2023 in review
Milestones: 10 years since I completed fellowship and became an attending; 10 years since I moved to Oregon.
Places visited: Hawaii in February with my parents and sister; Yellowstone and Grand Tetons in July with my whole family, with a few days down in Utah; Iceland in September with J; Arizona a couple of times to see my niblings; Seattle for a few weekends.
Games played: Settlers of Catan, Dutch Blitz, Cover Your Assets, Codenames, Exploding Kittens, Zombie Kittens, Happy Salmon, Trails, and Dragonwood. Abandon All Artichokes was also very shortly abandoned and Tacocat was not as entertaining as hoped.
Puzzles completed: 2 (one Karin mostly did, and I just threw down a few pieces).
Movies watched: Wakanda Forever; Return of the King (in the theater in April); Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (terrible movie); Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (excellent movie); Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (stop making want to give up chicken!); Red, White, and Royal Blue.
TV shows watched: Battlestar Galactica (all but the last season because I don’t want it to end), Shadow and Bone season 2 (I am so mad that it was canceled), Doctor Who specials, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Great British Bake-Off, Heartstopper season 2 (and let’s be real, lots of season 1 again as well), Lockwood & Co (I think I still have the last episode to watch), Tom Jones (PBS), Good Omens season 2, Schmicago (so so good).
TV shows watched with @lucy8675309: The Mandalorian; Ted Lasso season 3; Star Trek: Picard; Star Trek: Strange New Worlds; Loki season 2; Fringe (we’re on season 4 and I love it so much). We started to watch the second season of Our Flag Means Death, but it was taking us away from Fringe, so it’s on the back burner.
Books read: 128 (!!!). Here’s a link to my storygraph account. I’ll do a separate sum up.
Audiobooks listened to: 13.5. My hope had been to do one per month, and Jonathan Strange took at least 3 months to finish, so I’m surprised I made it, but I did have a long road trip to Yellowstone, where I listened to 3 different books on the way there and back. (Carry On is the 0.5 – I listened to 2/3rd of it on the plane ride down and wanted to finish it by Christmas so switched over to the ebook).
Musicals/Plays watched: Moulin Rouge: the Musical (the movie is so much better); Ain’t Too Proud; My Fair Lady; Choir Boy; Hairspray; A Midsummer’s Night Dream; Six; Tina: The Tina Turner Musical; Les Miserables; Waitress (in the movie theater).
Concerts attended: Theo Katzman in April; Vienna Teng at The Triple Door in Seattle in August.
Music listened to: The Riversitter by Vienna Teng, Prayer for the Broken by Naya Rivera, multiple hours of classical music while visiting my parents.
Medical conferences attended: 2, one virtually, one in Phoenix, in August in 115 heat.
Medical conferences where I gave a presentation: 1 on a specific consideration on organ donation (the reason why I was in Phoenix in August).
Number of lectures given: 5 including to the NW Internal Medicine Society.
Nights spent in the hospital because my driveway too icy/snowy to get home: only 3!
Knitted projects: Wisteria scarf (a Christmas present that I finished in January); Anne, Diana, and Gilbert dolls were finished in the spring (only took me 2 years); Orchid and Gold Poppins scarf, Grandpa sweater (my first real sweater!), 3 scarves for Christmas (which are in various stages of finished and need to be mailed).
Number of skeins of yarn bought: … Just enough for a few more dolls and a sweater or two, and some Icelandic yarn and some yarn for my mom…
Notable fails: the annular solar eclipse (too cloudy), parenting succulent plants (3 needed the Plant Hospital, 1 is still in the Plant ICU), summer flirtations.
House repairs: every board on my 32×24 foot deck was replaced. I still have the two lower decks and the back stairs to tackle.
Visits to the beach: only once in June. Must be rectified in the new year.

Less Is More Prominent
We shared a recent post that laid out the prominences in the mountain west...that is the majority of the high peaks seen on or near the Pacific Crest Trail. As I read the post I was surprised the second highest peak in Washington state, and the first major prominence one walks near as they head north toward Canada, Mount Adams, is low on the list. Its bigger brother/sister, Mount Rainier tops the prominence list. Mount Rainier checks in at 14,411 feet but in terms of prominence shrinks to 13,246 feet. Remember, prominence is the vertical distance between a mountain’s summit and its key col, which is the lowest point on the highest ridge or saddle connecting the mountain to adjacent mountains. 'Lowly' Mount Adams measures 12,276 feet or 8,116 feet in terms of prominence or nine out of ten on the list of top ten prominences.
