I’ve been laying awake

In this hole cradling the engine

Of a war machine.

Realizing once again

How long it’s been

Since I’ve dreamed

Wrote

Spoke

About myself beyond

Mere parlor tricks

And gave a voice to the profoundly

Ignorant side of me.

The cold makes my cuts swell

The blood surge a seething heat,

I feel my old scars

And realize how accident prone I am.

How clumsy I am

Until the fire breaks out

And rounds slam bolts back

With tracers pointing white fingers

Into crawling hills with rivers of flesh

Scurrying to send you back into your hole.

I think of my wife

Then my cat

My bed

Waiting at home all together

Waiting to soak up my dreams

And I come to a divine truth

That they are the reason why I don’t dream

Unless I am out in the field.
