Since I finally have time (after almost a year) to read I finally read “Nothing more to tell” by Karen M. McManus and aaaaah! It was amazing! I was afraid I wouldn’t love her books as much anymore (still love tho) because of “You’ll be the death of me”. I loved to read that book too but I couldn’t get through it again last summer at my annual Karen reread time, which might just be because of a reading slump honestly, but ybtdom is definitely my least favourite Karen book. Anyway Nothing More to Tell was amazing and I’m very glad, might be one of her best, but I find it very hard to rank her books hahaha.

it’s a bit late at night and i had a rough day today so this is likely not going to come out exactly how i want it to but. i think there’s really something to be said about how nothing more to tell and you’ll be the death of me explore the same themes in different ways.

you’ll be the death of me was karen m mcmanus’s most recent novel before nothing more to tell and based on my own opinion and a couple other blogs around here it is probably her least popular book id say. a lot of things just didn’t really compute well and in my opinion i think a big problem with this was the time in which the book was set. everything happened pretty much in one day which made anything between any of the main characters really forced? because they weren’t friends anymore. and didn’t have time to reconnect. so everything felt cheap and there for no good reason and the characters felt underdeveloped to me which is a huge red flag for me because i get attached to characters when i read. my favorite part of reading something is the characters and their interactions with each other. ivy was especially bad like really bad everything just fell into place for her?? when she did nothing to deserve it?? and cal made a lot of bad choices that were really just brushed over. loved mateo though i’ll give her that one. anyways moving on

nothing more to tell went for a mostly very similar ‘middle school friends who aren’t friends anymore but then reconnect’ type of thing like ybtdom but it learned from ybtdom’s mistakes. the much more spread out timeline of nmtt lent itself to actual development between brynn and tripp which made anything in their relationship towards the end of the book feel not strangely forced and not out of the blue. brynn and tripp are also just much better done characters i’d say! i literally adore both of them! to me ivy/mateo in ybtdom felt cheap and throwaway as just a way to involve yet another straight ya romance while brynn/tripp actually makes sense to me (regardless of the fact that every karen m. mcmanus has a central m/f ship between the main characters.)

there’s more i could say here especially about parallels between tripp and his dad + mateo and his mom and autumn? in terms of dysfunctional family relationships and especially how dangerous secrets can be to their families. and like there’s other similarities i’ve kinda thought about as i’ve been rereading nmtt and bookmarking my favorite parts. but i’ve spent like twenty minutes on this already so enjoy my long ass half analysis i guess

(Y/n)'s family has a long history of adopting hounds, even including them in their family tree.

Initially, they have no plans on getting a dog. They can manage the farm just fine and was not interested in investing on livestock (chickens, sheep, cows, etc.) They're not confident enough in their abilities to raise an animal.

??? once belonged to another Family, which unfortunately treated him poorly. He was not given a name. There was a period in the summer wherein his owners forgot to give him water, and when he did hear the sound of liquid trickling down— he cringed at the taste. He still doesn't know if they were trying to kill him, but from them on, he loathed the taste of SoulGlad.

Needless to say... (Y/n)'s old man was surprised when they brought home a "mutt".

“He looks like he's dying. Pops, can't you help me out?”

“I thought you hate animals...”

“I just stink at taking care of 'em.” (Y/n) sighed. “Please? Poor thing looks like it's on its last leg.”

To this day, Gallagher isn't sure what exactly compelled them to help him. Even when asked, (Y/n) would say they forgot their own reasons behind taking him in. Perhaps he was just that pitiful— or maybe their (L/n) traits finally got to them. He's eternally grateful either way.

And so...

Gallagher gazed at the (L/n) Family tree, caressing his and (Y/n)'s image.

“Hey Master, ya don't have any plans on getting another hound, do ya?”

“Please, you're already a handful, Woos— Gallagher. I don't need another one.”

He grinned, eyes not straying away from the painted walls.

“Good.” He closed his eyes.

“Wouldn't want to share you with anyone else, y'know.”

(Y/n) laughed. “For an old dog, you seem like a clingy young pup.”

Gallagher nodded, savoring their voice. Refreshing, just like cold water on a warm day. You claimed that he's acting like a puppy, but when he was young? He was a biter. Not exactly the loving kind. It was best that you met him when he was already all grown up.

