Spelled (Carlos de Vil x Sanderson Daughter)- Ch. 9: Exciting Exhibits
Tumblr media
Auradon Prep is… surprisingly easy to escape. No barriers, no guards, nothing. I could just walk out no problem and go home anytime I want! We follow a path through some trees until we come up to a giant stone building.
“So, here it is. The Museum of Cultural History. I’ve only seen a few exhibits because FG won’t let me go in there.”
“Why not?” Evies asks sympathetically.
I shrug. “Guess having magic powers means you’re basically on Auradon’s most-wanted list no matter how much you prove you’re a good witch.”
We walk up the stains through the giant pillars, and when we get to the door Mal starts asking Evie for directions. I notice she keeps looking at a hand mirror. A magic mirror, maybe?
“Remember: don’t get caught!”
I frown. “Couldn’t we just explain that we’re here for a night tour or something?”
Mal rolls her eyes. “What part of ‘evil gang’ don’t you get? We sneak, not waltz in asking for permission!”
They keep walking as she goes scrolling through her spellbook while I wander over to a coat rack. There’s an unclaimed black cloak hung on it, which gives me an idea.
I pick it up and run my fingers over it.
“Transform this cloak to crystal-clear, make the wearer disappear.”
The cloak shimmers for a second, but nothing happens. Oh, come on! I just practiced this on my jacket last week! I slip the garment over my shoulders and flip the hood on.
Just then Carlos walks into the room. “Mal made the guard prick his finger and fall asleep. Where’d you go?”
“I’m right here,” I state obviously.
He jumps like he’s seen a ghost. “Jeez! Where the heck are you?”
“Wait- you can’t see me?”
Carlos wildly shakes his head. “No! Did you jinx yourself or something?”
I lift the hood off my head, and Carlos’ face turns white.
“Dear God! Your head’s floating in the air! Did you get beheaded?”
Now a smile spreads over my face. “Oh good! The spell worked!” I remove the cloak, and Carlos still looks shocked.
“That’s so cool! You gotta use that more often!”
“I just learned how last week. I didn’t think it would work-”
“Guys! Hurry up!” Jay hisses from the doorway.
“Coming!” I tuck the cloak under my arm and follow Carlos to where the other VKs are looking: the surveillance room. The guard’s asleep, but the door’s still locked. However Mal seems to find a spell to open it, just as Jay says he’s going to break it down.
“Make it easy, make it quick. Open up without a kick!” Mal chants quickly as Jay rushes towards the door. The lock springs open just as he goes to kick it down, sending Jay flying to the ground.
“Let’s go!” Mal orders as she and Evie march ahead.
Carlos goes to help Jay up but the brutish VK just pushes him off.
“Just trying to help!” Carlos shrugs as he looks at me with an annoyed face.
I shrug back as we catch up with the others. “Thy is as stubborn as an ox, and will not accept the help from thy friends. And yet will only lead to one’s downfall is the denial of alliance.”
Evie gives me a blanked-out look. “What?”
“Oh. Um- on the voyage of life, the best boat is a friendship.” I try to explain as we hurry down the hall.
“Stop talking in riddles and tell us!” Jay says impatiently from the staircase.
“Friends are more important than pride, Jay!” I roll my eyes.
Turning a corner, we see a sign pointing upstairs that says Gallery of Villains.
“Up up up up up! Almost there!” Evie whispers excitedly.
At the top, we search the first room and fail to find an exhibit featuring all of the original villains, all in terrifying poses. Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar, and Cruella de Vil.
“I’ll never forget Mother’s Day again…” Carlos utters as he stares at his mother’s horrifying statue.
I must admit, the villains gallery doesn’t cease to disappoint. I wonder if…?
“Well… wand’s not here. Let’s bounce!” Jay says tightly as he starts heading out.
“Why are we looking for a wand?” I wonder out loud.
“It’s Fairy Godmother’s wand. We-” Mal stutters a bit. “We just wanted to see it because it’s such a famous artifact.”
Oh. I guess that’s normal?
I follow the others, but not before I take a quick glance behind to see Mal taking a longer look at Maleficent's statue. Guess I’m not the only one having family issues.
“Hey trixie! Ya coming or not?”
I groan and go running off towards Jay’s voice. “I’m going to kill you if you keep calling me that, Jay!”
“Good! Then you’ll be one your way to becoming more evil! C’mon guys, let’s keep looking.”
The others go on ahead to find the wand, while I keep looking for-
Oh. Found it.
After searching I turn a corner to check out the next room and find the terrible trio themselves: the Sanderson Sisters. Artifacts are placed around the room, such as Aunt Winnie’s broom, samples of all her different tonics, and a green brooch. The Sanderson exhibit is set to look like Salem in the 1600s with the infamous coven circled around a cauldron. Winifred, Mary, and-
“Mother?” I croak.
It is her. Sarah Sanderson. Tall, blonde, and beautiful, wearing her trademark pink corset, purple and red skirt, and deep violet cloak. It’s like looking in a mirror…
“There you are!”
I jump and turn around, clutching my chest. “Dear God, don’t sneak up on me like that, Evie!”
“She looks just like you!” Evie observes as she points at my mom’s statue. By now Jay and Carlos have joined us.
“Um, I guess-”
“No, she doesn’t.” Carlos shakes his head, then smiles. “She’s not nearly as pretty as you.”
Before I can deny his thoughtful compliment Jay walks up to the exhibit.
“So this is the supposedly dangerous Sanderson sisters? Look pretty harmless to me. Whacked, but harmless.”
“Try telling that to Binx,” I mutter.
“Hey, Magica! It’s your cat!” Evie points to a picture on the wall.
I nod. “Yes, that’s Binx. But he wasn’t always a cat. His name is Thackery Binx. He was human before Winifred cursed him to become a cat.”
“Is it true he can talk?”
“Yes, but he chooses not to sometimes. It’s not every day you meet a talking cat.”
Carlos shutters. “At least he’s not a dog and doesn’t rip you to shreds.”
Again with the dogs? “Carlos, are you-?”
“Um, where’s Mal?” Jay asks from up ahead.
“I’ll go find her!” Evie volunteers and goes off to fetch the purple-haired leader.
"Tell her I found the wand!" Jay goes sprinting ahead, leaving only me and Carlos.
I catch up and walk next to him. “Is your mother very strict?”
“Nah. She just likes to use me for chores and stuff. I still love her, but sometimes I wish she’d let me do what I want to do.”
“Oh. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t bother. At least I’m not an orphan, right? What’s it like to not know who your parents are?” He asks, a bit bashful I might add.
I bite my lip. “It’s… different. I try not to think about it too much. I don’t let my heritage define my future.” Not a complete lie.
“You know what?” Carlos puts a hand on my shoulder, which makes me tense a bit. “I like that. I think I’ll try to live by that.”
“Live by what?” Evie walks up with Mal.
“Magica says to not let your heritage define your future. I think that sounds nice.”
“Sounds like you’re betraying your mom,” Mal says with an unsure tone. “Keep focused guys! We’re here to find the wand!”
“And I found it!” Jay yells from down the hall.
We all rush over and join him in a large room full of numerous magical objects, and at the center resides the all-powerful wand of Fairy Godmother herself.
I get a closer look at the wand and see some magic flickering around it. “Wait a minute…”
Mal seems to get my drift and tries to warn Jay. “No Jay, don’t-!”
“It’s protected-!” I shout over her but it’s not in time to stop Jay from touching the barrier. He gets thrown back and a loud alarm begins to blare over the speakers.
“A forcefield and a siren?!” Carlos yells over the deafening noise.
“No doubt the guard’s awake!” Mal complains.
I scramble to the doorway and look to see the security guard already heading in our direction. “We have to go now!”
Quickly, we scurry in the opposite direction down another staircase. I can see the guard’s flashlight beam getting closer, so I slip on my invisible cloak. Carlos goes over towards a ringing phone and gives a made-up excuse for the triggered alarm.
“Say ‘hi’ to Mrs.!” He sets it down.
“Carlos!” Mal hisses.
He rolls his eyes. “You’re welcome!”
When we make it outside and go to hide in some bushes I start ranting at Jay.
“What in the blazes did thy think thou was doing?! Fairy Godmother’s wand is a display, not a toy! One might think thou were trying to steal it!” The VKs all avoid my gaze and some fidget with their hands.
"Um, Magica? Where are you?" Jay asks out loud.
"Oh, right." I hastily rip off my cloak, only to give each VK a warning glare. “I won’t say anything this time, but if you try something like this again I’m going to have to report to Ben.”
Now Mal gives an annoyed sigh. “Really? Going to tattle to Ben, are we? I thought you were into pranks.”
