half, his springboard, his voice of reason, the devil on his shoulder, all that remained.
And she just kept bleeding.
In the story he'd tell later, watching with well concealed disdain as the Seeker's eyes grew wider and wider, as her fingers clenched tighter and the vein in her neck gave away the racing of her heart, he'd say the jokes were never-ending, that the first words out of Hawke's mouth as the Knight-Commander grimly thanked her for doing what was, in essence, her own duty, were a snappy little quip that had the audience hooting and hollering for more.
Tonight, it was Daisy who spoke first, eyes wide when they met his, one moment shining furiously with hope, the next flat with abject terror. "She's breathing," she said, her inflection brittle, upward, uncertain. "She's--she isn't..."
Hawke's eyes didn't open, not even to flutter, but her mouth fell into the shape of a wince as she took a deeper breath than the one before. "I can hear you," she breathed - wheezed, really - then flexed her fingers as though if only to prove she could. "Aveline too. For a moment there...almost thought it was Mother...ushering me to the other side." Her wince deepened as she moved something she shouldn't've, and the strength went out of Varric's legs. "Foolish me, I suppose. Mother never...yelled with that much...affection."
"Okay," he heard himself saying as if from very, very far away, "okay, here's what we're going to do. We--fuck." It all collapsed on him at once; the blood, the stink of death thickening around them, the realization they were not immortal, not a single one of them, and despite all the scrapes they'd narrowly managed to squeeze their way out of, there was a very real, very terrifying possibility that Hawke would never again saunter her way through the door of his suite at the Hanged Man and demand to be put on his tab.
But then there was a hand on his - cool and bloody and far too light, but aware and animated and alive. "Flattered, darling, truly. Perhaps...not in front of the hoi polloi, hm? Imagine the...ugh...the gossip tomorrow."
Daisy's head snapped up again, her breath catching as she spoke. "She's making jokes! If she's making jokes, she can't be hurt that badly, can she?"
In the story he'd tell later, she wouldn't be.
Tonight, though...tonight she was.
He lied anyway, folding Hawke's hand up in both of his, praying the boots he heard rushing towards them were Anders's and not another hapless Templar's. "That's a good point, kid," he said to Merrill, praying too that if he told the story loudly enough, that would somehow make it true. "No one makes jokes when they're hurting. She's probably fine."
In the story he'd tell later, she would be.
But then, of course, in the story he'd tell later, she always was.

What makes Leliana the worst written companion in your opinion? Genuinely curious, she’s my fav and I hate the Chantry lol.
oh it’s not like i’m bashing her personally for being a chantry girl! there are a lot of well written characters with opinions i don’t agree with at all, i think wynne for example is by contrast easily one of the best in dao
i just don’t find dao leliana very well written on a technical level. her character is confusing and not imo in a good complex realistic way. it’s like they wanted to write a nice chantry girl next door to contrast morrigan and also their orlesian bard concept and they decided to just staple the two characters together. her personal quest is terrible, with some of the worst dialogue AND voice acting in the game (seriously? marjolaine outright saying “you ARE me” in the worst french accent i’ve ever heard? constantly calling her “my leliana”? has anyone here heard of show don’t tell for the love of god can i get an ounce of subtlety.) when she chips in during game dialogue it’s always to be “nice” in a flat, non-specific way that generally rings hollow for me, i don’t find it convincing or endearing or entertaining. none of that game dialogue ties in at all to the conclusion of her personal quest where we’ll suddenly act like leliana being anything like marjolaine is relevant despite her not being capable of manipulating a kitten. (she came directly up to the warden and told them she was joining them because god told her to. everyone the warden was with immediately thought she was crazy. sophisticated bard!) her banters are a contradictory mess where this supposed trained entertainer/spy is incredibly easily riled and tricked and scandalised by any member of the party, where she’s at once described as boyish with ragged hair and frigid because she’s too afraid of messing up her hair, and where despite her layered past she displays an incredibly shallow naive and worst of all uninteresting idea of morality
sorry for how damning all that sounds JGSJSJSKSKS. i promise i love leliana and in dai i think she’s brilliant i adore every scene. i’m just always frustrated by her writing in dao i don’t think it comes together. i don’t expect people to agree and personally i would love to be convinced otherwise but there it is

been replaying da2 as a mage again, i'm still in act 1, and it really sunk in this time that cullen can learn that hawke is a mage as early as mid-act 1, during the quest "enemies among us", when wilmod is revealed to be an abomination and cullen & hawke fight together. at this point, hawke is just a random unknown (or hawke can have bethany / anders / merrill in the party, and cullen can witness them fighting too) yet cullen doesn't comment on it, or presumably tell meredith about it, because at this stage of the game, meredith has literally no reason to spare hawke. they have no status, and have done nothing especially major for kirkwall / the templars, other than this exact quest, i suppose, but it certainly does bethany no good if a non-mage hawke doesn't take her to the deep roads.
