sea of thieves rly was like. we are delaying the tenth season soo much its gonna be soooo good you guys <33 and dropping hints for more hunters call content and then the reveal drops and its just guilds. in the year of our lord 2023 (and one more mid world event i guess. coming a month after that but initially planned to be the one thing in season 11. and also the singleplayer mode coming in on december so two months into the "season")

"Why is it so hot?" You grit your teeth as Mikey asks the question for what feels like the tenth time.

"Perhaps because it is the middle of summer," you reply, trying your best to keep irritation out of your voice. He has no internal temperature regulation, you remind yourself. It's only mostly his fault that you're here.

"But we're in the mountains, it's supposed to be cool!"

"Not in the middle of summer."

Mikey just moans piteously, pulling his hat off his head to fan himself with it. You wipe the sweat off your brow and then pull the sunscreen out of the side pocket of your backpack.

"Here, you're gonna get sunburned. Let me." You pour some of the sunscreen in your palm and smooth it over his head. He lets out a happy chirp at the sensation and leans into your touch.

You smile at him. Perhaps suggesting a hiking date in the middle of summer and then doubling down when you warned him against it wasn't his brightest moment. But you did agree to it. Eventually. And despite the buzzing heat and Mikey's complaints, you are enjoying yourself.

It is a beautiful day. Due to the heat you've only seen a couple of other people crazy enough to be out here, so you have the area to yourself. The flowers are abundant and beautiful, as Mikey promised. And he takes your hand with a bright grin of his own as you continue towards the nearby treeline. What more could you want?

You both breathe a sigh of relief as the trail takes you into the shade of the trees. It's still hot, but definitely more manageable. You hum a little in happiness as you look around at the gorgeous scenery.

Suddenly Mikey perks up. "Do you hear that?" He hustles off, pulling you along heedless of your protests. However, as you get closer to the source of the noise, you start hustling with him. It sounds like...

"A waterfall!" Mikey crows in delight. It's a small one, tumbling over a short cliff into a round pond before heading downhill in a stream. But that doesn't detract from the beauty.

Mikey spends ten minutes taking various aesthetic pictures for his So-Shell account while you sit on a rock and watch him, grateful for the rest. Perhaps you and Mikey should go hiking more often, you are clearly out of shape.

You take off your own hat and lean back, closing your eyes as a slight breeze ruffles the trees around you. It's cooler near the water, and you can smell the earthy loam of the pond bank. The sound of Mikey's camera mixes with the insects and bird calls in a surprisingly pleasant melody.

A rustling sound that definitely isn't the trees interrupts your quiet contemplation, and you look up to find Mikey sliding his shorts off his legs.

"What are you doing??" You hiss at him while looking around frantically. The trail is within sight, someone could come by at any time!

He stares at you deadpan while he straightens up. There is nothing on display, because he is a turtle. You, ah, forgot that. You bury your face in your hands while he starts to laugh.

You hear his laughter approach, and then he starts to tug on your shirt. "Come on," he urges, "you should try it. The grass feels great!"

"Mikey! The trail is right there," you gesture towards it with one hand while the other tries to pull your shirt back down. "Someone could walk by!"

"I will hear them before they can see you. I'll give you plenty of warning, I promise!" Mikey gives you the same pout that broke your resolve and caused this date in the first place, and you groan internally. You can't resist that face and he knows it.

"You just want to see my chest," you grumble as you let go of your shirt and let him whip it off of you. Mikey grins and waggles his eyebrows as he tugs you up and towards the pond.

"Maybe. But also, the grass really does feel good." You lay down next to him at the edge of the pond. He stretches out with a happy chirp and tucks one hand under your neck.

The grass does feel good, cool but not wet. Even the blades tickling your sides feel nice, soft, rather than annoying. You watch the sun shine through the trees above you with half-lidded eyes.

You fall asleep as Mikey starts to churr.

Speaking of, I know I joked that they've learned what worked with Shabriri from Mico (themes of eyes and insanity + "ascending" by mass sacrifice), but actually Navlaan too, if not even more so?

Navlaan says that the sorcerer was looking for new forms of magic but instead "created" him, which does have the vibe of accidentally ending with split personality during experiments (Jekyll and Hyde vibe), however, description of Scraps of Life says this:

An esoteric spell created by Navlaan, the infamous exiled sorcerer. Awakens the souls of the long-buried dead. The heretic Navlaan was executed along with his entire village, and the mere utterance of his name became a crime. Some say it was because he sought to restore the banned art of resurrection.

Basically bro used to be his own person, existing probably long before this sorcerer or at least independently, and was another victim of cancel culture dshfdshjfsd So, the line "But instead, he created me" would mean sort of rebirth by possessing this sorcerer. It is not direct possession as in, controlling the body as a puppet, but neither a personality born from within the 'original' person (typically from dark and repressed emotions). But it is a secret third thing; say, he barely had recollection and semblance of his original self after death, so completing the otherwise almost-blank state and filling the gaps from what was lost with the memories and feelings of the host is as good as being born as a new person.

And it IS kind of like Shabriri, too! Except, Yura is certainly no longer present in the body, whereas the original sorcerer still appears when the player is in the human state to beg them to stay away for their own sake. But Shabriri also 'adapted' to what Yura used to be, like suddenly being able to fight the same way as him (with the only addition of Frenzy incantations), and Ronin Set is described as "armour of man that calls himself Shabriri".

As for Navlaan, some of his grudges seem like they came from the sorcerer rather than his existence within this vessel, and he unknowingly carries them out. He also describes the sorcerer as "naive" when he is pretty much naive himself now; he simply trusts that we killed people just because we bring their things! Also description of Chaos Set says "Robe worn by a chaos sorcerer. He calls himself Navlaan, now", so whereas original sorcerer's name is never learned, it is probably now abandoned and not relevant as Navlaan 'overrode' the original. Again, really interesting concept of two people that become an amalgamation upon merging (that I tooooootaly didn't use for what happened with Logarius and the King, and that is toooootaly not what likely happened with Aldrich after he ate Gwyndolin.......)

+ Also cool thing that Shabriri and Navlaan both messed with something forbidden and forbidden for a good reason, and both were incredibly hated! Shabriri is "the most reviled man in history" and Navlaan was so hated that you could not even mention him! I am sorry for bringing this topic often but I just really like to analyse how Fromsoft invents 'a type of a guy' and reuses blueprints later without being unoriginal about it, it is just fascinating

For those who may not yet be familiar, (Be)Neath is a fan-made Fallen London ttrpg. It's a free 50-page BPR/CoC adaptation booklet that you can find online at the Homebrewery (works best with Chrome) or download as a PDF from Google Docs.

To play (Be)Neath, you'll need some basic knowledge of the BRP/CoC game system. If you're new to it, you can check out the official CoC Quick Start Rules, just in case!

We're also working on a separate Hallowmas adventure module (which we're currently playing) and a full scenario (scheduled for next year after our usual D&D Christmas adventure). These will be released (always for free!), along with updates to the intro booklet, after we've completed the respective beta-testing runs.