Tumblr media
That is all fine and good and really, who am I to dispute geographic height? I am a short person so I am well aware of height differentials. In the case of Mount Adams, for me there is a profound distinction. The first ever section I walked on the PCT was from the Columbia River north. Looking south we saw the beautiful spire of Mount Hood. Distinct in its own way. I can remember commenting that it reminded me of the peak you see at the beginning of a movie from Paramount Pictures.
Within a day or so we found ourselves walking along the snowy flanks of Mount Adams. Wow! Adams is a large white snow cone of a mountain. As we rounded it we could look up to its icy heights. Growing up in Kansas, being this close to such a prominence was awe inspiring. Actually it was probably a bit more like shock and awe inspiring.
Since that time Mount Adams has had a special place in my memory and my heart. Unlike its volcanic siblings further north in Washington and those further south in Oregon and beyond, it is not as noticeable to many people. Many of the other Cascade volcanoes are visible from places like Seattle or Portland or at the least along the I-5 corridor. Adams peeks out (no pun intended) at Portland on a clear day but otherwise is too far east up the Columbia to be readily recognized. I think this adds to its mystique for me.
Two weeks ago I found myself back near Mount Adams attempting to climb to its summit. Those original feelings of awe and attraction swept over me. The PCT brought me close but this experience would literally take me the next level. To gain the summit is not a technical climb. No ropes or harnesses but crampons are helpful. Even with all my thrilling feelings the journey up was still quite a grunt. Nevertheless those old original 'first meeting' feelings powered me upward.
Tumblr media
I guess the best way for me to describe my feelings for this mountain is I have a crush on it. There. I said it. Like any crush the feeling is not always reciprocal. Adams likely didn't even know I was there but I did. Every step was an acknowledgement of my admiration. Reaching the top there was that big shot, Mount Rainier waving back. Nearby was the decapitated poor old Mount Saint Helens. In the far distance Glacier Peak and Mount Baker. shining in their icy exuberance. The length of the remaining northbound PCT stretches north past them. Mount Adams' prominence may be lowly in the record books but to me, he/she/them holds a much higher position. I would take Mount Adams anywhere if they would have me.

38 with Mat
from the Winter/Christmas Writing Prompts list
38. “You’re under the mistletoe so stop stalling and just kiss.” 🎄
quick note: this one is prob a bit longer than the others will be. I just L O V E writing Sydney and Marty as secondary characters in Mat stories.
quick warnings: swearing, alcohol, super snowy powdery Christmas fluff
and, just for fun, song pairing: mistletoe by Justin Bieber (obviously)
_____
There really was no place like home.
After moving away to Los Angeles to attend USC for both undergrad and grad studies, you were finally back in New York. You hadn’t been able to resist the pull — it was almost as if, from all the way across the continent, you could feel the Atlantic tide receding and pulling you home along with it. For better or for worse, you belonged to the Empire State.
Sydney, your lifelong best friend and a New Yorker herself, was beyond ecstatic, as she had recently gotten engaged to her longtime boyfriend Matt, a hockey player, and named you her maid of honor. Planning a wedding — not to mention showers and bachelorette festivities — would be far easier, and far more fun, with you in the same zip code. Since moving back six weeks ago, you’d spent about ninety percent of your time with Sydney by your side, making up for lost time with the woman who had long been your other half.
So sweet, right? There was just one problem. Sydney wouldn’t stop trying to set you up with guys. She was insistent that you’d been single for too long — you’d broken up with your college sweetheart by the end of your senior year — and she made it her mission for you to find love again. And she, on her own, was bad enough — she’d already hooked you up with so many friends of friends that you’d lost count, and none had been interesting enough for a second date — but her fiancé conspiring right along with her made resisting them that much more difficult.
This particular night, she had lured you to the home she shared with Matt under the guise of having dinner with her family, when in reality, she was throwing a Christmas dinner party for Matt’s closest friends on the team. All of whom had — and brought — significant others. Except for one. What a coincidence.
Also coincidentally, his name was Mat, too, or so you were told — you didn’t quite believe Syd’s Matt when he told you that upon introducing the two of you.
“Mat with one ’t,’” he announced, one arm slung around Mat’s shoulders. The handsome, dark-haired man swallowed thickly and gave you his best polite smile — it was in that moment that you realized beyond a shadow of a doubt this was yet another set up.
Matt made a lame excuse about needing to check on Sydney in the kitchen and snuck away after some brief pleasantries, but not before blatantly nudging your much-smaller frame toward New Mat. You gave Matt a menacing glare before recovering, standing a safe distance away from New Mat, leaning against the wooden beam behind you to keep you steady.
