Seeking Star Sending Surprises!

The moment Charade catches word of a community gift-giving event, she gathers her team members and sits them down to eagerly explain the terms. Although Riddle initially refuses to participate, the other three plead and gradually wear him down. The very instant Riddle utters the word, "fine", Charade takes off at full speed, returning moments later with pencils and paper for the four of them.

It takes several days for everybody to be satisfied with their lists, but once they are, Charade collects them all to deliver to this mysterious Star Sender.

Charade’s wishes are written playfully (misspellings and all), with little doodles in the margins depicting each item on her list.

Party Trick

Almost all of Tricky’s letter is written in all caps, the graphite burnished deeply into the paper.

What follows is an incredibly long and absurd list of impossible-to-obtain items that includes famous works of art, government documents, and siege weaponry. However, at the very end is a footnote written in very small print, made deliberately easy to miss:

this list isn’t meant to be taken seriously. if you want to do something for me, please, get something for jack instead. you’d really make him smile. that’s all i want.

Riddle

Riddle’s printing has different consistencies throughout, with rather messy formatting; it’s as if he spent the longest on his list, adding and changing things on different days using different pencils. Still, the end result is legible, despite the corrections and scribbles.

Don’t feel obligated to get me anything from this list. I don’t know the limits on what’s acceptable to ask from a stranger. If you're so incensed, however, I want you to share something sentimental with me. ⁃ Something handmade. ⁃ Photos from a place you've traveled. ⁃ Your favourite recipe. ⁃ A copy of a poem, song, or other piece of writing you enjoy. ⁃ Something that represents your home. ⁃ Anything you can think of similar to the above. Thank you for your time and consideration.

The last few lines of Riddle's letter have been written over something else that he erased. Looking closely, it reads:

(( Whether you're reading this out of curiosity or because I'm your Star Sending recipient, hi there!! With four characters, I figured I'd leave a lot for you to choose from so you can do what's most comfortable for you. It's your choice if you want to take a more serious or silly approach!

Charade's list is the most straightforward, and depending on what you pick, can end up being lighthearted or sentimental! She'll be equally appreciative of any of her wishlist items, including the boxes :D

Blackjack and Tricky's lists are intertwined, and Jack's wishes are largely plot-relevant. If you're up for that, you're absolutely free to fulfill any of his wishlist items, but it's not a big deal if you don't (I have a contingency plan)! The one exception I have is if you decide to do the Tera Shard request, please keep the number low (pretty much no showing up with 30 or more Tera shards)!

Riddle's list leans more towards serious, but if you want to engage him in a silly way, please do! As a character, he takes himself more seriously than I tend to depict him, so it's up to you if you wanna play around with that or not!

Progress Report 2/27

Originally, I had been aiming for an early Q1 release of the Introductory chapter. As most of you know, I have been beset with delays in getting the UI/UX implemented. I have sat down with my UI designer and we came up with a delivery ultimatum that will give TCM the UI it deserves, ready to be handed off to a programmer for implementation and polishing. Because of this ultimatum, and because I want to give my programmer adequate time to work, I am pushing the release date of the Introductory chapter into Q2- the release date is slated for MAY 20.

What happened? Essentially, scope was misjudged and my designer was stretched thin between a myriad of other projects and IRL obligations. By December they were beginning to feel the effects of burnout and we agreed to reconvene in January. At this point, we discussed what we could do to mitigate scope creep and set a mutually-agreed upon final delivery date at the end of March, which leaves April and some of May for implementation, bug fixes, and Steam testing.

That sucks. It does a little but lo there is a silver lining! The intro has been delayed but that has not stopped me from proceeding with writing and coding further chapters and getting more art completed. This means there will be a few special occasions where all three characters will get a chapter update in the same month.

So, again, sorry for the push back but I want to avoid putting my contractors into crunch and still give myself ample time to bug test the finished product. Delays are the bane of my existence but we’re all human and sometimes it just is what it is. That being said, I’m very proud of how TCM is shaping up for its big Steam debut and your support in getting there has been completely indispensable.

The Beryl Coronet Part 1 - Notes!

I'm having a lazy Sunday morning so I'm going to luxuriously type out my thoughts while I'm reading today's letter! I'm especially excited because I don't think I've properly read this one.

I have however read this little nugget of detail because I tried to find any and all descriptions of Baker Street for a game I'm making (The Beekeeper's picnic, you can wishlist it on Steam if you like...)

In a different story it's described as having a bay window. Both bow windows and bay windows project from the exterior wall. Bow windows usually have more panes of glass to make a smooth outward curve.

Both are also fiendishly difficult to convey when you're working with 320x130 pixels.

“Holmes,” said I as I stood one morning in our bow-window looking down the street, “here is a madman coming along. It seems rather sad that his relatives should allow him to come out alone.”

Outdated attitudes towards mental health aside, I think it's sweet that Watson is able to see someone in distress at a distance and immediately find it sad nobody is looking out for him. His doctorly instincts are aroused!