obviously there's the fact that hawke is a video game protagonist and therefore the game can only really work if they get more leeway than anyone else unless the writers are willing to add in a whole additional quest just for mages specifically, or to tailor every subsequent quest around the fact that hawke is an apostate. a lot of cullen and meredith's lack of action re: mage!hawke can be chalked up to that, but it's more satisfying, narratively, to consider that cullen does not perceive hawke or their companions as dangerous apostates that need to be apprehended.
i find cullen so fascinating in da2, even at the start before things are really falling apart enough for him to take a stand, because even when he has no idea who hawke is, even when hawke shows up and uses magic at his side like 10 seconds after they meet, cullen is receptive to what hawke has to say about mages. in my first playthrough, i played blue hawke, this time i'm playing purple hawke, and even while i sarcastically introduced myself with something along the lines of "oh, templars are torturing their own now, too?" cullen doesn't actually get defensive in the face of hawke's blatant instigation. he's focused on his duty and explains what he's doing with no real heat. (and i love that while he acts aggressive with wilmod originally, after the fact, he says he only needed to scare wilmod into telling the truth and that wilmod "needed to believe it was genuine", which of course isn't really an excuse for treating someone aggressively, but it says so much about cullen and his preferred methods. bad cop, so to speak, not actually intending harm until they have no choice.)
then when you return to the gallows later to wrap up the quest, this is when cullen's infamous "mages can't be treated like people" line appears, but in the context of cullen literally just finding out hawke is an apostate and doing nothing about it, it rings so hollow, like he's speaking out of fear (because of what he experienced in kinloch hold, which he does bring up during this quest) or regurgitating chantry / templar order propaganda whether he truly believes it deep down or not. he's been told that mages are dangerous since he was a child, and he's been hurt by abominations, it's so easy for him to just fall back on that rhetoric. even when faced with evidence to the contrary, people who have been manipulated / indoctrinated are, at first, quick to refuse the scary new implications and grasp onto the safety of what they've been taught to believe.
and hawke can flat out say "you're wrong". they can remind cullen that they're a mage. cullen is absolutely still confident in what he's been taught, but he also doesn't get angry, he's actually receptive to what hawke says. it realistically wouldn't be possible for him to immediately understand that the chantry is entirely wrong and just shed all the ideas he's had hammered into him from childhood, but you can see already that he's open to eventually changing his mind. personally, i like that it's a slow progression. it's more realistic and satisfying. i really like that hawke can get through to him as the acts go on, and your dialogue with him is rewarded in the end. i like that he can know hawke is an apostate but not turn on them. cullen has a lot to mentally sort through and i really enjoy watching him grow, not just in this game, but following into dai.

Happy Friday!! How about ❝  i’m not gonna pretend anymore.  i’m still fucked up from it all and i don’t know when it gets better.  ❞ from the emotionally charged sentence starters? For a pairing of your choice?
Thank you for the prompt! For @dadrunkwriting, a bit of pre-dorianders.

"What's he doing?"
"I don't know, he just stands there." Both men are scrubbing and peeling potatoes for the communal kitchen of Skyhold, while they keep glaring at the prisoner holding his face towards the sun. "Maybe he just likes sunlight."
"Don't get much of sunlight down in the dungeon."
"Not sure about letting him run around out here." The man throws the potato in a tub of water and picks another from the basket. "That Kirkwall mage blew up a whole chantry."
The other man scoffs. "He's ain't hiding bombs under them robes."
"How would you know?"
"Shut up. The Commander wouldn't let him out here without checking."
Dorian lets his attention wander from the potato peelers to the mage and Commander in question. Cullen sits on a pile of planks, frowning at a paper in his hand. Dorian saunters over and clears his throat to draw his attention.
"What do you want, Dorian?" Cullen's voice carries the familiar tension of a blaring headache.
"Bad day, my dear Commander?"
"No."
The Kirkwall mage, Anders, steps out of the sun, closer to Cullen and him. He wipes a strain of hair from his face. The magic suppressing wristbands glitter for a second as the light hits them. "He has a headache and he doesn't want to see a healer for it."
The frown on Cullen's forehead seems to grow with every second. "I'm not letting you have your magic to heal me."
Dorian lets a purple drop of light run over the back of his hand. "Yes, yes, magic, so dangerous."
Anders giggles. A delightful sound that causes a smile to spread on Dorian's face, without his allowance.
"I don't need magic to set your neck," Anders says with a shrug.