“I’m into pranks, not stealing! There’s a fine line I draw, and I don’t cross it. So either try to do better, or suffer through an extra goodness class!” I pivot and start strutting back to the school, while the others follow from behind.
“Way to go, Jay! Now we have to go to school tomorrow!” Mal complains as we head back.
“It’s not so bad,” I try to sound positive. “Just avoid talking to anyone.”
“Says the one trying to uplift school,” Evie groans as she checks her mirror again.
“Hey, I just try to be good. That doesn’t mean I’m a saint.”

Cruella De Vil x Lesbian!Reader || Drabble
Tumblr media
Plot: Cruella selects you to go with her to Paris for Fashion Week over Alonzo. (*cough* Devil wears Prada AU)
Warnings: Boss/Employee relationship (Well, intentions for one) and Cruella being a liiiitle horny.
It takes you a moment for the information to settle in your brain, but oh when it does- you have a million trillion questions bubbling up into your mouth. They’re on the tip of your tongue! "... - I'm sorry- Ms De Vil!- " You start, but find that once you’ve come back down to reality- Cruella has already moved on, leaving you and poor Alonzo by her Panther; Rain spitting on the bonnet, his head, and your hood. "Oh, hell."
Sighing, you pull the hood of your coat more securely over your head in determination- and rush obediently after her, weaving between the other people on their commutes to work, the pigeons bouncing around for scraps, and street performers that stand between where Cruella parks her car and the building you work in with her.
Quickly you catch up to her, which is a feat you've spent probably too-much-time training for and learning how to do, admittedly - a feat Alonzo is still a grade or two behind in, as he struggles in the crowds behind you, -. Clutching the strap of your oh so precious bag full of work stuff tight, you struggle to catch your breath. "Um- Cruella! I- I'm sorry, you want me to go with you for Fashion week? For Paris??"
Alonzo may not be as competent as you but he has been with Cruella far longer- he's done this before! He knows the in’s-and-out’s of Fashion Week and you just... don't. You really don't. You would genuinely be like a fish out of water. The whole idea is concerning, to you. He should go, instead! Surely Cruella realises this-
"That's what I said! Keep up, Lovely, you know I don't relish repeating myself." She reaches the door first, of course, and the door man - Patrick, who you smile at as you pass and who tips his cute little uniform hat back at you, - opens it wide for the both of you. Alonzo only just manages to slip in before the door clips him on the backside.
"Yes... yeah, I know.” Then you take a deep breath, and you continue- “But see, I don't think I can- "
"You don't think you can what, dear?" Cruella suddenly stops, right by the front desk. You manage to halt as well, just in time so that you don’t run directly into her- but just like Alonzo and the front door, you still get a face full of fur when she whips round; Her polar bear coat brushing your nose and threatening to make you sneeze. As you look up at her still, fighting back the violent bodily response to fur up the nose, she gives you a stern look back as your co-worker finally catches up to the two of you, finding his spot at your side.
Black painted talons rest at her hip as Cruella stares down at you, raising her perfect brows- waiting impatiently for you to respond.
As always, you feel half intimidated by her looking at you and half aroused. It has made for an interesting job experience- but not a bad one. You're a helpless lesbian… not a useless one, and that's why Cruella already favours you.
More then you realise.
"... Well... Paris. I just don't think I'm ready." You insist, adjusting the strap of your bag on your shoulder, uncomfortable under her heavy, disorienting gaze. "Alonzo is great!- "
Good grief, the sheer exasperation and disgust painted across her face as she deeply rolls those terrifying eyes, is almost overwhelming. "Ugh. Alonzo, is an imbecile."
You gape, looking between her and Alonzo, whose only reaction to this, is to look pathetically at the ground for a moment. You put a hand to his arm, to comfort him, but Cruella clicks her fingers in front of your face to steal your attention back. Your response is an immediate one, blinking and surprised. Oh- Goodness- Yes?
"... Darling," Cruella's shoulders drop once your attention is on her again, performing for you. She makes a frowny face with her mouth and her eyes as a talon-like nail now coming up to the soft skin underneath your chin; Guiding you to crane your neck as you look up at her. She opens her mouth to speak, before her eyes and face snap a few inches to the side and land sharply, on Alonzo. "Go fetch me a coffee." She spits, not taking her hand away from you at all, so you just stand there quite still and straighter than necessary, trying not to breath too heavily. "Now."
Alonzo takes off like that coffee is a glass of water and he's just recently been air lifted from a desert- where he's been dying for the last 12 hours. You genuinely feel a gust of wind actually blow at you as he rushes off, like in the cartoons. Wow, you think in surprise.
But then it’s just you and Cruella in the foyer, so your attention isn’t on your co-worker for long. Other people are around, of course, but no one questions Cruella. If she doesn't speak to them first, they'll avoid her like the plague- and if she wants to stand in the middle of the crowded foyer, then they’ll simply give her space.
Its really quite impressive.
"Now, Y/N," She uses your name and it sounds like a threat off her tongue. You feel small in front of her, and wait with bated breath for her next words, watching her face transform back into one of abject, fake sadness. Like one of those over-the-top mask’s used in old theatre plays. "... Darling. I need you there... Fashion week is a very stressful time for me," Her voice transforms into something sickly sweet, talking to you like you're simple... but at the same time, treasured. "And I will require my favourite person to be there with me and relieve any tension I might develop... okay?"
"... Right. But Cruella, I don't really know how I'd do that- "
The nail scrapes off of you, leaving a trail of tingles behind on your skin. She winks. "Oh I think you'll figure it out."
Then she turns around and heads off again like the tropical storm of a woman she is, to work.
And you're expected to follow her- which you do.

2, 3, 7 and 8 for the ask meme! :)
2. Who is your favorite staff member(s)? My favorite staff member is Crewel. For a multitude of reasons, but I do really love his character as a whole. I love that he is based on Cruella De Vil. I love his split dyed hair. His aesthetic. His demeanor. How he speaks. How he breathes. I'll stop.
3. Who is your favorite non-NRC character(s)? Rollo Flamm. Hands down. And I don't wanna hear anyone say anything about his stupid bangs, I LIKE HIS BANGS. I like characters that would never give me the time of day and I would probably drive insane, but that is the fun part.
7. What is your favorite chapter? I will have to look and see lol. I am not done with Book 6 (literally sitting on ch 7 of it HAHAHA). I don't know if I have a favorite, but I do have two that stick out in my memory- life changing honestly. The chapter where Trey falls down the stairs, and it's because of these texts I sent talking about "RUGGIE NAURRR NOT TREY, HOW IS HE SUPPOSED TO HELP HIS FAMILY AT THE BAKERY".
And then I would say the chapter at the end of book 2 where Jack turns into his wolf form. I remember playing it at work and I had my phone on the counter and I saw Jack, still in human form, looked up and was talking to someone, and when I looked back down there was a big white wolf. I had no clue what just happened, I was so lost. I didn't know what to say. And my irl friend was just "yeah he does that" xD
8. What is your favorite ship(s)? Personally, I don't ship any of the boys together. None of the staff together. None of them date each other in my brain. As a friend ship- my favorite would be either Adeuce or Ruggie/Floyd. Adeuce for obvious reasons with dumb and dumber (Ace is dumber). Ruggie and Floyd I think would be a wild pair of friends- almost terrifying if you think about it long enough, but I think they both would have a lot of fun together, even if it brought chaos to everyone around them.

So. Elephant in the room. It’s important to note that the Cruella movie (the center point of my portrayal), the animal cruelty thing that she is known for is actually canonically changed. And likely something I am going to stick to. And that is the fact that, Cruella actually loves dogs, and the animal cruelty charge is just a media accusation done to bring down and tarnish her image. (likely something the Baroness utilizes in any upcoming prequel).
What I will keep from the original movies is the psychotic break that Cruella ends up suffering, and the grounds for this is seen in move where she sees her personality as two separate identities and rejects the one that seems to bear all of her humanity. Perhaps even the shut down of puppy mills that lands 85 Dalmatian puppies at her home but I will do verse details later on that because I imagine the baroness would use that to twist the image with what influence she has left. Anyhow~
No real dog fur coats found here, nor attempts to make them. Cruella might just let people think that to play mind games with the Baroness but the media is what the media is. And plus Cruella really enjoys the idea that she is seen as a villain, because guess what - she is one, but she draws the line at puppy murder.

OUAT - Rumpelstiltskin + Cruella & Black Fairy
@barpurplewrites asked: Relativity Issues: 'Ella' and 'Delilah' did you give Rumpelstiltskin advice on what to get Belle for Valentine's Day?