“Well... Perhaps that's just a sign I never got a chance to being one... But when I'm with you, I'm...”

He shook his head.

After getting an internship with a popular true crime show, she starts poking around for answers. That includes talking to her former best friend, Noah "Tripp" Talbott, who was one of the three to find the body.

Trigger warnings: murder (obviously), violence, bad coping mechanisms (namely, alcohol), kidnapping, mentions of domestic violence

Say hello to my new favorite McManus novel!

The very idea alone was compelling, and the execution is even better.

Much like all of McManus' novels, it's full of twists that will have you wondering how you didn't see them coming because they seem so obvious in hindsight. Fast-paced, witty humor, everything you love about her books: this one has it.

As always, Nothing More To Tell has a solid plot, not a single loose thread or hole in sight. McManus gives you just enough information to piece things together, which is half the fun of thrillers and murder mysteries, and while the novel has a quick pace, there's plenty of room for more lighthearted moments.

But what I enjoyed most about this book, were the characters.

Unlike in previous stories, the murder happened in the past but while the protagonist of the story was present. This meant all the characters already knew each other, which complicated matters and made for an interesting dynamic.

The most interesting character to me was without a doubt Tripp. He's a character who's very much defined by the past, struggling with the post-traumatic stress of finding his teacher dead in the woods and his own actions of that day. It made for a very interesting point of view because he was directly related to the murder.

This book does contain a handful of flashbacks (and when I say handful, I do mean handful: four or five at most), which made me hesitant at first because I didn't enjoy the flashbacks in The Cousins all that much. However, the flashbacks in Nothing More To Tell were short and came from a character who already had a POV. It made sense for them to be there, so I wasn't bothered by them at all.

This book has a dual POV, which I like better than the four person POV of One Of Us Is Lying, and the three person POV's of The Cousins and You'll Be The Death Of Me. It makes it easier to keep up with the plot and which characters know what.

All in all, I find this her best book yet, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

despite the three of them being created at the exact same time, test tube babies in the most literal sense, the utonium triplets naturally filled roles that mimicked a certain birth order: beverly as the oldest, beatrix in the middle, and little miss brynne as the baby. it’s a dynamic that’s followed them to this day.

growing up, brynne liked to think of herself as a normal kid - even if her powers made her a little bit special. she thrived in school and joined lots of clubs, emerging herself in the full experience of being a typical american child. well, as best as she could.

the nickname ‘ bubbles ’ came from beatrix in childhood. when they were learning how to fly, brynne would float in the air, bouncing to and fro. trixie said it reminded her of a bubble, and the nickname stuck from then on.

brynne’s first big move towards independence happens when beatrix is still in townsville - she gets a job in the dietary department of the city of townsville memorial hospital. it’s a great way to meet people, earn some money on her own, and still help the city of townsville ! everyone has to eat, especially sick people ! 

when that job doesn’t work out (more about that can be found here) brynne redirects her sights on nursing school. her goal is to redirect her life, immerse herself fully in the college experience, and hopefully find herself along the way. 

future ;

for now, i can see brynne finding a life in elias and settling down here in adulthood, working her way up as a nurse at the medical center or hospital. as of 10/22 she’s a brand new baby so i haven’t put a whole lot of thought into her future. more to come !

Mickey didn’t expect himself to be at a bar in the middle of Boystown without his husband dragging him along to dance and forget they had kids and responsibilities for a night. He also never thought that in his later years of life he would be out with a group of half-drunk girls. Carl, after being with his girlfriend for what crept up to be almost a decade, finally popped the question.

He had a bachelor party a week ago. It wasn’t anything crazy like it would have been in their youth. Now it was much calmer of an endeavour, all the Gallagher brothers - and of course, Mickey- came together to drink draft beers at an axe-throwing range.

Carl’s fiance on the other hand wanted a much more wild night. Brynn didn’t have many other friends than her coworkers so instead of a full-blown bachelorette party like Carl’s night out technically was, she instead decided to invite her squad of Gallagher in-laws along with some of her work friends. So there Mickey found himself at the bar watching as Tami and Sandy drunkenly clanged together slow dancing to what was not by any means a slow song.

