the beach | sturniolo triplets x gn!reader
description: a day at the beach ft. y/n & the triplets.
trigger warnings: mostly fluff, subtle mentions of anxiety, etc. read at your own risk.
word count: 1.1k
The sun kissed the light waves upon the salty water as well as the glistening sand, it sparkled with the reflection from the sun's rays. You sitting against a beach chair under an umbrella, a bucket hat over your hair and sunglasses over your eyes.
Sweat dripped down along the bridge of your nose, causing the sunglasses to slip down. You found yourself constantly pushing them back up as you had an opened book in your lap, earbuds were stuck in your ears as the audiobook played; it motivated you more to keep reading.
Matt and Chris were in the water, splashing around together as Nick was building some sandcastles close to where you were seated. The sounds of their laughter made you smile to yourself as you continued reading.
The wind was blowing nicely, allowing just a sliver of a moment where the sweating stopped. You flickered your gaze up to watch the three of them for a minute. They looked so happy and free. It surprised you how such a simple place could bring out the most excitement in people.
"Y/N/N, are you hungry?" Nick was asking as you paused the audiobook from your phone, taking the earbuds out and closing your book.
"Yeah, I could eat," You shrugged, tossing your book into your tote bag that was sitting against the sand, beside your chair.
"Matt, Chris!" Nick called over the wind as his two brothers looked over. "Y/N and I are hungry! We wanna get something to eat! Are you coming?"
Chris gave Nick a thumbs up as the two of them started to get out of the water. They started walking towards you and Nick, grabbing a couple towels to dry themselves off.
.
With the four of you carrying your beach stuff back to the car, you tossed everything into the trunk before heading to the boardwalk, just beside the beach. It was still stupidly hot as you all tried to find a spot to get some food. There were tons of people around, but luckily they were all too busy doing their own thing to recognize any of you.
"I'm in the mood for pizza," Matt commented as you all agreed. "That place looks good," He pointed down the boardwalk to the left, an open, outdoor pizza restaurant. You all decided on going there and it wasn't long before you got your food.
You and Nick saved a table for the four of you while Matt and Chris ordered your food.
"It's so hot," You grumbled.
"I know, it's kinda disgusting," Nick replied.
You nodded in agreement as Matt and Chris came back with four slices of pizza and a large basket of fries for you all to share.
"We should go shopping after," You suggested and started eating your piece. Chris sat beside Nick and Matt was next to you; you and Nick were across from each other. "Mostly because the stores have air conditioning," You chuckled softly with your mouth full of food.
"I second that," Chris nodded.
The smell of popcorn and funnel cake filled the air, mixed with the saltiness coming off the beach. Despite how hot it was, you were relaxed being around your best friends. There was a cool breeze hitting you as you were under an umbrella, it put a short stop to the sweat that was dripping along the sides of your face and behind your neck.
.
Walking along the boardwalk again, you were going in store after store, mindlessly looking across the things they had for sale. Some of them were smaller-run businesses, making handmade clothes or trinkets. You were with Matt looking through some of the handmade jewelry one of the stores hand.
"This ring is sick.." You mumbled as you pointed to it as it was resting inside a box, with foam along the bottom, atop a wooden table.
"You should get it," He suggested as he was looking at the necklaces.
"Mm.." You hummed thinking about it.
Across the store, something caught your attention. You walked towards it, without informing Matt, and saw that there were crystal bracelets. You examined them and their style, seeing that they were very beautiful. You decided to pick out three of them for Matt, Nick and Chris.
For Nick, you picked green aventurine. You examine the meaning of the crystal and saw it meant confidence, vitality and growth, that screamed Nick to you.
For Chris, you picked obsidian. It meant protection and got rid of any negativity. That was something you wanted Chris to always have.
For Matt, you decided to get him amethyst which would get rid of any anxiety and calm the mind. He has always opened up to you about that, how anxious he would get from time to time, so you thought it was the perfect one for him.
You made an attempt to be as clandestine as you could, buying them without the three of them knowing. Once you did, you made sure to keep the small bag hidden from their view.