“So, Mat with one ’t,’ how long have you played with the ever-obnoxious Matty?” you asked, trying to play it cool.
Mat laughed easily. Damn, he had a nice laugh — the kind that made his pretty eyes crinkle at the corners. Nice hair. Nice teeth — perfect fucking teeth. Wasn’t he supposed to be a hockey player? Wait, what was he saying? Something about Seattle, and the draft, and… now you were lost. You nodded slowly with a forced smile as you tried your hardest to focus on what he was saying. He was just so goddamn pretty.
Thankfully, Sydney’s call from the kitchen saved you from the embarrassment of not having heard a word this poor boy had spoken.
“Dinner’s ready! I’m really type A, as you all know, so I made little placecards for everyone at the table,” she announced to the group of ten, hands clasped before her as Matt snaked an arm around her from behind and smiled proudly.
“Guess that’s our cue,” Mat mused. “Shall we?”
You threw him a grin and nodded, turning your back to him and making your way to the dining room.
On your way, you paused in front of your dear friend just long enough to grumble, “Assigned seats? Really, Syd?”
She clapped enthusiastically and smacked your ass as you passed her. “Yep! See you in there, champ!” she exclaimed as you heard frantic whispers exchanged between Mat and Matt. You couldn’t hold back your snicker, and as you glanced over your shoulder, Mat gave you a strained smile. You shook your head bemusedly and turned to the table to find that, to no one’s surprise, you and Mat were indeed to be seated side by side at one end of the table. You cleared your throat and nodded toward the cards bearing your names.
“Subtle, no?” you joked, causing Mat to blush pink. He choked out, “Ah, yeah. You gotta love them.” Then, he pulled out your chair and motioned for you to take a seat, which, as luck would have it, Sydney and Matt caught just in time because they were bringing in the food on serving dishes at that very moment. Their eyes sparkled and Sydney looked like she may self-destruct out of sheer joy as you sat down and thanked Mat. You gave her an icy look and she visibly retreated, holding herself back from making a complete scene.
“Okay, dig in!” she said instead as she sat down across from you.
Dinner was incredible, as usual — while your talents lacked in the cooking area, Sydney had always been an outstanding chef. Even more, you enjoyed the conversation, which was mostly inclusive of everyone at the table, save for the occasional chirp Mat secretly muttered in your ear about Matt or Anders, making you cover your mouth with your hand to stifle a giggle as Sydney looked on smugly. Meanwhile, whenever you and Sydney would say the exact same thing at the same moment or finish the other’s sentence, Mat would look to Marty, who would only raise his eyebrows and nod, confirming Mat’s suspicion that these two were always this in sync. Mat found it endearing. He adored Syd — if he didn’t, he wouldn’t have agreed to come here tonight when she told him, “There’s someone I want you to meet…” — and already, he saw countless similarities in the two of you.
After he’d helped you clear the plates and load the dishwasher for your hosts, you and Mat settled onto a couch in the farthest corner of the living room, near the Christmas tree, while the others gathered in the center of the space, loudly entertaining themselves. As you curled your feet underneath yourself, you didn’t miss how Sydney reached for a nearby remote and slowly flickered on the fireplace right beside you and Mat. Yet again, you shot her a killer look that she pretended not to see as Mat smiled, amused at how flustered you were by Sydney trying to further set the mood.
“So how long have you known Syd?” he asked as he took another swig from his beer bottle, attempting to get you back on track. “Has to be a while. I swear I’ve never seen two friends who were more alike.”
You tucked some hair behind your ear and let out a breathy chuckle. With anyone else, you were ever prepared to skirt that question and quickly move on to another subject. But with Mat, it was nice knowing you really didn’t have to.
“Yeah, my whole life, actually,” you answered, a smile on your face at the thought. Your eyes flickered up to his as you added, “My dad played for the Jets... with Boomer while he was there.”
Mat’s brows quirked noticeably, but not in the familiar way that made you feel like he was about to ask you to FaceTime your dad or get an autograph from him. Because he was a professional athlete himself — which was ironic because you’d sworn up and down your whole life that, because of the lifestyle you saw your dad and his teammates, not to mention their families, lead, you’d never fall for anyone who played sports for a living. Even when Sydney insisted with a shrug after settling down with Matt, “It’s not that bad.”
“No way,” Mat said with a casual laugh. “That’s awesome. What position did he play?”
