watching this clip again and thinking about girlhood and reflection and time and gender roles. like, i see my 7-year old niece, and it's gut-wrenching to watch her be pushed into the same eldest-daughter patterns of performance and forced perfection that i was as a kid, knowing what waits for her and yet not being able to save her.

it was honestly so much better than i thought it would be. it’s a lot of work, and i won’t downplay that. just constant reading and studying, often at the expense of sleep and rest. but it absolutely flew by. i got my final grades back this past week and it really sunk in that i did it. it definitely took the first semester to settle into the groove of it, and a lot of overthinking that i was making a terrible mistake. but if you’re willing to put in the work and can find a solid way to cope with the stress then it is absolutely worth it. people talk smack about lawyers but it is super rewarding knowing that we can help people in some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

I have a lot of other things that I need to spend money on first but the more I think about it the more I want to get an actual setup for digitising sewing patterns. My current setup is fine for doing it occasionally but a couple of hundred dollars of laser-engraved acrylic and a decent camera would really speed up the process, and my friends who actually did fashion design at uni have pointed out that there are drafting papers available with 1 inch grids already on them that would make it easy enough to copy off a pattern using the grid without anyone ever needing to print them out.

What’s more, original copies of a couple of patterns that are seemingly pretty big sellers as reproductions are currently on auction on ebay, and I would very much like to upload my own reproductions for free. I know that it is immensely petty, but I am dying to see what the reproduction seller’s response is.

#we devoted some time on Sunday to doing disparaging dramatic readings of their copyright notices #which they 100% cannot enforce and 200% cannot enforce if I start from an original anyway #a 1.2m sheet of clear acrylic with one inch lines and a matching white sheet for the back and some screws to hold the two together #with the pattern pieces sandwiched between #will mean I can photograph vertically which will make it much easier to reduce distortion #which is currently my big struggle #I take a photo and then need to spend 2 hours correcting the wonkyness and cleaning up the image to be printable #but if I can just get a good non-distorted image with nice clear lines #then I can just upload the image and people can copy it off by hand #if I can get it down to under half an hour per pattern I could get a decent chunk of my cooler vintage patterns online pretty quickly #theoretically people could lend me their patterns to digitise on the condition that we share them #maybe we could make that stupid post that claimed that the vintage pattern wiki had all the patterns a reality

I'd like to introduce to everyone this horrid thing I created about a year ago but haven't shown many people yet (probably for the best).

This is Baby. AKA The Monster. AKA Sight Tremendous and Abhorred, AKA Vile Insect, AKA A Thing Such As Even Dante Could Not Have Conceived, etc, etc. It's made from bits of scrap fabric I scrounged from various sources and is roughly the size of a human toddler. Its design is based on Mary Shelly's original descriptions of Frankenstein's creature.

But that's not all! Behold!

You can dissect this little abomination to reveal a full set of crocheted, knitted, and scrap fabric organs, all hand-stitched by yours truly!

It has a heart, stomach, lungs, liver, small and large intestine, kidneys, bladder, and, of course, a brain! So it can ponder the horrors of its own existence!

I used this pattern by Less Than Three for the heart. I ended up felting it because I screwed up most of the stitches (I was relatively new to crochet at the time). The result was a bit of a blobby mess, but oh well.

So yeah. This thing lives in my house now (my family hates it). I have yet to reap the full consequences of my hubris.