"Hey, what'd you get?" Chris asked as he saw you walking away from the register with a small paper bag.
"Just a necklace," You shrugged it off with a small smile.
"Nice," He nodded with a smile.
.
Back at their house in Boston, you helped them unpack the van, putting the beach chairs back in their garage and unloading the cooler, pouring the ice out of it. Once you all got inside and showered, putting on some comfy clothes, you were all in the kitchen sharing a couple sodas.
"Oh, I almost forgot.." You slipped out of your chair around the counter and went into Nick's room to fumble through your tote, finding the paper bag with the bracelets in them.
"Here, I got you guys something," You smiled and reached into the paper to hand them each their bracelets. "The meanings of the crystals are on that piece of cardboard on them," You informed.
They looked very happy and grateful that you were thinking of them during a small shopping trip.
"These are so cool, Y/N/N," Chris stated with a smile.
"Oh my God, I love it. I'm gonna wear it everyday," Nick grinned and pulled you into a side hug as you returned the gesture.
"Thanks, Y/N," Matt smiled, you could tell he was truly happy.
"Of course," You grinned, "I thought they matched you each perfectly."
You ended the day watching some movies with them in their living room, on the couch with some bowls of popcorn and other candies. It was one of the nicest days you'd had in a while.
.
a/n: hi, angels! so here on the east coast it's been absolutely fucking HOT and i hate the heat but it inspired me to write this cute little thing! there wasn't much of a plot, i hope you don't mind, i just wanted to capture some fun platonic stuff with the triplets! i love you all so much mwah! — angelina.

TMAGP 5 Thoughts: Getting Babadooked
Honestly, I didn't really vibe with this one. I didn't hate it or anything but it didn't really grab me. I'm not really sure there is a whole lot to say about it either. It's an interesting premise in a cerebral sense but I don't think the incident itself was super compelling.
Spoilers for Ep 5 below the cut.
I think the setup was pretty great but when it got time to do something spooky there wasn't really much of it there. The build up was compelling enough. A movie that's so obscure information on it in any sense is hard to come by. The singular review being not overtly strange but not really a review at all. A contest that's pretty clearly a scam of some sort. Some hints that the theatre was wrong, a single weird staff member hinting at more, spooky popcorn, etc. The movie itself is entirely mundane except that it's a home-movie of your own family, with a detail you never noticed while you were living that movement. Then it just sort of ends.
It really felt like it could've done with a couple more minutes to give it a bit more of an ending. The conclusion, while scary to think about as a full scenario, lacks so much detail and happens so abruptly it's hard to feel like there is really much of a conclusion at all. Just a minute or two of blind panic and a hurried attempt at an escape before they get kidnapped, and presumably, replaced would've been a much better climax which the final post on the site would've helped reinforce. There was even a narrative device worked in that would allow for all sorts of fucked up stuff to happen and still be coherent in the format. [UNINTELLIGIBLE] is just [EXTENDED SOUNDS OF BRUTAL PIPE MURDER] by a different name and could've done a lot of great work in leaving that sort of imaginative space for the listener.
For the office drama portion of the episodel; Klaus being the IT manager before Colin is an interesting detail for sure. Wasn't entirely expecting that but it explains a few things. It doesn't significantly alter any of my previous understanding other than suggest that the precursor to the OIAR's system might be a little bit more fringe. As in if Klaus set up Freddy entirely then the Klaus sheet might not be from a German version of the OIAR. The response 121 came back a lot sooner than I was expecting but still feels a bit like a slow burn.
DPHW Theory: 2377 lines up well enough. It was mostly a weird time where they got compelled to do something. Makes sense, not too exciting.
CAT#R# Theory: CAT2RB is properly filed this time around but still not a whole lot to say. You could assume the ones that were wrong are all wrong and so the tria prima thing is back on the table but with so few data points it's hard to call any of them anomalous. R# could be some sort of scale indicator now though. Rank C incidents supernaturally affect single people or objects, Rank B's can affect larger areas or spread from person/object to person/object, Rank A's are wider still, and Rank S's are on very large scales. That idea fits pretty well with what we've seen so long as you labour under the assumption that the effect an incident can have doesn't map directly with its Rank. Daria's incident ranks higher than the violin but lower than the Institute. Whatever happened to Daria was passed onto her through another means so is higher even though the violin ended up killing more people it never grew beyond just a violin. Where as the Institute is a hole building that's seemingly supernaturally tainted.