“Uh, receiver,” you replied. “So he and Boomer were tight. Our moms hit it off right off the bat and have been best friends since. Since then, we’ve always vacationed together, ended up living in the same neighborhood after they both retired. I’m three years younger than Syd and I was basically like her shadow. Still am, I guess,” you added with a smile.
Mat nodded, his eyes never leaving your face as you told the familiar tale. “I think that’s awesome though,” he spoke. “You guys could be sisters I feel like. You act just like her. Plus Marty says you’re the only friend of hers who’s kicked him out of bed so you could sleep with her.”
You threw a hand to your chest and your head back laughing at that, and Mat’s heart soared at being able to elicit such a reaction from you himself. You pointed a gold-polished index finger at him and admitted, “He tells no lies on that one.”
Just then, you caught Mat’s unabashed gaze, which had shifted from well-mannered and nonchalant into something deeper, something... affectionate. You swallowed, casting a downward glance at your lap, and swirled the ice cubes in your otherwise empty highball glass.
“I need a refill,” you said with a nervous giggle. “You want anything?”
Mat looked all too pleased with himself at your offer, and he nodded. “Sure, yeah, another beer would be great. Thank you,” he said. You smiled and nodded as you turned away and headed for the kitchen.
Ever the subtle one, once again, Sydney, who had been shamelessly watching the two of you from her perch in Matt’s lap across the room, stumbled over Jax’s paw as she bolted to the kitchen island where you now stood. You blinked at her wildly and said, “May I help you, Sydney Irene? You nearly wounded your poor dog.”
“So,” Sydney sang, ignoring your question completely as she leaned back against the kitchen counter, propping her palms on the edge and looking much more smooth than she had just a moment ago. She waggled her eyebrows at you before continuing. “Whadd’ya think? He’s cute, right?”
You scoffed. “Sydney—“ you began in a warning tone as you reached for the rum, but were interrupted before you could speak another word.
“If you hate him, it was Matt’s idea,” she deadpanned, then allowed a mischievous grin to stretch along her painted red lips as she cocked her head. “But if you like him, it was mine.”
You rolled your eyes as you poured yourself another rum ginger, ignoring the flush you could feel creeping up your chest and neck under Sydney’s scrutiny.
“You’re blushing! You do like him!” Syd squealed as she poked at your side, thankfully making an attempt to stay quiet as the guys, Mat included, carried on noisy shenanigans in the family room before you.
“Sydney, stop! I just met him,” you tried to argue, turning away from her. It was Sydney’s turn to roll her eyes.
“Like that matters. I fell for Matt like—“ she snapped her fingers for dramatic effect, “—that. And look at us now.”
You pursed your lips to the side. You couldn’t exactly argue that. With no quick comeback coming to mind, you stirred your drink, took three generous gulps — as Sydney watched, wide-eyed — and licked your lips before sighing at her.
“Well, fine,” you grumbled as you opened the fridge and grabbed a fresh beer for Mat. “Let’s not keep the boy waiting then.” You sashayed away from your friend who, spinning away from you, quickly squeezed her eyes shut and crossed her fingers before turning back and following behind you.
Mat thanked you profusely for the drink as you returned to him. Now he sat among his teammates, and Sydney sat back in Matt’s lap as you took the seat beside Mat on the opposite couch. You noticed how he immediately leaned back and comfortably stretched his arm across the cushion behind you, and you’d be lying to yourself if you said you didn’t inch a little closer then. It briefly occurred to you that you were drawn to him in the very same way you’d been drawn back home not long ago.
He felt like home. Already.
And soon, after a few hours more of merrymaking, Mat never leaving your side, the other couples had all headed for home. You four who remained had played several rounds of euchre and sang and danced to half a dozen Christmas carols before you realized how late it was. Knowing you’d had too much rum and wouldn’t be fit to drive, you’d already established that you’d stay in Sydney’s guest room — or maybe kick Matt out of the master. Regardless, you were staying put. But Mat, reluctantly, was leaving — the boys had practice in the morning.
“I guess I should go,” Mat sighed after a long round of goodbyes. Matt and Sydney gave him one last hug and retreated to the far side of the spacious room, aiming, of course, to leave the two of you to your own goodbye.
You nodded. “I guess you should,” you said, caught off guard by the twinge of sadness in your tone. “I’ll walk you out.” Mat smiled and turned toward the front door, and your heart truly may have skipped an actual beat when he glanced back at you and reached his hand out for you to grab. You did so, biting down on your smiling bottom lip as you followed him down the hall into the entryway, acutely aware that, if Sydney and Matt were indeed watching — of which you had no doubt — they could still clearly see you.