WITH A BIT OF HELP FROM MY.... MOMS (Ao3)
The door made no sound as it opened. Neither did the bell above it announce their presence. Rumpelstiltskin still felt a chill at the back of his neck, but was too late to whisk himself away before the two sweet-scented nightmares had spotted him.
Worse. They took a look at the small package in his hand and gave identical grimaces.
“That’s horrible,” said one, shaking her head in disappointment.
The other sighed, deigning to put her cigarette holder down enough to tell him, “It’s like you still know nothing of women, darling. How can you know so little, when you’ve had us around?”
Rumpelstiltskin grit his teeth. Tried to magic Belle’s gift back onto a shelf in the back room, and scowled when he discovered that his godmother’s power had already locked it against the effects of magic.
He settled for placing it on the counter. “Hello, mother.” He nodded at one, then the other. “Godmother.” He glared at the two intruders, but still kept his tone smooth and polite. Ella, he could have chewed out and thrown back to the street, though he’d get a mighty earful for it; but his godmother was a dangerous creature when displeased, and it was best to treat her with the utmost consideration unless the payoff of facing her wrath was worth the risk. “What brings such lovely ladies to Storybrooke... so soon after you declared it a stifling, boring town and announced your visit was over?”
Ella lifted a corner of her lips at his words. “Soon? Why, it must have been a month at the least!”
More like three. But since he had often spent three years - and even three decades! - without seeing either of them in the flesh, Rumpelstiltskin had a feeling that this would be far from the last time his quiet life was invaded.
In the past, he had always cleared away from anything that might arouse their curiosity. His main interest was to live as a regular man, and to his great fortune the mere thought of such a ‘base’ ideal bored the two women to tears.
However, this time he had dared to dream bigger. A fool’s dream at the start, to pay special attention to the lovely, young librarian who kept smiling and making easy conversation with him despite their disastrous first meeting. Miss French - or rather, Belle, as he was privileged to call her now - had returned his interest.
His birth mother and godmother had found out, and descended on Storybrooke for a personal inspection of the woman who - in their words - had dug a tunnel underneath his walls, settled inside and merrily planted a flag bearing her name in his heart.
Rumpelstiltskin had loathed the meddling, but he’d secretly prayed that their assumptions were correct.
They were.
He and Belle had now been a couple for half a year. Today, February 14th, marked not only the worldwide holiday of lovers, but also the half-year anniversary of their first date.
Until his birth mother and godmother had arrived, Rumpelstiltskin had honestly believed he could make of the day a perfect memory for Belle.
Now he could only hope his plans wouldn’t be ruined beyond bearing.
“Well. If we are qualifying the sectors of this numbing world, then that awful place Ella dragged me to was by far the worst,” the Black Fairy exclaimed. “At least here there’s a decent forest where to retire in the afternoons.”
Ella sniffed. “I told you I’d take you to Central Park, you stubborn cow.” She flicked off the ashes at the tip of her cigarette with an irritated tap of her finger. Then she turned to Rumpelstiltskin with what amounted to a pleading expression. “Who could possibly hate New York?” she asked, honestly puzzled.
Instead of siding with his godmother, which was his instinct, Rumpelstiltskin shrugged. Choosing one of the women’s opinion over the other had never been safe. invariably they would reconcile and reach some compromise, and then he would look like a divisive jerk.
He faked aloofness. “So that’s why you came to Storybrooke?”
Ella made a noise between laughter and derision. “It was her idea,” she was quick to inform him.
Rumpelstiltskin hadn’t doubted it from the moment his godmother had hinted at her need to be surrounded by nature. While the myth of iron harming the fae had no basis in real life, their kind had no admiration for big cities where people ran too fast and busy to get entangled into their little schemes, and where a single robust tree was more rare than a free parking spot.
It wasn’t a question of survival, but of preference. However, after so many centuries alive, Rumpelstiltskin could see how they could meld into one. “And i’m delighted by your visit,” he assured them, still the epitome of manners, “I’m sure we can catch up and play a few rounds of the happy family, but in the meanwhile, I’m afraid I have plans already.”
His feet froze on the floor - Rumpelstiltskin glanced down and realized he was literally frozen.“ His gaze would have scorched a human being, but his godmother only stared back. “Fine,” he growled, directing his magic to free his limbs. “What is it you want?”
“Why, darling,” Ella said. “To make sure you don’t bungle such a special date with your lady love.”
“A sweet child,” his godmother agreed, then reached out and summoned the small, beribboned box Rumpelstiltskin had just put down. She gave a delicate sniff of disappointment. “Surely she rates more to you than this... this...” She shook her head, giving up on an appropriate description.
Ella picked up where her oldest friend left it, giving the box a disgusted look. “It’s trite, darling,” she told Rumpelstiltskin reproachingly. “Chocolates are an adequate offer on a regular day, since I remember that darling girl mentioned she likes the stuff, but on a special date?”
Rumpelstiltskin knew the look in their eyes.
Immortal they might be, but his birth mother and godmother were, as most females, the most stubborn people when they stumbled upon a subject that interested them.
In this case, his love life.
“Fine,” Rumpelstiltskin capitulated, though he snatched his gift from his godmother’s grasp and tucked it under his arm. “What do you suggest?”
The two women smiled.
Rumpelstiltskin resigned himself to whatever over-the-top, unnecessarily ostentatious spectacle they would concoct together. Belle would understand, His girlfriend might not be privy to the true nature of her dear new friends, but she already knew they were unstoppable.
After the fireworks - please, gods, let them stop at fireworks! - Rumpelstiltskin still planned to find a moment before midnight to present Belle with the little box he was protecting with his own body now... and wait for her decision once she found the golden solitaire he had tucked among the sweets.
The End 28/02/17

PSA: @ the Descendants fandom
It’s so... hard to ship Jane and Carlos. I mean, I was so excited after seeing the movie, because I had no idea that they’d become a thing. And I was so happy! I love them together. But then....
Then I go in the Janelos tag and it’s 89% Janelos hate.
And it hurts??? Because I genuinely love them together. I’m not queer baiting or anything; I haven’t found a chemistry that I liked in either J.aylos and B.enlos. I mean, I totally get why people love both ships: they are ADORABLE.
But there’s something about Janelos that appeals to me and has appealed ever since the first movie.
I don’t expect you to like Janelos. Seriously, I don’t!
But please... Please don’t flood my ship’s tag with hate.

The Heart Will Follow (Ch. 3)
Jay’s never had a crush...until he met Carlos. And now he can’t stay away.
Carlos doesn’t know what to make of Jay’s presence, yet. But what should he do, exactly, about a boy that’s both cute AND terrifying?
A collection of Jaylos isle meetings, inspired by this beautiful headcanon I came across randomly that I can’t get out of my head.
AO3
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3: Forever In Your Mind
“So...he just...left?”
Carlos bites his lip and lets his gaze drop to his lap. He’ll look anywhere to avoid Evie’s concentrated stare right now. He can hear the concern in her voice, but it feels too new, too...unsettling, to have someone care about his safety. He’s just not used to that. At all.
“I wonder why...” he hears Evie mutter to herself, and he looks up to catch sight of her furrowed brow and lips pursed tightly in thought. When she glances up and sees Carlos watching her, her eyes immediately soften, and she places a hand over his, flashing a warm smile to try to reassure him.
“Jay is so weird sometimes,” she muses, shaking her head. “Who knows why he was out there. The important thing is, he left you alone. Right?”
“I guess,” Carlos agrees, heaving a sigh. He decides against telling Evie exactly why Jay said he had chosen to leave him alone. He couldn’t really explain what Jay had said, honestly. Why would he give a shit about how Carlos’ mom would react? And his...eyes? Yeah, he definitely didn’t need to upset Evie any further with more of Jay’s weird comments.
“I-I didn’t get the impression that he’d try to steal from me again,” he offers, and quirks a smile when Evie beams back at him.
“Good! So let’s not waste another second then talking about that...that skeezy thief,” she huffs, and shifts her focus back to her open textbook. She flips through a few pages before noticing how Carlos has stilled, and is now sitting stiff and unmoving beside her. There’s a look of distress on his face, and his cheeks are blooming the brightest pink color.
“Ok. Something else is wrong. What is it?” Evie demands, and Carlos squeaks quietly at the forcefulness in her tone. He’s biting his tongue, but Evie can see the way his eyes are continuously darting to the door and back.
“No! Carlos, tell me you don’t. You don’t need to...” She pinches her nose, sighing in frustration at the way Carlos shifts in his seat, his hands pressed firmly into his lap. “You didn’t go before class started??”
“I-I’m sorry. I didn’t have to! I swear. It...it just came up all of a sudden.”