Header talk: Disappearance (undetermined) -/- Invitation is fairly interesting. Showing some broader concepts than I think we've previously seen.

Let Me Know - LANY
i struggle a lot on speaking out for myself, i've a lot of insecurities on self esteem too, feeling like i'm far from worth fighting for. and this song, a repeat of 'let me know if there's something i can do to fix it, i can't promise you i'll be waiting, but for you i'll leave everything behind' hits just right for me
youtube

haha this is fun (sarcasm) but okay 👻

(can I be 🐍 anon?) How about a fic where the other's start to slowly notice that Janus is getting more and more comfortable with them and trusting them more. Examples like: they start to notice that they don't have to convince him so hard that they want him around. He starts to relax his outfits a bit until he just shows up in black pants, a big yellow sweater, and signature hat. etc. Ends with happy snake boi getting all the cuddles. - 🐍
this... has taken such a long time... sorry! words: 1961 tags: @idkanameatall @imma-potatoo @girl-with-many-fandoms
The first to realise it was Logan. he had been sat at his desk trying to get some work done. The lights had been turned off a few hours ago and he had been sneaking the occasional glance over to his bed. Janus had come to him that morning not feeling very well, so he had offered to keep an eye on the side to make sure it wasn’t anything serious.
And that it wasn’t, just merely a head cold. But he still didn’t want to wake Janus. The poor side looked exhausted as he slept. that had tripped Logan figuratively up. he had been rather used to Janus just hiding away in his own room rather than coming to here. And that had made him smile… Janus trusted him enough to come to him when he needed help despite being in a venerable state.
He stood up from his desk and walked over to Janus the duvets further up to give the snake some more warmth. he would message Patton soon to bring Janus something to eat. Logan would leave, but he didn’t want Janus to wake up alone.
“m’thanks,” Janus murmured from under the blanket. “it’s all right Janus, go back to sleep for now,” Logan said ruffling the snake’s hair. yeah… he would let Janus rest for now, Logan thought as he sat down to continue his work.
-- the next person to realise it was Patton. They had been on semi good terms since the aftermath of the wedding, but he knew that Janus would need time to warm up to him after all that had happened.
And as he was sitting in the Livingroom, the shinning playing in the background. A sudden thought crossed his mind and he found himself jumping up and making his way to the serpent’s room. the bright yellow door seemed to match along with the others, almost completing the set.
He knocked on the door excitedly. the door opened widely to a rather nervous snake, “hello Patton, may I ask what you need?” “you, me baking cookies!” Patton cheered. Janus rolled his eyes before stepping out of his room, “very well then, it sounds entertaining.”
They walked back down to the kitchen and immediately began to grab things from shelves and storage spaces. peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies. Janus was trying not to show too much excitement. but still Patton could sense it.
And it wasn’t put on, like he used to a few months ago, he could sense the happiness radiating from everyone else… but it was Janus at the moment he could truly sense.
And as he watched Janus sneak a chocolate chip from the packet, he could see the progress. And every second was worth it. and for now, he would make sure it continued only onwards. “come on kiddo, don’t eat all the chips,” Patton giggled as he ruffled Janus’s hair with a smile.
-- the third was Virgil. The two of them had issues that they still needed to sort out. and it was a surprise when he found out the others knew his name. but he knew as soon as he heard that roman had mocked his name, that it would affect him badly. and it had. He had found the snake curled up behind the yellow door.
But now… it seemed the rolls had almost reversed. Virgil wasn’t sure what it was, or why but he had felt his anxiety heighten more than it normally did today. he had found himself sitting on his bed. The room was blacked out by spider curtains, but the sound of nocking on the door had barely been audible over his obnoxiously loud music.