But when Mat pulled on his shoes and stood up straight again, stepping slowly, so slowly, closer to you, all you could think about was how hard your heart was thumping against your ribcage. You looked up at him in anticipation, and he smoothed his hands down the sleeves of your sweater softly.
“I had a really, really nice time tonight, you know,” Mat spoke. You had to remind yourself to breathe as the sincerity of his voice flooded your senses and his warm, honey-flecked eyes pierced through you. “Tonight was honestly the most fun I’ve had in a long time.”
You beamed — how could you not? “Yeah?” you asked incredulously. Mat nodded.
“Yeah. In fact,” he cleared his throat. “I was wondering if maybe, uh, you’d want to go to dinner with me sometime. Like maybe this Sunday night, after we play?”
You felt yourself grinning like an idiot, yet had no control.
“Yeah,” you finally answered. “Yes. Of course. I’d love that.”
Mat blew out a long breath and chuckled nervously. “Thank God,” he added as you both dissolved into a fit of giggles. You stepped closer to him and smelled his clean, woodsy cologne, inadvertently breathing it in. Mat came nearer, too, and tentatively reached his hands around to your lower back. “It’s a date then,” he spoke, his voice lower now, gravelly. You swallowed — hard — and gave a nod.
“It’s a date,” you echoed.
You simply stood in one another’s presence for a few long moments, smiling giddily at each other, before Mat sighed once more and glanced toward the door.
“I really don’t wanna go, but I—“
“No! Syd, just leave them be,” Matt suddenly whispered sharply to his fiancé — who seemed to have literally leapt up from the couch — though there was no point in whispering at all because you still heard him loud and clear. Jumping up behind Sydney, Matt easily wrapped her in his arms and clapped his hand over her mouth just as she started to speak.
After wrestling for control of Matt’s hand, she finally pulled it away just long enough to call out, “You’re under the mistletoe so stop stalling and just kiss already!”
With one final “shush!”, Matt covered her mouth once more, though his entire body was wracking with silent laughter.
“Goodnight, kids!” Matt said tersely as he all but manhandled Sydney down the opposite hallway into their bedroom, the two of them erupting with laughter the second they closed the door.
You rolled your jaw and looked above you and Mat to find that, yes, indeed, there hung a very Sydney-like crystal ornament adorned with glittery mistletoe, suspended from the archway.
“Un-fucking-believable,” you muttered, resting your head against Mat’s chest as you both laughed anxiously.
But a moment later, Mat’s voice rumbled in his chest. “Hey...” he spoke. You took that as your invitation to look up at him, and when you did, you found him gazing at you even more tenderly than he had before.
“I mean, since there’s mistletoe and all.. would it be okay if I kissed you?” he asked. His hand found your cheek and you grasped his fingers in your own.
“Well,” you began, leaning further into him. “Only since there’s mistletoe.”
Mat breathed a chuckle and whispered, “Okay, good,” before his lips found yours in a toe-curling, snow-melting, heart-growing, hell of a Christmas movie kiss that you both found yourselves smiling into by the end.
“Wow,” was somehow all you could whisper when you finally pulled away for air.
“Yeah,” Mat agreed simply. “Wow.”
“It worked!” You heard the muffled squeal from behind Sydney’s closed door.
You rolled your eyes once again, hating Sydney in that moment, as Mat snickered and leaned in for another kiss.
Little did you know that a few years later, your dear, meddling Sydney would stand up at your side in front of a ballroom filled with your and Mat’s family and dearest friends and proudly tell the story of that cold late-December night when your love story with Mat began.

Train to Seattle
12/31–1/1
There is kind of a romantic dream of taking a 36-hour long scenic train ride, but it really is a long journey. It actually turned out to be a great way to see some sections of our ride in reverse, as we got close to Santa Barbara it was pretty nice to see the actual cycling path along the coastline that we would be taking several weeks later.
I can’t get over how varied the landscape is. We passed red and green scrubby land by the sea that was so textured I wish I could touch it. We got a glimpse of our future passing beachside campsites. We passed through huge boulders, snowy forests, mountain streams and icy lakes. Every time we catch glimpse of a roadside bike lane we excitedly say “bike lane!”
As for New Year’s Eve on the train I can say that the Amtrak Coast Starliner isn’t the wild and crazy party that we thought it could have turned into (we’re really only thinking of the NYE train ride in the movie Trading Places I guess), we both really fell asleep before midnight out of boredom or because we woke up at 3:45am that morning to start our trip.
