Wondering if you have any Tomarry/Harrymort case-fic/mystery recs?

Thanks so much for the ask! I also can’t get enough of the casefic/mystery genre.

Usually I throw together a mix of both WIPs (why WIPs?) and complete fics, but for this set of 15 recs, I selected for fics which are either complete or still actively updating, so as not to leave you on a cliffhanger on a mystery fic! A few of these fics are outright casefics, and a few of these have a mystery component where the big reveal comes to light as the story unfolds. Hope you enjoy!

Harry, Hermione, and Ron skip the Halloween feast, only to wake up to a world where the castle isn’t right. It’s cold, empty, quiet. The layers of dust suggest it’s been abandoned for years. Reconciling with Death by Madame_Psychosis (M, 27k, complete)

Featuring a dead girl in a forest, little-soldier-boys, some tenuous grasps on reality, straw mothers, a ghost in a bathroom and, slowly and sadly, kindness from a boy who’s just passing through time.

The Matchmaker by @eris-dawn (M, 44k, complete)

The Matchmaker is a serial abductor whose modus operandi consists of pairing two same-sex individuals together in a coffin, six feet underground - buried alive. He isn't a killer. He's a kidnapper with morals, and Detective Chief Inspector Tom Riddle finds himself obsessed with solving the case. Unfortunately for Tom, the Matchmaker is just as intent on knowing him.

Tom Riddle and the Quest for Vulnerability by lejf (E, 16k, complete)

They found him in an old house, under the stairs. His face was pale and instantly recognisable. aka: Auror Harry Potter has eighteen-year-old Tom Riddle bent over the table barely a day after he becomes his ward.

Wings of Ash by IceLynx (M, 31k, complete)

If eight people going missing isn't cause enough for panic, one of them being found dead might do it. The Ministry of Magic has no choice but accept all the help on offer, including that of former Auror Harry Potter. For Harry, it might be a chance to get his job back, if he can only crack the case first. Surely Harry can be forgiven if he too takes all the help that's offered. Including that of his pet snake, the former Dark Lord Voldemort.

Build Me No Shrines, by Occultings. Another Binderary project!

"A few months after the events of Guanyin Temple, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji take on a night hunt of an unusual sort: The Burial Mounds are spreading, quickly and with no apparent explanation. 

In Wei Wuxian, it brings old, long-buried things bubbling to the surface."

I love this fic. It has everything! Post-canon case fic, a gaggle of the juniors, pining, some seriously creepy goings-on, Yunmeng sibling feels and endgame Wangxian. (A friend said recently, oh, you know the fic! The one with the tooth! And I did indeed immediately know it was this one.)

And that last line of the summary hits totally differently once you've read the fic. Just sayin'.

I typeset this one last summer--I think it was only my third or fourth project. And then I printed it! And folded and sewed it! ... and then it sat with half a dozen other text blocks in a large, ever-growing pile on the dining room table because I just could not get going on building cases and casing in. But! My Binderary goal was to overcome and finish All The Things, and fourteen books later, cases are no longer quite so intimidating.

Homemade bookcloth for the cover, with a strip of leftover chiyogami from the endpapers just because. Cover and spine are acrylic paint stencilled on, and yes, I am quite pleased with myself over that little mountain illustration on the spine.

I'd make some small tweaks to the typeset now (including justifying the text, ack) but I'm pretty happy with the overall look of it regardless!

John has to somehow rebuild his life in the wake of Mary's betrayal and Sherlock's deceptions.

"We Happy Few" - @geometea. listen to me. listen. i am looking deeply into your eyes. read this fucking fic. it's hard to shill without spoiling anything, BUT: wyll is a still-pacted grand duke. he used to have a bunch of unresolved romantic tension with astarion and now hasn't spoken to him for 15 years. now take that premise and add body horror, beautiful ominous surreal images, and SURPRISE BIG EMOTIONS. just trust me on this one, guys

"Crossed Blades" - @rebelontherocks. this is a...i think i have to call this a cozy sex romp. wyll and astarion are married, wyll is a busy duke, astarion needs more enrichment, astarion invents a very silly sex game by roleplaying teenage-wyll's smut books. wyll is So Deeply Into It. i love this fic for its characterization, its banter, and its commitment to paralleling character psychology to what sounds like an absolutely wild in-universe smut series (that is sketched with an impressive amount of detail and care tbh??).

"Comfort" - @acephalouscreature. short and sweet. wyll is injured and everyone expects astarion to take care of him. luckily, astarion has a dastardly plan to fake feelings for wyll by thinking about his feelings for wyll. you sure fooled them, astarion!! also featuring: astarion trying to figure out how to comfort someone by thinking about horses

"False Compare" - @jellyfishline. i'd recommend checking out their work generally, but i fell in love with this one first. wyll writes a sonnet! astarion is mean about it until he isn't! deeply in-character with an emphasis on how each of them communicates affection. gorgeous prose

"how to escape the torment nexus" - @ushauz. this series is incredibly unique, set in a fucked-up bad end where wyll is a lemure, astarion is still on the run from cazador, and almost everyone else is dead. where this really shines imo is wyll's POV: he's been through literal hell, doesn't remember his life, and is wading through his unconscious attachment to astarion like a foreign language. (side note also read Heart of Stone for a great lae'zel character piece)

"An Acorn in the Moonlight" - @anonyhex. this is one of the first wyllstarion fics i ever read and it has a special place in my heart!! it's particularly cathartic to read for Wyll reasons, including him actually getting to Have Emotions about what Ulder put him through. and they are so sweet with each other!!

"temporal displacement" - @purplecatghostposts. ok this came out like. yesterday but listen, i LOVE outsider pov of an astarion who's learned to show affection somewhat, seen from the eyes of someone who doesn't know his history and has no reason to suspect All Of That. and when that "outsider" is a dying 20-year-old wyll who just saw astarion step out of a time portal. well.