Carlos can feel the guilt pooling in his gut already. He didn’t want to ignore all the help Evie had given him, all the advice that she had gathered to survive Dragon Hall.
Initially, Carlos had no regrets about the cup of coffee he drank this morning. More like the exact opposite - he was grateful.
Cruella had thrown a full mug at his head as he was trying to leave for school, which wasn’t unusual. Even though she had agreed to let him attend classes in exchange for extra chores after school and on the weekends, his departure every morning was a painful reminder to her of the chores that wouldn’t get done until later, including her breakfast dishes.
What WAS unusual about this morning, however, was that Carlos had managed to catch the mug this time without barely a spill of the scalding tar black coffee that it contained. With his mother already stomping out of the room in a fit of angry rambles to no one but herself, Carlos had taken full advantage of the hot liquid, flooding his belly and providing some satiation and warmth against the chill of the morning air.
It wasn’t until now, when the drink had caught up to his system, did the heeding of Evie’s number one warning cause him a tinge of remorse.
“Y-you’re going to have to hold it Carlos!” Evie hissed, her voice shrill with fear. “I wasn’t lying when I said that leaving class ALONE is a suicide mission!”
Carlos tries his best to settle his squirming. He crosses his ankles tightly, keeping his hands pressed firmly down to help ignore the feeling building inside. But the pressure is just too intense to ignore. He looks up at Evie just as the tears start to well in his eyes.
“Shit, FINE,” she groans, smacking her hand to her forehead. “Listen to me, ok? If you’re going to do this, there’s only one way to go.”
-----
Carlos shuffles quickly down the hall, trying his best to be quiet. Evie’s directions were very specific, and he plans to follow them perfectly. The little pangs of regret he feels for upsetting his new friend, his only friend, are still fresh, and he has no intention of hurting her like that again. Not after all she’s done for Carlos already.
“Take a right - you’ll walk past three classrooms and a bathroom. Walk past the bathroom. Do NOT use that one, Carlos. Ok? Keep walking. Promise me you’ll keep walking.”
He squeezes his eyes closed and scoots past the bathroom as promised, despite his borderline painful need to go right now. He’s not going to make it much longer, and he starts looking around at all the isolated doorways, contemplating the option of relieving himself there if he can’t manage to find the very specific bathroom Evie told him he absolutely had to use.
Luckily, he spots it just a few feet away on the other side of the hallway, exactly where Evie said it would be. He breathes a short sigh of relief as he darts across and slips through the door.
At first glance, the bathroom looks and sounds empty. But he knows better than to trust his senses completely. So Carlos takes a quick scan of each corner and stall to confirm that he is, indeed, alone before sliding into the last stall closest to the window and locking the door behind him.
Carlos completely forgets the world around him then, lost in the exhiliration of finally being able to relieve himself. He’s had to pee for so long he can’t even stop the happy groan that escapes his lips, the pressure inside immediately gone in that blissful moment. He’s so focused on that pleasant feeling that he almost...almost...doesn’t hear the soft creaking of the bathroom door opening.
It’s a slow sound, just barely audible, but he manages to catch it anyway, the years of constant need to remain alert and attentive now on his side. He  sucks in his breath and forces himself to stop his stream, wincing in pain at the involuntary pause. He hops onto the toilet seat ledge nimbly and balances there, remaning motionless, quiet, and with his ears piqued to listen.
The door closes with a soft scrape along the damaged linoleum floor, followed closely by the pad of slow, deliberate footsteps. They pause for a moment at each stall as they move along, clearly looking for something. Or someone.
When they make a stop in front of Carlos’ stall, his muscles tense uncomfortably to make himself be as still as possible. He squeezes his eyes shut and silently wishes for whoever’s on the other side to leave him alone.
But instead, the feet step closer to him, and he hears a dry chuckle.
“Come out, come out wherever you are!” Jay sing-songs. “I know you’re in there, De Vil.”
Evil, poor Evie’s going to hate him for this.
Carlos lets out a breath and drops to the ground with a loud stomp. No point in being quiet now is there?
“Fine, fine! You caught me, ok? Just, let me finish pissing and I’ll come out. I’m almost done.”
“Aw, I interrupted your pee pee break??” Jay teases. “Sorry, pup! By all means, continue.”
Carlos rolls his eyes as he turns back to the toilet. Word travels fast at this school, and his mother’s transgressions were the talk of Dragon Hall within a day of his arrival. The puppy jokes and nicknames that have already started are beyond annoying, but there’s not much he can do about it.
He’s focused on finishing now, trying to hurry himself so Jay doesn’t have time to entertain the idea of breaking in the stall. But only a second later he can hear the lock jostling, making him jump a little and drop his aim. He curses at the pee trickling on his feet, shaking off and hurriedly tucking himself in just as Jay frees the latch and pushes the door open.
Carlos is met with a wicked smirk, which Jay immediately drops to a frown when he spots Carlos fumbling the button of his shorts closed.
“Boo, you’re no fun,” he mumbles, sauntering closer. Carlos stumbles back, slamming the backs of his knees into the porcelain bowl of the toilet and causing him to arch awkwardly. He turns his body and catches himself on the tank before he can fall farther, taking the opportunity to flick the handle and flush before he launches himself back.
“Hey there!” Jay snorts, grabbing Carlos around the waist and pulling him close when Carlos’ body lands against him. The boy is quick to twist and squirm, freeing himself from the thief and lunging for the door. Jay is faster though, and slams the stall shut with one hand before Carlos can escape.
“Come now, C, did I say it was time for us to leave??” Jay tuts. Carlos presses his face against the stall door, biting his lip hard to avoid a snappy retort. He’s at Jay’s mercy in this stall, and doubts he’ll be a fair match against the boy’s muscles, rippling obviously from the cutoff sleeves of his vest.
A surprisingly gentle hand cups under Carlos’ chin, guiding his face away from the door. Reluctantly, he follows it, until his body is turned and fully facing Jay. His face is tipped upward to meet Jay’s smile, which seems less menacing but somehow still cocky and triumphant. Carlos can’t fight the sneer on his own lips, which only prompts more laughter from Jay.
“Ohhh, someone’s a little fiery, huh De Vil? You’ve got some balls, considering you’re the one invading my bathroom without my permission.”
Carlos perks a brow, glaring questioningly at the brunette. “Your bathroom? I-I ...really? Ev-I mean, nobody, told me that.”
Jay shakes his head at that, and releases his grip on Carlos’ chin, letting his fingers drop to tease along his jawline instead. Carlos holds his breath at the gentle sensation, pushing himself into the door with enough force that he can feel the latch digging into his back. It’s painful, but if it’s the only way to spare some space between him and Jay, he’ll take what he can get.
“Guess that’s lesson one then, pup,” Jay taunts, fingers still lightly caressing Carlos’ face. “The halls are mine when class is in session. You got that?” Carlos musters a short nod. “Good. And that includes any place there’s not a teacher. You need to use the bathroom? Grab stuff from a storage closet? Or even just hide out in there, you gotta pay the toll.”
“T-toll?”
Jay still feels too close, so Carlos tries to shift back more, which only produces a sharp pain when the latch scrapes him harshly again. He’s grateful for the distraction, though, when Jay dips in closer and grins wide.
“Yep. Everyone’s gotta pay up. No exceptions.”
Carlos stares at Jay for a moment, but feels uneasy when the boy is more than happy to stare back at him, their noses close and practically touching. He swallows thickly then, letting his gaze fall to the floor between them as he carefully sorts his words.
“I-I...but...Jay. Y-you know. I already told...” he looks up for a second and catches a glance at Jay’s now audacious smirk. And that makes him seethe.
“You know I don’t have anything,” Carlos states flatly, feeling a new surge of confidence. “I already told you. My mom’s a bitch, I barely get food and clothes. You think I have shit to spare for you?”
He shrinks back after his bold outburst, waiting for Jay’s response. But the thief doesn’t move, and his smirk doesn’t fade. He does take a generous step back though, allowing almost an arm’s length between him and Carlos. Carlos relaxes slightly at that, breathing a soft sigh of relief when he’s able to free his back from the painful latch. But even with the space between them now, Jay’s eyes never leave his. Carlos hasn’t even seen him blink! And the lingering stare is making him shiver.
“Well, not all tolls have to be cash and stuff, do they?” Jay retorts, licking his lips a little. “I’ve accepted, other...forms of payment. But you know that, don’t you? Smart guy like you. I know you’ve heard the rumors.”