He had told whoever it was to enter. But hadn’t been expecting Janus. and it seemed the side had an outfit change. a black calf length pleated skirt and a bright yellow button up. a small black bowtie finished off the outfit. But of course, he still had his cape and hat.
“nice look,” Virgil murmured as he laid his head back. “you’re not stressed,” Janus said sternly,” don’t move over,” he said rolling his eyes.
Virgil didn’t know what to expect. But definitely not Janus pulling a hidden snake from around his arm. He let out a bizarre noise of concern and or panic, he was yet to decide, as the snake was placed on his arms.
He looked up to Janus with wide eyes, “not the snake…” Janus grinned, “oh… no, the snakes”
Much to Virgil's own amusement as the snake lifted its head and let out a small blep, he could feel whatever was bothering him leave almost immediately. Janus sat down next to Virgil and watched him coo over the snake despite its slightly large size. He found himself feeling years younger, going back to when they could have only been in single digits.
And as he glanced over to Janus he felt as if things had… almost gone back to how things were from before the split. And he felt himself smile. “hey Virge,” Janus said as he took the snake from his arms, “your eyeshadows purple,” he grinned. Virgil playfully nudged Janus in the shoulder, “yeah, okay the snake broke my poor cold heart,” they both found themselves in a fit of laughter.
Yeah. He was going to make sure Janus laughed like that again. After all they had both been through… Janus deserved to feel this happy.
--
Remus had been next. It had been a nock on his door in the middle of the night. he knew it would most likely be one of the more nocturnal sides.
But as he opened the door to see a familiar side in a dinosaur onesie wrap their arms around him. he knew that tonight would be a little different. as Janus let go of Remus, the imaginative side let Janus enter. Sure, they may not be on the best of terms right now. But for Janus to wake him up so late in the night… something had happened.
He watched as Janus sat down on the rather messy bed and pull his head into his knees. “you okay Jannie?” he asked as he sat down next to the snake, “you wanna talk about it?” he got a small head shake. “come on then, you can stay with me the night if you want,” Remus said as he pulled Janus into a side hug. “thank you,” Janus whispered smally from his chest.
It took a few minuets of cuddling for them to finally shift and lie down next to one another. They lied like that for a few minutes before Remus realised that Janus was out cold.
He let out a small silent laugh as he brushed a piece of hair out of Janus’s face. how long had it been since Janus had been so peaceful? Back when they were darks it seemed like the old Jan had disappeared. Replaced with constant worry about his plans and fear of more people leaving.
He missed seeing Janus without a care in the world. But right now, he felt worried. Not much could have Janus to the brink of tears and have him come into his room of all places.
Right now, however, it was best to get some sleep. Knowing Janus, he would be better to talk to in the morning. That and the bags under his eyes almost rivalled Virgil's at this point. So, he was going to let the snake sleep in. they both needed it.
And soon, Remus was asleep. a protective arm wrapped around his baby brother.
-- the final side to realise had been roman. The other sides had been summoned, forcing the two company seekers to sit in the same room together. it wasn’t reluctant. But the tension could still be cut by roman katana. Janus sat there on the opposite end of the sofa looking in a book. it wasn’t a particularly big one. But it could only keep his attention for so long.
“okay, do you want to put on a movie,” he exasperated as he flung the book onto the coffee table. “um, okay. But what?” “anything. just not Disney…” Janus sighed.
Roman rolled his eyes as he stood up and began surfing through the movies and box sets the mid had accumulated over the years. “okay, hear me out- “roman began as he found something and held it up. there in his hands he held up the original four Jurassic movies.
“I’ll grab the popcorn- “Janus said throwing himself of the sofa and rushing to the kitchen.
And forty minuets in, they found themselves tucked under separate blankets and eating unhealthy amounts of sugary treats. roman had begun to think as the time passed. In the time it had taken for them to get the movie on, sit down and sit in silence beforehand. Janus had made no move for snide remarks… and he couldn’t bring himself to say any either. but something did need to be said.
“hey… Janus?” he asked, looking over to the side shoving popcorn in their moth in handfuls. “yes?” came the muffled reply, making roman chuckle.
