Friends In All Shapes
"Hi!"
Twilight/Wolfie's head popped up as soon as someone spoke, seemingly right next to his face. He looked up and stared in confusion at the one who had spoken, expecting to see a small child.
Instead, a dog stood over him, curly tail wagging happily.
"Hi!" She said again, dropping into a play bow. "Who are you? You're a weird looking friend, but that's ok! I'm Winnie, are you staying long?"
Twilight blinked, still groggy from waking up so quickly. This dog, Winnie, spoke fast. Not at all like the dogs he was used to meeting on the road during his travels.
"Um, hello." He said uncertainly.
"Hi!" Winnie said again, hopping up and then flopping down on the ground, as if she had so much energy that she had to add steps to everything the did. "What's your name?"
She was persistent. He'd give her that. "Twi- Wolfie. I'm Wolfie."
"Oooh! That's a good name!" Winnie cheered, wagging her tail more and tilting her curly head curiously. "What kinda friend are you? I'm a golden-doodle, but Dodge says I have some Hylian Shepherd in me. He's kinda cranky."
Twilight blinked slowly, drawing himself into a sitting position and trying to process all the information she was throwing at him. "I'm...I'm not sure I know what what means." He said, tilting his head. What kind of friend was he? Did she mean dog breed? What in Hylia's name is a golden-doodle? Wild's time sure had some strange creatures.
"He's a wolf, you moron." A deeper voice said from the entrance of the stable, and both wolf and dog turned to look at the jet black dog lounging just inside the archway. He, unlike Winnie, had short hair and a keen eye. This must be the 'Dodge' Winnie had mentioned. He was, in fact, very grumpy, it seemed.
"A Wolf?" Winnie looked confused. "Nooo, those are the bitey ones with the mean faces. His face isn't mean, and he has people! He's a friend!"
Twilight tuned out the two dogs' conversation from there. It was too early for animal shenanigans, in his opinion. Speaking of people, he saw the group just inside the stable, all asleep save for Time, who seemed to be reading something. Upon closer inspection, Twilight could see the subtle grin on the old man's face as he watched the wolf and dogs from the corner of his eye.
'That bastard', Twilight thought. He was tempted to plot some kind of childish response to this betrayal and was soon provided that opportunity.
"Who's that guy?" Winnie asked, head suddenly popping into Twilight's face. "Is he your person?"
Twilight was about to deny it, he didn't belong to anyone, but a fiendish thought passed through his mind.
"Yeah." He said, tail wagging in excitement. "Why don't you go say hi? He loves dogs, and cuddles."
Winnie froze, body tense as a bowstring, then shot off into the stable on a mission to say hello to her new friend's person.
Twilight puffed up in pride when he saw Time get tackled by the excited dog, and preened at the laughter he heard afterward. 'That's what you get,' he thought to himself, secretly taking delight in his predecessors' happiness.
Dodge watched from his spot, a twinkle of mischief in his eyes.
"You're sneaky, I like that." The older dog said, stretching and standing up slowly. "Winnie has a few things to learn. She's still a pup, but maybe she's onto something with this friend nonsense." If a dog ever reminded Twilight of Time, it would be Dodge. The older dog carried himself in an upright posture, wise eyes now sparking with life and a need for trouble.
"Why don't we go say hello to that person of yours?" The elder dog said with deceptive calmness, and Twilight swore he saw Dodge wink. He bared his teeth in a wolfy smile, and the two took off towards Time, much like Winnie had.
That was a fondly remembered day in everyone's memory after that. Waking up to Time on the ground laughing with Wolfie and two other dogs on top of him was something the younger heroes weren't keen to forget.
He liked Wild's Era, he decided. Especially the friends he had made while he was there.

Day In The Life: 1
Tumblr media
"Pa."
"Pa."
"Pa."
"Pa, wake up."
Link grumbled tiredly and rolled over, swatting idly at whatever or whoever was calling his name. He was too old for this shit, let him sleep in goddesses-dammit.
