i know that everyone says this but the mw3 rm soap death was shit awful . looking back at it, logistically , it shouldn’t have happened .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so the first injury in this was soap being shot in the right shoulder (most likely in joint tendon region) . pretty painful , and if did hit in the area i believe it did , would hinder mobility in the upper right region of the body (neck, arm, some torso muscles .
HOWEVER !! soap has proven to be shot in similar or worse regions in other missions and has been able to carry through and complete objective alive .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what you are seeing is a move that should have killed makarov instantly . this is a stab performed to the external jugular vein (and due to soaps experience , possibly a carotid artery . i was taught this attack in weapons studies , my friends in the military were also taught that this region is one of the quickest ways to krill . (not giving murder advice just trying to prove a point please don’t ban me) not to mention this is immensely painful . realistically , mans should have dropped then and there . not to mention there were sas soldiers who should have opened fire the second they saw him anyways ??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now THIS is the part that pisses me off the most. see makarov’s lock ? that actively engages the trapezius and scalene muscles , which would be DIRECTLY affected from the stab would . combined with the fact that soap is (estimated) 80-90 kgs , he would not have been able to perform that lock let alone hold it .
and with soap being part of the fucking MILITARY , he should have been able to get out of that by a) breaking the locked arm and using the other hand to either disarm / kill makarov (which he should have been able to handle , especially judging by the fucking alone mission) or b) hitting the back of makarovs knee to send them both to the ground, slip under him to not break his arm and hit em w the buck+trap+flip to get a vantage, and then continue the fight from there, which should be very short anyways considering that makarov’s bleeding out faster than a fucking SNAKE STRIKE . and somehow with the majestic force of activision giving less than 2 fucks about all the characters and medical theory there , makarov manages to get a straight aim and shoot soap straight through the ear ??!! and then bolt past a fuck ton of bullets that should have BEEN FIRED ON HIM EARLIER and then hurl himself INTO A TRAIN . if you wanted to kill of one of the leads in the modern warfare series , do it in a way that is well written and thought out and accurate .

Warming oceans likely to shrink the viable habitat of many marine animals -- but not all
Brad Seibel still remembers the headlines from 20 years ago that sounded like a B-rated sci-fi movie: “Invasion of the jumbo squid in Monterey Bay” and the like. He was a postdoctoral scholar at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) at the time.
It was anything but fiction. The voracious eaters, which historically live in more tropical latitudes, showed up off central California in record numbers — fattening their bellies with hake, rockfish, and other commercially important species to the dismay of local fisherman. Scientists figured their arrival had to do with a combination of climate change and overfishing, but the details were fuzzy.
Now a professor and marine physiology expert at the USF College of Marine Science, Seibel recently published a paper in Nature Climate Change that sheds light on those long-ago headlines. It connects the dots pertaining to animal metabolism that he’s collected over 20 years and seven research cruises in the Gulf of California, Mexico — and adds a new chapter to the story of how some animals may respond to the warming oceans.
“The basic narrative in recent years has been that as the ocean warms and loses oxygen, animals in it will be chased out of their native habitat and move into cooler waters in more northern latitudes,” Seibel said. “But this is an oversimplification.”
Not all marine animals will react to changing conditions in the same way.
Seibel co-authored the publication with his former graduate student, Matt Birk, now a professor at Saint Francis University in Pennsylvania. The study is the first to drill down into the relationship between oxygen, temperature and the metabolic requirements of vertical migrators, which include billions of marine animals from tiny crustaceans called krill to the six-foot-long jumbo squid. Seibel and Birk used modeling to understand how six species of krill and the jumbo squid would respond metabolically to the varying parameters approximating day and night habitats.
advertisement
“Vertical migrators buck the basic narrative, which is based largely on studies of coastal animals,” Seibel said.
As the oceans warm squid and other vertical migrators living in tropical zones are likely to expand their habitat northward — but not necessarily leave their native tropical zones.