“I'm… I'm sorry for before,” he said. “listen. If anyone should be apologising, it should be me,” Janus began, holding up a hand before roman could but in, “I was the one who played you like a kazoo at the court and somehow managed to swap the sides view on me. it most likely sent confusion spinning your way, and you lashed out,” he said. “trust me, its okay. And if you really need it… I forgive you.”
Roman looked at Janus who turned back to watching the tv he blinked slowly compared to normal. And a small part of roman felt a warmth swell in his chest. he had been forgiven. That was enough for now. And he felt a million times lighter. “did you know you can see a hand on one of the raptors being led into the kitchen?” roman said as he took a sip of his obnoxious fizzy concoction Janus made. he didn’t know what was in it. nor would he ask. “that I did princey. That I did,” Janus grinned, flinging a piece of popcorn playfully in the creative sides direction.
He had never seen Janus so… happy. Content before. And a small part of him wondered if it would stay that way. he hoped so… no more fighting sounded nice. and at that moment he found himself hoping that never did happen between them. and he knew he would strive to stop it in the future.
But for now, he had a movie to watch.
-- they all sat together, cuddled up in bundles of blankets trying to ward away the cold chill that flooded the mindscape every late autumn and early winter. Janus himself was in the middle of the cuddle frenzy. Pinned down by logans arm over his shoulder, Patton's head leaning against his other and Virgil lying atop them all. Roman sat next to Patton with Remus next to Logan.
He let out a content sigh. This was the warmest winter he had in years. and it felt perfect. They all held cups of warm coco. They had a movie playing. Patton's choice today had been happy death day. And it had sent a smirk of amusement on his face when everyone paled.
“ten out of ten!” Remus cheered as he watched the main character of the move swan dive into a wood chipper.
There were always going to be issues between them all. But for now, he felt content listening to the sides laugh at Remus trying to lighten up the movie. yeah… this was nice.

wait! cola!! what are your hiroto thoughts??
Tam have I ever told you that I would Die For You
THANK YOU FOR ENABLING ME I have. many thoughts about Hiroto. I made a whole thread on twitter about small headcanons I have for them that are supported by pretty much nothing (I only read the wiki; I’ve never even glanced at the blaseball discord and I don’t plan to start now) but I’ll flesh them out here!
Everything’s going under a read more because this is gonna get long boys:
She/they asexual Hiroto!!!! This is not canon (I don’t think?) but the Hiroto roleplaying account on twitter uses she/they pronouns and when I joined blaseball I identified as a she/they asexual so. I’m claiming them
They like to make paracord keychains for all of their friends as a show of love. As soon as Hiroto asks you for your two favorite colors, you know you’ve been accepted. All the Tigers and Beams have one on principle. No one’s really sure where they get the cord from but hey, no one’s complaining.
They hate peppermint tea with a passion which leads to some (playful) fights with Zion Aliciakeyes who absolutely loves the stuff. The Tigers always have a large stash of it in their kitchen though because Zion’s not the only one who likes it, and Hiroto has joked about using their Captain powers to ban it more than once. They probably can’t do that, but no one’s willing to test that theory so the team just tries not to drink it when they’re around.
You know how some colleges have underground tunnels that connect a bunch of their buildings on campus? And students can use them to avoid walking through the blistering cold in the winter? So my grand theory is that, as much as I love the idea of Hiroto’s infamous hole being exactly that, I ALSO love the idea of her hole actually leading to a whole tunnel system that spans the entire blaseball field.
(I'm just secretly obsessed with the idea of Hiroto popping up in centerfield to wake Ren up during a game or appearing next to first base to scare the runner into not stealing second.)
(+ this was @waveridden‘s idea but she 100% also has a direct tunnel to the concession’s stand. She has stolen So Much popcorn.)
Still haven’t finished fleshing out this idea but I like the idea of Hiroto setting up a swear jar-type system once they’re captain where every time Something happens (the Tigers win a game, someone pitches a shutout/hits a homerun, another soul escapes Tartarus, etc, this is the part I haven’t fleshed out can you tell) team members put money in the jar. Then once it’s full or a substantial amount has been collected, the team gifts the entire jar to Aldon Cashmoney, who typically gets so excited that ve uses that money to treat the whole team to a really nice dinner.