"Pa, Raven says his stomach feels bad."
Oh, fuck.
"I'm up, I'm up." Link sat up with a yawn, rubbing his face tiredly, looking over at Mason, who hovered at the edge of his bed. The boy looked exhausted and haggard, clearly not getting enough sleep himself.
"You go on back to bed, ok?" Link said with a gentle smile, ruffling his son's hair as he stood, eliciting a weak disgruntled sound from his eldest. "I'll handle whatever's wrong. Thanks for waking me."
"Ok, Pa." He replied tiredly, rubbing his eyes and turning to head back to his room. Link's smile relaxed into something more bittersweet, and he went to check on his youngest.
"Hey, kiddo. What's the matter?" Link asked gently as he leaned into Raven’s bedroom doorway. The young boy was sitting upright in bed, staring blankly at the wall, until he heard his father. Raven reached up immediately, making a grabbing motion towards his father. Link, pushover as he was, immediately went to his son's side and hoisted the 10 year old up into his arms.
"Mason said you ain't feeling too good. That true, Ven?" He asked, tone low and gentle as Raven curled into his hold. The boy nodded, sighing deeply, but didn't elaborate. There wasn't much Link could do off of so little information, so the guessing game began.
"Do you need water?" A head shake.
"Do you need food?" Another head shake.
"Are you gonna be sick?" Head shake again.
"...do you need to use the bathroom?"
That got a response, weak giggles and a head shake as Raven pushed his father's face away gently. Link chuckled deeply, shrugging.
"Hey now, I'm just trying to help." He said with a soft smirk. "Did you just need Pa to come hold you for a bit? Is that all?"
Raven hesitated, then nodded, hiding his face in Link's shoulder and sighing again. It was a weary, heavy sound. One Link wished his son would never make. One he wished he could have spared Raven from.
"Wanna sleep in Pa's bed tonight?" He asked gently, rocking Raven ever so slightly as he stood, ignoring the pain in his knee from the action. Raven nodded his agreement and clung to Link even after the two had laid down in the master bedroom and had pulled the covers up.
There was no checking for monsters under the bed tonight because Papa would protect him, Raven was sure. And for Link, his sleep was easy and deep, the first good sleep he'd had in a while.
When he woke, he didn't even mind that Mason and Eden had found their way to his bed sometime in the night. He was content to lay there, basking in the calm morning sun, content as his wife's side of the bed wasn't empty as it had been for a long time.

Last August I was spiritually fed into a wood chipper and converted into a fine red mist of viscera had a lot of life stuff happen. This week I have coalesced into something resembling corporeality and am back to (semi-)regularly updating.
As a celebration, please enjoy a short chapter of existential Bachelor suffering 💜

Merry christmas, @minninugget!!
I got to take part in @love-and-lore's Christmas Gift exchange, and I got to create this piece and moodboard for the lovely @minninugget! Merry christmas, I hope you enjoy, Nuggie!
Tumblr media
You wouldn’t hear the door click shut if you didn’t know to listen.
With the sun disappearing well before dinner, the lights from the Christmas tree had been twinkling for hours. But the magic was absolutely still there.
You knew of Christmas magic of course, it hadn’t died in you when you grew up. But this year...your heart flutters with giddiness you haven’t known since you were a child. The cookies and milk had been laid by Mara right before bed. In truth, it was so fresh, the condensation had barely gotten the chance to leave a ring, but you take a sip anyway. Much like her dad, when she’s out for the night, she’s out.
“Santa already dipping into the snacks?” Katsuki asks as he passes, his hand tracing your waist as he does.
“’fraid so, he’s quick,” you kiss his cheek as he bites into one of the cookies beside your half drunk glass of milk.
