Make Every Moment Last - Chapter 14 Preview

Beginning to Change

If he had to pinpoint a certain time when the whole thing started years later, Minato would have to say that it was after school, shortly after classes ended. He wasn’t sure what exactly led to that train of thought, but it started that downward spiral that uncovered something that he was glad ended up seeing the light of day. ...even if he was heavily against the path that led to it in the first place.

“Hey, do you think Mitsuru-senpai only had us save Fuuka because it was the right thing to do?” asked Takeba as the guys gathered up their things.

Iori raised a brow. “Whaddya mean?”

“I mean… we didn’t have to save both of them. We could have only gotten Kotone out and left Fuuka.” Okay, even Minato had to admit that was a dick move to make. Something like that just didn’t seem like something that Kirijo would do. “Was it because she’s a Non-Mortal and we need her here to save us?”

“We didn’t even know that Fuuka was Non-Mortal to begin with,” Mochizuki reminded them. “I think we did it for the right reasons.”

“I have to agree,” said Minato with a short nod. “Kirijo-senpai is a pain in my ass but she isn’t suspicious.”

“...You’re still mad about that student council business, aren’t you?” No shit he was. Especially with the recent business being what it was.

“Hidetoshi Odagiri is an absoulte asshole and won’t shut the fuck up about a cigarette that was found in the boys’ bathroom.” And Minato was about ready to sock him in the face if he brought it up again — even if Kirijo and/or Niijima were there. He was pretty sure that they were getting tired of his shit, too.

Iori chuckled. “It’s a clash of the pricks!”

“There can only be one, and that one is me.” And he would defend that title until the day he died. Minato sighed. “In any case, I’m serious about Kirijo-senpai. She acts all mysterious and crap, but it doesn’t mean she’s hiding something. I act like that.”

“It’s different!” Takeba groaned. Was it? Was it really? “It feels like we’re missing something.” No shit, that Tower just appeared out of nowhere. Everyone was missing something.

“What about you, Ryoji?” Iori asked, turning to the boy in question. “What do you think?”

Mochizuki hummed, finger to his chin as he thought about it. “Well… Mitsuru-senpai is regal and elegant… but I have to say that Arisato is right when he says she’s shrouded in mystery. I think that’s just part of her allure, though. Like a moth to the flame…”

“You know that’s not what I’m talking about,” huffed Takeba, frustrated over the boys getting her off track. “It's not just her, either. It’s her and Akihiko-senpai, too. He asked Kotone to bring him the Class E roster without explaining why. And there was when we got back from the station, too.”

“They never did answer Minato’s question about Aragaki-senpai,” added Iori as well. Yeah, there was that too. Considering how they dodged the question, Minato was pretty sure that they did know each other, but something had happened to make bringing him up awkward.

“I suppose…” Mochizuki mused, fidgeting with the end of his scarf. “Uh, speaking of which, they’re going to check on Kotone and Fuuka in the hospital today. I wonder how they’re doing.” Wait, was he avoiding that question now too?

“Koto-tan’s awake, I know that.” Iori took out his phone, flashing a conversation he had been having with someone earlier. “She texted me during lunch earlier, hoping to come home soon.”

“I know about that. She sent me about thirty button-mashing texts because she got so bored,” said Minato. He had to turn off his phone just to get it to stop. ...He reached into his bag and turned the thing back on. “...you think that Yamagishi is going to join us? She can use magic, so she’s definitely Non-Mortal. They ever figure out what she is?”

“I don’t know,” said Takeba. “But if Fuuka does join us, it’s going to be up to her. Not even Mitsuru-senpai can force her to do anything.”