An unexpected highlight of the train ride was when we realized we would pass through Albany, Oregon. Our friends Carrie and Daniel live there and texted to say they’d come to say hi at that stop. It wasn’t even a “fresh air” stop so there really wasn’t as much time to get off the train but the conductor let us jump off for a quick hug. It was our first timing meeting their 11 month old kid Benjamin too, so that made the day really special!
On our second day on board we had lunch in the dining carriage. Seating arrangements require people to be seated to fill a 4 seater table, but we lucked out by being seated with a woman from Olympia, Washington called Candice. It was lovely to share a meal with someone who was interested in having a conversation and who tolerated our excited gushing about our travel plans and had such an enlightened view on taking a leap and seeing the world. She was even kind enough to give us her business card so that we could look her up when we cycle through her town.
Other train highlights include:
-the soft microwaved personal pizza that I (Caroline) covered with ketchup and thoroughly enjoyed. Gotta carb up.
-Drinking a can of Budweiser while watching the sunset in the panorama carriage while overhearing the tipsy conversations of men making new friends with each other. (“What was your name again? I’m gonna add you in my phone as Paul Sac”)
-scrambled eggs for breakfast at 6:30am in dining carriage to beat the rush

Washington, USA
We left Canada by train, taking the Cascades route on the AMTRAK down to Seattle. The reason for this was partly do to with cost and the difficulty of taking hire cars across state/international borders, but also to do with taking a break from driving and viewing the scenery from a different perspective. The journey was beautiful, running right along the coast as the sun set, with lots of herons fishing, and one nudist beach who all waved as the train went by! The train was very cheap, which was great for us but it did mean there were a few stinky people in the carriage with us unfortunately... we arrived into Seattle late and checked into our lovely Airbnb, catching glimpses of the Seattle skyline glittering in the dark, and its famous Space Needle.
Tumblr media
We didn’t really have much time to explore Seattle, as staying there was really expensive, but we had a lot of fun and a lot of food during our fleeting visit. Pike Place Market was really busy and vibrant, with plentiful fruit stalls, fishmongers throwing fish around, and quirky shops. It’s a bit of a maze, spread over several floors, so it’s surprisingly easy to get away from the throngs and find a quiet spot - we enjoyed sampling some food in a little courtyard, and a ‘secret garden’. Seattle graced us with beautiful sunshine the couple of days we were there, and we saw none of the rain that it is famous for!
Tumblr media
We left Seattle, again by train, for the short journey to Olympia, a small city that is actually the capital of Washington State. We stayed here the night before heading to the Olympic Peninsula, famous for its wild coast, untouched wooded interior, temperate rain forest (I didn’t actually know temperate rain forest was a thing until researching this trip), and teenage vampires. Obviously we made a brief stop in Forks of Twilight fame, we were driving through it after all...
Tumblr media
The Olympic Peninsula really did have a wild and ethereal beauty. Its west - where the rain forest is - gets a massive 12-14 feet of rain per year, so we saw plenty of grey skies, but the rain showers passed quickly and were interspersed with patches of sunshine. The beaches here are astounding - huge stacks of rock sit in the water and on the beach, some so big they are like islands on land with trees on top. Surrounded by rock pools, they presumably are islands when the tide comes in, and the edges of the beach are littered with enormous drift logs from the forests, silvery giants that you have to climb over to reach the sand. These must be the skeletons of trees that are hundreds of years old, they were so huge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We stayed in a cute little ‘glamping’ cabin in the forest. Luckily the rain that greeted us passed after a while, as the barbeque was our only way to cook. The clouds here never fully lift from the hills though, it feels like you could reach out and touch them. The outdoor shower, fed by a stream, was actually warm as it had been fixed up to a canister of gas, which was amazing!
Tumblr media
With our rain coats to hand, we also headed into the Hoh Rain Forest with the intention (!) of doing a hike after the short walks that led from the visitor centre. On the way we drove through short, torrential showers... the weather here really does change in an instant. It feels as though it could rain at any time; the clouds hang so low that you feel on a level with them and droplets cling to the trees and the beard-like moss that trails off them. Equally, even when the sky is heavy and grey, the sun suddenly peeks through. After walking the short Hall of Mosses trail through a variety of ancient and towering trees, we then started the second short loop. Even though it was a less than 2-mile walk there were fewer people on the trail, and it quickly felt like we were the only people in the woods. We then noticed a couple of guys up ahead gesturing to us... we heard some clumsy movement in the undergrowth to our left and saw a flash of black fur about 30m away. When we caught up with the guys, they said the black bear had walked right by the path, less than a metre away! We continued on, glad to find a few more people ahead (apparently bears tend to avoid human noise), but a bit further around there was the noise of something slipping in the trees, then a baby bear clambered between the forks of a tree and stared at us curiously. Our immediate concern was where its mother was - the one thing you are always told about bears here is to never get between a mother and its young - but we spotted it moving in the undergrowth, so carried on past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point, we decided that we would perhaps not do a longer hike into a more remote area of the forest...! This was the first time we’d seen bears whilst outside of the car, and although they’d seemed perfectly placid we didn’t want to push our luck.