While he works on taking a careful bite out of one of the cookies (and taking the bite of the carrot since he lost at Rock Paper Scissors), you dip into the back of a wardrobe. Mara’s presents from you and Katsuki had decorated the treeskirt since earlier today, but her Santa presents, of course, remained hidden. Her uncle Kiri’s present was set right beside the pile, though his purple shiny wrapping paper was a bit less...tidy than your blue and silver.
His real gift to her, however, is on your husband’s feet. Katsuki stands by the fireplace, staring at the boots as if they’re singeing his socks. You’re beside him soon enough to hear the late mutter of “fuckin’ massive feet...” under his breath. He takes the Santa presents from your hands and you hold a bag of fake snow that you pray will come up as easy tomorrow as it will spread.
“Ready?”
He nods. Both feet together, scatter some snow. Then one foot at a time, the boots are sprinkled, until a trail of footprints leaves the fireplace, goes to the tree, and ends at the snacks.
“The snow would surely be off of him by then,” you both reason.
The stage is set, and the pair of you turn off the tree lights and make your way upstairs and into your shared bedroom.
Even if Mara sleeps sound, Christmas is a child’s most excited night. As you and Katsuki slip under the covers and scroll through socials, a tiny knock breaks the silence.
“You okay, honey?” you call.
Her hair is the same bright blonde as Katsuki’s, though not nearly as messy, and even in the dark, it’s easy to spot. She shuffles into the room and crawls up the bed, glancing behind her like she’s about to tell a secret.
“Are you sure he’s coming?” she whispers.
“Of course, he is, baby!” Katsuki finishes tapping on his phone, and lifts her until she’s settled between both of you.
“Why wouldn’t he?” he asks, tone soft.
She shrugs, and looks up at him like he holds the world above him.
“Let’s see; have you been naughty?”
She thinks for a moment, then shakes her head.
“And you left out milk and cookies?”
She nods.
“And a carrot?”
She nods again.
“Then I don’t see why he wouldn’t come,” Katsuki puts his finger to his chin in faux thought, “Unless you have secretly been naughty?”
“No!” She whines, with a pout that would stop traffic.
“I don’t know, can we trust her?” he glances at you, mischief dancing in his eyes.
“Oh I’m not so sure,” you reply, eyeing her.
“No I haven’t!” she can tell you’re both up to something – much too clever for her little age – but she can’t hide it.
“I think we have to do it, hon”.
You nod back.
“What?” Mara asks, but Katsuki doesn’t answer, instead he leans forward and whispers, “tickle torture”.
She squeals before he even tickles her, and you grab your phone to record the scene. But that’s not all.
A sudden set of thumps above you startle Mara to stillness, and Katsuki follows suit. The pair stare up at the ceiling as footsteps cross the roof and you frantically whisper, “He must think we’re asleep! Quick, under the covers!” The footsteps and bells tinkle through each moment, and Mara stares up with all the wonder in the world. So much that you almost believe it.
And it’s right there she dozes off, not long after “Santa’s” footsteps have left.
___
It’s the sunlight trickling over the sheets that wakes you, and Mara shuffles at the same moment you do. As sleep lets its weary fingers fall from her eyes, she remembers the bells and the footsteps and gasps, right as she grabs your hand and tugs until you follow her from the bedroom. Katsuki follows, and the pair of you hold back as Mara takes in the snowy footsteps and the bites in the cookie. She whirls around, excitement finally reaching bubbling point as she squeals and runs to the tree to see the specially decorated Santa presents. Katsuki kisses your cheek as he starts breakfast nearby, and you watch as Mara opens each one carefully, though she saves the Santa ones for last.
___
With the excitement of the morning, the joy of dinner with family and friends, the comfort of a movie, Mara is taken to bed not long after the credits roll. Everyone had left as the movie ended, though Kiri sits nearby, ready for his Christmas drink with Katsuki. She clings tight to her new plushie, even as her eyes close while she’s in Katsuki’s arms. When they disappear, you lean forward and mutter; “You made a fantastic Santa”.

The party in the tavern was loud.