That’s what likely happened 20 years ago in Monterey, Seibel said. An El Nino event temporarily brought warmer water to the coast. (Think of it as a relatively short-lived model of climate change.) The warmer water allowed the squid to expand their range northward, where they took advantage of new food sources — heavily impacting the local fisheries — even though food was plentiful back in the more tropical latitudes.
“It wasn’t that they didn’t have enough oxygen or that it was too hot for them further south; before the El Nino event it was too cold for them up north” — a nuance related to their metabolic requirements that matters, Seibel said.
Vertical migrators live very different lives than coastal species, which experience a fairly consistent supply of oxygen in waters well mixed with the atmosphere. Migrators live at depth during the day, where it’s cold and dark and there’s less oxygen, and they travel hundreds of meters toward the relatively warm ocean surface at night to eat, where oxygen is plentiful and when it’s safer to forage.
“This study is a good example of the fact that the conclusions we often draw from well-studied — and easy to catch — organisms may not hold true for the greater diversity of species and lifestyles found in the oceans,” Birk said.
It turns out that the effect of temperature on the metabolic rates of vertical migrators is 4-5 times greater than for most coastal species. When at depth, the squid, for example, don’t do much at all. When migrating to shallower waters for a meal, their metabolic rate skyrockets, said Seibel.
Modeling that incorporates heightened effects of temperature on the metabolic rate of vertical migrators suggests that climate change will expand the available habitat for vertical migrators to the north and south by as much 10-20 degrees of latitude by the end of the century, Seibel said.
“We really need to drill down into animal physiology and better understand the ways that various species evolve and adapt to environmental conditions,” said Seibel.

You will turn back, sweet krill of hope. You will chose the Sky instead
In the Season of Arrivals the Darkness spoke with us, while Savathun tried to intervene. In Beyond Light, the Darkness granted Guardians with Stasis, giving access to it's powers as an argument to the Sky - if the Sky posits that given the chance, individuals will choose goodness and decency, the Darkness gave the active avatars of the Light the chance to prove the Darkness' thesis. That, when the going gets tough, all things turn to the logic of the blade.
The Dark Future is the conclusion of the Darkness' argument against the Light. It is proof that the chosen of the Light, Guardians, will, like all life, turn to the brutal and simple logic of the Deep and become conquerors and butchers. It was quite a move on the board by the Deep, by giving Guardians Stasis. As far as we know, no other species has been directly blessed by the Light in the same was as Humanity. We know the Ammonite were aided by the Traveler through 'paracausal weapons' and that the Traveler indirectly blessed the Harmony through it's manipulation of gravity and spacetime, but until Earth and Humans, there had not been, as far as we know, direct wielders of the Light.
So the Darkness reached out to the direct avatars of the Light and gave them a nugget of it's power. A power move.
Now - with Witch Queen, we see that Savathun has a ghost, has the light, and more - so does her brood. The phrasing around it is couched in terms of 'stealing the light' or in some way wresting control of it, but that's through biased voices like Ikora. I suppose we may see for sure this season, depending on the conclusion, but that remains in the future.
However. Consider Savathun. She was the first adopter of the worms. She led Aurash and Xi Ro to the worm gods beneath Fundament. She threw herself fully into the deal with the worms. In time, Oryx may have surpassed her as the truest, and closest adherent to the Deep, as seen by his actions, his theories and the Touch of Malice, but Savathun was the first.
What greater weapons of the Darkness were there than the Hive? This trio for a billion - billions? - of years have enacted the will of the Deep across the universe. Untold species, unimaginable complexity, all of it cut away by the sword.
But then Savathun started to question. She started to wonder. She started to buck the tenets of the Deep. She doubted her worm, and she had from long ago in the Books of Sorrow. She sought ways around it, loopholes - she betrayed the Darkness. Oryx never questioned his role or his position. He embraced the prospect of death, faithful that whoever slew him was merely doing the work of the Deep and helping the universe to it's final, brutal shape. If he died - he was meant to, as the Deep teaches. Savathun never accepted this.
And now, at long last, she turned her sight on the Light. Savathun wants to live at all costs. At all costs. This has been her driving force since she was a little krill all those eons ago.