Sherlock Holmes pushed him down into the easy-chair and, sitting beside him, patted his hand and chatted with him in the easy, soothing tones which he knew so well how to employ.

Likewise, Holmes is knows by now how to handle someone in distress. There's a really sweet illustration of this moment by Josef Friedrich

There has already been a mountain of discussion about coronets in the LfW server - what precisely it is, how the word is pronounced, the etymology...

I'd always thought a coronet was something like this - basically a tiara but a little more gender-neutral!

Turns out it's actually a small crown which has a top to it.

I really hope this is just lip service and he wouldn't have really done that. Please Mr Holder, don't lend clients your own money! I feel he's being set up here, either by the narrative or by this Mysterious Notable Man.

I determined, therefore, that for the next few days I would always carry the case backward and forward with me, so that it might never be really out of my reach.

I just want to sit all Sherlock Holmes characters down and give them a long lecture about how the most vulnerable time for any precious or valuable object is when it is in transit. Also the the bureau of your dressing-room is not actually more secure than a safe at London's second largest bank.

Another, Lucy Parr, the second waiting-maid, has only been in my service a few months.

She gets a name, and is therefore Suspicious.

I thought that first-cousin marriage was a bit of an eyebrow-raiser at this time even though it did happen sometimes.

Where are the jewels which you have stolen?’ “‘Stolen!’ he cried. “‘Yes, thief!’ I roared, shaking him by the shoulder. “‘There are none missing. There cannot be any missing,’ said he.

Ok, I think that was actually a "Stolen?!" and he's as surprised as anyone. The beryls were already gone by the time he got there. I'm sure Lucy's disappearance has something to do with it!

at the sight of the coronet and of Arthur's face, she read the whole story and, with a scream, fell down senseless on the ground.

I feel bad for laughing at this.

I am enjoying this one SO MUCH so far! The missing item genre of Sherlock Holmes story is one of my favorites, and so far we've had a really tense tragic narrative with lots of complexity.

I am a little worried that this story isn't a well known one and so perhaps it's a bit of a flop towards the end - but who knows, perhaps it's appropriately a hidden gem!

One of the things I really enjoy about Din Djarin as a character is the layers. And I mean that both literally (the victorian ankle kink is real) and figuratively.

This is a guy who can be implacable, even brutal, when he’s bounty hunting. But even at the beginning, he seems to have a preference to bring bounties in alive when possible. Initially, he was pretty inclined to murder the Jawa that ransacked his ship, but once Kuiil pushed him to make a deal instead, he started using that very currency as his primary method. Even at times when he really didn’t have to, like fighting a krayt dragon.

This is a guy who can be snarky and curt when he meets someone on the job, or in a combat-likely situation, but once pushed out of his comfort zone, turns awkward and even shy. The best example of this is on Sorgan, with Omera, when the scary mercenary turns skittish animal, and kind of blurts out his tragic backstory as soon as someone shows a hint of interest.

And then there’s the number of times that the poor guy gets stabbed in the back, manipulated into something he doesn’t really want to do, or has even friendly allies up and change the terms of their team up on him. And he still ends up going along with it. After complaining and protest, but still. I’ve joked that he can’t win an argument with a baby, but let’s be real here, the baby is pretty fucking persuasive. This is however a guy who gets bullied by his mechanic to carry a frog person that she doesn’t even know to a neighboring system. And then manages to get bullied by said frog person along the way. And the frog person doesn’t even speak Basic!

He’s a literal knight in shining armor who will blow up a krayt dragon from inside its stomach and he’s bullied by pretty much everyone he meets, and it’s hilarious every single time.

He sleeps in full armor, in a cupboard in the space opera equivalent of a 1982 Honda Civic. He cauterizes wounds by campfire. He spends a whole lot of time hanging out in a forge, apparently having traumatic flashbacks at the banging noise. This man might well be Greef Karga’s highest performing hunter, but he’s also a walking trainwreck and I love it.

He won’t remove his helmet to save his own life (though he will for his kid) but still keeps a reasonably well groomed mustache. Does he even own a mirror? Or does he shave by reflection in his own helmet? I love that Din is so weird that this is a legitimate question.

He’s a solitary man with no name and the uptight governess who protects her kid with a rifle, and each season ends with him basically raising an army of friends he met along the way. (My wishlist item is that next year, Grogu gets to raise the army to save him instead. That and a nude bathing scene in the living waters of Mandalore. But I feel like one is more likely than the other.)

I never would have thought that a Star Wars character could surpass Luke Skywalker in my heart, but Din Djarin might well have been created in a lab to deliberately push every one of my fannish buttons, and I love him for it.

On Chapter Posts (and What Comes After)

Just a heads-up to everyone that, at least for the time being, I’m putting the chapter posts on moratorium. I’ve been far more critical than not for months on end, and while I do get some satisfaction out of the venting, it’s just gotten more mentally demanding than it’s worth. Compliments are easy and fun to write! I always end up feeling like I have to do more writing to support negativity, however, providing enough explanation to support my complaints, and often going even further to anticipate and preemptively counter responses.