The companions had gathered together to celebrate the new year, staying up late and enjoying eachothers company, but as the hour of the new year drew closer, one party member in particular found it weighing heavily in their heart.
Damrus leaned against the railing of the back porch of the tavern, looking up at the stars passively. The sounds of merriment in the doorway behind him were but background noise to his thoughts.
"Beautiful night for stargazing, isn't it?" Dameus felt a hand on his head and sighed as he leaned into Callahan's touch. His tail swung back to wrap around his brother's, and the elder tiefling responded in kind.
"What's going on in that brain of yours?" Callahan asked, flicking the pale tiefling's forehead gently and chuckling when Damrus wrinkled his nose. Damrus shrugged and snuggled into Callahan's side.
"Where do you think Nana and Gigi are?" He asked gently, barely a whisper in the night. Callahan frowned in thought, wrapping an arm around his brother and resting his chin on Damrus's head.
"I think," he said gently, "that they are staring up at the stars, just like you, and thinking about the little tiefling boy they raised, wondering how he's doing and loving him even now."
Damrus hummed in response, shutting his eyes to more clearly envision his adoptive parents' faces.
"We never celebrated the new year when I was younger." Damrus said after a moment of silence, listening to the revelry inside the tavern. "It seems like a strange thing to celebrate. Losing time, a year gone by. Why is that happy?"
The elder of the two seemed to be stumped. Callahan remained silent for a while, lost in thought, and Damrus entertained the thought that he had finally broken his brother.
"Well," the bard began, "I don't think it's to celebrate the passing of time, but what we did in that time. We made friends, shared adventures, did good and bad things, and made memories. I think New years celebration is to remember what we did, and look forward to what we will do together." He looked down at Damrus. "Did that make sense or am I speaking nonsense again?"
"Nonsense, definitely." The healer giggled. The two laughed a bit, then fell into a comfortable silence once more.
"Do..." Damrus struggled to ask his next question. "Do you ever worry about what comes next? About what may happen to us in the future?"
Damrus startled a bit when Callahan laughed again, looking at his brother in confusion.
"Sorry, sorry, that was bad. I'm sorry." The man tried to get control of his mirth, shaking his head. "Kiddo, I worry about that all the time, not just New years."
"Oh." Damrus said softly. He supposed that was fair, Callahan had been responsible for him and Clem for a while now. It made sense that he would worry over their future well-being. "H-how do you deal with it? The stress?"
Callahan was silent again, one hand played with his earrings idly. "I... I'm not fully sure myself. But, I do know that, even if there is danger and struggle around the corner, at least we're all together, right?"
As they listened to the excited count down inside, Damrus decided Callahan was right. The future may be scary and hard and new, but he had a future with people he loved and cared for in it. He would be ok.
"You should go find Riake." Damus said with a teasing look, mood lifted. "Isn't it common practice to kiss someone you love as the clock strikes midnight?"
Callahan huffed, rolling his eyes. "I've never been one for tradition." And, as the clock struck midnight, his older brother placed a soft kiss on the crown of Damrus's head, between his horns, and smiled.
"Happy New Year, kiddo." He chuckled, ruffling Damrus's hair and heading inside to join the celebration again. Damrus blinked, momentarily stunned, then shook his head and followed after his brother.
"Hey! That's no fair, you jerk! Hair is off-limits!"
One minute in, and the brothers were already fighting again.
The new year was looking bright.

“Is…Is he ok?” Legend asked, raising an eyebrow as Silas patted Russo on the back gently. Russo had his face hidden in his hands, and although he was silent, the shaking of his shoulders told Legend the young man was either laughing or crying.
“I have no idea.” Silas said with brutal honesty. “Either he has a deep emotional attachment to whatever he's crying about, or he's upset about forgetting the word. Either way, he is in great distress, as you can see.”
“It's so cute, how could I forget?” The blonde sobbed, his words barely audible. Legend and Silas exchanged bemused looks, and Legend sat at the table across from them.
