while we're still on the topic of Rocky and my sona having kids i wanna share an idea before i forget,
she's always said she'd never get married and have kids- it's just not the life she wanted. she wasn't even capable of falling in love anyway (and y'all know how true that ended up being /sarcasm)
so imagine her surprise when Nina shows her some photos of Rocky as a kid and her brain goes "okay i want one of these"

Nimona isn't a representation of the most oppressed person in our society, she's a representation of white Christian conservatives' worst fear regarding gender - when they hear "transgender", what they imagine is a white trans woman, someone who they think is a man ("danger") trying to secretly infiltrate them by disguising themselves as a white female ("harmless/nonthreatening").
Nimona herself seems to understand this "white girl=non-threat" bias. When the one little girl sees her as a dragon, she shifts to the most non-threatening shape she can - a cute white girl - and it still fails because the whole point is that society thinks that image is an act to fool them. It's also why she rejects Ballister's belief that things would be easier for her if she stayed looking like a (white) girl. Not only is that impossible for her, but people don't believe she really is.
Because again, her story is not about who on average experiences the most oppression, it's about a particular type of oppression that comes from many white Christian communities in the US.
Imagine if, instead of a "harmless" looking little white girl that appeared in the woods to young Gloreth, unable to even throw a rock, Nimona had instead stumbled out of the woods looking and acting like young Ballister when he jumped over the fence and attacked a training dummy. Would the town have even allowed her to hang around long enough to discover she was a shapeshifter? Probably not. A young-Ballister-looking Nimona would arguably have faced more oppression up-front, but it's a different experience than being seen as a secret, insidious threat, which is the type of oppression being depicted here.
And yes, the society looks racially diverse, but we don't actually know that. We do know the Director is white and kills their black Queen, while Ballister looks like a stereotypical American perception of a "foreigner". So I think we can reasonably conclude that we're expected to bring our real-world knowledge of racial bias to understanding their world. (We also don't know how accepting this society actually is of diverse relationships, or if Ambrosius's relationship is tolerated simply because of his high status).
Therefore, I think it's worth considering (likely, even) that this society is a depiction of the evangelical Christian expectation that "racial diversity" means everyone has assimilated into their cultural beliefs. So it's not a depiction of a genuinely racially diverse society oppressing an apparently white girl, it's a depiction of a particular type of Christian fantasy world and the consequences for two different types of "outsiders," one who looks like an outsider and one who, at first glance, doesn't.

hey!! responding to your most recent post - I would definitely give SNW a watch, but here's a list of things I've noticed that are different/divergent from old trek that you might want to mentally prepare for: 1) they dedicate (what feels like to me) a lot more screen time to fight scenes than in old trek. it feels like there's at least one 3-5+ minute fight scene every episode, which I personally find boring/uncreative/a lil out of place for star trek. 2) others may not agree but I do feel like they're butchering Spock's character. I don't want to give spoilers so I won't say too much, but a lot of what's happening with him just feels unnatural and like they're not thinking of his long term character development. im also not a fan of their depiction of jim, but that might be more of a personal preference. 3) SNW in general seems to be following the trend of most modern TV shows where everything is high stakes and grim and overly cinematic (idk if that makes sense) with like super dramatic shots all the time and that kinda thing. I personally feel like relying too heavily on dramatic/aesthetic shots and montages leaves less time for scenes with more substance. 4) they changed the klingon head ridges?????? there's probably a lot more that could be said abt snw but I binged it all at once a couple of weeks ago and can't remember most of it lmfao. these were just the most obvious things I noticed without stopping to critically analyze it. I think they do a good job in regards to having moments of levity and actually showing the characters interacting casually, which I appreciate. hope this was helpful and not weird to send to you :)
this is very helpful and not weird to send at all!! i appreciate the info. it's nice to know what i'm getting into from other people's perspectives if i decide to watch it

high likelihood i'll be abandoning this blog indefinitely except to share what i post on ao3. i was already planning on it due to spoilers and wanting to go in as blind as possible but honestly it's fucking exhausting not even being able to go into fandom spaces without them being heavily politicized. yes it's good to be informed but you fuckers are so hot and cold and don't even give a second thought to the nuance in personal and political beliefs. using social media as a platform for social issues was a huge mistake; expectations are placed on people with sizeable followings to speak out about whatever the hot topic is, but as soon as they go against the "morally right" option it's virtual draw-and-quarter time. my grandparents are the stereotypical "i have black friends so i can't be racist and i'd never make a scene in public but in private i'll pick on low-income folks because of the way they talk and use the n word as much as i please" and yeah it's devastating and infuriating how they're stuck in their ways but they've also been there for their kids and grandkids and treated us with nothing but love and kindness and their house is a place of warmth and safety for the whole family. that's why i'd never cut them out. and this may come as a shock to y'all but celebrities are just as layered as the people in our lives because that's what they are. PEOPLE. I DON'T WATCH TV SHOWS FROM A MORAL STANDPOINT I DO IT BECAUSE I LIKE THE STORY OR THE CHARACTERS OR THE VIBES OR FUCKING WHATEVER. YOU GUYS SHOULD TRY IT SOMETIME

I don't want to see another bad-boy-with-a-heart-of-gold or morally gray character or antihero or lovable villain ever again. we have enough of those already. I'm so tired of directors yelling at as about how that's human nature and how broken people do bad things.
I want good characters. I want another Steve Rogers and Clark Kent and Sam Wilson and Hermione Granger and Samwise Gamgee and i want tv shows like Ted Lasso where people are inherently good and broken people do good things!
I want to love characters without having to make excuses for them. i want good characters! because guess what? being good is human nature too!