But if one wants to live at all costs, is not the answer the Deep? After all, to become the Final Shape is to become synonymous with existence, to be the last man standing at the end of all things. No better immortality, right? But Savathun doubts that, despite being so steeped in the Darkness for so long. One who should be completely dedicated to this, but she questions. She isn't like Oryx, or even Xivu Arath as it seems.
So we return to a conversation, spoken by an agent of the Sky to three wayward krill.
—Quick-breeding krill people, I tell you++
++For eons I have watched your struggle—
—Clinging to the sharp edge of survival++
++Balanced between the Deep and the Sky.—
—FOR THIS IS THE DEEP CLAIM—
++Existence is the struggle to exist—
—When the struggle seems lost++
++when the safe place crumbles—
—everything turns to the Deep to survive++
++I REJECT THE DEEP CLAIM++
—You will turn back, sweet krill of hope.±±
++You will choose the Sky instead.—
"Existence is the struggle to exist. When the struggle seems lost, when the safe place crumbles, everything turns to the Deep to survive."
Emphasis mine. From the Leviathan of Fundament, this is the Deep claim. This is the position of the Darkness, which has been proven over and over again.
Savathun has turned on the Deep claim. She has rejected it. She is at the bitter end, when the struggle seems lost, when the safe place crumbles - she has fled her throne. She has left her brood. She is hunted by her own sister, with her brother slain. Her worm's hunger is insatiable. All of her plots and infinite plans have failed. Her murder battery failed. Her Taken were useless. IMBARU is IMBARN'T.
And at the bitter, deadly edge of this desperation, where did Savathun turn? Not to the Deep. She turned to the Light.
Oh, I'm sure she can dress it up however she wants, as sardonic or skeptical or cynical as she likes. But the fact remains that when the cards came down, she abandoned the Deep.
She rejected the Deep claim.
And she chose the Light.
What better retort to the Deep could the Sky possibly supply other than to bless Savathun with the Light? To take one of the fiercest, oldest, deadliest agents of the Darkness and give her the Light? To give her the chance to prove, like all life, that the Deep is not the answer. That there is more than just the mindless struggle of slaughter. This is the Traveler and the Sky's rebuttal to the argument made in Beyond Light. If the Darkness wants to try to tempt Guardians - the Sky can and will prove that nothing is beyond realizing the allure of the gentle nation, ringed by spears.
I hope that this is what occurs, that there is no deception, no stealing, no necromantic trickery. That the Traveler blesses Savathun and her brood with the Light because in the eschatological debate between these two forces, such a move brings the Sky closer to checkmate.
Final thought - but why would we fight Savathun? Why not? The Light doesn't demand, doesn't act, doesn't direct. That's the blessing of the Sky. Freedom of will, of choice, of being. Lightbearers have done atrocities in the past, during the age of warlords. Some do even now. That is part of life, there is good and there is evil. What matters is what you choose. Savathun has spent aeons practicing violence, she's not going to change overnight. But! The question is if she can. If she can prove the thesis of the Sky.
I think that killing Savathun and her brood, in this case, might be the worst possible outcome for the Light.

Happy (late) Birthday Iggy!
[No overlay + rambling under the cut!]
Tumblr media
I know this is extremely late, so it doesn't even feel right to say that it's a birthday drawing anymore... but I liked how it was turning out so much, I couldn't give up on it! Either way, I hope you like it.
I really wanna stop taking so long with my art. I tend to be quite meticulous and also shoot for the stars, which combines into a whole lot of time. Ibis says this one took 60 hours! ToT Though, it wasn't entirely on me this time. I was generally quite busy these past few weeks, with school and other stuff, but I should be able to focus much more on art over the summer!
I've been thinking about posting an art dump tbh, since I've actually accumulated a lot of more light, self-indulgent art that I haven't spent hours perfecting but also like enough to consider sharing. A lot of them are traditional doodles, but there's some digital stuff too. But we'll see how that goes.