“So,” he started, clearing his throat, “can he explain what it is?”
“He's tried, but all I can get is that it's sometimes green but also not, and it's hard to catch. So that narrows it down to every single reptile, amphibian, and insect in existence.” Silas sighed. Legend hummed in thought, resting his head in his hands and staring off into nothing. The two sat there as Russo cried.
“I-it…it j-jumps?” Russo offered after a bit, eyes red, but tears stopped for now. Legend and Silas perked up.
“Grasshopper? Cricket? Jumping Spider?” Silas tried.
“A frog?” Legend suggested, and Russo promptly burst into tears again.
“H-h-how c-could I hic forget a f-frog!” the prince whined, burying his face in his arms again. Silas shook his head with a smile.
“It's ok, bud. Happens to the best of us.” The three sat in silence again, this time more of a comforting quiet than a confused one, when Legend chose to speak up again.
“...we should probably get him to bed. He seems tired to me.” Silas nodded.
“Good idea. I don't think I've ever seen him this emotional.” The two helped Russo up, his quiet sobbing weakening to the occasional sniffle, and helped him to bed. Legend hoped this wouldn't be a common occurrence. He may be a veteran explorer, but even he didn't know or remember the words for everything.

Tricks for Treats
Having dogs as friends was, for lack of a better term, weird. Not a bad weird, far from it, but definitely weird.
Twilight/Wolfie always enjoyed going to Wild's Hyrule and running into Dodge and Winnie at the stables. Apparently, their person traveled a lot, and they had a lot of stories to share. The three, or two, as Winnie often got distracted, enjoyed exchanging taled by the stable fire late at night while the others were asleep.
On one such night, while Twilight was recounting an odd encounter with a mouse to Dodge, Winnie abruptly interrupted with a fascinating question.
"Do you do tricks?"
"Do I what?" Twi asked, baffled by the question. They had had to explain to Winnie multiple times that he was not, in fact, a dog, but that apparently made no difference to the pup.
"You know, shake, down, roll over? Do you do that?" She asked, tilting her head to the side and blinking owlishly. Dodge groaned and rolled his eyes, muttering something that sounded suspiciously like 'not again' to himself. Twilight wasn't sure how to explain to Winnie that he was not actually a wolf, so he settled for an easier explanation.
"No. I was never taught any." He lied fluently. What he wasn't expecting was for Winnie to look utterly unimpressed.
"Taught? You have to be taught? I just do a bunch of them and get food." She said, sounding mildly disappointed.
"Not everyone is as food motivated as you are, Winnie." Dodge spoke up, giving her a look that screamed 'drop the subject'. Clearly this was an old conversation topic for the two dogs.
"It's really not that hard. Anyone with a brain can do it." Winnie carried on. "All you have to do it pick up a trick, and the people give you treats. Simple as that!"
"Ah, I see. You're very clever, Winnie. But i don't beg." Twilight said, holding himself a little higher as he said that. Twilight rarely asked for help, and he definitely wouldn't beg.
"Sometimes I just do them all at once." Winnie mused. "That gets you the same number of treats as one trick, but then I don't have to wait for them to tell me what to do."
"I think it's time for bed, Winnie." Dodge chuckled, showing a rare moment of tenderness towards the younger dog. After some moaning and belly-aching about the suggestion, Winnie trotted into the stable to sleep with her person, leaving Dodge and Twilight by the fire.
"She's not wrong, you know." Dodge said eventually. "It never hurts to practice your begging skills." It was said lightheartedly. However, the older dog also sounded like he was making a point.
"I don't beg. Never have, never will." Twilight replied with a huff. On the surface, his words sounded like straight hubris. Simply pride. However, they had more meaning. Begging was a sign of weakness, both as Wolfie and as Twilight. His pride wouldn't allow any begging or asking for help. He was strong, and the others needed him to be strong.