For our final day in the peninsula, we drove up to a spot called Hurricane Ridge. It was an amazing drive, a proper mountain road with stunning views all the way up and occasional deer (and their babies) crossing the road. We reached the top to see our first glimpse of the Olympic Mountains, which had been hidden most of the time by cloud. It wasn’t long before the clouds moved in though, obscuring the view. Tiny, hardy little wildflowers and short, ancient looking trees line a walk that literally heads into the clouds.
Tumblr media
We spent our final full day in Washington in the Mount Rainier National Park. Rainier is considered an active volcano, and is the highest peak in the Cascade Range. We headed to a place in the park called Paradise (thought it sounded alright...) to do the Skyline Trail, a loop with great views of Rainier and the surrounding mountains. After an extremely steep start, it wasn’t long before patches of snow appeared beside - and on - the trail. Dom had his doubts that we’d be able to complete the whole trail without hiking poles or crampons, but we kept going. The views of Rainier’s peak were incredible, you could see the glaciers in detail, creeping down its slopes in craggy blue tongues. Looking back down the trail gave a true sense of how high we were, actually looking down on several saw-toothed peaks behind us. The deep green hills folded into layers of inky blue where they were so far away.
More and more of the trail became covered in snow, and I had to admit defeat. We were close to the highest point of the trail (6,800 feet) but the path petered out into a very narrow, icy switchback with nothing to cling to, two small chasms that required jumping over, and a steep drop on one side. Beyond this path, we couldn’t see how much more snow there was the over the crest, so we decided we had to turn back. Getting back down on the snowy slope was a bit hairy but we got to enjoy the amazing views that had been at our backs on the way up.
Tumblr media
We spent our last night in Washington back in Olympia, which is a nice little town with some lovely quirky places to eat and drink.

Vancouver, Canada
The first morning we woke up in Vancouver, we looked out the window and everything was white. It had snowed the entire night and it wasn’t getting any lighter. Due to the heavy snow and very icy and slippery roads, everyone was driving cautiously and slowly. It took us an hour to drive 6 miles from the airbnb to breakfast because traffic was so backed up.
After some really really good hot chocolate and pancakes, we went to the Capilano Park. Entrance was around $35/person which is a bit pricy but totally worth it. I was worried because all the pictures I had seen of the park and their famous suspension bridge were taken during summer. I didn’t know how it would be in the winter with all the snow. But, sure enough, it was beautiful. All the snow made the forrest look enchanted and overall it was a much better time to go visit because there weren’t as many people in the park and on the bridge that day as there would have been on a non snow day or in the summer.
After the park, we went to Yaletown to eat. Then, to Gastown to drink. These are both young areas with lots of restaurants and bars, both great for going out at night.
Our second day in Vancouver was just as snowy as the first, but luckily the sky was much more clear and we could actually see the tops of the buildings which were covered in fog the day before. We went to Stanley Park and took some pictures of the cityscape and the bridge. After driving around downtown some more, we headed over to Granville Island where we had lunch from the market and then headed back towards Seattle to catch our flight home. Many people, including my mother, suggested we go to the Pacific Northwest in the summer when everything is luscious green and sunny. Honestly, we got lucky with very nice, sunny weather for the most part. The cold was a nice change from the LA heat and the snow made everything seem so mystical and beautiful. I say, go visit these places whenever! When the scenery is this beautiful, anytime is a good time!

Top Spots to Visit on a Pacific Northwest Road Trip • The Blonde Abroad
Are you planning a USA road trip this summer? Since international travel might not be happening, exploring domestically and hitting the open road is a great option. Before you hit the road, check out these 10 essential tips for planning your road trip!
Are you finding it kind of daunting to plan out what you want to see and do? With endless options and so many different routes, I understand! For me, California has always been such a wonderful place to explore (granted, I was born here, so that makes it an easier jumping-off point).