Cullen looks up, wincing at the movement. "My neck?"
"You can't even turn your head right." Anders gestures at Cullen's posture. "Probably a pinched nerve at the back of your head and at your lower back. You're practically listing to the side. But what do I know, I'm just a healer."
"And you don't need magic to fix it?" For once, Cullen doesn't even frown.
"We just need a bench or something for you to lie down on. And I need Dorian too."
Dorian raises an eyebrow at Anders. "Many people think they need me, but I'm not so generous with my attention."
"Pff," Cullen snorts. "As if attention isn't the only thing of interest for you."
"Gentlemen," Anders says before they can snipe at each other. "I see a bench in the shade there, it would be perfect for this. Shall we?"
After some huffing, just for show, Dorian finds himself at the end of the bench, holding Cullen's ankle. "I have you known, my speciality is decidedly not healing."
Anders chuckles. "I'm aware. I assure you, we have no need for your speciality. At least I hope."
"What?" Cullen, flat on his stomach on the bench, struggles to get up.
"A joke, Commander," Anders says. "Relax." He shakes his head with a smile, blond hair brushing over the edges of his lips. When he leans forward, his hair swings like a curtain, hiding his eyes. He places his fingers on Cullen's back, the wristbands jingling, and feels along his spine through his shirt. Then he stops and presses hard. Cullen groans as Anders moves along his spine. "Now, pull on his leg, hard."
"If my parents could see me now," Dorian grumbles as he pulls.
A strange sound comes from Cullen and Anders lifts his hands. "There, you can stop pulling now."
Dorian shakes out his hands, a bit more dramatic than necessary. Anders grins at him as he helps Cullen to sit up and places his fingers at the back of Cullen's neck. "Turn your head, slowly."
There is a sound like gnashing teeth, loud enough for Dorian to hear, and Anders drops his hands. "There. Slow movements for the next half hour. Frankly, you should rest, but I doubt you're the kind of person who knows how to do that."
"How about you take a rest in your office," Dorian says. "And I will watch over Anders. I even promise to check his robes for explosives."
Cullen rolls his eyes. "No need for that. Just make sure that he stays inside these walls and doesn't have access to magic. And some people do not think favourably of him, so be careful where you're taking him." Cullen leaves with a nod, walking straight and easily, almost a swing in his steps.
"You've changed that man's life," Dorian says. But when he looks back at Anders, he doesn't see the expected smile on his face. "Are you alright?"
Anders lets out a bitter laugh. "No, I'm not alright. I had an exceptional amount of shit days, recently. I’m still fucked up from it all, and I don’t know when it'll get better."
Dorian thinks for a moment. "Come with me, I want to show you something." He walks towards the side of the castle that holds the camps of the Redcliffe mages. A few new barracks have been built since the last time he was here. The layout of this city inside the castle keeps changing, but Dorian soon finds the tent he is looking for.
"Merribella, are you there?" he calls outside of the tent flap.
"Is it that damn Altus again?" comes from the inside.
Dorian turns to Anders. "One of the few who actually remembers that it's Altus, not Magister." He shoves the tent flap to the side. "My dear, I have someone with me I'd like you to meet."
A large woman with a child on her arm and a face that shows the traces of long, harsh years, stands in the middle of her tent and frowns at him. "I'm not dealing with another tevinter peacock."
"He is most definitely not a peacock, tevinter or other." Dorian steps aside and gestures for Anders to come in. "This is my reluctant friend Merribella and this —" he steps to the side, "— is Anders of Kirkwall."
Merribella stares at Anders, her mouth hanging open, until her expression slowly turns into a smile. "Anders, the rebel mage."
Anders fidgets with his hands. "I'm not sure..."
"Not everyone hates you, you know?" Dorian says.
Merribella's eyes snap to him and understanding dawns on her face. She lifts the baby in her arm to show it to Anders. "This is my grandson." She looks at Anders. "His name is Anders. He is a free child of a mage and will grow up with his family."
Dorian will never admit how many tears he shed this afternoon, but the kohl around his eyes is unsalvageable by the time he brings Anders back to the castle.
"Thank you," Anders says quietly.
"Don't mention it." Dorian sighs. "I'm serious. Don't mention this to anybody, I have a reputation to uphold."
"Of course," Anders says and faster than Dorian can react, he presses a kiss to Dorian's cheek. "You're still beautiful, by the way," he whispers near Dorian's ear.
A guard takes Anders back to his cell. He looks over his shoulder at Dorian, smiling, glowing like a ray of sun, before the door closes behind him. For a long while, Dorian stands rooted to the spot.
"So," he says to himself. "This is that, then." His heart has no right to jump in his chest like this. No right at all.