Carlos swallows again, his mouth feeling horribly dry all of a sudden. He has heard the rumors. How could he not? Jay and Mal are the big bads of the school. There’s plenty of stories being passed around by everyone, mostly pointing out the best ways to avoid bodily harm at the hands of the two of them. And while he has heard that both are mostly appeased by money or things to hock for money, the entire student body is also aware of Jay’s willingness to trade, physical pleasures, as well. Though Evie had made it clear that it’s usually girls that makes those kind of offers, the kind that Jay is happy to accept, Carlos can’t help but wonder if that’s what Jay’s implying right now. Because the way he looks at him, and the constant lazy scans of his eyes up and down Carlos’ body, are giving him pause.
Can Jay be asking for that? From Carlos? That seems...impossible.
But then Jay leans back in, bracing an arm above Carlos with a brow cocked and a suggestive curl to his lips, and Carlos thinks it might actually be entirely possible.
“I think you know what I’m thinking.” Jay interrupts Carlos’ thoughts with a waggle of his eyebrows. “Up to you, pup. You barged into my bathroom and used my stall. Now, how are you going to make that up to me, hm?”
Carlos chews on his lip, refusing to dare a look at Jay. He’s not sure what to say if he did, so he keeps his eyes trained on his fingers, tangling and untangling them together while he thinks.
Fuck, he really should have listened to Evie.
Both boys are distracted then by the slam! of the bathroom door and irritably loud clacks across the linoleum.
“Carlos?? Are you in here??”
Evie! Carlos bites back a smile.
“Ev-mmph!”
A hand claps over his mouth, with Jay’s eyes wide and glaring at him. Carlos squirms, twisting away from Jay’s hand and wriggling along the stall door in the process. Then they hear an audible sigh, followed by a few slower clicks forward.
“Carlos, I know you’re in there.”
He wants to answer, but Jay keeps his hand in place, putting a finger to his own lips to silence Carlos.
“Jay, I know you’re in there, too.”
Jay grits his teeth and rolls his eyes as Evie raps harshly on the door.
“Come on, boys. Do you think I can’t see your feet? Stop wasting my time and open up.”
Jay grumbles, dropping his hand from Carlos’ mouth and giving him the chance to scurry away from the door. Jay tries to reach for him again but Carlos slides back quickly, jamming himself behind the toilet and against the cement wall to avoid Jay’s grasp.
“Well fuck,” Jay grunts, giving Carlos a frustrated glare. At that moment they here the latch click, and Jay steps back just in time to avoid the door swinging open.
“Boys,” Evie scolds, her eyes stern as they dart between Jay and Carlos, before finally settling on the dark haired boy in front of her.
“And what do you think you’re doing, Jay?” she scolds, crossing her arms as she glares coldly at him. “You know you don’t belong in here.”
“Calm down, Blue,” Jay snickers. “You know damn well I go wherever I want. Besides, you’re the one in the men’s room, aren’t you? Last time I checked, you weren’t properly...equipped, to come in here.”
He glares back at her, a proud smirk splayed on his lips. But Evie doesn’t falter, stepping forward instead and marching her way slowly towards the other boy in the corner.
“As if I’d ever want to use a men’s room anyway,” she snaps back, reaching a hand towards Carlos, He grabs it, intertwining their fingers with a relieved smile. Evie flashes a grin his way before returning to Jay with a disgusted sneer.
“And you’ve never seen what I’m equipped with, so don’t you dare try to go around talking about me like I would actually stoop to being one of your little fucktoys.”
She gives Carlos a gentle tug and he springs quickly away from the wall, following Evie’s lead to stand behind her, placing her between him and Jay.
“This bathroom is neutral territory and you know it.” Evie grits, leaning into Jay’s face. “You’re this close to doing your own chemistry homework,” she threatens with a pinch of her fingers. “I bet Jafar wouldn’t be too keen on you getting kicked out of school and losing all your marks here.”
Jay scoffs and looks away, but stays silent. Evie breaks into a smug grin, shoving Jay lightly in the chest. “So, Carlos and I are going to leave now, and you can find another form of payment elsewhere. Got it?”
She whips away before Jay can respond and struts out of the stall, dragging Carlos along behind her. They manage to reach the door before Jay stomps out after them.
“Hey! You wanna be a little bitch then we could just re-nig on our deal! What do you think of that? Just leave you to the fucking wolves at this school. Puppy, too,” he adds with a nod to Carlos. “You’ll get beat so bad the first week you’ll be begging for us again!”
Evie’s gaze softens, and she looks at Jay with a bit of pity before turning back to Carlos.
“Sweetie, go right out the door and wait for me, ok?” Evie asks gently, but Carlos’ brow is furrowed, and he looks confused.
“But-”
“Carlos, please? I’ll be right out. We just need to...talk. It’ll just take a minute.”
Carlos watches her for a moment, searching her face. She smiles brightly at him, and he finally nods and walks out into the hall and leaves them alone.
Evie gives an exasperated sigh. “Look,” she starts, and she reachs for Jay’s hand to give it a squeeze. His eyes widen in surprise at the gesture. “I’m going to let this slide, ok? I just...don’t think you’re thinking straight right now.”
Jay throws a heated glare at Evie as her lips twitch into a smirk. “You don’t think you’re being subtle, do you?” she chuckles, shaking her head. “Carlos may not see what’s going on, but he’s the only one that’s clueless, Jay.”
She drops his hand and takes a step back, reaching for the door handle. “He’s my friend,” she whispers, just loud enough for Jay to hear. “And I’m going to protect him, so just...don’t do anything you might regret.”
Evie pulls the door open slightly and moves to leave, but pauses when she hears Jay snickering behind her.
“What, is that supposed to be some kind of threat?”
She glances up through the doorway and catches a glimpse of Carlos just outside. His eyes are wide with curiosity and worry, and Evie can’t stop herself from smiling.
“Take it however you want, Jay,” she quips over her shoulder. “I was only trying to give you some friendly advice.”
“We’re not friends,” he hisses through his teeth.
"Maybe we’re not,” Evie replies coldly, “But we’re not enemies, are we? Unless you want to change that? You know where to find me if you do,” she teases with a wiggle of her fingers.
“Bye for now, Jay-Jay.”
Evie giggles to herself as she walks out of the bathroom, ignoring the muffled roars coming from behind the now closed door and looping her arm through Carlos’ to pull him along.
“We can study at my house tonight, ok? I just need to see about fixing one little problem and then we can get going.”

Spelled (Carlos de Vil x Sanderson Daughter) Ch. 18: Broken
Tumblr media
Carlos’ POV
Magica’s trying hard to understand, she really is. And I really like that. Most of the others around here couldn’t care less about us, yet she acts as if she’s a villain kid herself sometimes. After she leaves me to go talk to Ben I go find the others in Mal and Evie’s dorm, with everyone looking a bit uneasy and jumpy.
“Um, hey guys.” I wave awkwardly. No one says anything, and Dude answers by licking my nose. “Huh, you’re right, buddy. No one’s happy.”
“Nice family reunion, huh?” Jay chortles darkly. “Not exactly the warm, friendly greeting I was expecting.”
“It’s because we’ve been stuck in this candyland of niceness. They’re our parents, Jay. On the Isle? The one with all the wicked evil and all that? We- we can’t lose sight of what’s important.” Mal seems distant but tries to cover up what’s wrong by turning away to look at her spellbook.
“You want to break Ben’s love spell?” Evie asks when she reads the page Mal’s looking at.
“You’re gonna break the spell?” I panic and nearly drop Dude. “But that means… that means Magica won’t like me anymore!”
Mal shrugs and avoids my gaze. “I just thought keeping Ben under the spell would be a little… mean.”
“You’re the daughter of Maleficent. Since when do you care about being mean?” I rage.
“And you’re the son of Cruella de Vil, yet you’re still hanging around with that goody-goody!”
My hands are in fists, and I’m shaking in a silent rage that threatens to burst.
“Mal, you don’t understand. I’ve found a girl who makes me feel- happy! And she doesn’t care that I’m a VK! I’m not just going to let you ruin my only chance with her just because you suddenly feel guilty.”
“God, Carlos! She already knows about the love spell!” Mal drones in a whiney voice like it’s obvious. “She obviously did something to make it wear off and figured we originally had it planned for Ben.”
I do a double-take. Is she right? How does Mal know the spell wore off? She’s acted as though she loves me, how could she fake it? That would’ve been cruel for her standards, so… Has she really loved me all this time?
“Wait- so everything she’s done, everything she’s said up to this point has been the truth, no spell at all?”
Evie’s sadness melts away and she comes over to take my hand. “Yes, Carlos. Before Ben came to get Mal for their date she warned us not to harm him, along with saying she knew about the love spell. We don’t know how she broke free, but until yesterday afternoon she’s been acting on her own accord. Magica really does love you.”
