The hard part about journaling: forgetting to do it 😓 I decided I wanted to practice my german this evening, so i opened my drawer of resources and started looking through. Decided to take a look at my journal and see what was in there, turned to the bookmarked page to see I completely forgot about the “Ein Satz pro Tag” challenge i made for myself. I’ve missed most of March! Haven’t even made the header or numbers in pen! Funny thing is, the last time I wrote in it was March 8th and the sentence is “Heute schreibe ich “Ein Satz pro Tag” von 18.02 bis 08.03” because i forgot about it in February too!
Truth is journaling is still new to me and not a habit I have. it’s hard to keep up with. I do have a log I keep for every day, marking how I’ve interacted with German (studying, listening, reading, etc).
I made this challenge to get comfortable using more complex language, and to talk about my day. I am okay with not writing in it every day, but i Do want a sentence for each day. Whether I write that sentence the day of or a week later doesn’t matter to me. The “rules” I set for myself are simple:
One sentence for each day of the year
Sentences are entirely from my own head (no outside help)
No corrections the same day as writing. I’ll go through when I’ve learned more and correct them
No repeat sentences
Anyways, i’ll get the hang of this sometime. For now though, I have 2 weeks of sentences to think up 👍 (and if anyone has any tips for a forgetful neurodivergent brain…)

Gestern habe ich angefangen auf Deutsch zu schreiben.
Yesterday I started writing in German.
Finally working on my goal of writing my thoughts out in German. I’m practicing using full sentences that are more complex.
The rest of February is a bit busy as a friend is visiting and I’m not sure how I’ll keep up with my studies yet, but maybe instead I’ll be able to practice speaking with them.

No Zero Days 1-7/365
Keine null Tage 1-7/365
Saw this challenge and it matched up with one of my learning goals so I’m joining! I’ve been trying to get into the habit of doing something for german every day. Posting daily feels daunting to me so instead I’m planning to do it at least once a week as part of my reflection and study review.
Tumblr media
This week I did very little, which at first I felt like I wasn’t reaching my goal. But I truly have done something every day. I want to intentionally consume German either through speaking, listening, reading, or writing. Since I live with native speakers, I’ve decided to not count hearing their conversations unless I’m actively paying attention to their wording. Below is my review of the week and what I can recall.
The 1st through the 3rd I did my minimum, either looking at vocabulary, duo, watching a video, something small and for 5 minutes (or likely less). On the 4th I did a bit more, I looked up words for a topic (Die Astronomie, Die Sonnensystem) and started a new vocabulary list (about 30m). The 5th was my longest day this week, I did one of my German units which takes me an hour sometimes more. The 6th I watched a few videos in the morning for learning tips, and later listened to a German streamer. Today I reflected on what I learned earlier in the week and reviewed vocabulary.
Completing 1-2 units a week is another goal of mine. I worked on unit 10 - Die Uhrzeit. I practiced asking for and telling the time, writing about leisure activities, and creating more complex sentences. My bf checked my writing for me and I only had 2 mistakes! I was really excited about it.

No Zero Days 42-68/365
Keine null Tage 42-68/365

I haven’t posted about this for a month 😅
February ended up being a hard month to study. I went to Berlin February 15-16th, and we had a guest for almost 3 weeks. I wasn’t able to do much as I have a really hard time doing things when other people are around - especially studying. After our guest left, I was back in Berlin at that first weekend of March. Since we had a guest, my main source of German was listening for those 3 weeks. I got really unmotivated but am now trying to get back into it.
I’m going to recap a bit of what the past month has been like for German learning. The last book lesson I completed was unit 13. I worked on that Feb 7th and again Feb 17th. I started watching the series Dark! I finished the first season and I’m going to continue soon. I really like it so far. In my chart, I reduced the times for most days as I didn’t feel like I was actively listening or paying attention.
Tumblr media
Yesterday, I started watching Nico’s weg on youtube and taking notes. I’m understanding more and it makes me feel better considering the past month.

No Zero Days 32-41/365
Keine null Tage 32-41/365

I haven’t posted about this in a while so here’s what I’ve done in February so far! I started keeping a little digital log to accompany each day as well. It simply has the day, activity, and how long I did it. I’m starting to get at least 30 minutes a day after only a month! I’m also participating in a little listening challenge for February. I’m trying to increase my input of German by listening to anything I can find.
Tumblr media
I finished a youtube playlist of beginner German to review and practice speaking. I’m looking for podcasts to play while I do other things. If anyone knows any good podcasts of native German speakers please share! I don’t mind if it’s a bit more advanced as long as it’s all in German. Most of what I find switches between German and English and that’s just not what I’m looking for.