Also, this is my first time drawing the whole main cast! I've made doodles of Genzou before, but I think this was my first time ever drawing Bucks! I'm very happy with how all of them turned out, though. I can't even remember the last time I drew a group shot before this! xD
Anyways, bye, I hope you enjoyed the drawing!

Sorry not sorry, Alan ❤️
All credit for FabFiveFeb goes to the amazing @gumnut-logic 💚
Prompt: A memory.
Warnings: Mild strong language.
Genre: Humour.
Characters: Sea Bean & Land Cabbage.

“And that, ladies and gentleman, is a wrap!”
A sigh that somehow managed to bridge the gap between despair and disbelief filtered over the comm channel, “Don’t go Hollywood on me now, Thunderbird Four. Are the targets clear of the danger zone?”
“Yes siree,” came the rather chipper reply, “Hazardous material has been removed and ultrasonic sweeps show no more underwater casualties. Danger zone is officially cleared. Standby for pickup, Thunderbird Two.”
“F.A.B,” came the rich tones of brother Numero Dos, “Can you be Pacific about your location, please?”
“Careful, Virg. I have a license to krill, you know,” Gordon warned playfully, aligning the little yellow sub so that she was within grabbing distance of module four’s cable.
A snort was offered by Virgil in lieu of a verbal reply, “I never knew it was possible to stick one’s head so far up one’s ass. Tell me, what did you have for dinner last night?”
“Same thing as you, bro,” Gordon countered, watching happily as his newly relinquished charges swam off to freedom. An emergency call had come in from a concerned student at the University of Otago claiming that several members of the dolphin pod she was satellite tracking in Kaikoura had run afoul of a discarded fishing net. Ever eager to help an animal in distress and with the right gear at his disposal, Gordon had roused Virgil and politely requested that the engineer taxi him the two and a half thousand miles to New Zealand’s South Island.
A decent number of locals had joined the rescue effort by the time Thunderbird Two arrived on scene, and it was with unbridled joy that they cheered as the last dolphin was cut free by Four’s robotic arms. Aside from managing to dodge an animal welfare bullet, the cetaceans were a tourism magnet and thus, an invaluable source of income for the town.
“Kia ora! Thank you!” a young woman called, scurrying up to shake Gordon and Virgil’s hands, “I’m Mandy Harrell, and on behalf of the IMMA, I just want to say how grateful we are to International Rescue for your help here today.”
Gordon smiled warmly, “I’ve always admired the work of the Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force. The pleasure is all mine.”
“Having two representatives from the world’s most elite rescue organisation here will do wonders for our public image,” Mandy enthused, shaking her head in excited disbelief, “We’re trying to raise enough funds to conduct a clean-up operation along this section of coastline. We suspect the net you just removed is one of several left by a group of unregulated fishermen we apprehended last June. Our goal is to have the first five hundred meters of coast cleared by the time the humpbacks arrive next month, but at the rate things are going, we’ll be several thousand dollars shy of our target.”
A soft series of beeps sounded as Gordon’s comm picked up an incoming call, but he ignored it in favour of giving Mandy his undivided attention. It was probably just John checking in. Or Scott forewarning him that Grandma was cooking and that they were out of laxatives.
“Perhaps we could donate the remainder?” Gordon offered, “I’d be delighted to help you guys in any way that I can.”
Virgil felt apprehension crawl up his spine when Mandy smiled, but didn’t instantly accept the (rather generous) offer that had been had laid down.
“That’s incredibly kind of you, but we like to be as self-sufficient as possible where money is concerned,” the young woman replied, tilting her head to take the sting out of her words, “If you’d be willing to donate your time however, that would be greatly appreciated.”
“Sign me up!” Gordon exclaimed, raising his hand in a similar manner to Scott’s scout oath, “I’m sure Alan can cover for me if I take an extra day off this week. You get that, John? Take me off the roster for tomorrow, please. Forward all emergencies necessitating the use of Thunderbird Four to Alan. I’ll take over his Monday shift next week as compensation.”
“Done and done,” came the smooth reply of the middle brother, “And now we wait for the inevitable tantrum.”