I LOVEEEE DOG GALLIGAR I NEED MORE

please read the rules and regulations next time anon cuz I'll ignore asks that don't follow format. Anyways I'm a big gallagher simp so I can't ignore a humble request. here's a quick sketch of farmer!reader and (yandere utc) dog!gallagher + extra brainrots cooked up 1 AM cuz I just finished a school output

Domestic Fluff/Crack:

You rarely buy chocolate after taking Gallagher in. Not because you're worried that the canine might randomly eat some and get a "lethal" dose— but because he simply looks disgruntled whenever you take a bite. He went on quite a long tangent about how it doesn't taste that great and you would much rather not hear it a second time.

In your first week together, you might've gone overboard and bought every dog care product you could think off. Gallagher heartily laughed when he saw you bought one of every shampoo— and then his heart dropped when you pulled out a pet razor next in the shopping bag. Needless to say, his silence saved his skin. Or well, in this case, fur.

You often pondered over the ethics of having a half-human in your home. It's not that you treat him poorly or bar him from opportunities elsewhere, but you remind him from time to time that he can leave the farm if he wants to. In which, he would either a) put a hand on your shoulder and earnestly decline or b) joke about how he's going to bite you if you ask again.

Speaking of jokes, he never tells you about his past— which was a decision you respected. However, it's become an inside joke for the two of you to make up his backstory and how you met. When your traveler friend Boothill once came to visit, you both told him that Gallagher was actually an ex-police dog who decided he's tired of snitching where the drugs were when "it's always hidden in cushions anyways". When the local innkeeper Siobhan asked where did he come from, he said he was once a bartender— and you made a convincing follow-up that it was the reason behind his distaste for SoulGlad. He even shocked everyone when he had the skills to back that lie up. You swear that every time, the story and people's reactions become more and more priceless.

Yandere:

But not everyone is elusive of his true nature.

That's why he hates whenever your neighbor "Sunday" visits.

Gallagher doesn't want it to happen, but that man seems to always discern the facade he's putting on. He doesn't like it at all. He always had to hold back a sharp stare and a growl whenever he's around. But that man. That hawk...

Why does he always cling to you like a pest?

He knows- he knows you're friends with him and that Robin girl since childhood- but shouldn't those numerous interactions suffice? Why does HE keep stealing your time together? That Sunday is a hybrid himself— he should know that someone has already marked this household territory.

Still, that bird perches on your porch, greeting you with a smile that you'll reciprocate. But the cunning glimpses he sends Gallagher indicates that they equally find the other person bothersome.

"What're you doing here?" Gallagher scoffed. "Don't you have a Family to go back to?"

Sunday smiled politely, though with how his hands are always hidden from the dog's view, he can only guess that it's clenched in a tight fist.

"And you don't?"

"(Y/n) is my Family."

"Before they were yours, they were mine."

That caught Gallagher's attention.

... Isn't that technically the truth? Even without papers, isn't the bond you, Robin, and that fiend share essentially a strong familial bond? He had only heard snippets in town and from yourself, but you three had known each other almost since birth.

So... What does that make him?

A pet?

A hound?

A friend?

A partner?

Or a mere passing memory?

Despite these thoughts, he steeled his resolve and shook his head, subconsciously holding his neck. There's no collar. Nothing that physically binds him to you. And, for reasons he didn't quite placed at the time, he hated the sensation of freedom.

He hated being free.

He hated being detached from you.

"With what to prove, huh?" Gallagher snarled. "Leave. They're asleep. Don't bother them today— or ever again."

He volunteered to patrol for the next nights to hide his insomnia. Gallagher did not understand where most these emotions stemmed from. Why would he wish to be shackled when he just got himself out or a cage? You were kind enough to supply him with basic necessities and allow him to do whatever he wants after work is done— so why this emptiness?

But when he came back home at dawn after unlocking the door with the spare key you gave him— he got his answer.

He felt his feet drag him to your door. Before he could even process what was happening, Gallagher was seated at a nearby chair, tenderly caressing your face.

This was the answer he was looking for. The raison d'etre. All resolved under three words:

"You... I want you."

And for a while, that was enough.