Dodge hummed thoughtfully, letting the silence stretch for a bit before speaking again. "Maybe not. Maybe you won't. But maybe you will. Life's funny like that, and you seem like a man who does what's best for the pack."
"How can begging be what's best for the pack?" There it was again, that double meaning. Twilight felt ridiculous for asking Dodge, a dog, about this, but he was genuinely curious. How would asking for help be best for his pack? How would showing weakness benefit the other heros?
"Well, look at it this way," Dodge said gently, tone kind and understanding. "If you're hungry, and don't say anything about it, you stay hungry. If you are hungry, and beg for food, then you're not hungry anymore. Simple, right?" Twi cocked his head in confusion.
"Yes, and?"
"What use is a hungry dog to its pack?" Dodge asked. "He's desperate, hurting, weakened, and unpredictable. How is that good for his pack?"
Twilight considered this for a moment, begrudgingly coming to the conclusion that the dog would not be beneficial to the pack in that scenario. Dodge seemed to notice that realization.
"I'm not saying open up right away, pup. I'm just saying asking for help sometimes isn't a weakness. It can only make the pack stronger.
Oh...
Twilight realized that Dodge had seen through his thinly veiled questions the entire time, and what he had said was true. Asking for help would strengthen the group by covering individual weaknesses as a team.
"When did you get so smart, old timer?" Twilight found himself saying teasingly as Dodge got up to follow Winnie.
"I ain't smart, I just listen." The old dog chuckled, stretching with a yawn. "Gnight Kid, get some rest. You heroes don't get nearly enough sleep from what I've seen."
With that, Dodge walked off, leaving Twilight to wonder just how much the dog knew about him and the others.
Having dogs as friends was weird. Not a bad weird, but weird. They were oddly insightful and knew far more than they let on.

"Si......las.....sila...SILAS!"
The raven haired boy startled, standing straight and looking around for the source of the yelling. A hand waved in front of his face, and he flinched.
"Helloooooo? Hyrule to Lassie, where's your brain gone?" Silas turned to Wesley with an annoyed look.
"You're not letting that one go, huh?"
"Nnnnope!" The redhead laughed, eyes alight with mischief. Wesley pointed across the street towards the seamstress' shop. "Don't think I didn't see you, loverboy. You were making heart eyes and the lovely lady Lillian again." The words were said dramatically, and he threw a hand over his forehead and pretended to swoon.
"Shut up, idiot!" Silas hissed, shaking Wesley by his shoulders and casting a look further into the shop where his father was currently chatting with Wesley's father.
"Oh please, they're talking about the town gossip. They won't pay us any attention unless we spontaneously combust." Wesley rolled his eyes. "Even then, they'd probably just warn us not to set anything else on fire."
The two boys laughed at that, knowing their father's enjoyed this time they had to talk, evidenced by the fact Silas and Link had already been in the store for half an hour longer than necessary.
"Anyway, back to the matter at hand. A certain fine flower across the way?" Wesley teased, wiggling his eyebrows playfully. Silas shrugged and looked away, blushing slightly.
"It's nothing." He said, mood souring. "It's not like anything would come of it anyway."
Wesley was a jokester, that was for sure, but he was smarter than he let on. Silas was at his limit. He could see that, so a new plan for fun appeared in his mind. "Well, I just think that- OH MY HYLIA IS THAT MR. FELDING??"
Silas's head swung around, alert and looking for the mean old man, not noticing when Wesley opened the backdoor he had been standing near and releasing the beast.
Bree, a small, fluffy, horrifying little dog, tore out of the backroom, barking and snarling at patrons before running out of the store.
"BREE, NO!" Silas yelled, running out of the store after the small menace, trying to stop the little terror from biting any knights like last time. Wesley yelled a quick apology to his father and Mr. Link before chasing after his dog and best friend, laughing the whole way down the street.
The conversation about Silas's lady love was soon forgotten by the two, and they spent the rest of the day hunting the murderous cotton ball through the town. All according to Wesley's 'plan'.