The hidden forest. Everything she showed me, everything she said… was all because she trusts me. She loves me.
I stagger back a bit and go to sit on the couch, ignoring Jay’s teasing smirk.
“This is a puzzle, huh guys?” I try to lighten the mood and hope someone offers some help, but only Dude tries to help by jumping up to sit on my lap.
“Yeah, and now Magica’s got an edge on us. For all we know she’s probably spilling her guts out to Ben right now!” Mal spurts as she waves her arms frantically.
I shake my head, still staring at the ground while I pet Dude. “I don't think she’ll tell. She would’ve said something earlier to Fairy Godmother, and as long as Magica thinks we won’t hurt Ben then she won’t say anything.”
Evie tries to stay calm and takes a deep breath. “Let’s just get through this stupid family day without the whole operation turning into an exploding powder keg. We can’t afford any more mistakes. Our parents are counting on us.”
“I’m not sure I like that,” Jay comments from across the room. “After seeing how different Auradon is from the Isle, are we still on board with this? This whole… betraying and stealing routine?”
Mal scoffs. “This coming from Jafar’s son? I thought backstabbing and stealing was your hobby.”
Jay gets up to argue but I block him with my arm, while Evie stands in the center of the room with a stern look.
“Everybody be quiet! Listen to us! We can all agree that being brought here has changed us, and we’ve all found something or someone that’s made our lives brighter. But Mal’s right. We can’t lose focus of what’s important.” She pauses and looks outside at the darkening sunset. “Right now we’ve got to get through tomorrow, so let’s all just go to bed and get a good night’s sleep. We’ll regroup in the morning.”
I wish it weren’t true, but I’m more scared of my mother than the authorities here. I just wish Magica didn’t have to come between the middle. But I will draw the line with Dude. No one’s going to make a coat out of him, no matter how much mom wants to.
Mal walks to the door and holds it open, indicating she wants us out with no further discussion.
Jay, still scowling, storms out without another word. I pick Dude up again and go to follow Jay, but stop to look at Mal when I get to the door.
“Mal, I know you’re upset, but I know you’re strong enough to move on. Just because the love spell’s broken doesn't mean your life will be too."
“I’m brewing the antidote tonight, Carlos. But it’s for Ben.” She starts to close the door, but then adds bitterly: “Be lucky you found someone who loves you as you are, not just because they’re under a spell.”
I try to apologize but she slams the door shut. Dude lets out a high-pitched whine and signals me to start back to my dorm. Thankfully no one’s around to see the big grin on my face.
“She loves me! Do you hear that, bud? She loves me!”
I can’t believe it! Out of all the luck I’ve had, my life might actually be turning around. If only we didn’t have to take over the world.
I get back to the dorm to find Jay sulking by the window. I try to greet him, only to get a rough grunt in response.
“She could’ve at least tried to see my side,” Jay grumbles. “We all know she’s falling for Ben, yet she’s still gung-ho with impressing her mom.”
“We all know how Maleficent can get when she doesn’t get her way. This whole new world is new to us, Jay, and Mal’s trying to hold onto how we used to be.” I set Dude on my bed and go to look for his food bowl. “Just give her some time and maybe she’ll change her mind?”
Jay just grunts, unconvinced. “Yeah. Maybe. I just hope there's food at the party tomorrow”
I ignore him and busy myself by filling Dude’s bowl. At least you’re not mad. This is a happy day, the day I find out that there’s someone in my life who loves me.
But how do I let her know I feel the same?

Tumblr media
“Hey Mal? Can I ask you a dumb question?” Ben asked as he walked me back to my dorm.
We were both still wet, catching odd glances from people who passed us by. But luckily, we weren’t dripping all over the school. Ben had put back on his regular clothes, so he looked almost normal, despite his hair. I, on the other hand, was a sad sight.
“Go ahead,” I replied nonchalantly.
“So, the other day I introduced Carlos to Dude, our campus dog and he was petrified. And I asked him why and he told me that Cruella had told him all this bad stuff about dogs and stuff… and I was just wondering if you knew why she had… told him that? Because, she’s not afraid of dogs…”
I shook my head. “No. It’s all part of her plan to have complete control over her little boy.”
Ben’s face scrunched together in confusion. “I don’t understand.”
“Cruella de Vil is the most manipulative person on the island. Fortunately, most of us don’t see it, but Carlos lives with her. If he’s scared of dogs, then she can use that as an excuse to make him do what she asks or… scare him away from coming to Auradon. Things like that,” I explained. “She has Carlos hanging off her every word. And every other word out of her mouth is a lie, so… he sometimes doesn’t understand things that we do.”
Ben bit down on his lip. “I’m sorry.”
“No one has it great on the island,” I responded. “Carlos is truly very lucky. Because his mom does love him. She does that because she’s messed up in the head and believes that that is the only way to guarantee that he’ll always stay with her. Always be her little boy.”
We stopped outside my door. I wanted to tell him more for some reason. I wanted to explain what life was like for a kid on the Isle. I wished that Ben could know our pain.
But… all that would do is make him feel guilty.
“Goodbye, Ben. I had a really great time today.”
His smile reappeared. “I did too.”
I opened my mouth to say something more, but behind me, the dorm room swung open and Evie sighed.
“There you are,” she huffed. “I was worried you had died or something. You two were out for so long. Hi Ben,” she added, with a smile. “We need you to- Why are you sopping wet?”
I gulped. “Uh… lake.”
She shook her head, obviously exasperated. “We’ll deal with that later. Come on.”
She linked onto my arm and pulled me in.
“Bye!” Ben was able to call out, before Evie closed the door on him.
Inside, Jay and Carlos were already lounging around on our furniture. Carlos had his laptop in front of him, like he often did nowadays, and Jay was laid out across my bed, staring up at the ceiling.
“How did it go? Are you okay?” Evie interrogated, pulling me away from the door.
“It went fine,” I said, suspicious of why they were all sitting around, waiting for me to get back.
“We were actually scared that Ben had murdered you on the side of the road,” Jay said, not showing any concern.
“This is Auradon. And Ben. Why on Earth would you think that he’d hurt me?”
“I knew you didn’t want to go,” Evie explained. “I thought that you’d get out of there the minute you had a chance. Now seriously, why are you wet?”
I cleared my throat. “I wasn’t kidding. Lake.”
She raised her eyebrows, then seemed to realize that I wasn’t going to elaborate on the further.
“Woah, M,” she started, startled. “You’re wearing his jacket… Did he, uh, see your back?”
The boys’ ears perked up when they heard Evie bring up the old injury.
I crossed my arms, hesitating. “Yeah, he did.”
Everyone shared a look between them. It made me feel as if I had messed up. I could feel their unease at the thought that Ben knew and I wasn’t sure how to feel about it either.
I groaned.
Evie was the one to pull them out of their thoughts, saying, “I think we should get you into some dry clothes. Boys, you can go.”
They moved sluggishly, as if one of them would come up with a way to remedy this situation any minute now, but no one had any suggestions. I watched them go past, when something came to mind.
“Oh, Carlos!” I said.
He tensed up, unsure of what I wanted. “Yeah?”
The fear in his eyes made me sad. On the Isle, all you could ever want was to look down on someone and see that they were afraid of you. Normally, I wouldn’t do that to my friends.
In Auradon though, we were always afraid. Most news was bad news. And I was different now. Carlos knew that.
“I just wanted to say… Sorry for snapping at you the other day. In the kitchen. I was… tense.”
He looked shell shocked. “Yeah… I mean, no it’s cool. I just… We’re all here for you, Mal.”
He didn’t wait around to see my reaction. He turned and followed Jay out the door and back to their dorm room.
~ ~ ~
“Children,” Fairy Godmother started, interrupting us from our classwork. “Excuse me. As you know, uh, this Thursday is family day here at Auradon Prep. And, because your parents can’t be here due to, uh… distance, we’ve arranged for a special treat.”
We shared a look between us. None of us were… disappointed that our parents couldn’t be there, but we were more than happy to take whatever surprise she had planned.
She approached the tv she had set up at the front of the classroom and pressed a button on the console.
I almost screamed the minute my mother popped up on the screen. Her face was directly in front of the camera, blocking the other parents from view. And she looked pissed.
“I don’t see anything!” she growled at the screen, slowly moving back into her seat.
“Kids,” Fairy Godmother prompted, noting that none of us had gotten up to look at the screen.
I didn’t move for a moment, staring at my mother with wide eyes.
I had been under this idea that my mom couldn’t reach me in Auradon, but I was a fool to think so. I could never escape my mother… not truly.
Evie put a hand on my upper arm, slowly guiding me out of my seat and up to the tv, with the boys.