That big slab of nitpicking sits at the top of my to-do list week-in and week-out, a responsibility to keep on top of lest I fall behind, pushing answering asks and working on other projects behind it, and with the chapters of late having become incredibly demotivating, not getting them done means I get nothing done. It certainly doesn’t help that Horikoshi’s writing has become so dependent on fake-outs, asspulls, retcons, and purposefully misleading cliffhangers, all of which make it unrewarding in the extreme to put effort and thought into meaningful analysis on a chapter-by-chapter basis.

I apologize to anyone who was really enjoying them—I’ve had a number of people tell me they love my meticulous breakdowns, and I’m forever grateful that my anal-retentiveness has found some like minds! That said, please don’t fear that I’m out of the BNHA analysis game entirely! I’d just rather focus my attention on larger-scale material, subjects that require analyzing the work as a whole, rather than the week-to-week grind.

First up will be clearing out my ask backlog—not, I think, a terribly burdensome prospect this time—as well as give the Mina fan the answer I promised them months ago to their last reply in our series of lengthy exchanges about Chapter 383.

Below the jump, I've compiled a list of my projects, meta and fanfic alike. Feel free to skim through if you’re interested in what the chapter posts have been keeping me away from!

Meta Projects:

An absolutely massive documentation of heteromorphobia in the main series and Vigilantes that I’ve been erratically working on since March of last year—41 pages and I’m still only at the beginning of the war arc! I’ve been trying to decide if I want to just start posting this in arc-length breakdowns or finish the whole thing first for optimal organization and presentation, though I suppose I could do the former on tumblr and the latter on AO3. Anyone have a preference?

The much-delayed essay laying out the evidence for the possession plot with AFO and Shigaraki not being the originally intended endgame for those characters, at least not in the form it wound up taking. Currently six pages, this one is still mostly bullet points; it also hasn’t been updated to reflect some of the more recent wild inconsistencies. I’d like to give the series time to wrap up whatever it’s going to do with AFO before I publish this one, in case of eleventh hour reveals, but there’s certainly a lot of draft work I could be doing in the meantime.

Some follow-up/companion pieces to my MVA In Memoriam series. I’d like to go back to the PLF Spotting posts, which were intended to run through the anime’s treatment of the PLF in the war arc, and I’ve also been compiling points for a schadenfreude-y post on the dazzling variety of ways the anime’s butchering of MVA has complicated its own future as an adaptation. This would cover things like the anime having to hastily jam in the CRC scene as a flashback because, whoops, it turns out heteromorphobia is going to play a major role in the climax, or the whole-hog deletion of Curious talking about quirk counseling, given that Horikoshi would later directly depict how said counseling exacerbated the psychological abuse Toga was already facing from her parents.

An essay I promised an anon last year about my perception of the MLA’s ideology. I’m salty about what the lazy, rushed writing in the final arc has reduced my favorite villain group in the manga to, however, so at this point, I want to do two things with this piece. First, analyze why the MLA's current portrayal is so problematic*—what they say doesn’t even match up with who they are and how they act now, much less in their MVA portrayal! Second, discuss how I write them, extrapolating from the non-caricatured aspects of their portrayal with the intent of offering a version of the MLA who are still extremist, cultish villains but who are allowed to have some proper nuance, and an ideology that’s actually consistent with their history, their tactics, and their MVA-era characterization.

A number of shorter fancies and trifles that I’ve thought about and taken a few notes on, but have never gotten around to fully drafting: o A post on how heroes and villains respectively engage with dramatic unmaskings. o A post on directionality of movement in visual media, highlighting some particularly interesting examples in BNHA to discuss what those examples indicate about the characters’ mentalities and the narrative’s silent, implicit judgement thereof. o A post on how frustrating it’s been to see all of Toga’s powers and abilities get retroactively leashed to—and limited by—her girly love-love emotions. o A post on the chronic underestimation of Shigaraki Tomura and the woes it consistently leads to. o A post or two analyzing the final beats of each chapter in the War Arcs with the aim of critiquing the way the series undermines the threat presented by the villains during said arcs.

Fanfic Projects:

On the fanfic side, it’s been frustrating me for months now that I haven’t written a substantial piece of non-prompt-driven fanfic for BNHA since January of last year, and even that's being generous with the word "substantial." Before that, I'd have to go all the way back to 2020 to find a non-prompt-based fic with a distinct beginning/middle/end. Suffice to say I’ve got lots of projects on that front!

While the rest of these are all BNHA fic, I do have a Gundam IBO fic I'm, like, two-thirds finished with the final chapter of that I badly want to finally, finally finish. It's basically down to an awkward conversation or two and a pair of wedding vows I've consigned myself to writing by virtue of drawing attention to them in the preceding chapters, RIP.

The perpetually languishing Obon fic, in which Re-Destro has a lot of feelings he is taking care not to examine too closely about his ancestors. Six thousand words and not even halfway finished.