Hiroto has the “Friend of Crows” modification so I’ve decided this translates to them absolutely loving crows. She considers sightings of crows to be lucky and will go out of her way to give them little treats and food when she can. Half the popcorn she steals from the concession stands is just for the crows.
Okay I still don’t know if pomegranates are revered or hated down in Tartarus because of the whole Persephone thing, but either way, Hiroto is the only person in the world without an intense love for the fruit who actually doesn’t mind taking the time to prepare the seeds. They don’t even end up eating it half the time; they’ll just leave a bowl out in the common space for other people to eat as they move through the day.
They adore arcades and playing old-timey video games, but they especially love pinball machines and they’re scary good at playing them too. (I’m looking at the official lore for them and apparently if a ball gets thrown into their hole, lights and ringing occurs, so that’s my justification.)
That’s all I’ve got for headcanons right now! I also just have a lot of thoughts about them as a player....like the fact that they stepped up voluntarily as Captain after Moody Cookbook was incinerated?? That’s so much pressure?? Especially since Moody was so beloved and they’re, unfortunately, not as renowned? I imagine that would be Such A Stressful position to be in—to PUT yourself in!—but it was so clearly done out of love for the team, and then for them to turn around and lead the Tigers all the way to the championships that same season???? I just. Wow. Them.
Also the fact that Hiroto has been on the Tigers since Season 1 so they’ve seen all the wins and losses, including Yazmin, Moody, Landry.....can’t imagine that doesn’t start to weigh on a person
I like to think that they’re one of the wisest people in blaseball as a result of this. I mean She’s Seen Some Shit. (But don’t let anyone know that; they have a reputation to uphold.)
Alright. That’s it for real. I love Hiroto Wilcox a normal amount.

hey if you're not too busy I was wondering if u had any idea why khr is such a popular fandom??? it isn't that structurally sound and theres a lot of plot holes???? and the anime happened 10 years ago with no movement since????? i mean i adore the series but i only got into it because of the relatively large fandom and i'm sort of confused as to what attracts all these people to it. do you have any ideas what makes khr so popular and long-lasting in fandom?
There’s a few really specific answers at play, here.
First of all; Amano’s writing style is really, really absurd and unpredictable. If you think of really out-there shounen series, like, uhhhh, Helk? You read Helk, and it’s different, but once you get to the angel raids, you essentially know exactly what this writing style is doing. You go, “oh, yeah, I’ve seen this before”. Power of friendship rallying, everyone has to come to an understanding but the threat won’t stop escalating, everyone gets a het ship, tons of twists you don’t expect but also don’t have any sort of impact anyway, lackadaisy pacing as we head towards the climax that undermines what’s left of the shitty twists, etc etc etc
When Amano gets going, though, you aren’t going to go “oh, yeah, I’ve seen this storytelling style before”. You go “...................huh?”
Probably the best example of this is like, every resolution of an arc she’s ever done ever? Mukuro's arc being this underwhelming take-turns battle arc culminating in Tsuna getting fucking superpowers and Mukuro stabbing out his own eye with his fingers to summon snakes and ALSO he possesses all of Tsuna’s friends and THEN mysterious cloaked bandage gentlemen appear to take everyone to prison.
EVERYTHING about the final fight is interesting. It’s like an exact inversion of One Piece. There’s no big power moment, no grand buildup, just predictable boring shounen crap and then “...........................huh?”. It never drags, never outstays its welcome, just pops in, gives you a kiss, and leaves your expectations thoroughly jostled.
The Future arc is the extreme end of this principle, where everything is boring as SHIT and about as average shounen as you could get. It’s like Amano read D.Gray-man and went “I want to do this, but really bad”. And then halfway through she suddenly starts easing in her clusterfuck of cool shounen ideas, and you’re left with nothing but the need to go “fuck it, okay, I’m down”.