A chuckle bubbled up Virgil’s diaphragm as he adjusted his sash and fixed Mandy with an inquisitive gaze, “So, what will you have him doing? Shovelling seaweed? Litter picking? Seagull whispering?”
Mandy let loose a laugh that sounded a fraction forced, “Not quite. We’re a new partner of Otago University and recently signed a collaboration agreement with their School of Arts for the upcoming semester. We were going to host a series of life drawing sessions out on the open water, but the university probably won’t commit after the publicity this incident will undoubtedly be on the receiving end of. Do either of you have any experience with modelling by any chance?”
Virgil had less than a second to intervene before Gordon started uncontrollably word vomiting.
“Oh yes!” the aquanaut swanked, preening like a peacock, “Vogue, Armani, Cosmo, Grazia, Gucci, Vanity Fair, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo, Fendi, Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Balmain, Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and KFC have all had a piece of this perfectly symmetrical face over the years.”
The squeal that tore out of Mandy had Virgil wondering if she was as smart as her paper qualifications claimed. A discreet search of IMMA on his comm gauntlet had revealed a string of abbreviations after her name that rivalled the Cambodian alphabet, yet she seemed perfectly willing to believe that Gordon really had modelled for all of the companies he’d just listed.
In truth, the closest the fourth Tracy had come to modelling was when his swim trunks had ripped during a family trip to the Seychelles. The scathing email that Scott had penned to the CEO of Speedo had been accompanied by multiple pictures of said trunks (both on and off their owner), along with the threat of legal action should Gordon end up deported for ‘indecent exposure’.
“Perfect!” Mandy effused, her green eyes glowing with excitement, “Ticket sales will skyrocket with a member of International Rescue as the subject! I must ring Shona and tell her to re-book the town hall.”
Valuable blood drained from Gordon’s face as the reality of what he’d inadvertently signed up for dawned on him like a sunrise in hell, “Uh, I thought you just wanted me as a poster boy for your open water sessions? Y’know…posing with porpoises, photobombing seals…helping to smooth over the bad publicity, right? Getting people to focus on the good rather than the bad?”
Mandy shook her head, her brown curls bucking in the breeze that was buffeting the shore, “It’ll be all over the news that it was you guys who saved the day, not us. International Rescue’s presence here is the catalyst for a financial surge we can’t afford to miss. I’m begging you. The dolphins are begging you. Please, help us to help them.”
Gordon chewed his lip. While he was probably the brother least phased at the prospect of getting his kit off for charity, he knew that Scott would be on him like shit on velcro if his derriere ended up plastered across the front of every global news channel in all its bare glory.
“Thunderbird Two, a priority call just came in from a couple of wreck divers in Chuuk Lagoon, Micronesia,” John’s voice, ever calm and authoritative, served as both a welcome distraction and an excuse to leave, “Alan and Kayo just got called away to a flood in Columbia and Scott is on a conference call with Colonel Casey, which makes you two our closest and only available option.”
“Please say you’ll come?” Mandy wheedled, panic slipping into her voice when Virgil and Gordon began to walk towards Two’s cockpit platform, “It’ll just be for a few of hours, and there’ll be a free lunch.”
That got Gordon’s attention. He’d been prepared to agree for the sake of the dolphins and inbound humpbacks, but the promise of free food sealed the deal.
“Ten o’clock tomorrow!” the aquanaut yelled, waving as the platform began to ascend, “I’ll need a toasted cheese on granary and five of whatever your equivalent of Celery Crunch bars are!”
“Uh, Gordon?” Virgil’s voice was low and gentle, a stark contrast to the shrieks of delight Mandy was emitting, “Do I need to remind you about what happened last time you signed up for something like this?”
Any confidence the aquanaut had vanished quicker than a burp in a dust storm as a memory he’d worked hard to suppress began to surface.

Sanctuary B(r)each
LONG POST - This is a chapter of my headcanon story in which a Krill attacks the Sanctuary Islands.
