So CA3 is over. It went in a haze. Had a pretty nice time sitting in library and having discussions about art. Right. Before. The. Exam. Lol. Spent the rest of the day in a sort of resting phase. Cooked some cheese maggi with podi powder. Played Rusty Lake. Gotta start with serious work and work out tomorrow. And maybe start a 15 days workout thing to help me regularise it.

Concept Art Character Design Challenge: Final Fantasy- Jenova I couldn’t resist an opportunity like this, and it came at such a lucky time too! An artist friend of mine had just recently taught me the basics of digital painting- something I have been trying to get my head around for years. She taught me to section segments off and colour, tone, then add light in steps.  My issue over the years has been the fact that I wanted to shade and add light before the base colour phase was even complete! I really pushed myself with this design, as you can see from the sketchbook page, I couldn’t really fit the full design, so the first thing I wanted to do was spread her features out significantly more. After that I kept flipping the image in the line art phase to ensure my drawing wasn’t skewed, finally after all of that came the most time consuming segment- the toning. I really think my patience has paid off though! I have now captured one of my favourite childhood villains in my own way. There’s not much to it (read for process):

1) Collisions are done with AABB (just rectangle vs rectangle check) for every hitbox of the current animation frame against the enemy’s hurtboxes until there’s an intersection, same way normal 2D fighters do them. You don’t need to go crazy like Skullgirls hitboxes since that’ll take too much time to do for each animation

2) if there’s a collision, get the attack information (how much HP it takes, stun time, what kind of force to apply to the enemy to knock him away etc) 3) Apply hitstop for X amount of frames, attacks feel very empty without it. For strong attacks use screen shake but don’t overdo it. This is probably the most important part for making it feel good. 4) After hitstop is finished the enemy will move depending on the force you applied

Concept Art Udemy work: 2 point perspective piece Chrono Trigger: Robo 6 6 Hours into this and I’m feeling like it will draw to a close in the next 2/3 hours, it’s been a great way to learn more tonal skills, as well as playing with perspective. I might add a bit more contrast to Robo as I don’t really feel like he stands out at the moment- let’s see how I feel when I get the tonal work on the floor done, a light tone beneath him might help bring his features out :)