i am a person who gets very Into aesthetics. like i very much enter Eras that last like a week or two where i'm very invested in a particular type of aesthetic, usually correlated to a hobby or interest. i am not immune to online aesthetic communities. if i'm reading a holmes book, i feel the dark academia phase stirring in its sleep. if i'm dabbling in cryptography, i can sense cryptidcore lurking somewhere in my soul. when i'm unusually happy with summer weather and spend the afternoon making cookies, i know that there is the potential for a cottagecore era within me. same with goblincore, same with corvidcore and werewolfcore and lighthousecore and all the random, niche internet subcommunities that you can find tucked into the maze of obscure tumblr tags at one in the morning.
given the nature of these communities and the way they're treated by participants in them, this is, of course, humiliating.

hmmm what do you think??
Okay, I have thoughts ™️. First, go Halsey, i support the shit out of them speaking up because this is a definitely problem, second I, personally, am fascinated by the power TikTok has in the music industry. There's the bridgerton musical, that started as a silly TikTok and now has Grammy, driver's license only got that big because of tiktok, there's this one girl who had a song go viral and for two hours in the itunes sales charts, she's was above Harry Styles and Taylor Swift. For 2 hours, an indie artist from TikTok was above 2 of the most influential artists in the moment, and the Harry song was watermelon sugar, so like that was something. TikTok made the only Katy Perry single that hadn't chatted, chart after years. I'd love to ready a study about it.
But that creates a major problem, labels don't give a fuck about quality, they care about sales, and right now, the easiest way to get that, is by going viral on tiktok. So we have a bunch of artists doing stuff like that, and that's been going on for a while, Joshua Bassett has a whole series where he's "leaking" demos because his label won't let him release stuff, I've seen Florence from Florence and the Machine making the type of tiktok Halsey did, Charlie Puth and the whole light switch series that hyped the shit out of that song, Conan Gray and the insane amount of telepath tiktoks, Maisie Peters whole promotion for Cate's Brother. And Halsey is not the only one that spoke about the fact that the labels are forcing people to put out tiktoks, she's just the first one I've seen go viral for it, because she's not making it into a joke, they spoke about a serious issue and she continues to do so, i was seeing her twitter and the whole thing is ridiculous. So honestly, yeah, i think some of the stupid tiktoks are desperate attempts of creating a trend, the hug your friends to take my hand was definitely was one, TikTok is a sucker for transitions so maybe the snippet of mm&i one was also one of those. The me myself and cry was definitely one. Them posting for people to use the filter and share tour videos too. I do strongly believe that they are this active out of label pressure not just because they want to. But their contract with BMG is for distribution only, so maybe they have a little more wiggle room and that's why we're not seeing anything too drastic. But I also don't think it's all of them, like the "here's Michael eating a grape" or the "things i dig on tour" where probably just Calum, the cake date one too, but the voiceover one was most likely a promotion thing, so was the chomp one. Issues of the industry, unfortunately, i guess.

i'm going to go ahead and say it. i think bts will have a very slim lasting legacy on kpop as a genre. i don't think that many of their songs will be immortalized in the "kpop canon" the way other artists have.

ai generated images make me increasingly sad and tired the more i see them in more and more casual contexts. i dont know how to explain, but it just fills the world with a bunch of nothing. no matter how visually stunning the pictures might be, there's nothing behind it for me. no dedication, no emotions, no feelings, no hard work or creativity, nothing i can truly think about, admire or enjoy. i dont think thats how art is supposed to be

finished death's game finally, cool drama, cool ending, totally just cried my eyes out
but is no one else worried about the fact that by the end he's *again* living in a world with a fucking dangerous capitalism-powered all-controlling serial killer?
that he is very much aware of
i would be worried about that

The fact you reblogged shit but won’t acknowledge my existence 🖕🏻🤭
Okay wait look.😭 Sometimes I'm online but I'm not online online.
Like I just come on to fuck around & maybe read a fic if I have time or rb stuff I like, but I don't always have the energy to interact & stuff. I'm also the type of person who gets drained from social interactions as small as one text so I usually don't reply until I feel up for it. I do enjoy all the asks / interactions, but it might take a while for me to respond, even though I'm online. Ain't nothing personal though! 💕

FACT: When Yu Ziyuan and Wen Zhuliu face off, Yu Ziyuan angrily disparages him for changing his name to that of his new master and helping to further their goals of violent world domination, to which Wen Zhuliu calmly replies that they simply serve different masters now. Then they try to kill each other about it.
CONCLUSION: Yu Ziyuan/Wen Zhuliu is Nieyao for heterosexuals.

A good example !
I wanted to take a second to highlight this user in the midst of the "discourse" in spam liking and not reblogging.
When I saw this in my notifs just now, I about cried.
Tumblr media
THIS IS WHAT ITS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE.
BE THIS PERSON. THIS IS HOW YOU SHOULD BE DOING IT.
We are not fucking kidding when we say reblogging takes literally two seconds. This user is still liking and sharing!! You don't even have to add tags!! When you spam like we expect spam reblogging for our works!!
This is the bar. The bar is 6ft under yet lots of y'all are literally still going under it and it's fucking insane.
Anyways to you @sjsmith56 I pat you on the head and offer you a cookie. It's snickerdoodle. Hope that's okay.
If y'all don't mind, I'm tagging just a few mutuals in order to highlight this along with my other post.