Characters: Rainbird, Reef, Candle, Carillon, Red/Kwan
Rainbird swept the broad edge of their paint-laden thumb in a small arch before switching to paint the manta’s tail with their pinky finger in the inner curve. This bean-shaped simplification of the manta was something they had learned from the wall-art of their ancestors before them, and over time they had worked out the best way to mimic each character with the least amount of strokes. Mantas weren’t the only animals they’d learned to finger-paint with light. Butterflies were a simple ‘x’ with a pinky finger, and birds were a slightly larger drooping ‘x’ with a horizontal line at the base attaching the two bottom points and forming the body.
Rainbird sat back to admire their work. On the cave wall they had painted a vast mural of the Sanctuary and its inhabitants, including their friends Reef and Candle sitting on the beach and holding hands.
“That’s incredible, Rainbird.” Reef whispered appreciatively, resting her hand on the enby’s shoulder and admiring the mural. Candle looked up from where she sat mending an ancient tapestry and grinned. The trio were resting in a small cave in the Sanctuary Islands, or to Reef and Candle, ‘home.’
Many of the caves in Sanctuary hummed with sea breezes, however this little hollow stayed relatively still - enough so that the many candles lighting the room stayed lit at all times. Shelves had been carved into the walls and were decorated with seashells and coral and the floor of the cave was carpeted with tattered flags from the Wasteland or tapestries from the Valley of Triumph. Driftwood had been carved into simple furniture, pillows stuffed with dried grass and sweetly-scented flowers. With the addition of Rainbirds’ mural the cave had become even brighter, filled with the warm orange glow of candles and golden light.
“The paint reacts to flame.” Rainbird said, “That’s why hidden murals seem to come to life when you light a candle near them. The paint will fade a little in time, but with this many candles in here it shouldn’t go out.”
“So that’s how that works.” Candle mumbled as she stitched her tapestry, “I always chalked it up to magic.”
“It can be both.” Reef chuckled and moved to kiss Candle on the forehead, “Understanding the spell doesn’t make it less magical.”
From outside the cave came the ringing of many small bells, soon followed by several distressed voices crying out.
“KRILL! THERE’S A KRILL IN THE SANCTUARY!” came a scream from outside, and soon a chibi with a jester cap came running in, the many bells on their outfit chiming. Their eyes were wide as they looked to Reef. Rainbird knew this chibi was Carillon, a non-verbal child who played the (usually simple) role of guard in the Sanctuary. Their hands were a blur as they signed something only Reef could understand.
“Thank you Carillon,” the turtle-masked woman nodded, “Get as many into the jellyfish caves as possible.”
Candle was on her feet, pulling on her dark cloak and tall pointed hat and grabbing Carillon’s cape before they left. Rainbird sat frozen, looking to Reef for guidance.
“Are there any Krill-Riders in the Sanctuary?” Candle asked Carillon, to which the little jester shook their head ‘no’. Candle cursed softly and dismissed Carillon, the latter quickly rushing out into the tunnels with the ringing of their many silver bells.
“We will have to deal with this.” Reef said gently, pulling Rainbird to their feet.
Rainbird nodded and the trio made their way out of the caves.
The screams were so much louder outside, but they could see Carillon was herding the younger Sky Kids toward the jellyfish caves. The miniature mantas followed the Sky Kids as they fled, cooing softly and fluttering between them to try to keep the children calm as they headed to safety. The mid-sized mantas were scooping up Sky Kids and bringing them too, seemingly making a game of seeing how many kids each could collect.
Rainbird looked toward the Sanctuary entrance in the clouds to see the Dark Dragon twisting in the air like a massive black kite. Its eye was solid red, enraged and without a specific target.
“It’s been enraged by something.” Rainbird looked past it at the many small islands clustered about the cloud gate.
“There’s someone up there.” Candle pointed toward the larger of the floating islands, “Near the Timid Bookworm spirit.”
Rainbird and Reef saw it too, a figure with a red cape stood looking down at the Sanctuary, ignoring the enraged beast that descended upon them.
“It’s the kid from the forest.” Rainbird frowned, “The one with the staff.”