“Can I please see a remote!” my mother screamed at the Evil Queen, aggressively pushing buttons. “Ugh. It’s broken.”
A second later, all their eyes widened, presumably because we popped up on the screen.
“Evie!” The Evil Queen cried, looking at her daughter. “It’s mommy!”
Evie waved at her mom.
“Who’s the old bat?” Cruella squinted, trying to get a better look.
My breath hitched when I saw our teacher’s face drop. “This is Fairy Godmother,” I explained.
“Still doing tricks with eggplants?” Maleficent jabbed.
“I turned a pumpkin into a beautiful carriage,” she defended.
All the villains started laughing. Before this could become an actual argument, I put my hand on her shoulder and said, “Thank you so much,” trying to prompt her to walk offscreen.
She did after a moment, leaving us alone to face our parents.
“Mal!” my mother screeched, finally getting in a good look at me.
Her voice made me jump. I tried to play it off, but I knew that she could tell something was off with me. All I could hope was that she assumed I was putting up a front while Fairy Godmother was around.
“I miss you!” she lied. “When will I ever get to see you again darling?”
I wanted to vomit in my mouth. “There’s this big Coronation coming up. I assume it will be after that,” I explained, trying my best to hint at her that we had a plan for getting the wand.
“When?” she questioned.
“Friday. 10 am.”
With every word, her voice lost its false excitement. “Are you sure I can’t see you before then?”
I sucked in my lips, nodding.
“Carlos!” his mother shouted. “Is that a dog?”
Carlos looked at all of us, Dude in his arms. I should have realized that this would be an issue. Dude never left his side these days.
“Mal!” My mother grabbed my attention once more. “I could really use you back here on the Isle with me. I’m counting you to help me with my summer plans.”
It was so fake. My mother was threatening me through a camera and for some reason, I wish she was here to do. Because it wouldn’t feel so fake. Because then I wouldn’t be so conflicted over what to do. Because when I was with her I never felt as scared as I did right now.
“I know, mom,” I said, breathily. I was losing oxygen.
Evie saw and sprung into action. She reached an arm around and smacked Jay, signalling to me. Jay caught on a second later, shutting off the tv, before our parents could notice that he was reaching for the button.
The minute the screen went black, she wrapped an arm around me and started to guide me out of the room.
“Evie, what are…?” I felt light-headed.
“Boys, grab our stuff!” she called back, pushing me straight past our desks.
“Mal? Evie? Where are you going?” Fairy Godmother questioned, but Jay was in her path before she could stop us.
“Thanks for the special treat,” he said, trying to make her feel better about the fact that the idea had truly been a trainwreck.
Evie just walked on, guiding me through hallways and back to our dorm room. I didn’t stop her. I couldn’t if I wanted to. I was just so startled.
I had stayed calm. Throughout most of the phone call, I had been fairly normal: telling my mom what she wanted to know and listening to her demands. But the minute she had become threatening, I lost it.
Evie shut the door behind us and automatically pulled me into a hug. I didn’t say anything, didn’t even hug her back.
“Breathe with me, okay? In… Out…”
She kept this up until the boys came back, walking in silently, backpacks in hand.
“Did you explain to Fairy Godmother what’s going on?” she questioned.
Carlos nodded, eyes fixed on my vacant expression. “We just said that Maleficent was threatening Mal. She didn’t ask why or how.”
“Are you okay Mal?” Jay asked.
I blinked a couple of times. “It’s like she’s suffocating me. Just by looking at her my whole body feels heavy… like I’m already dead, simply staring as she laughs and walks away from the carnage.”
“Mal, it’s okay,” Carlos started. “Your mom can’t get to you here-”
I scoffed. “You must not know my mother. I’ve been pretending that we could just stay here and live out our happy lives in Auradon, but my mother won’t give up that easy. Once she realizes that I failed, or gave up, or whatever sad thing happens, she’s going to find someone else to do the job for her. And the first thing she will do once she’s here is kill me. Or worse.”
No one responded. They didn’t need to. We all just let the weight of the task that had been dropped on us sink in.

The Letter Ch.1
Professor Callaghan was sent to the Isle of the Lost for the crimes he committed: attempted murder, arson, manslaughter and the many other things. When Carlos and Jay were going back to the school and create a phony wand, the disgraced Professor gave the de Vil boy an envelope containing a letter and asked him to give it to his daughter.
FFN I AO3
Carlos and Jay were hurrying towards the limo when they were stopped by an elderly man. He was wearing a green vest over his red shirt.
“Carlos.” The man called.
“P-pro-professor Callaghan!” Carlos breathed out.
It’s been years since Robert Callaghan was sent over to the isle from his cell in San Fransokyo. It was a miracle work that his daughter wasn’t sent to the isle with him.
“When you go back to Auradon.” The disgraced professor handed Carlos an envelope. “Can you give this to Abigail?” He asked. “To my daughter.”
“Carlos.” Jay called out. “We need to move.”
“Y-yeah.” Carlos stuttered out. “Sure.” He immediately pocketed the letter and ran to catch up to Jay.
Robert was left standing alone as a smile graced his face.
“So C.” Jay started as he started the car’s engine. “How’d you know Professor Lunatic?” He asked.
“Hey!” Carlos replied indignantly.” Professor Callaghan isn’t a lunatic.” He defended.
“Really?” Jay questioned as he drove the limo. “Cause I’ve heard rumors.” He chuckled.
“You always hear rumors Jay.” Carlos retorted as he elbowed the driver.
“As I was saying.” Jay resumed his train of thought. “I’ve heard that he’s way worse than your mother.” He continued. “Like abusive worse.”
“And my mother wasn’t?” Carlos rolled his eyes. “But no, he’s actually the only sane person in the isle, us four included.”
“Hey!” Jay reacted with indignation.
Jay and Carlos chuckled at Carlos’s words. Their foursome were the people ruling the isle, well Mal was and the other three were more or less glorified lackeys.
“How so though?” Jay asked.
“Let’s just say none of my scars came from Professor Callaghan.” Carlos stated. “He never lifted a finger against me.”
“No way!” Jay stated in disbelief. “Dude you were told stay after his classes.” He explained. “And you know how the teachers of Dragon Hall are!”
“Well yeah.” Carlos agreed. “But he’s different.” He added. “Before I met you guys, Professor Callaghan was the one making me safe from my mother.” He admitted. “Every time people can’t find me, I’m hiding inside Professor Callaghan’s quarters.”
“Wait, so when we were trying to find you that one time, you were actually hiding with Professor Lunatic?” Jay exclaimed. “Nice!” He applauded. “No one would think you’d go to Professor Lunatic for help.” He chuckled. “He’s one of the most feared teachers on the isle after all.”
“Well people were killed over misinformation before.” Carlos chuckled. “In my case, I survived.” He continued.
“We’re here.” Jay stated as he stopped the car. “Let’s go!” He continued as he unbuckled his seatbelt.”
“Yeah.” Carlos nodded as he did the same and followed Jay.
A few hours before Cotillon started. Carlos had successfully asked Jane to be his date for the event, finally. He was about to put on his white button-up shirt when Jay went inside their room, his scars visible to the other.
“Are you really sure none of those came from Professor Callaghan?” Jay asked.
“No.” Carlos answered. “He’s the nicest person in the isle.” He added. “What did you hear about him anyway?” He asked. “To make everyone conclude that he was worse than my mother.” He explained.
“Well.” Jay began as he stripped off his Swords and Shields attire. “People say that he was arrested in the isle after he took his daughter hostage.” He shared.
“That certainly explains things.” Carlos chuckled. “Don’t tell anyone, but he intended that to happen.” He added.
“Then people were right!” Jay exclaimed. “He’s really as bad as Cruella, maybe even worse.”
“No, it’s not.” Carlos immediately corrected. “Professor Callaghan was completely sane when he did that.” He explained. “It was to save his daughter from being sent to the isle.” He added.” He had heard that my entire family were sent to the isle just for being related to my mother.” He continued. “To save Abigail from that fate, he made his daughter into a victim of a crime.” He added. “His crime.”
“Clever.” Jay praised.
“Where do you think I got my skills from?” Carlos raised his eyebrows.
“No way.” Jay exclaimed. “He tutored you privately?!” He questioned.
“That and also taught me how to invent things.” He proudly answered. “I was just a fast learner.”
“What was he and his daughter were supposed to be in anyway?” Jay asked.
“Arson, manslaughter, damage to property, attempted murder.” Carlos enumerated.
“Seriously?” Jay exclaimed. “That’s a lot!”
“I don’t know about that tho.” Carlos continued. “I feel like Professor Callaghan isn’t telling me the whole story.” He stated.