The self-indulgent ShigRD mermaid fic, which has a number of cheerleaders in my friend circle and also my id.

Finish the MLA May AUs.

I'd like to circle back and write something for those last three days of Spinaraki Week Level 3 I never got to.

Brainstorming two distinct massive fix-it fic AUs I would at least like to draft some solid outlines for, even as it's unlikely I'll ever have the patience to write all the scenes about the kids they'd require. o "Forward Different" (the current name on the OneNote tab) would start from the first war arc, being faithful to the canon up to that point, but with major and minor changes that ripple outward to take the story farther and farther from canon the longer it progresses. (In that story: the MLA not folding like a bad hand in the raids, a Lady Nagant who's true to her professed hatred of empty platitudes, OFA being less of a perfectly good pushover, etc.) o "Backward Different" would also start from the first war arc, but things would drastically diverge almost immediately because of a number of strategically placed changes to prior events and character motivations; these would be wildcards to be uncovered or deduced as the story progresses. (In that story: Aoyama was revealed as the traitor all the way back at the training camp, cast members who actually matter turn out to be MLA, OFA is less of a perfectly good pushover, etc.)

I also have a number of deeply backburnery ideas, still more in the category of "idea" than project, that I could to move to more active project status. o The one where my might-as-well-call-them-my-MLA-fancharacter has to team up with Toga post-Jakku and travel across a rapidly unraveling Japan in order to meet back up safely with their allies. o The one where I use an OC detective to examine the official response to the Shimura massacre, and how it got squashed. o The Kotarou Lives AU, in which Kotarou survives said massacre. Look, gang, I just really want to write about AFO gleefully and aggressively coming on to Shimura Nana's deliciously bitter, traumatized, handsome, ignorant son. I also really like my idea for a lead-in/stinger on this one. o The one where Geten busts himself and his allies out of prison, be it the canon-verse story with his now-confirmed cell neighbor Mr. Compress or the teenaged AU where he gets thrown in the same high-security juvie Mustard is in.

And that's about all I can dig up out of my notes at the moment. Let me know if there's anything you guys are particularly interested in, though priority is likely to go to shorter or more fully developed projects. Thanks for reading!

Hi there, mod team, and thanks for your hard work in organizing this event! Kirby’s kind of a new fandom for me, but I’ve been getting super into it, and itching for an excuse to dabble more. I have a few questions, if you don’t mind? I’ve done a number of exchanges over the years, and there are a few things in your rule set I’d appreciate some clarification on—even if it’s just to declare, “Assume Good Faith,” and go from there!

Firstly, if I want to participate as only a writer, do I need to provide a link to examples of my writing for the Portfolio question on the sign-up? I would assume so, as the rules elsewhere say that writing and art are both allowed, but the rules seem to focus mostly on art, particularly in the Portfolio section.

Relatedly, if the poll option for matching participants by skill level wins, will writing also be privately assigned a technical skill ranking to help with matching? Since the rankings will be private, is there any plan to address what to do in case someone with, say, a high writing ranking but a low art ranking is matched to someone with the expectation that they’ll be doing fic but they decide they want to try doing art instead?

Secondly, can you elaborate on specifically how you’ll be applying the rule against romantic content between adults and minors? Read-as-written, I can see at least three different ways it could be interpreted, so some clarification would be much appreciated!

Is character maturity determined by canon? If so, which canon(s)? If multiple forms of canon are accepted, is it okay to request ships that might be okay in one canon but not in another?

Is character maturity determined by the mods? If so, can you share which characters you’ll be considering as minors versus which will be considered adults?

Is character maturity determined by individual participants? If so, does that mean that any ship is alright as long as the characters involved are both depicted as being on the same side of the minor/adult line, but determining where that line falls is left to the judgement of the individual participants, in accordance with their wishlists/blacklists?

Hey! Super appreciate how nice you are. I hope you enjoy this fandom, first of all. It's a very comfortable one to be in, in my opinion 🥰

I apologize the rules and otherwise are biased towards visual artists! As you'll soon see in my answers here, in my experience with hosting events, the more details you specify for people to follow, the more confusing it gets and the less people follow any of the rules in the first place. I understand too many rules and guidelines is overwhelming, so it was important to me to keep things curt in the initial posts. That means guidelines for writers, and age specifications, got cut a little because it applies to very little people in the first place. I realize that's disrespectful to other types of artists participating in our event though, so I added onto the rules post and I'll try to elaborate more here.

Answering your questions proper now: yes, please include a portfolio even if you're a writer! I understand the length of a piece can vary a lot, as does the amount of effort you put into a writing piece does not necessarily equal how "finished" you think it is, so writing portfolios don't need to follow the "at least three finished pieces" rule. Just include whatever you have, with showing one piece minimum, and at least one piece out of however many you choose to link must have at least 1200 words, since that's the minimum requirement for our event.