Whether you’re starting your road trip in California and seeing some of the top sites on Pacific Coast Highway, or you’re wanting to explore all of the West Coast—I’ve got a number of places for you to check out!
Since California is already covered in this 10-day California coast road trip itinerary, I’m focusing on Oregon and Washington.
Here are the top spots to add to your Pacific Northwest road trip itinerary.
Places to See in Oregon on a Road Trip
The Oregon Vortex + the House of Mystery
Opened in the 1930s, the Oregon Vortex attracted tourists from all over as a prime roadside attraction. Located in Gold Hill, the Oregon Vortex and the House of Mystery has a number of optical illusions that are worth checking out!
Sisters (The City)
In the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, you’ll want to take a stroll down the main street and enjoy all the beauty of Sisters.
You’ll find a bit of an Old West meets rustic Oregon vibe as you wander. Make a stop at Sisters Coffee Company—located in an old restored cabin. Sample the pickings at Sisters Meat and Smokehouse, and visit a myriad of other places where you can pick up a growler of something local.
Take snaps of the 1880s buildings and embrace the small-town ambiance!
This is one of the biggest wine-producing areas in the country and shouldn’t be missed!
The Wineries of Willamette
In the Willamette Valley, there are over 400 wineries between Portland and Eugene—and I’ve heard that some of the best Pinot Noir bottles come from here (my two cents: you’ll have to be the judge!) Take your pick from the many wineries and make a stop to sample the tastings and enjoy the views.
One of Oregon’s many incredible waterfalls
Waterfalls + Mount Hood
With waterfalls just 30 minutes outside of Portland, visiting a handful of them is an essential stop! Multnomah Falls, easily the most popular waterfall outside of Portland, is absolutely breathtaking and by far the local and visitor’s favorite.
This two-tiered cascade plunges 620 feet and is photo-worthy all year long. A bit less crowded, but no less accessible is Wahclella Falls, an easy one-mile hike with pretty views of wildflowers and Tanner Creek.
If you’re a bit more adventurous, try Lower Oneonta Falls—hikers have to traverse an infamous log jam and an icy creek to find the 100ft falls.
Be sure to bring your boots and a rain jacket!
Not too far from many of the trailheads (about an hour or two by car), you can visit Mount Hood. Mount Hood’s perpetually snowy peak is a sight to see! Crowned by glaciers that can be seen from miles, it’s the second most climbed mountain after Japan’s Mount Fuji.
Portland
Portland deserves an entire post (check out this ultimate guide to Portland in a weekend) and there are so many places to explore, delicious foods to eat, and shops to peruse.
A few highlights:
Tillamook
Tillamook Cheese Factory and Creamery is a must! Learn about the famous dairy products and (the best part!) sample so many cheeses and snag an ice cream cone while you’re at it.
Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach
The perfect place for gorgeous photos and to explore tide pools. Here’s a time table from the Visitor Center so you can plan to go during low tide. Be mindful of the little critters and not to step on living rock clams!
While you’re there, indulge in a bowl of clam chowder at Driftwood Restaurant.
Places to See in Washington on a Road Trip
Get a Taste of Bavaria at Leavenworth
Talk about charming! This Bavarian-inspired village is brimming with Alpine-style buildings, restaurants that serve German beer and food, and a Nutcracker Museum (yes, really!).
Seattle
Surrounded by water, mountains, and gorgeous greenery, Seattle is a must-visit for any trip to the Pacific Northwest. Of course, the iconic Pike Place Market has to be explored—as well as many of its delights tasted.
A few highlights:
The Fremont Troll
Also in Seattle in the Fremont neighborhood, the Fremont Troll deserves a visit. Curious about the sculpture? In 1989, the Fremont Arts Council held an art competition to bring new life to the area under the bridge. And what better sculpture to go under the bridge than a troll?
Puget Sound
If you want scenic coastlines for days and to go whale watching, look no further. You may want to find a place to park the car for a bit and hop on a ferry to experience Puget Sound properly. Or find a ferry that allows you to drive on and drops you on the other side.
Puget Sound is huge and if you’ve got ample time, there are quite a few places around there to explore. Perhaps pop over to Bainbridge Island for an afternoon?
Olympic National Park
The Pacific Northwest is known for its epic national parks and its easy to see why! Olympic National Park stuns with its snow-covered mountains and misty forests.
  Port Townsend
Known for an abundance of gorgeous Victorian-style homes, you can take a slight step back in time while exploring Port Townsend.
What places would you add for a Pacific Northwest road trip? Let me know in the comments below!