SECOND of all, Amano uses the same principle as Season 1&2 BBC Sherlock; explain nothing, expand on the most interesting possible aspect, look cool doing it. It’s all flash and glamour, and there’s CLEARLY some sort of structure behind these shallow facsimiles of charactes and worldbuilding, but you never get to see it. Amano just slapped you on the back and went “yeah, no, go nuts. Write whatever you want. Sky’s the limit.”  You can just fuck about and the possibility of you being objectively wrong is startlingly close to zero. This is the main contributor to the longevity; because it went on for so long, expressed so much, yet explored so little, it has absurd lasting power on a thoughtpiece engine.
LASTLY AND MOST IMPORTANT: The characters. Amano sets up a framework, loads tons and tons of quirks onto them, winds them up, and watches them go. Every single major character has a second layer to them, but they all start out as easy-to-understand cutouts that you can really get comfortable with before their secondary layer is actually explored. Like, Hibari? He comes off as a powerful, authoritative smirking bastard who values his school more than the safety of his peers when he first shows up, but by the time he’s part of the main cast he’s a selfish, short-tempered petulant teenager easily threatened by things he cannot crush, but constantly validated by his ability to crush things that serve a challenge. He likes tiny animals and hamburger steak. Amano never draws attention to this, he kind of just exists in that space. Gokudera’s obsession with cryptids never comes into play as an actual joke until he thinks he’s actually met one, and his dumb teenager secret code isn’t important until the Future arc.
The most important aspect of all that is these quirks and facets of their personalities make sense. Gokudera seems EXACTLY the type of person to write secret codes and be obsessed with cryptids and alt culture; he’s a tryhard who feels like he has to over-perform to belong anywhere. Yamamoto is the PERFECT weird, kinda murder-y assassin type; he does that absurd baseball shit, constantly exhibits extreme thinking, and he consistently fails to have an emotional reaction to things that get everyone else in the sweats. I think the only arresting emotions Yamamoto is willing to have are “oh, shit” and “cold, blinding rage”.
This kind of character writing is HUGELY appealing to teens, and is just generally....really good overall anime character writing? I think it might be why no one ever gave a shit about Ryouhei until the future arc where he was competent and hot; Ryouhei had no real facets beyond “reliable, excitable”. The Future arc had him calm down until you could see all his more complex traits, like “socially aggressive” (this one especially was misunderstood to be “I LOVE MY SPORT” before the future arc), “paternal”, and “good at handling social conflicts”. Ryouhei is shaped like a friend. A friend who refuses to let you deny his friendship. We’re in this together. Get back here I said WE’RE IN THIS TO
And, of course, all the characters react to each other in different ways and put different levels of focus on different character traits; Gokudera focuses on Yamamoto’s lack of ability to grasp grave situations, while Reborn focuses on that weird murder shit. Haru focuses on Bianchi’s reliability and amiability towards emotionally sensitive people, while Yamamoto focuses on her hostility and threatening disposition (probably because she visibly doesn’t like him, but you get what I mean).
So basically...
Weird-ass non-standard plot progression that denies convention: The Hook
An inability to build on overstuffed world: Staying Power
Easy-to-comprehend characters that have multiple facets played against in a variety of ways: Maintained positive interest
You might notice Amano’s second series, elDLIVE, is significantly less good; this is mostly because it presents either an interesting character with a simple facet (Chuuta is afraid of being a burden and screwing up when people are depending on him, is a homemaker) or a boring character with an interesting facet and then refuses to establish quirks or engaging character details. Veronika was kinda neat at introduction; she plays fair and doesn’t value pride over being fair to others, but that literally never comes into play again or reflects in her later personality. Chuuta? Just kinda automatically learns how to not be a burden when he finds out (Spoiler) his friends aren’t dead, and it never really comes up again. He just has a regular old ambition now. All the characters are reacted to in roughly the same way, with no real bias beyond “unpleasant trait bothers me” and “pleasant trait engages me”. The aliens are pretty much the same; we get ZERO signs of a culture or political climate until Brick goes to the space council with the doctor.
I still like elDLIVE, because it’s poorly-explored unpredictable popcorn storytelling where all the twists carry themselves well and the latest arc is actually pretty good, but KHR is better, even though there’s so much more to hate about it.