Writing will be its own category, rather than using the 5-point ranking scale, if that option on the poll wins. This is because making wishlists and blacklists work in a smaller pool of people (the people who stated they are okay with receiving writing as a gift) is quite difficult. You bring up a good point with the conflicting skills in differing arts though! Now that you mention it, multiple people who stated they could gift multiple arts only put drawings in their portfolio (no one has to change that by the way, if you're reading this and panicking). In that case, we might just assign them to someone who only wants to receive drawings to get rid of that variable all together. Again, due to the very low amount of writers/other artists participating in the first place, those will be assigned on a case-by-case basis. I will say we will follow what's in people's portfolios first and foremost though. We won't go and personally hunt down someone's other art work if they didn't list it. If someone stated they could gift both writing and drawings, but only showed drawings in their portfolio, mods will giving them a point ranking and be running under the assumption they'll be gifting drawings, while keeping the "writing" part in the back of our minds.

Onto your second question: I can also see three different ways that could be interpreted 😆 I tried to purposely keep it vague. You hit the nail on the head with "assume good faith". Stating that in the first place was mostly to scare away any true... questionable people rather than something I expected to enforce. From a cursory glance at people's wishlists so far, yep, there's either none or maybe one ship that could be considered that in anyone's canon on anyone's list, so I don't feel the need to set out guidelines for it. If you, or anyone, is really concerned about a ship you'd like to request being seen that way, I'd recommend thinking about and following the general fandom's view on things (ex: Kirby being seen as a child in any canon). Us mods wouldn't step in if you were to, for example, request Magolor/Kirby, because you could interpret those two to be in the same age range and we will assume good faith, but most people wouldn't be comfortable fulfilling that request. The same goes for any sort of non-adult/minor controversial ship too, really, but we don't have any hard-set rules on this.

Wishlist Example No.1

This is a wishlist example using the cast of @ask-shiny-umbreon. It stays to the template, with additional character flair! Info on how to fill wishlists will come in the following days.

BREAKDOWN:

Keeps within the “Five item limit per character rule”

Additional character dialogue indicates the character’s approach to their respective wishlists, possibly helping the Sender understand the characters wants more.

Requests are straightforward, material, and if vague, clarified in OOC notes.

OOC NOTES

Feel free to get silly with completing any of these, I won’t be rejected! Other than that they’re all free game, and if you’d like, you can go off script. Twilight’s is purposefully vague sometimes, just for the comedy of another character having to decipher what she’s talking about. If you want the correct answers, number 1 is a lantern, and number 3 is a pillow (plushies also will make her very happy!). She’ll be pretty gullible about what “treasure” could be, since she’s still new to a lot of things.

I have a theory about how we can still win and its all because Ashiok, nightmare Enby little shit (affectionate), decided to mess with Elesh Norn for shits and giggles.

Also, apologies for not referring to a specific character by name. This is probably going to be long and I don’t want to type it twice since he is banned from showing up in Tumblr tags.

As a huge fan of everyone’s favorite leonin planeswalker and his friendship with Elspeth, I was of course devastated when it was revealed that he would be the next compleated planeswalker. Narratively, I agree it makes sense for this to happen to the point I even called way back when he showed up in New Capenna’s story through flashback. I also feel if you were trying to strike at the heart of the planeswalkers you want to compleat/purge, there was not a better choice as he is friends with a good number of planeswalkers including Elesh Norn’s newest fixation, Elspeth Tirel.

However, those bonds maybe the catalyst towards driving our boy towards Urabrask and his revolution. While that was always on my wishlist for how this New Phyrexia arc could go, imagine my surprise when we got this from WOTC in their “The Legends You’ll Find In Dominaria United” article.

Normally, Phyrexians are 100% down to compleat everyone unless they fight back so hard that death happens and death isn’t even an obstacle for this process. So this motivation or even his friends being horrified by this new desire wouldn’t be a catalyst that could drive him to questioning Elesh Norn. HOWEVER, there is now one big exception to compleat everyone and that is Elspeth Tirel.

In the story, “A Garden of Flesh”, Elesh Norn has the vision of the glistening oil within her failing to compleat a human woman and spreading an infestation of flesh across the Fair Basilica. This turns out to be a nightmare created by Ashiok who sought out Elesh Norn after seeing the Phyrexians in Elspeth’s nightmares as they tormented her on Theros. They taunt Elesh Norn with how she had failed to contain Elspeth before awakening an obsession in Elesh Norn to destroy this human woman in order to kill the self doubt that the vision brought to the surface.

With how much Elspeth means to our favorite leonin planeswalker, I imagine this would put him at odds with Elesh Norn’s destroy Elspeth on sight policy. I also imagine what we could get is Elesh Norn and Elspeth coming face to face in combat, Elesh Norn getting the upper hand and trying to kill Elspeth outright which would led to him interceding. While I don’t think he’d be 100% himself at this point, I could see it being the catalyst that awakens something more in him that would suddenly make him an enemy to Elesh Norn.