"nothing to make a song about" - themortal. for when you want something meaty and casefic-adjacent, set in a post-canon where wyll is the blade and not the duke (for once). contains bonding on the road, getting romantically snowed in together, and Symbolic Fetch-Quests.

i am also watching closely: "One of Those Prince-Types" by @lesbianralzarek and "sigh no more" by @tomorrowsrain. both are one chapter in and promise to be meaty, with execution that already feels very very promising

SPECIAL MENTION TO "Like Death (or Birth)" by The_Dancing_Walrus, which has some fraught implied background wyllstarion and is just generally completely baller. astarion kind-of sort-of accidentally adopts yenna, who got fucked up by her time as a potential sacrifice to bhaal. it works! i promise it works

aka fic rec series where I scream "you need to read this!" into the void

Indefinite Lines by arwamachine

I know I'm late on this one and I can only apologise to myself for that really. Compelling casefic, cinematic writing, interesting narrative structure, the cutest Rosie incarnation this side of s4, and plenty - PLENTY - of angst and comfort. Incredible character voices, including one of the best Sherlocks I've ever read. Head the tags re: whump though, because hoo boy. @arwamachine is responsible for creating a term that I now think about once a day which I will refer to here as m*** s****** for fear of spoilers. Don't miss Bonus Lines, which is a collection of incredible deleted/bonus scenes that accompanies the fic.

2. Thankless (a 5 + 1) by Silvergirl

Do you love Lestrade? Do you love @totallysilvergirl? Lucky for you, I already knew your answer to both of those questions was OF COURSE YES, WHY DO YOU ASK. As it says on the tin, a 5 + 1 wherein we revisit key moments throughout the series where Lestrade helps Sherlock until, finally, it finally sinks in (hopefully before it's too late). Gorgeous, lush, emotionally resonant writing across the board. I adore Silver's Lestrade (and pretty much everything Silver writes, honestly, including the epic, fantastically written Drawn to Stars and the heartachy, beautifully written A Case of You) and I'm 100% positive you will too.

3. Inscrutable to the Last by DiscordantWords

I love a super unique fic idea and @discordantwords always seems to have an endless supply. How they do it, I would love to know. This fic. THIS FIC. I don't want to give any spoilers but the inherent premise is just sooooo clever. Precise and devastating writing, excellent plotting, with spot-on character details and dialogue (as usual). You should also read their heartbreaking (and heart-healing) s4 fix-it (Never) Turn Your Back to the Sea after you give this one a go!

To appease my frothing rage and remind myself why I love the ship, I would like to offer you and the lovelies a few of my very favorite KaiShin fanfic recs. My personal favorites on AO3 are "A study in scarlet" by kittebasu (casefic + character study), "Dominoes" by scratchienails (superhero au), "The suffering of fools" by Angelicsentinel (what happenes in Vegas), and on ff.net "(Not) Supernatural" by cursed detective (fake supernatural shenanigans). All of them are fantastic, though they can be kind of heavy, and I reread them frequently! (Not) has shinichi somewhere on the ace spectrum, though I don't think the author ever explicitly states that, and is a bit more humorous than the others if someone wants a slightly lighter hearted take. If anyone is interested and feeling as inclined to ignore stupidity as I am, please give them a try!

The Curious Case of the Casablanca Killer by meet_me_in_samarra (G, 55,886 w., 16 Ch. || Post THoB, Case Fic, Bromance / Friendship, Clever John, John is a Conductor of Light, BAMF John / Sherlock, Sassy John, Cheeky Sherlock) – Deemed a three at best, the case of an invisible burglar in a historic cinema who stole nothing only caught Sherlock’s attention because he was bored. Also, he wanted to do John a favour. In the end, this proved to be a real stroke of luck. Otherwise, Sherlock would have missed an intriguing mystery that quickly ramped up in complexity.

The von Karma Guide to Whipping Your Brother Into Shape by mundanecactus - might be my fave non-girlfriend ace attorney fic of all time. masquerades as a wrightworth but is actually a franmaya. informed countless headcanons of mine and accidentally awakened kin memories i did not know i had. there is a scene while miles and franziska go grocery shopping and act so annoyingly siblings the whole time i had to start biting my pillow. please read this

mysterious lotus casebook - jianghu period cdrama, excellent characters, super fun time

west out of yumen - ni ni + bai yu + desert adventure thriller?? literally what is there not to like. i just finished this last night!!

uhhh shout out also to the blood of youth (would enjoy if you enjoyed mlc), here we meet again (cute romcom i just binged over the weekend), the road to ordinary (this post reminded me i never finished the show because i got too busy, so it's back on my watchlist, the eps i did watch were excellent!), the pledge of allegiance (casefic period cdrama, dragged at times but was overall v interesting), a league of nobleman (also casefic period cdrama; meh about song weilong but everyone else in this was excellent).

wanted to like but never got into, but might be a me problem rather than a problem with the show: road home, under the microscope

The Guests of Cloud Recesses by cafecliche

A shorter pamphlet-bound fic! Winter ghosts that steal the warmth from your stove, very seasonal right now in my hemisphere.

The Guests of Cloud Recesses by cafecliche is a post-canon MDZS casefic and ghost story set in the winter, with an unfolding mystery, and some solid Wangxian relationshipping. I love both those things! There's some lovely evocative details here, and clearly I rec it.

I miraculously had enough decent daylight to get some pictures, since it's been pretty gloomy here this week. The cover is waxed cardstock, the thread I bound it with is some leftover navy cotton from a weaving project, and both pieces of art are woodblock prints in the public domain.