“We can deal with them after we deal with the Krill.” Reef replied, “One thing at a time. Can we trap it in the caves?”
“No.” Candle shook her head, “We don’t know which caves the Sky Kids may be hiding in.”
There was a booming call as the giant manta above Sanctuary spotted the descending Dark Dragon.
“Will she be okay?” Rainbird asked, watching the manta fly at the Krill with more purpose than they had ever seen.
“For a while, but she’ll need help.” Candle muttered, “Look, I think we can wedge the Krill into the narrow passage through the top of the mountain. Sky Kids don’t go in there much and it’s unlikely any are hiding in there.”
“Reef,” Candle took her girlfriend’s hands, “I love you, but you aren’t the quickest flyer...”
“I’m aware. So what should I do?”
“Head up the crevasse. Make sure there’s no one in there, and when we have tired the Krill, get ready to draw it in. Even if you lose your wings you’ll be able to run through the mountain.”
Reef kissed Candle, nodded and started hiking up the mountain.
“Have you ever rode a Krill, Rainbird?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Find the edges of the plates in the exoskeleton and dig your fingers in. They’re surprisingly squishy if you can get under their armour.”
Rainbird winced. That didn’t sound pleasant, “How long does it take to tire a Krill?”
“Depends on the type of Krill, but this is a smaller one which means it will be fast. Try to aim for a geyser if you fall to half your wings.. Any other questions?”
”No.”
The giant manta let out another booming call as it rammed the Krill, and the Krill clawed at it while making its eerie crackling.
Candle grabbed Rainbirds’ hand and crouched on one knee. One of the stars on the back of Candles’ cape sparked like fireworks and went out as a huge swirling gust centred on the jackal-masked woman rocketed the pair into the air with surprising speed. Rainbird almost got whiplash but quickly opened their wings and felt the zephyr hurtling them upward. At the top of the updraft Candle beat her wings, gaining considerable height and speed.
“Remember, get between the plates.” Candle shouted over the rushing wind and releasing Rainbirds’ hand. Candle beat her wings again to reorient and launching herself toward the Krill’s face and the screaming manta.
Rainbird dipped their left wing and swung left to approach the Krill from behind. Thanks to Candles’ launch they still had all their wing charges - if they fell they were going to need them.
Candle swept around and over the giant manta, coming down on the Krills’ head and dropping an elbow directly on the dark creatures’ eye. The Krill screamed and reared back, releasing the manta.
Avoiding the Krill’s tail as it flailed Rainbird landed lightly on the beasts’ back and started clambering up toward the bucking dragon’s head. They climbed slowly but surely, making sure they had a good grip with each hand before moving the other. The Krill’s armour was thickest on their back behind their head, but that was also where the gaps in their exoskeleton were large enough for Rainbird to squeeze their fingers between.
The Krill flapped its tail and started to turn, feeling something on its back. Candle flew around the beast’s head in a tight spiral to keep its attention. The giant manta flew alongside her close enough to recharge her wings and the jackal-masked girl laughed.
“You’re in trouble now, shrimpy!” she grinned, flying circles around the Krill as it tried to keep its eye on her. Candle flew directly at it head-on, dipped and came up beneath its head, bringing her knee up into its bottom jaw. She fell back into a backflip and disappeared beneath the Dark Dragon.
Rainbird reached the krill’s ‘neck’ and dug their fingers into the spongy skin between the chitinous plates while the Krill reeled from Candle’s attack. Rainbird sat astride the Dark Dragon as it bucked, but they clung on, gripping the beasts’ neck between their thighs.
The giant manta cooed and flew above Rainbird, lightly touching them in passing. Candle hung beneath the manta like a living hang-glider and dropped down onto the krill behind Rainbird.
“Good grip.” Candle remarked, sitting behind Rainbird.
“Thanks? So now what?”
“I am going to run over its face and fly toward the trap. Once it starts after me, I want you to open your umbrella over its eye and blind it.”
“How will it chase you blinded?”
“I will be just ahead of it, and I’ll give it a slap or something when it turns the wrong way.” Candle chuckled.