Who would take him in at that point and could use help in inciting a revolution? Our red aligned Praetor, Urabrask, of course! Better yet, our favorite Leonin planewalker is experienced in helping revolutions and strengthens those who he fights with!

Finally, the last thread that may come into play, Tamiyo and our favorite leonin planeswalker, are friends from before their compleation. A fact they touched upon during the Dominaria United Story so they wanted to remind people of this. I think if anyone has a chance to convince Tamiyo that the other Praetors are bad for their new family/pride, our favorite leonin planeswalker stands the best chance of either doing so or awakening some doubt that could be used to help someone else reach her in the future, perhaps her son, Nashi?

TLDR: Ashiok going to mess around with Elesh Norn, making her obsessed with Elspeth to the point that Elesh Norn wants to kill her instead of compleating her could be the catalyst for how the Phyrexian Planeswalkers regain their sense of self and join Urabrask to fight for their new family and old friends thus helping to save the multiverse.

You said that you'd love to see changes made to PD. I always love reading your takes/metas (still have to go back and read some of those but I've got summer break approaching!) Any chance you'd write out your "PD wishlist"?

Thank you, that's so lovely of you to say!! 💖 And I am more than happy to write out my pd wish list. I've been so excited to get to this all day-- probably would've answered sooner but my aunt visited in the time I usually have for my ask answering time.

Firstly: the number one thing I want to see is Kim, Kev and Adam actually becoming detectives. Especially Kim and Kev, not that Adam doesn't equally deserve it, but because he's the one I think everything about his character has said would be more than happy to remain in the officer rank, as long as he's in the unit. (He loves the work they do, so naturally if he had to leave, he'd probably become a detective so he could get a similar position elsewhere).

But that's less of a change and more an overdue plotline 🙃 nevertheless I had to mention it, before going on to the more maybe fundamental changes on my wishlist.

I'd love patrol to return. Getting rid of patrol is the one of the biggest fundamental problems that's happened to the show, and is one of the factors that lead to the unit becoming more insular. With this change, it would reintroduce back easier a plots and b plots and less tunnel vision on one character and would be a good way to introduce new, young characters without having to add young just graduated officers which imo only properly worked with Adam, as much as I liked Rojas and like Torres.

Plus it would mean more substantial Trudy scenes, which is always a plus. My wish for this would probably have the patrol storylines have a lesser focus then they did originally because the show has developed over the years, but even in a lesser degree it is still so very needed. And there's a few different ways they could reintroduce patrol, and how they could do it, which would also help keep the show fresh.

Similarly, I want more unit members, perhaps more than patrol. I would love there to be a new, but established older detective (younger than Voight but a few years older than the rest probably) because the unit really misses that intergenerational mix. And being another parent would be good. Preferably I'd maybe want two new unit members, a more established one and a younger but not just graduated one. (Especially because I think Torres needs someone in his age bracket to bounce off). But I'd settle for just the older one.

Multi episode long cases. Not like a season arc long one, but a case that is the heart of the plot for three episodes. I think that would be really interesting, give new life to the show, and could even be done with character centric episodes still-- which honestly would be a good move, because then it'd feel less parted between the team because they all would have a role. Maybe two of these kinds of stuff per season, one in part A, one in part B.

Low stakes episodes, at least once a season. There's a way to make these low stakes episodes just as entertaining and gripping, but not be in such high drama.

Similarly, a bit more humour again. Especially with the heavy focus on character centric episodes, a bit of levity would help bring it all together and feel less like a chore of an emotional rollercoaster.

I hesitate to say this, because I don't know if necessarily I trust the writers to do it well or in a way I'd like and it's probably one of those things that is better just imagining yourself, but a bit more on the background of characters. I really want to know more about Trudy in her younger years and it would be a great way to utilize her.

I also would love to see more about Kim's background but I have such extensive headcanons and I don't know if I'd trust the writers to actually do her justice. Definitely didn't the last couple of seasons, but maybe with Sigan I might trust the writers more and this would be a more definite thing on my wish list.

More of the team, together. Simply just that. We got a little more this season, but this is a change I'd make to pd. Especially if I added more members and patrol, as they'd be more dynamics to work with.

Kevin getting an actual healthy relationship. Yet again, things have improved slightly as we've gotten to see landlord!kev and Kev rebonding with his father this season and not just being cpd's black poster child.

But I crave him actually having a romance-- outside of work. All romances, especially if they don't add more members/patrol, should be outside of work from now on with Kev and Torres. Tbh my change there romance wise would be having Kev meet a social worker and falling in love but that's just my hc over these past years.

More season long over arching plots. Obviously we got a somewhat return to that this season, with the chief's son and then the Beck's but I definitely still count this a change on my wish list because we haven't gotten to the point I would like. This also goes in a bit with what I was saying about the three episode long cases, because if done well, a season arc could really help make the unit feel like the family they did once feel like and give a consistency within the more character centric episodes, even if I'd get rid of those.