Jay gave off a non-committal sound as he began to tied his hair in a bun and wear his leather jacket Evie made for him for Cotillon.
“I’m guessing you’re going to deliver his letter to his daughter after Cotillon.” Jay asked.
“Yeah.” Carlos nodded. “It’s the least I could do for him.” He explained.
Evie had just requested to let the other Villain Kids get to Auradon.
Carlos can’t say he disagreed with Evie’s sentiments, after all a lot of the kids in the isle need saving. He didn’t want any young kids to experience what the older people experienced, he certainly didn’t want any kid experience what he did.
“Speaking of requests.” Carlos opened. “Can I go to San Fransokyo?” He asked.
“Sure.” Ben approved. “Can I ask why?”
“I just want to give a letter to someone there.” Carlos answered. “It’s the least that I could do for them.”
“Okay.” Ben nodded. “When would you want to leave?” He asked.
“Can I go to tomorrow?” Carlos asked.
“Tomorrow it is then.” The king nodded.

OUAT. Rumpelstiltskin
prompt: beginning
WELCOME TO THE FAMILY (Ao3)
Rumpelstiltskin knew it would be pointless to attempt to pry his girlfriend away from Cruella and the Black Fairy's attentions. If he had hoped to keep the evening to a short dinner and then make their excuses to rush back to Storybrooke, Belle had seemed delighted at the idea of sitting down with 'Ella' and 'Delilah' for a brief chat.
They were already halfway into the second hour, and none of them showed any sign of bringing their happy society to a halt. The two older women were keeping Belle distracted with carefully edited tales of his childhood, making at least the effort to make sure that there were no allusions to either the century or specific ages for themselves.
"Be glad we don't bring out the photo albums," Cruella teased him when she noticed his thunderous expression.
Belle bounced on her seat. "There are pictures?"
Rumpelstiltskin raised an eyebrow, smirking at the thought of his birth mother caught in her own words. When he had been a child, they would have needed a painter brought home and several hours of work before they'd had a single picture.
"Well, not here," Cruella said airily.
As ever, Rumpelstiltskin tried not to feel envious of the ease with which lies rolled off a human's tongue. It had taken him decades to be able to tell the difference, and in a few cases it would still give him a hard time when the other person was in denial. Humans were complicated. Much more interesting than the collection Pan kept in his little island, and definitely less foolish than those who braved an interview with the Black Fairy for a favor.
Human emotions came in all sizes and packages, and often made for interesting mixes. The brave could be foolish, the cowards could be powerful, and beautiful young ladies could fall in love with older men who knew little about courting women, and even less about dating them.
Right now, he would have traveled in time with a disposable camera if it would have kept the disappointed pout off Belle's face.
"Pity," she said, and then grinned. "It would have been fun."
Then a voice he hadn't expected to hear through the evening spoke up. "It can still be fun," Pan said, though he didn't look up from the game on his iPhone.
Cruella and the Black Fairy looked over as well, a hint of surprise on their otherwise smooth expressions. They also were familiar with the conditions Rumpelstiltskin had set in order to hold this meeting. Prominent among them had been the old adage not to say anything if there was nothing good to say.
There hadn't been a peep from Pan throughout the afternoon except for a brief greeting when Rumpelstiltskin and Belle and the requests to pass him the salt or the salad from down the table. Since he was playing the role of a teenage cousin hooked up to the online world, Belle hadn't suspected that 'Peter's' lack of participation in the conversation was too out of the ordinary.
Except that now he had spoken, and knowing that Belle wouldn't let go of that tidbit, Rumpelstiltskin started to wish Pan had at least a half-human's gift to bend the truth.
"So there are pictures?" Belle broke into the tense silence, unaware of its cause.
Pan looked up. Wearing one of those poisonously charming grins, he nodded. "Indeed."
Rumpelstiltskin exchanged looks with his godmother and birth mother, realizing that they were just as surprised.
Pan sucked in his shoulders, a typical boy already tired of giving information that wasn't about him. "Well, drawings. And several rough sketches" he admitted, clicking his way through a new level in his game. "Found about a dozen of them." He gave a vague head shake in Rumpelstiltskin's direction. "They should still be in his dad's study."
The picture of Pan in a study almost made him chuckle.
The realization that Pan couldn't be lying and those drawings had to be real rendered him mute.
Belle took his silence as permission to prod further. "That's great!" she cried out, already coming to her feet and forgetting her insecurities about being a guest at such a great house. She turned to him, a huge smile on her face. "Won't you show me? You never said your father was an artist!"
Rumpelstiltskin narrowed his eyes. "I don't think he merits the name," he said.
In perfect mimicry of a sullen sixteen-year-old, Pan rolled his eyes.
"Little boys should show more respect," Rumpelstiltskin grit out.
Pan gave him an amused look. "Yes, they should," he said pointedly, needing no more than that hateful smirk to remind Rumpelstiltskin who would be regarded as the real child in their original society.
No wonder the fae had no punishment for parricide, Rumpelstiltskin thought. It must be a rite of passage among them.
He felt himself bristle, and knew that at further provocation he and Pan would start to argue. That would inevitably lead to a fight, and the impressive mansion would be reduced to no better than rubble by the time he and Pan had settled down.
Belle would never be allowed to retain her memories of the afternoon, but Rumpelstiltskin knew from experience that missing memories didn't take the distrust along with them.
He made a fist and tried to ignore the adolescent abomination.
Pan chuckled. "Always so weak," he whispered.
Incensed, Rumpelstiltskin grabbed for his magic.
...and felt as if a pail of freezing water had been poured over him. From Pan's offended expression, he was experiencing the same snuffing of his power.
"Rum?" Bell asked, sounding worried.
Rumpelstiltskin forced himself to smile. "Everything is fine, my dear."
From the corner of his eye, Rumpelstiltskin saw his birth mother and godmother share a look. What would have been an exasperated exchange between two mortal women became a whole discussion after centuries of being burdened with the other's constant presence in their lives.
When the Black Fairy gave a tiny nod, Rumpelstiltskin groaned.
This wouldn't be fine.
"Now, boys," Cruella said, her tone too sweet. "Why don't you go upstairs to look for Malcolm's work? Belle can stay here with us girls."
Pan looked rebellious.
Troubled to find himself agreeing with the disgusting piece of slime, Rumpelstiltskin shook his head. Leaving Belle alone with the other two women was a recipe for disaster. "I think---"
"I think you can do this sweet girl a favor and bring down those pictures, instead of hauling her over to the third floor."
"I don't mind, Ella," Belle piped in.
Cruella gave her a fond look, then tutted. "I'm too old-fashioned to let you run around on those heels when there are strapping young men around to do the work instead." Belle was frowning, ready to challenge that bit of foolishness, so Cruella smiled and struck on her weaker side. "You don't mind spending time with Delilah and me, do you?"
Belle, always eager to please, finally shook her head.
"But," Rumpelstiltskin started.
Cruella's head snapped toward him and Pan. She gave father and son a warning glare, careful to time it with the Black Fairy drawing Belle to sit beside her and distracting her with yet another amusing anecdote. Her index finger motioned between the two males and then pulled up in wordless command.
Rumpelstiltskin and Pan grumbled and huffed, but both of them stood to their feet without protest.
The only reason the Black Fairy would pretend to be uninvolved was if she was already sure her wishes would be carried out. Neither of them wanted the strongest of the fairies in any realm to actually pay attention to them when they had displeased her.
"We'll be back at once," he promised Belle.
Belle smiled guilelessly. "Oh, you don't need to worry," she reassured him. Sweet Belle. Darling Belle. Completely oblivious Belle. "I'm sure I'll have a great time with your aunts."
Rumpelstiltskin fought the urge to break through the Black Fairy's dampening magic and whisk his love away back to town.
The Black Fairy grinned and put a hand on Belle's shoulder, effectively placing her under her protection. Even at full power, his magic would be useless against her. "How could we not?" she asked, sounding actually eager to get to know Belle better. "Your Belle is such a delight!"
Belle blushed. Whether at the praise or the second-hand claim of ownership, he didn't know.
"Indeed," Cruella concurred, sitting down on Belle's other side and patting the back of her hand fondly, "I think this is the beginning of a great friendship."
And the three looked up at him, similarly content smiles on their faces.
Rumpelstiltskin gulped.
Took a step back.
"You're doomed, boy," Pan whispered.
Rumpelstiltskin shook his head and marched away, unwilling to discuss the subject with the devil of his childhood. "It will be fine," he repeated to himself.
And refused to admit that at this point it was more stubbornness than logic that made him say it.
The End 21/01/17