“But if you get hit-”
“I won’t.” Candle cut them off and took the umbrella from Rainbird’s back, threading it between the enby’s arms and their body, “Raise a knee to hold this tight, and make sure whatever hand you’re gonna hold on with has a damn good grip.”
That was the last instruction she gave before hopping up and skipping over the krill with apparent ease. Rainbird watched as Candle leapt from the Krill, kicking off their face like a springboard. She was laughing as the Krill lit her up in red.
Rainbird leaned down to press their body against the Krill and brought their umbrella up alongside its’ face. They waited for the Krill to freeze as it targeted Candle, and when it was still enough Rainbird brought up their other hand to quickly open the umbrella right over the Krill’s eye. Rainbird brought their hand back and dug their fingers in as their umbrella lit up scarlet.
Too slow to throw its rider the Krill bucked, lashing its head left and right to try and shake the blindfold. Candle laughed again and the Krill’s head turned to face the source of the sound right before she brought her knee up under its head once more. The Dark Dragon recovered quicker this time and locked onto the sound of Candle’s laughter.
Candle whirled and dipped, each time letting the Krill get within feet of her before beating her wings and skipping just out of reach. When it slowed she darted in to slap it, keeping its attention as she said she would but getting tired quickly. Soon she was panting too hard to laugh, and she dipped toward the trap.
Reef stood at the edge of the trap and steeled herself, watching Candle dart through the crevasse and out the other side. Reef could see the sheen of sweat on Candle’s skin and the darkened stars on her cape, showing she had no wings left.
She looked to the Krill, which had lost track of Candle when she’d fallen silent. Rainbird clung to its back and looked panicked as the Dark Dragon seemed to lose interest in its chase, turning its head as though trying to look back at Rainbird.
Reef forced a laugh, loud and confident and as close to Candles’ as she could muster. The Dark Dragon spun back, focusing on the laughter as though it was being mocked.
Reef laughed louder, backing into the mountain where her laughter echoed off the stone walls and the Krill charged with blind fury.
The dragon’s head easily fit into the crevasse, but its’ thicker neck and body did not and its exoskeleton scraped against stone with a whining screech. It had flung itself with far too much force to stop itself in time. It wedged itself into the mountain chasing the echoes of laughter, cracks forming in sections of its plating. It could still thrash its head and tail but it was perfectly pinched like a prawn clutched in chopsticks, suspended above the ground.
Rainbird’s hands were cramping with the sustained grip, but the body was much easier to hold onto now it was stuck. They stayed, keeping their umbrella over the Krill’s eye until they heard a gentle voice beside them.
“Are you okay?” Reef asked, resting a hand on Rainbirds’ shoulder. Candle stepped over Rainbird from behind them with one of her tapestries, which she wound around the Krill’s head beneath the unbrella and tied the new blindfold in place. The Krill bucked weakly, slowly starting to calm down.
“Let’s not do that again.” Rainbird coughed, prying their fingers loose and closing the umbrella now it was safe to do so. Their arms and thighs ached, “I am... quite tired suddenly.”
Reef caught Rainbird as they fell sideways and looped her arm under Rainbirds’. Candle took the other side and they lowered Rainbird to the ground. Rainbird lay on their back and looked up at the full length of the Dark Dragon suspended above them about twenty feet up, parallel to Rainbirds’ body. Reef sat beside them, lacing her fingers with Rainbirds’ and giving their hand a little squeeze.
“I will send for some Krill-Riders to come get this big guy.” Candle said as she wrapped a second tapestry around the krill’s head and wound a rope around it to keep it secure, “You guys can tell the Sky Kids to stop hiding, but tell them to steer clear of the mountain until the Krill-Riders come.”
“There’s something else.” Reef sighed, “We lost track of the kid in red, but it seems the Krill was a distraction.”
“Distraction for what?” Rainbird asked weakly. They were so tired.
“The whale is dead. I think the kid in red killed it. Its body is tumbling in the surf on the far side of the island.”
Rainbird had no words. They looked up at the Krill, their eyes hot with tears.