This is less a change and more a want, in a way even more a want and less a change then burzekwater making detective, because there's nothing to say this won't be on the cards. But I'd like to see Burzek getting engaged again, and then having that wedding they've always wanted. I think emotionally and maturity wise they're at that point now, and I'd love to see it.

That's it for now. It's the main things that I'd love to change, and also all I can remember at this point. I know there's some more little changes that's on my wish list but unfortunately I can't remember them exactly right now, but these are really my main points of how I'd change and improve PD for the better. I might add to this if I remember others though.

Just for funsies, and because literally nobody asked me to, I present

KC’s Top 5 CR One-Shot Wishlist

(starting with my most wanted)

Number 1. A game using an older edition of DnD – especially if it’s, like, ADnD or 2nd edition. I was honestly hoping we’d get this with Calamity, especially considering that Matt had Halas (an archmage from the Calamity) know spells from 3rd edition that don’t exist in 5th edition. Brennan stating that Vespin was a Malconvoker just added fuel to this particular fire. I’ve never actually played DnD in my life, and everything I know about it comes from watching actual play series & reading up on info in between episodes, but even I know that there’s some crazy stuff in older editions, and since most of the cast have only played 5e, I think it would be super fun to see them see where this game came from. And, because the vast majority of actual play use 5e – which makes sense, as it’s the most recent edition of the game, and the edition that actively has new books coming out for it – it would be cool to see that just because these are older editions doesn’t mean that they can’t still be played and enjoyed.

That being said, this one would probably need to be a miniseries (Exandria Unlimited or otherwise), just to give them enough time and space to be able to experience the ins and outs of said older edition(s).

Number 2. Critical Role: The Next Generation. Okay listen.

This is actually my absolute-number-1-most-wanted one-shot, but I knocked it down a spot because I know that it’s super unlikely to ever happen. I want a one-shot of Liam’s and Sam’s kids playing DnD – and I want Liam to DM it. He’s already DM’d for his kids, and I absolutely love his DMing style and I miss seeing him running a game. And between the handful of snippets that he’s given us of his daughter’s game with her friends, and the fact that Sam’s daughter came up with Nomen L. Frenno in The Nautilus Ark, we all know they’d come up with some incredible characters. AND if it’s set in Exandria? The cherry on top.

Also, DnD actual play series tend to be… not family-friendly, what with the swearing, alcohol, sexual references, blood & guts – none of which I have a problem with, btw, but I know that there are people who do, and I know that there are people who would love to introduce Critical Role or DnD to friends or family members, but can't because of said friends/family members' opinions of such things. I think it would be a great way to combat some of the stereotypes that certain folks have about DnD and TTRPGs in general, and also show that anybody can enjoy this game.

But, as I said, I know this is super unlikely. Sam and Liam have made it a point to not post photos or videos of their kids online (Sam has only recently started doing so) – which I completely understand and fully agree with – and they don’t even refer to them by their real names in videos – which, again, is the right decision. THAT BEING SAID, if this one-shot ever happened, I would ascend to a higher plane of existence from sheer joy.

Number 3. Adventures of the Darrington Brigade 2: Electric Boogaloo. Matt ended the one-shot with the blatant implication that these dumbasses would return at some point, and I love them so goddamn much. Where’s the AotDB sequel, Mercer?

Number 4. Literally any horror one-shot run by Taliesin. The Thursday By Night two-shot wasn’t exactly my cup of tea (I’m just not a big fan of VtM), but Shadow of the Crystal Palace was SO FUCKING GOOD. I’d love another CoC one-shot, especially because the cast has previously and would continue to go ham with the cosplay and the set design and the props, but any spooky/creepy/horrifying story with Taliesin in the GM’s seat would be amazing. Bonus point for being around Halloween.

Number 5. Obligatory M9 post-campaign epilogue one-shot. I mean, VM got their 3 epilogue one-shots (Search for Grog, Search for Bob, Dalen’s Closet) to tie up the remaining couple of loose ends from the campaign – we need The Mighty Nein, one year after C2 ended, all level 20, taking to the seas once more and taking down Uk’otoa (Uk’otoa) once and for all.

Honourable mentions go to an Exandria Unlimited series set in either Blightshore or the Shattered Teeth, but since we don’t know yet where Bell’s Hells journeys will take them (bc while M9 didn’t travel far from Wildemount, VM were quite the globe- and planetrotters), I decided to leave those off the wishlist.