No Zero Days 22-31/365
Keine null Tage 22-31/365
My goal is to study German for 30 minutes to an hour every day. Not necessarily in one sitting. I also want to complete 1 chapter from my workbook a week.
Tumblr media
In January, I was successful most days! (yay!!) I’m feeling rather proud of myself for this. There were several days where I really didn’t want to do anything, but I managed to at least review flashcards or complete a few lessons in an app. As for my workbook, I usually finish a chapter in 1 sitting, but recently found it more beneficial to split it into 2 or 3.
Session 1: Go through bulk of the chapter, note new words and grammar
Session 2: Complete any writing or speaking activities in the chapter
Session 3: Review & make corrections
I went from working for an hour straight once a week on 1 topic, to 1.5-2 hours within a week and half. Not only can I remember what I learned better, but I began noticing mistakes in previous writing. I usually have 2 sessions within 1 week and count that as having reached my goal. The 3rd session usually ends up being a few minutes, then I move on to whatever else I’m studying. Logging and journaling daily is new to me, and I still haven’t gotten into it, but boy do I get excited when I fill in the colors on my chart.
Tumblr media
rambling below
I have been out of work since August and don’t go to school. This is the longest I’ve been without a routine in 10 years. It has been difficult for me to create my own routine and a study plan. I thought having more free time would make learning German easier (completely forgetting that I have mental hindrances). I have been working towards indulging in daily German for 2-3 months now but January has been the first month where I intentionally used or studied German every day for at least 5 minutes. I’m working on using full sentences snd expressing myself. Hopefully I can get more practice in the coming weeks

Last week’s learning! I’ve noticed I tend to do less Sunday through Tuesday with Wednesday and Thursday being more productive. Three days I studied for over an hour!
I studied flashcards through GermanPod101 and my handwritten ones, used duolingo for quick review, read 3 short stories and practiced their vocabulary, attempted German tongue twisters, and completed unit 11 of my book. I started keeping a log of each study session. I write the day, activity, resource, and time I spent on it.

Hello
I'm not sure if you have posted about this topic already
I am nonbinary and have been learning German for awhile now and I am looking to move to german in the next two years. As someone who is nonbinary what has your experience in Germany been? I have heard mixed things about how accepting they are of nonbinary folks.
If this ask is too personal or you don't want to answer, feel free to ignore
I hope you have a wonderful day!
hi! sorry about this (very) late reply as i’ve been off tumblr for a while, but i’d be happy to tell you my experience!
Overall, I’ve had no issues. I am more masculine/neutral presenting, and only people close to me (and my online profiles) actually know I identify as nonbinary. When I started working in Germany, I wasn’t very comfortable sharing my identity as I’ve heard of the mixed feelings for nonbinary people. I was lucky my job had a large number of queer employees, and I could hear how they talked about gender. Many seemed perfectly fine with trans folks, but I’m not sure how many even knew of non-binary as a term. I didn’t share I was non-binary until I was talking about it with a coworker from the US. That’s when I was told there was some talk among them wondering if I was trans, but no one asked me about it.
I think it will depend on what city you’re in & who you interact with. I’ve never had a stranger ask me or give me trouble, as people tend to mind their business and mostly just stare (but Germans stare at everyone, no matter what, you get used to it). If you have any medical needs or take hormones, there are doctors you can go to, it’s just a matter of finding the right one - likely in bigger cities.

congrats in starting to write in german!!! last three questions before the 14th!!
1. three good qualities about yourself?
2. favourite greek god?
3. what do you think people remember you for? like, oh yes, the friend who...
-your secret valentine 💕💕 (i always forget to sign the asks!!)
hii!! thank u! so 1. i’d say i’m a good listener, patient, and curious. i’ve always been a person who listens to others stories and anything they need to say. that is probably what’s led me to be patient. and i’ve always been very curious and eager to learn
2. i don’t think i have one! greek gods were always something i wanted to look into but never delved into enough.
3. hmm that is a good question. i think maybe for being artsy? from strangers though that i’ve seen once or twice again, i’ve been told they remember me for being kinda chill/relaxed (at least compared to those we were with)

hii again!!
now i'm curious, did you start learning german because you were moving to germany or did you move to germany because you liked the language/culture?
i have three questions today too.
1. what is The Love Song for you? can be about a breakup, about friends, falling in love... but the one that you feel captured the feeling the best (if you have more than one that fits the criteria do share them all please :D )
2. do you have pinterest? if so (and if you feel comfortable doing so) add a screenshot of how your feed looks when you open the app.
3. what is your favourite german piece of media?
hi!! I started learning German for my boyfriend (who is German native) and eventually I decided to move here. I started learning more seriously once the move was solidified.
1. The first song I thought of was Pancakes for Dinner by Lizzy McAlpine. I first heard it probably a year ago at my university’s dance show and the dancer was a friend of mine. Their dance with this song was so beautiful. It has since been my favorite lovey song
2. I only recently started using pinterest again and it looks like this! It’s usually crochet/knit related, but sometimes journaling & nature
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. that’s a good question! i had to think about this for a bit as I haven’t found lots of native german media I like and/or can follow. Mostly i’ve listened to german music recommended by friends and my bf. My favorites have been LaFee and Cro.
Thank you for the questions!! <3

No Zero Days 8-14/365
Keine null Tage 8-14/365

Spent a lot more time this week immersing myself! I finished a unit in my workbook and started the next one. The last 3 days I didn’t spend as much time learning n from my workbook but instead with shows, youtube, and audiobooks. I’m trying to get myself to listen to German more and repeat so I can practice speaking.
On the 10th I added a page to my bullet journal to write one sentence a day in German (Ein Satz pro Tag auf Deutsch). I’m writing one sentence however I think it would be and not allowing myself to look up if it’s correct just yet. I’m thinking of coming back later on and seeing if I can correct them myself or write the same sentence with more advanced words.
Tumblr media
Also tried playing scrabble in german.. very hard to come up with words out of random letters 😪
Overall it was a good week for just listening and reading German without focusing on grammar or translations. Next week I want to finish my next unit, and read one of the kids books I have out loud to practice speaking.