I don’t think Eddie is gonna be legit dating though Kristen said dipping his toe that to me means he’s not gonna be getting his endgame or anything I think what is likely is he dates and then it goes awful and the journey is more of him asking why is it so difficult. I don’t think his dating is gonna go over well imo. I don’t for one second believe they’re gonna introduce another love interest for Eddie maybe a one episode guest star but the date goes wrong and then Eddie is trying to figure out why it’s bad.

i agree 100%. i don’t think we’re getting anything serious out of eddie exploring his romantic life in terms of an outside character becoming endgame. and i also think any dating he does will end in disaster and leave eddie with more questions than answers. now that he’s healed to a point where he can ask himself what he wants and needs in a romantic partner, in my opinion, it sets it up perfectly for him to explore his sexuality as well.

my dream scenario (and possibly a great fic idea) is a funky little montage of eddie going on all these bad dates with women and trying to figure out why he can’t seem to click with anyone. and then he ends up at the bar of a restaurant where he was stood up and ends up chatting with a cute guy there. and he starts thinking “wow this is nice and easy and he’s cute” and when the guy asks for his number, he figures why the hell not. and it never develops into anything serious, but it opens his world wide and he’s learning more about himself and starts quietly dating men without really telling anyone in the firefam explicitly ‘hey i’m sort of into dudes now’ and then he starts noticing how jealous buck is getting. because eddie’s spending more and more time with other guys and isn’t inviting buck out anymore and he’s showing up to work blushing and giddy and rumpled and who the hell is making him so happy? and why isn’t it buck?

alskalsk anyway, like i said. likely won’t happen in the show, but it’s my dream scenario. my weewoo wishlist if you will. regardless, i’m very interested to see how this pans out for both of them!

Happy New Year! Apologies if you’ve talked about this already but what are your thoughts about the anime trailer? And what is your wishlist for the anime?

I probably gushed about it on Twitter and reblogged a bunch of gifsets, but I am not sure I have talked about it coherently on here.

I thought the trailer was awesome and a very good first trailer! With the cool remix of Number One, and the way it opens with Ichigo calmly strolling up to a bunch of hollering Hollows, his big-ass sword slung over one shoulder, I felt like it just perfectly hit that chord of "Hey, remember the way the first time you watched Bleach? Yeah, it's kind of dated now, but remember the way it blew you away? Well, hold on to your butts." If I hadn't already come back to the fandom, it would have grabbed me by the shirt and headbutted me. The animation is gorgeous and it showed my two faves in their most badass moments, back-to-back in the same dramatic color palette. I expect there to be a second trailer, maybe in the spring, that might show a little more of what the story is gonna be about, but as far as getting people who may have forgotten how much they love Bleach to sit up and pay attention, I think it was great.

I am honestly a simple woman, I just really love Bleach, and I am very forgiving of its flaws. I do not think that the TYBW arc was a masterpiece by any means, but I do hope that they stick as close to the manga as possible, with some fleshing out of the fights and maybe some addition character moments. (Give us more of Senjumaru, you cowards!!) The original anime had a bad habit of changing random things for no reason, often ruining the pacing of an arc, or just being weird, and I hope they just don't. Anyway, here are some things I am hoping for:

Bleach has always set the bar for OPs and I am looking forward to an absolute bop. Stretch wish: Let the OP feature one of those classic flash-thrus of every captain posing with their lieutenants, we never got a single scene of Rukia and Ukitake doing Captain Shit together, the least they can do is throw us a dramatic power pose.

The OST in the classic anime kept the old bangers while adding in a new motif as new settings and villains were introduced, and I hope that gets retained. Please, please, please let me hear Precipice of Defeat in the year 2022. If they play Reminiscence while Byakuya tells As Nodt “It is not I who will defeat you”, I will probably burst into tears.

Shinigami's Cup, please please please. I would also like roughly 4 filler episodes. Not, like, Bount filler, but the High Quality filler like the Lamp Society episode or the Maid Cop movie. What I really, really want is a third New Year's episode in the same A-side lieutenant wacky hijinks/B-side sweet Renruki story format to round out the trio.

To be honest, the one part I am extremely worried about them messing up is the part where Rukia confronts her fears while fighting As Nodt. I actually rather like the way the manga never shows what her greatest fear is, but subtlety hints that it's Renji-related (he isn't shown among her lesser fears, the fact that the title of issue 566. What is your fear? is placed on the same page as Rukia warning Renji to play it safe and hide between battles). It would aslo be fine if the anime wants to make this more explicit, but I will flip a table if they ruin this for me.

At one point, I was convinced they would never include the dick-rope scene + sensual sweating, but... maybe??? After this summer’s one-shot was catered so specifically to my interests, I feel like there’s actually a possibiity!

The Kenpachi - Unohana fight better fuck.

I am also really looking forward to the part with Yachiru's shikai and I hope it is more than 3 seconds long

There are so many fights in the TYBW and so many of them are boring, I hope they deal with this somehow, I really do not want this to be another Fake Karakura Town arc. At least in this case, they aren't stalling for the manga to catch up, so I don't anticipate them repeating so much between consecutive episodes, at least.

We deserve to see Byakuya's caboose in the Royal Realm. I am not even into this man, I just think this shot should be full length, to, you know, emphasize how Serious this arc is.

#i know i should probably have an opinion on the sternritter but i honestly just don't care about them #i hope the people who love the sternritter get whatever they want out of this arc #i just care about royal realm antics and byakuya making that speech at sasakibe's funeral #also that bit where grimmjow is like 'if hueco mundo is gone where would i kill you?'#i legitimately cannot wait to see gifs of that one everywhere
